I think our government is worried about what information he all has, but I don't think he would release any sensitive information. The thing that bugs me the most about NSA surveillance is that the public has no right to access that data to prove their own innocence when falsely accused. Think of the legal implications if you knew that you were in a particular location when a crime was committed and knew that if you could access NSA data to prove your location you'd be found innocent. Or if you could access recorded phone records to prove that someone had launched a credible threat against you and needed protection... the list goes on. The point is the NSA data collection scheme has yet to demonstrate public usefulness of the data OR they are lying about just how useful it is to them. I don't think the government should have the capability of using data to attack individuals unless it also gives them the right to defend themselves with unredacted access to data that may prove your innocence. Problem is there is no accountability on the part of the NSA to allow us to know if we are getting genuine data about us. They hide behind the excuse of national security but I think it goes way beyond that. With no accountability it's pretty much up to our imaginations as to what they do with that data and there is no disinterested body to verify the use and purposes of that data. No doubt large interests like the Rothschilds ownership of controlling interesting in 80 percent of the worlds largest corporations have access to this data if they want it. I find that troublesome.

Snowden gets more impressive - I wasn't positively impressed at all at first - but I'm starting to look at him like a hero - way different than when he first blip-ed my radar.
The real question is: 'Who brings the U.S. government to justice, when they break the law; whether it is a crime against humanity, war crime, or other...and the U.S. government does horrific things...with drone strikes, nuclear bombs, napalm, or torture...' Many thoughts and questions, but here are a few points: 1) Do we, as humans, still have the right to decide in what kind of society do we want to live in, and how to go about that? 2) what is the purpose of a law system and which one do we need now? (is it about providing orderly infrastructure for a fair, prosperous and dynamically balanced society? or is it about the legitimacy and stability provided by a theoretical statement that is inapplicable in reality?), 3)should surveillance and spying be on a slippery slope or rather restricted, so as to carry on with further global human development? 4) is it a problem of national and international law incompatibility? Or just a generalized human rights violation that are the consequences of cumulative errors from past events?

But it is also partly about establishing truth. 3) Ideally restricted, in reality humanity needs to be better educated about information technology and private citizens should take private steps to anonymise their data. 4)It is a problem of too high complexity for most of humanity to be able to understand the problem. Also a problem of information about the problem not being revealed (and verified by an expert) to the public, which is what Snowden changed. What you say about a cumulative error is also correct. For me it seems rather a logical outcome of the legalization of using money as a means of free speech. The corruption at the very heart of the United States policy making machine. Direct money transfer form industry to policy makers, giving already wealthy individuals and companies an obvious advantage on the marketplace. If you are able to invest money to pay off a few politicians to ensure laws that benefit you through subsidies or tax breaks or to damage competitors (what is done to tesla right now). Supposedly, the United States market is free, but it is obviously not. This is what is hurting the US economy the most. The US is still the largest economy on the planet. If I cannot trust them to play fair, it incentivizes me to play unfair as well. Went off on a bit of a ramble here, but I am glad to see another person also thinking about these problems. Edward Snowden is a very intelligent man. He is very well spoken and really seams to have a grip on what his agenda is. I think our government is worried about what information he all has, but I don't think he would release any sensitive information. I believe he has the best interest of our country in mind otherwise he could have done real damage to the NSA, CIA, FBI, etc. I like how Obama calls him a 29 year old hacker when Edward is immensely more intelligent than Obama or most presidents are/were.

Why doesn't Snwoden really understand what is going on then, if he is really so much smarter than Obama? He does not see the necessity for these programs, or how the world has changed because of technology. He talks about this shadowy high up elite that he says have created a culture of less accountability. I don't think this is true, it's just that we see more of them now because of technology. They will do anything but explain themselves to us, because that is not the level at which representational democracy works in America. We have a great need to know country, and until someone thinks of a better way to do things, that is what we are stuck with - that is the American empire expanding across the globe. Certainly measurably better than any other empire, but there is no way the productive people of the world are going to back the retreat of the American empire because it would mean the advance or Russia, China or the inchoate Islamic Caliphate. No one wants any of those options, and the American system is pretty good for most people, but, yes, hardly perfect. If we/you want perfect, think it up, explain it, try to get people to buy into it, try to bring about change. Not so easy is it. So, we stick with what has worked.

The parallels between the US and the Romans are almost non-existent. The Roman Empire did not have a rule of law, democracy, an industrial economy, aircraft carriers, ... I could go on and on. The Romans were brilliant for their day, but they have neighbors that wore them down over time. We have no such neighbors, and we have a fair trade system that treats our supposedly conquered lands fairly, unlike the Romans. You have a lot to learn.

