If you ride where I live, you better learn this lesson. I live in Cape May County NJ. And in the summer season this is jaywalker central. Knowing that people are going to be crossing the street with their head in their phones means you better know this lesson. It will prevent at the very least an embarrassing drop, or at worst, a pedestrian struck. Vital knowledge Robert, thank you.
I just finished a motorcycle safety course and got my endorsements. The one thing that they repeatedly instructed us to do, if we ever felt out of control, was to pull in the clutch to remove power from the rear wheel. Maybe this makes sense for completely new riders with zero experience. But, I bet this sticks in riders' minds as a subconscious first response whenever a quick response is needed

My first bike was a Sportster. Owned it 3 weeks then get a touring. So I basically learned to ride on a touring bike. It was a huge learning curve, but I got through it, thanks to you and Jerry Palladino. It's amazing how much I've learned from both of you. This video is perhaps your best one. Front brake + turn is something I didn't have to learn the hard way, thanks to your videos. I'm a great rider now, and it's thanks to the time I've put into practicing, but your videos taught me what and how to practice. I would have got there either way, but your videos helped me get there without dumping my bike repeatedly.
Yes sir! This is exactly what happened to me yesterday...exactly! I was on my brand new Indian and I could not stop it. It's been a while since I practiced, and you stress practicing. I guess I'll head off to the local school and practice in the parking lot. Thank you for all your knowledge and experience. You do such a great job. Many blessings to you.
Thank you so much for posting these videos! I'm a new rider and recently made a mistake that gave me a few stitches. I've learned alot of what to do and not do thanks to you!
Great information. I practiced on gravel today with a guy that's trying to get certified as an international off road trainer. He had cones set for 12' circle. He rode standing up on his BMW 1150. I rode the perimeter on my FLHTP. He was probably shocked that an HD rider stopped got on gravel AND PRACTICED. He didn't know it was the cones that got me. He's going to the UK to get his certification next month. He watches your content and off road. I told him it's all the same. Head and eyes. Practice practice practice.
Sir, thank you. I dropped a bike before finding your videos. Everyone I talked to told me front break. Get used to the front break. But when you said cover your rear, like my drill Sargent in the army 11b basic training class, it made perfect sense. I bought my bike today and enjoyed it so much thanks to your teachings and advice. I am serious. Your long winded but I am a instant potato generation lol, so by all means don’t listen to me. 👍😎👍 The VTX1800 has linked braking. When you depress the rear brake pedal, 25% of the front brake is activated along with the rear brake. Your labors of love are much apprecaited, sir.
This exact scenario happened to me while riding a Street Glide this summer. Turning right from a stop sign. I had cleared both left and right and started accelerating, while looking left. Unknown to be, a building to my right a shielded a jogger from my vision and although I was moving she kept on running right in front of me. My right foot was between the ground and the floor board, and I ended up grabbing the front brake. I managed to keep the bike up through shear muscle power and the fact I was at a low speed. This video is spot on. I also traded in my glide for a Street Bob. Lower weight and more fun.
I upgraded from my softail deluxe to a 2021 CVO Ultra. I learned quickly that I can’t use the front brake to stop. I never had any issues on all the bikes I’ve had in my life with front braking (70/30) with the rear brake. But a heavy bike like this, all the weight hits that front end FAST. So I’ve watched your videos and have been practicing the friction zone. First time I pulled into a parking lot and U-turned into that very front spot in the friction zone with my wife on the back, she said “damn baby, that was sexy!” Damn right.
Watching this made me finally realize why I dropped my bike today at MSF course!!.........twice :P. Thank you for making these very informative vids, new subscriber here.
You are a great instructor. One nitpick is that you showed the technique for a left turn only. In a tight right turn - which is more common than a tight left turn - you'd have a right lean. Using your rear brake would stop the bike quickly but could you then get your foot to the ground before it dropped ? Remember it's already in a lean.
Thank you very much! Of course you can. The technique of the bike standing up with power to the rear wheel works regardless of what side the motorcycle is leaning toward.
Great video! Really illustrates precisely the reaction of the motorcycle in the turn when the front brake is grabbed, and how important it is to practice!

