  • Hey Everyone! Welp, another sleepless night is in the books thanks to Ma Nature. Winds kept me and Sierra up all night long so we are pretty beat today. This new campsite is where I plan to spend a quiet Christmas, I'm really enjoying the water sounds from the creek next to my tent. Thanks for tuning in! ~ Brian & Sierra

    DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OFF-GRID AND SELF SUFFICIENT HOMESTEADING
    Definition of "Off-Grid": Off-the-grid or off-grid is a characteristic of buildings and a lifestyle designed in an independent manner without reliance on one or more public utilities. The term "off-the-grid" traditionally refers to not being connected to the electrical grid, but can also include other utilities like water, gas, and sewer systems, and can scale from residential homes to small communities.
    Self-sufficient means needing no outside help in satisfying one's basic needs, especially about the production of food, and homesteading means living a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. So by those definitions, the key to homesteading is learning to be self-sufficient.

    So I was going to mention this earlier but I forgot, For the wind, look into purchasing stronger tent poles and utilize stronger rope. I learned this while growing in Colorado. Like you I have camped all over the mountains and learned from lots of mistakes. Awesome video and your going to think I am nuts but in your tent you may have loop holes on the inside, if so take 5/50 cord and run some through those loops and secure the string to the bottom of your tent with heavy objects. ( It helps pull the tent taunt from the inside)I learned this while camping in Afghanistan. It helps so much!

    Zip up your window flaps. The whole point of dome tents is better wind resistance. With your zips open the wind shoots in the gap and makes it into a parachute. It pushes and pulls on all your tie down points, takes tension out of your lines causes the heinous flapping that keeps you up all night. Roll your window covers down and zip your zips and it is way less likely your tent will collapse.

    • @bharaninathkomandur6330
      @bharaninathkomandur6330 3 года назад

      I think the window flaps are for view only. It is fully covered with transparent material. Air cannot come in.

    • @OffGridBackcountryAdventures
      @OffGridBackcountryAdventures  3 года назад +12

      The tent is designed to withstand winds up to 90mph so I'm just fine. Venting the tent is necessary to avoid condensation and also to let in fresh air...45mph is no threat to the tent. I would advise against closing all the window flaps. You are essentially cutting off your quickest access to fresh oxygen. What is your stove malfunctions? What if it gets too hot in your tent? I never close the flaps and tell others the same.

    • @OffGridBackcountryAdventures
      @OffGridBackcountryAdventures  3 года назад +3

      @@bharaninathkomandur6330 Your are correct, they shut off access to fresh oxygen so I would advise against closing the windows entirely with the plastic window covering. In my opinion, those flaps are useless and shouldn't be included in an outfitters tent.

    Man, you're really amazing doing this Grizzly Adams lifestyle. I feel like you need to put up a tent around your tent during those stormy times, to avoid the misery of the rough winds. Or you need to pitch tent inside a grove of trees when the bad weather comes around. No sense taking that kind of punishment over and over.

      @@patricialeyva You are spot on. With all the dead standing trees in Colorado, I rarely ever camp near them in the winter. Winds during this time of year are horrendous so there's more of a risk to be in trees. I've had a few camps in trees and it's always unnerving when the trees bang together this time of the year due to high winds. Plus, I want to take advantage of solar for my lithium ion battery and passive solar for heat throughout the day. I understand why people would think camping in trees is more ideal but I tend to disagree. I've found camping in full shade during the winter is brutally cold and you end up running your stove nonstop chewing through resources. Ends up being a lot of extra work so I prefer to tough out the few windy days per month and have a better winter camping experience set up in an exposed area. ~ Brian

    The winds out there can get crazy. Hey thkz for the product demo on the Acopower fridge. That is exactly what I have been waiting for......think of the versatility. I have been using the lifetime 55 quart cooler and it is good.....keeps ice for al long time, but it has all the frustration of......well...a ice cooler.

    Hey new watcher and subscriber here, just wanted to say I really enjoy your videos. They've been quite relaxing AND informative 👍💯. At first my husband thought I had developed a crush until he found my wish list of camping gear. Now that he understands it is possible to not only survive, but actually be comfortable I might actually get his butt out there 😆...it's a work in progress but hopefully before we're too old I'll get him convinced. Thanks for sharing your adventures and your sweet doggie too. Stay safe and well out there 🤙💯

    I’ve experienced many annual typhoons in southern Japan. There have been times when I was even worried my roof might blow off! Actually nothing scares me like the raw power of nature!

    Lol, Nice Weather is for Whimps, luv the sign Brian! This morning I replaced the wrecked truck with an 89 Suburban, has a new engine and a lot of the off road upgrades already installed. It’s at the mechanic getting some minor issues fixed. I’ll be back on the road shortly. Give Sierra a good scratch behind the ears for me. Take care and stay strong.

      Right on, I'm glad to hear you are about to get on the road in the Suburban. I'm jealous of all the interior room those trucks have!
