Thank you so much for the beautiful tribute to our small town! I grew up in between Hardinsburg and Fredericksburg. The highlight growing up was "going to town to do the tradin'" on Saturday.
There are a TON of Carnegie libraries in southern Indiana. My favorite is the one at Jeffersonville, that was made so fancy that it caused a small scandal, and re-evaluation of accounting. It is now owned by a private firm.
Since I was a small boy, cresting the hill on 56 and seeing the courthouse, I knew I had finally arrive to Salem and my mothers family that cared so much for me, the feeling was a inner peace is best I can describe it. I miss those youthful days all the time.
I’ve lived my entire life in Washington county. I actually live in Claysville about 9 miles west of Salem. I will never live anywhere else. I’m a farmer and with my wife raised 3 sons. We consider Salem to be the big city of our county. You were able to shed some light on what a historic town Salem is. And Washington county as a whole can offer even more interesting and amazing things ! Great video ! Thank you ! 👍
Always a pleasure to share these gems! I was not expecting that large train track, thought it was just a train memorabilia museum. The nice man at the table said, “Let me know when you’re ready to see downstairs, I’ll show you around.” I was blown away! Felt like a 10 year old on Christmas morning!
Yes, Salem is a gem. A while back I went up there to do genealogy research and found documents to copy from other states also. I appreciate that you tell the architectural styles, I'm kinda into that.
My dad was the project manager at becks mill, he owns Pritchett brother’s construction. When I was about 9 years old my uncle took us in to the cave while the water was drained out, we saw blind fish and even some very large rooms in there. I love Salem, they have a great Mexican restaurant too! And obviously H&R bakery, thanks for the videos. We have so much history in Lawrence county
I know I take southern Indiana’s relaxed ways for granted, until I tour a really big city. I was out in California, and couldn’t wait to get back home!
I really love the tours you do of these lovely Southern Indiana towns. I come from Ohio and now live in Florida, but in recent years before leaving Ohio I had started spending more time in Indiana, especially the part of the state along the Ohio River from the Ohio-Indiana border down to Louisville. I moved my big boat down from Cincinnati to Florence not far from the Belleterra Casino and my dad owned and operated a successful foundry in Richmond the last twenty years of his life. I have not been to Salem but it looks to be a lovely town. That county courthouse in the center square is a beautiful building. The downtown area still looks prosperous. I hope that there are not too many vacant storefronts. Some little towns look like ghost towns anymore. At some point I will probably be coming back to live in SW Ohio, and if I do and have my health that I can still travel, I will want to explore more in Southern Indiana thanks to seeing your videos.
Lots of charming little towns in southern Indiana! A few years ago I did a survey of every town along the Ohio River, from Lawrenceburg to Mount Vernon. I have to say, it was a healing experience, and would recommend it to anyone. The last major Ohio River town, to edit and publish, is New Albany, which I hope to complete this winter. But away from the river, my true obsession has been Corydon, and I have filmed and re-filmed it numerous times, to get everything right. Corydon was one of the first tourist towns that Dad brought us to, when we were kids, and I’ve always treasured it.