One of your best videos. Right to the point. You can't stress it enough friction zone and loading the throttle. I'm a new rider. Must have watched many of your videos prior to taking my MSF course last month. Never rode before. 59 years young. During the last day just prior to the final exam I was feeling confident and took a turn and ended up on the ground. I didn't know what happened. The instructor came over and said you hit the front brake. I couldn't believe it. Thank goodness everything was okay, just a few scraps on me and their motorcycle. I got my license but have not taken it out for a ride other than to practice in parking lots. Once I get those hours of practice under my belt and my confidence up then I'll take my Motorcycle on the road. Thank you for all your videos.
Such a good lesson as usual Coach Rob… so many go for the front brake in a panic and it never works out well. We’ve all been there. Thanks again brother!
Thank you very much! Thank you for watching and hopefully you’re subscribed!👍🏾😊 I’m happy that my channel has been helpful to you! That makes all the time and effort that I put into this so worthwhile!
This was an excellent example and fantastic content. It is a shame the guys I ride with aren't as committed to continual education of riding a motorcycle. Watching you and Motorman makes every ride a training experience for me. I am riding with your training videos in mind and practice while I am enjoying my rides.
Great demonstration! Since I started watching your videos I've developed the habit of stopping with the rear brake and planting my left foot. I've noticed that pointing the front tire slightly to the right counters any desire for the bike to lean to the right.
Yesterday I was executing a u turn in a parking lot to get to the spot I wanted to get to. Some lady in a car not paying attention somehow lands up in my path of travel.. I didn’t even think .. came up straight and stopped on rear brake. She never noticed .. I realized I didn’t think about what I did I just did it. Shows that drilling this stuff in whwre it’s a reaction not a thought to not touch that front brake is def worth it. * I will admit I have not spent enough time in the parking lot training. I do always take any opportunity to use the technique when I pull in a gas station or when there’s an open spot in a parking lot of a store I was headed to These techniques work
Doesnt have to be abruptly. I dropped my ultra going about 3mph with my head turned to the left had the handle bars turned right and tapped the front brake. I know rookie mistake but I am owning it and know exactly what caused it.
Excellent example, Rob. Looking forward to practicing with you in Texas October 16th. I hope you're bringing your wife, I'd like to meet the woman that tamed Robert Simmons. Lol.
Hello Robert, Great video I had to learn from experience with my wife on the back of the bike. She wasn’t hurt but this is not a good feeling. I was going slow attempting to make a right turn into a parking spot and grabbed the front brake. It happened so fast, my wife landed in the grass and looked up at me and said “What Happened “. Robert do you have a video showing us how to set up a practice course? I been but orange cones but don’t know proper placement. Thanks Robert
Thanks Alfonso. Thank you for watching and hopefully you’re subscribed!👍🏾😊 I’m glad you both were ok. The cone course dimensions are in the description section and on my website under “Practice Information”.
It's worse on a taller bike like an Adv. The suspension compressing and then rebounding when you grab the front brakes will unsettle the bike. Falling is almost guaranteed if the bars are turned a lot and the bike leans past the point of no return. That being said, I use the rear brake to slow down at very low speed but I finish stopping using the front brake, so I can get both feet down. Maybe that's a bad habit.
Thank you for watching and hopefully you’re subscribed to my RUclips channel!👍🏾😊 ruclips.net/user/BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle I’m happy that my channel has been helpful to you! That makes all the time and effort that I put into this so worthwhile!
that's why i failed my license exam, because i used the front brake when the handlebars were turned. To be sure, i can 100% trust the rear break when coming to a stop when the handlebars are turned, ofc usually they are straight, but if it happens to stop when the handlebars are turned, i can 100% trust my rear break?
Hi, at low speed and friction zone, I still struggle to keep handle bars straight. It goes left right, or right left for few times on very small angle. Any advise please?
Hi. Thank you for watching and hopefully you’re subscribed to my RUclips channel!👍🏾😊 ruclips.net/user/BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle If it’s still not straightening out, you’re not in the friction zone enough.
Yes, practicing in a car on a parking lot, is a thing you should do. When there's snow, that is. That's the only place where you can bring your car "out of control" and practice getting it back under control. Learn how your car behaves, and what's needed. And that's VERY different for frontwheel drive, rearwheel drive, 4-wheeldrive AND the weight of your car. Sadly, and I really can't think of why, that's illegal in Denmark, even at 3 am. It's really stupid.
@@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle oops!! I got a quick reminder about an hour ago why you don’t wear shorts on a bike. I went out to the driveway, moved the bike and left it running for a little bit. Such a good lesson as usual Coach Rob… so many go for the front brake in a panic and it never works out well. We’ve all been there. Thanks again brother!
Thank you very much!
This was a good video I even got a laugh good teaching

This was an excellent example and fantastic content. It is a shame the guys I ride with aren't as committed to continual education of riding a motorcycle. Watching you and Motorman makes every ride a training experience for me. I am riding with your training videos in mind and practice while I am enjoying my rides.