Looking back at growing up , I am so grateful that my father told me and my siblings. "Right is right,wrong is wrong and the truth will stand when the world is on fire". Hundreds of times. And I'm grateful to have had a mother who taught us to hate lies and telling lies. I feel like I can understand a lot of what edward says. Knowing that deceit is what has caused this world so much needless pain and if humanity wants a better present or possible future it begins with awareness and truth. The continuation of deceit only produces the same results it always has. If nothing changes,nothing changes.
The thing that bugs me the most about NSA surveillance is that the public has no right to access that data to prove their own innocence when falsely accused. Think of the legal implications if you knew that you were in a particular location when a crime was committed and knew that if you could access NSA data to prove your location you'd be found innocent.
Or if you could access recorded phone records to prove that someone had launched a credible threat against you and needed protection... the list goes on. The point is the NSA data collection scheme has yet to demonstrate public usefulness of the data OR they are lying about just how useful it is to them.
I don't think the government should have the capability of using data to attack individuals unless it also gives them the right to defend themselves with unredacted access to data that may prove your innocence. Problem is there is no accountability on the part of the NSA to allow us to know if we are getting genuine data about us. They hide behind the excuse of national security but I think it goes way beyond that.
With no accountability it's pretty much up to our imaginations as to what they do with that data and there is no disinterested body to verify the use and purposes of that data. No doubt large interests like the Rothschilds ownership of controlling interesting in 80 percent of the worlds largest corporations have access to this data if they want it. I find that troublesome.

amazing bright young man - actually thanks to him I understand how American government functions much more now, and I am blown away that I can learn that in just a few of his interviews and we were never taught this understanding in schools. Its almost as if our democracy failed - and low education of the people is now a guarantee of democracy.

Many thoughts and questions, but here are a few points: 1) Do we, as humans, still have the right to decide in what kind of society do we want to live in, and how to go about that? 2) what is the purpose of a law system and which one do we need now? (is it about providing orderly infrastructure for a fair, prosperous and dynamically balanced society? or is it about the legitimacy and stability provided by a theoretical statement that is inapplicable in reality?), 3)should surveillance and spying be on a slippery slope or rather restricted, so as to carry on with further global human development? 4) is it a problem of national and international law incompatibility? Or just a generalized human rights violation that are the consequences of cumulative errors from past events?

2) To regulate society, we need a just one. It is partly about providing order and infrastructure. But it is also partly about establishing truth.
3) Ideally restricted, in reality humanity needs to be better educated about information technology and private citizens should take private steps to anonymise their data.
4)It is a problem of too high complexity for most of humanity to be able to understand the problem. Also a problem of information about the problem not being revealed (and verified by an expert) to the public, which is what Snowden changed.
What you say about a cumulative error is also correct. For me it seems rather a logical outcome of the legalization of using money as a means of free speech. The corruption at the very heart of the United States policy making machine. Direct money transfer form industry to policy makers, giving already wealthy individuals and companies an obvious advantage on the marketplace. If you are able to invest money to pay off a few politicians to ensure laws that benefit you through subsidies or tax breaks or to damage competitors (what is done to tesla right now). Supposedly, the United States market is free, but it is obviously not. This is what is hurting the US economy the most. The US is still the largest economy on the planet. If I cannot trust them to play fair, it incentivizes me to play unfair as well.
Went off on a bit of a ramble here, but I am glad to see another person also thinking about these problems. This is our time. We are the makers of our future.

America, that is, those upper level actors at the level Snowden has depicted, are all about directing money to people they "like". It is really as simple as that. If you direct money to the needy you can do good, but it is as likely that you will have problems at some later stage if you empower the families of people like say Michael Brown. There is no reason and it makes no sense to do that. It does make sense to keep an eye on people and families like that because they can replicate, that is, they can make more of themselves, and most costs for society as a whole, in wasted social services, wasted education, prisons, more police costs, and more liabilities for everyone else as they might become victims of crime.
I am glad Snowden revealed what he knows, because a lot of Americans don't really think about this and do need to know and consider what it is all about. This is not about harassing productive law-abiding Americans, and we should all know that. Where has that happened?

Snowden worked for a Defense Contractor assigned to 3 Letters Classified! He was NOT an Employee of the Intelligence Government Agency!
Snowden points out that that there are finite resources and that mass surveillance has been extremely ineffective for targeted adversaries (boston bombers) and for finding terrorist attacks in general. This presupposes that the _goal_ of mass surveillance is to protect us from these low probability events/people. But the mass surveillance program might have other goals and it might be excellently suited for those. In particular for recognising and thereby influencing public opinion, managing a campaign, monitoring influence and demographic of politically adversarial movements. Given how extraordinarily ineffective it is at its presumed task we can either assume monumental ineptness (which is indeed possible) or we can look at alternative hypotheses and look for evidence supporting them.

It is my impression that the more power an entity has the more it is usually abused for the good of the entity. I name it the entity because it can be everything and everyone in the world who can gain more and more power and eventually this entity develops madnes of greatness (I don't know if it's correctly translated (Google Translator failed) - Anyway - If you get so powerful that you think you are above all laws then it's really really bad and in time becomes more and more destructive and corruptive (as you know everyone can be bought for a price). This massive power is no good for everyone in the world exactly because it is ever so often abused so in that sense - I'm glad that snowden and Assange and of course other have the guts to stand forward ain order to stob this abuse of power.

I was disappointed by this. Snowden and Lessig have a bit of a professorial cockfight to see who can speak more dryly. Rather funny that Snowden complains about the bureaucratic nature of government, he speaks just like a bureaucrat. Of course he has plenty of good things to say. I do find the nature of Snowden's revelations rather obtuse and theoretical; surely he could list any of a dozen specifics off the top of his head. The nitty-gritty of the military-industrial-corporate police state are not hard to find. Natural rights and constitutional law?