Salem is my hometown as well! Great place to live. Currently working on a trail guide for the new monon south trail! I hope some of you enjoy it when i finish.
Another great video Roger, thank you! Watching these makes me homesick, but also I'm learning a LOT about the state I grew up in. Places I've never heard of OR have heard of, but have never been. IF you ever get a chance, how bout making a trek to either Gaston or Muncie? I saw that you've been to Santa Claus, but the videos are only a couple minutes. How about a longer video showcasing the many stores and also Holiday World. My wife, son and I went there in 2007. What a cool place! My aunt and uncle told us about it. I'd never heard of it before, so we took a drive...it's a little ways from Ft. Wayne (that's where they live). Anyway, thanks for making these, it's good to visit home all the way from Washington state. I got out of the Army in 2000 and just stayed here....in case you're wondering.
You’re a long way from home, for sure! For a long time, I tried to keep videos short, and would cut up a town by attractions. Santa Claus, Indiana ended up being 3 videos. I’m thinking about doing a segment about Holiday World next spring, and bringing in some of the neat history.
More cities need these old reminders of a simpler life, now all there are is starbucks 4.00 and up for coffee, miss the drugstore soda fountains. That little train is awesome❤
Check the John Hay museum hours on their website, and get an Apple fritter at the bakery! Best I’ve ever had! 🙂 If you’re not from the area, Spring Mill is not far from Salem, you can do both in a day!
We love town with the courthouse in the middle of the square! Great history! Learned a lot of stuff I didn’t know. We have been told about that bakery!
My wife's grandparents were from Pekin and Palmyra , both near Salem . I remember the first time I visited them in Palmyra , we traveled over several hills after turning off of the highway , and as we topped the last hill , there was Palmyra , in the valley, looking like a scene from a Norman Rockwell Christmas card . The only real drawback was most people had to travel to either Jeffersonville or Louisville for gainful employment . Other than that , quaint villages all around .
They have the best apple fritters I’ve had, in my entire life! I took some to my in-laws, last weekend, and they also loved them. So glad that you and your son had a good time! 🙂
This just showed up in my YT feed today. I live is SW IN but my only contact with Salem has been at the Speedway in the 70's and 80's, not in the city proper. Will have to head over there in the Spring as it looks like some great photo opportunities. We also camp sometimes at Patoka Lake so not to far for a day trip from there. Thanks for a great tour of the town.
It's been a while since I commented but I really enjoy your channel. I really would like to get back that way soon. I haven't been to Indiana for thirty years. I'm a little homesick. Keep up the great work Roger. 😊
I love how Indiana shows respect to our vets. My city has pillars up for the same situation, every year theres a HUGE show in honor of the soldiers who fought for us.
Indiana has a large number of military memorials, at least one in every county. Not to mention ones in graveyards. If it weren’t for our veterans, we would not enjoy the freedoms we have today.
@AdventureswithRoger Couldn't have said it better. I have SEVERAL vets in my family, so I love being able to attend these events and pay my respects to not only my loved ones, but the millions of others that fought along with them. Nobody should have to do the things vets have to do.
@AdventureswithRoger you should look into making a video on Columbus, IN to see if there's a video idea that could fit the style. It's an hour from Salem, and it's a fairly decent size due to the growth and presence of Cummins. There might be something here that you could use for a future video :)

@@AdventureswithRoger I think that was a pretty common reference to the Model T specifically. It was the "every man's" automobile, meaning it was affordable for almost everyone. I think flivver in some way means "cheap"

Hi Gene! I’ve really enjoyed the time spent in Salem. “More people should know about this place,” I said to myself. Hopefully more people will drop by, see the museums, and get a bite to eat. Is that large mound easy to see from the road?
Great video! Other interesting locations: Cheddar Depot is my favorite local eatery, just a bit north of the square on the corner of W Homer and N Main/135... A pretty good flea market @ 210 W Mulberry... I've always wanted to see the Piper Flight Museum at the Airport, but have never been.
Just watching the spring mill video, then came to this one , between Salem and Mitchell is a cave river valley park that has been acquired by the state park system that is one of many cave system in the region ,flowing towards the mt Carmel fault line running between Washington county and Lawrence county.

I got about 15 mins in the hay center before they closed and wasn’t I sorry! It was awesome! And now that I’ve seen your video I have about 10 more things to add to my list.

The quarry, which is a dormant property now, just outside the western boundary of the city limits, had stone cut from its ground that was used in the construction of the Georgia capital building in Atlanta rebuilding aftee the civil war.
Hi Kwang! It depends on the stories, really. What are you thinking? I’ve filmed a project about Morgans raid, with scenes in Jefferson County, in post production. @turdferguson7504 Corydon became the state capital in 1816. The town even has an “1816 Modern Kitchen and Drinks” restaurant on Chestnut Street to commemorate it. Pretty cool little town!

Loved your videos. My husband and I can't travel far anymore so we like to explore Indiana. We call it adventures.
My pleasure to show people the world, or at least my small section of it!
I’ve got a video I think your husband and you would enjoy. It’s about all the southern Indiana locations that have easy to access tourist attractions. I’ll put a link below:
EASY ADVENTURES IN SOUTHERN INDIANA