Sometimes you got to do, what you have to do…
Loving the short videos this one was great thank you
Thank you very much!
I love the rear brake!!
Me too.
I dropped my bike twice because of front-braking during turns. This video is the help that I need!

Great Job !
Thanks!
Great learning video 😊

Great lesson thank you!!

Another great informative video. You are saving lives and preventing injuries one video at a time Robort, mad respect to you sir!
Thank you very much brother!
Great content as always .Watching the channel from here in Ireland

Your videos are very appreciated!
Thank you very much!
Great demonstration! Since I started watching your videos I've developed the habit of stopping with the rear brake and planting my left foot. I've noticed that pointing the front tire slightly to the right counters any desire for the bike to lean to the right.
Thanks!
I do always take any opportunity to use the technique when I pull in a gas station or when there’s an open spot in a parking lot of a store I was headed to
These techniques work
That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing that!👍🏾
Doesnt have to be abruptly.
I dropped my ultra going about 3mph with my head turned to the left had the handle bars turned right and tapped the front brake.
I know rookie mistake but I am owning it and know exactly what caused it.
Absolutely! Thanks for sharing that brother!👍🏾
Thanx Rob 💪🏾
It’s my pleasure. 😊
So helpful sir!!

Great information.
Thank you very much!
Excellent example, Rob. Looking forward to practicing with you in Texas October 16th. I hope you're bringing your wife, I'd like to meet the woman that tamed Robert Simmons. Lol.
Thank you very much! I’m looking forward to it as well brother!👍🏾
always great info sir!
Thank you very much!
Thank you!

@@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle I am and will join your monthly service soon. I am getting my butt kicked on slow turns. Your content is awesome!
Great video
Thank you very much!
What about if you have abs. At fast stop with abs.
This video covers stopping with your handlebars turned. That can only happen at slow speeds.
Now that's sacrifice.... Dropping your bike on purpose for a RUclips video. Thanks for the info!!
It’s my pleasure. 😊
I just learned exactly what I did wrong a few months ago when I dropped my bike coming to a stop. Won't happen again if I can help it.

Another great video. Oh yea!
Thank you very much!
How about if the rider squeeze the front break gently not grabing?
Still a bad idea.
that's why i failed my license exam, because i used the front brake when the handlebars were turned. To be sure, i can 100% trust the rear break when coming to a stop when the handlebars are turned, ofc usually they are straight, but if it happens to stop when the handlebars are turned, i can 100% trust my rear break?

Rob love content and I’ll been practicing but I need new handlebars. What brand and height you have. I have 2015 roadking. Thanks
I have Factory 47 bars on all of my motorcycles, but I will be switching to Tab Performance when they are available in chrome.
Hi, at low speed and friction zone, I still struggle to keep handle bars straight. It goes left right, or right left for few times on very small angle. Any advise please?
Hi. Thank you for watching and hopefully you’re subscribed to my RUclips channel!👍🏾😊 ruclips.net/user/BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle
If it’s still not straightening out, you’re not in the friction zone enough.
New rider here. Why keep the clutch in the friction zone when you're just rear braking and removing power from the rear wheel. What's the difference?

@@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle yeah, I subscribe to you bud. You're definitely the most thorough teacher I've found on RUclips

???? Do you countersteer when making a turn from a stop? Or do you steer like a bicycle when making a turn from a stop?
What do you mean steer like a bicycle?
Quick question. Now I know this is for instructional purposes, but are you going to start pushing for grabbing the front brake?? Just asking🤪🤪🤪
Absolutely not!
@@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle oops!! I got a quick reminder about an hour ago why you don’t wear shorts on a bike. I went out to the driveway, moved the bike and left it running for a little bit. Went to get back on to shut it down and lock it up and briefly touched the exhaust with my leg…. Gonna learn today!!!
I know you have drop guards on, but it hurts my souls to see that bike hit the ground.
😂😂 Yes she’s protected.
👍🍺
Going slow
Front brake NO!
Too many windshield stickers on the driver’s side of the car blocking the view.
Really??? That’s your take away from this video?? You are right though. 😆
@@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle I thought you sort want any comment to boost engagement numbers. 😁
