  • Betfred have been as the new sponsor of Newmarket’s 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas from 2025 onwards. The multi-year agreement means the bookmaker has become the first brand to sponsor all five of Britain’s Classics - the others being the Betfred Oaks and Betfred Derby at Epsom Downs and Doncaster’s Betfred St Leger - at the same time.
Betfred founder Fred Done spoke to Nick Luck about the decision.
To mark their sponsorship of the prestigious contests Betfred have also announced that a £2 million bonus will be on offer to connections of any horse which wins the ‘Betfred Triple Crown’ - the Betfred 2000 Guineas, Betfred Derby and Betfred St Leger. The Triple Crown has been won 15 times, although not since Nijinsky in 1970.
As well as sponsoring the 2000 and 1000 Guineas - which take place on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket on Saturday 3rd May and Sunday 4th May respectively next year - Betfred will also sponsor an additional seven races across the three days of the Betfred Guineas Festival.
Betfred founder Fred Done said: “Nobody has ever sponsored all five British Classics and I am so proud to be the first. I am honoured as a bookmaker to be supporting the sport that I love.
“I want to put the British Classics back where they belong, at the forefront of global Horse Racing.
“As The Bonus King, it only seems right that I should offer a bonus. Therefore, I am offering £2 million to any horse who wins the Betfred Triple Crown, consisting of the Betfred 2000 Guineas, Betfred Derby and Betfred St Leger.
“It hasn’t been done since Nijinsky back in 1970, and although Camelot came very close in 2012, it seems about time we were celebrating another Triple Crown winner.”

Hardly great that our big races can't attract 'blue chip' companies - and needs hand outs/ sponsorship from bookies.

Agree, BHA and Jockey Club, need to start thinking outside the box and find other corporates to sponsor these big races. We have the lowest price money in Europe. But the likes of 'Lord Snooty' Luck, won't bring this up we the likes of Done. As him and most of his collegues in racing media and press, are literally in bed with the bookies.

You could not get a bookies licence, when it became legal, unless you had a conviction for illegal bookmarking ! Not a lot of people know that ! lol

Stopped gaurateed odds in every race, only double the odds on 1 winner on a lucky 15, but as long as you find the money to Sponsor all "The Classics" thats fine. Dont worry about the small punters.🙄👍

Over two decades ago I wrote to those in charge of UK racing proposing an English Triple Crown bonus for colts and fillies, and also a Triple Classic bonus for winners of any two classics outside of England before the running of the St Leger. I listed the Northern Hemisphere 3 year-old races I thought should qualify.
I can't remember if it was the JC or BHA running (ruining) racing in England at the time, but the Australian bloke in charge expressed interest in the idea when replying to my letter.
Nothing came of it of course, the British in charge of racing in England preferring to pimp the sport out to the highest Arab bidder and thereby wrecking England's historic raving heritage forever.
England had one of the best series of 10 furlong weight for age races in the world, right-handed, left-handed and straight courses, but the historic champion Stakes is just a re-run of the Prince of Wales's Stakes now.
The British are incapable of any original thought.
    I'm English not British.

There's too much racing for a country that size. 60 tracks is far too many. Here in the U.S. we are double the size of the UK 326 million in population and we dont have 60 tracks

326 million population with only 2 million attending race days in 2023.
Racing isn’t in the top 5 sports in the US and never will be.
When I’m in Florida (twice a year) I talk sport with the locals and they couldn’t give a toss about their racing!