Salem is my hometown as well! Great place to live. Currently working on a trail guide for the new monon south trail! I hope some of you enjoy it when i finish.
Top notch stuff Rog!!
Thanks, Dejae! Hope you and family are doing well!
@@AdventureswithRoger thanks sir, you as well !
Indiana love it's natural beauty thankyou for showing us more interesting facts about the Hoosier state
I live 20 minutes from Salem and I didn't realize it had so much cool stuff. Thank you!
My pleasure. I’m working on a Corydon segment, and it is also jam-packed with great things!
@@AdventureswithRoger don't forget to include Butt Drugs! 😆
@@hoosierpatriot2280 Have the inside, outside and the story! 😀
Oh I'm excited about this one. I'm gonna have a chance to explore Salem by myself in a week or so.
Check the John Hay museum hours on their website, and get an Apple fritter at the bakery! Best I’ve ever had! 🙂
If you’re not from the area, Spring Mill is not far from Salem, you can do both in a day!
@@AdventureswithRoger Oh wow, I didn't realize they were so close, great idea
We love town with the courthouse in the middle of the square! Great history! Learned a lot of stuff I didn’t know. We have been told about that bakery!
The apple fritters are the best I’ve ever had! I hear that the brownies are also great.
@@AdventureswithRoger a lady told us it’s the best bakery around. We really need to drive up there & check it out!
Quick drive from Corydon! (Closed Sundays and Mondays)
The donuts are worth a trip to Salem.
Yes the back roads was always our thing growing up. But now days there is so much traffic
Outstanding! And thank you so much!!!
after watching this i decided to take trip to the bakery. well worth it. the donuts were awesome. and my little boy loved the train
I’ve enjoyed reading all the comments about how people are connected to Salem! It really does have a great square and history to explore!
Defiantly going to check out Salem I live in Indiana central Nice you show places people don't know about
Nice work!
Thanks, Laurie!
It's been a while since I commented but I really enjoy your channel. I really would like to get back that way soon. I haven't been to Indiana for thirty years. I'm a little homesick. Keep up the great work Roger. 😊
My pleasure, Jeffrey! I’m out and about nearly every week of the year, always finding something worth sharing. 🙂
@@AdventureswithRoger did the mention I did before work?
100%.
@AdventureswithRoger you should look into making a video on Columbus, IN to see if there's a video idea that could fit the style. It's an hour from Salem, and it's a fairly decent size due to the growth and presence of Cummins. There might be something here that you could use for a future video :)
My great grandmother lived in Campelsburg when I was a little kid. I had no idea of the history of Salem or what it had to offer. Thanks for sharing
My pleasure, Brinda! A few years ago, I did a film about Campbellsburg’s Cave River Valley: incredibly beautiful place!

@@AdventureswithRoger I just watched the one from Campbellsburg. I had no idea. Thank you again
No worries, always glad to share these wonderful places! 🙂
Love the video.
New Harmony is also a huge Gem. Absolutely stunning there
And has an odd sense of peace, almost like a dome muffling out sound. I thought I was the only one that thought that, but others have said the same thing.
That Model T was donated by my Great Uncle, Wendell Clipp. My Grandfather Emerson Bishop was born in the Becks Mills community.
Why did they call it the “flivver”? I couldn’t find anything about it.
@@AdventureswithRoger I think that was a pretty common reference to the Model T specifically. It was the "every man's" automobile, meaning it was affordable for almost everyone. I think flivver in some way means "cheap"
Ha! I didn’t know if the engine shook it a bit of what the story was. 🙂
Thank you, what a beautiful place and a great video!
My pleasure, Richard! I’m working on nearby Corydon, also an amazing place. 🙂
Nice Video Roger. Good meeting you today. Hope you find evidence of the giants you seek!
It was a pleasure meeting you, Dana! I took 1000 back home, called a friend that is a serious caver, to see if he has any old charts. That would be the find of a lifetime!
Looks like you're on 135. I grew up a few miles northeast of Salem, in Nineveh - on the west side of Camp Atterbury.
135 it is! When I was younger, I took 135 from Greenwood, where I lived at the time, to Holiday World. Longest way possible I think.
Hello Roger enjoy your shows ..me and a few other people at my work a fan shop in scottsburg .build the triangle that was pictured for the memorial...have spend many days and nights playing in bands on that square ..we have even shut the street down and played in the middle of it a couple if times..I went to school in Salem and live in the eastern corner or Washington county.i live 3 miles from the mascatuck river Wich is up the road from a massive Indian mound as well ..keep up the content.much enjoyed and apprciated
Three good reasons for another trip!
Very nice, thank you!
fantastic Roger!
Thanks, Rusty!
Awesome video! I do pretty much the same thing in very lo California, and Arizona, love those 2 lane back roads. Cheers!
I always love a good adventure, with surprises! 🙂
Just watching the spring mill video, then came to this one , between Salem and Mitchell is a cave river valley park that has been acquired by the state park system that is one of many cave system in the region ,flowing towards the mt Carmel fault line running between Washington county and Lawrence county.
Been there and it’s awesome! Not well known, but plenty interesting!

I lived in New Albany , IN., quite an atmosphere!
My aunt and uncle lived there. My cousins grew up there on a great piece of forested land outside of town.
Thanks for the great video. We recently visited en route to Chattanooga and to see if we could find some ancestry info. Both my husband and I coincidentally have ancestors who lived near Salem at the same time in the early 1800s although they both came from different places and both ended up in different places. I got about 15 mins in the hay center before they closed and wasn’t I sorry! It was awesome! And now that I’ve seen your video I have about 10 more things to add to my list.
The museum at Salem is an overlooked southern Indiana gem! I was glad to cover it and get them some traffic! I also LOVED the train depot. Lots to love in Washington County!
This put this on my angina short vacation to this place. I like seeing stuff like this to a short trip to my place. 2 hr 27 min
161.1 miles. 2024 sometime in April or May. Might show up on one of your late festivals near the end of 2024 as well. Like the 4-H fair or one of the others.
Awesome!!! Christmas road trip!
I am new here and just subscribe not long ago the videos and presentations that you do are excellent much appreciated, even though I'm not from Indiana I love anything to do with nature and history.. hopefully maybe one day you'll do Ohio where I'm from. Just want to say thank you again
My pleasure and welcome to the adventure! Last summer I filmed a few segments in Ohio, but haven’t released all of them yet. I’m building up to a week long series of my out-of-state travels.
@@AdventureswithRoger well I'll definitely be looking forward to that oh, you may like someplace like Lehman's Kidron Ohio oh, a lot of cryptic stories Stark Holmes County surrounding counties. Lot of good history of here thanks for what you do
Very wonderful place
Remember cruising the square back in high school it would be so packed took over an hr to get around sometimes
Good times! I grew up in central Indiana, and it was just a given, that every teenager in the area, was going to cruise around the town square! I don’t know of any place that still has that tradition. Back then, it was like a rite of passage: you get your license, you drive your friends around the square! 🙂
Nice video my Mother and Father got married there in Salem, IN. My Mother was 19 and my Father 18 years of age.
Excellent video Roger!
Thanks, James!
Thank You
Brother, have you been down halve roads?. I remember driving down halve roads. The roads where halve. Some had gravel, some were dirt, some wernt either. Half the roads i drove on thru the 50's and thru the late 70's were dirt. Just my love.
My grandfather Howard Thomas use to work in the court house 35 years ago. I would walk from the school to the court house and hang out with him till he got off work.
I live a town over from Salem. Salem is beautiful.
A town of many surprises! I was just over there last night, getting brownies!
John Hay was one of my ancestors i grew up in palmyra,Indiana And have visited the John Hay center many times
It’s a very hidden and unexpected museum. I hope many people can make the trip and see it!
Lake John Hays spillway was built on part of our family’s farm in the 60s
I lived there for ten years and never knew about most of this.
I think one of the most unusual facts about the courthouse is that the clock actually works!
Lol....as a maintenance man for Hendricks County I can attest to that.
The quarry, which is a dormant property now, just outside the western boundary of the city limits, had stone cut from its ground that was used in the construction of the Georgia capital building in Atlanta rebuilding aftee the civil war.
I did not know that one. Thank-you! I love hidden history!
Great job like always.
Thank-you, Chuck!
I love your channel
Thank-you!
The circle around the court house reminds me of Crown Point
It’s been over two decades since I visited Crown Point. Except for the style of courthouse, Salem reminds me a lot of Paoli.
What you forgot about Indiana, is that 10 mins into that nice sunny drive, its starts snowing/pouring rain
Never happens to me, weird! 🙂
That’s my hometown!!!!
Thank. You
My pleasure, Joann!
Roger, are you interested in doing something about Jefferson County, especially eastern county? Some really awesome structures and views.
Hi Kwang! It depends on the stories, really. What are you thinking? I’ve filmed a project about Morgans raid, with scenes in Jefferson County, in post production. I’ve done segments there about Christmas, the town of Madison, Clifty Falls, the tunnel, and the JFD Lanier mansion. There’s much I still don’t have though! 🙂
@@AdventureswithRoger Several one room stone school houses, one with a mis-spelling, several fantastic views, ghost towns, the first insane assylum of the Northwest territory, Many stone structures still standing from before statehood.native American graveyards. I must check out the videos you have already done. Great job! I shared a couple.

I went storm chasing from Indianapolis one night & got hit by a tornado in Salem. What an adventure.
I’ll bet!
