- In this video I fix my ceiling fan switch. The chain broke one day when I pulled on the switch. It is very easy to replace the broken switch with a new one.

Chris help me out please I did mines and its only giving me 1 speed on the 3rd pull. The only thing I bought one at Home Depot so its not completely the same color or brand.
Just as a heads up. You can fix the old switch, what happens is over time the spring gets worn out and stretched. So it just needs to be adjusted. Takes only a few minutes to figure out what position works best for the upper leg so that it springs back the chain just one notch. Good video though
@@shannybrown4186 I am having the exact same problem. Did you ever figure it out? I am wondering if it is a faulty switch? Did you find a solution that you can share with me, since no one helped you?
I agree 100 % !
My thoughts exactly 💯
There’s a special place in heaven for people who make these how-to videos. Thank you!

Agreed!!
I swear 🥺😭🙏🏽
Lol
I love how you avoided displaying a logo and music, and the introduction about what ceiling fans are for. You said, "hello RUclips" and got right to clear, step by step instructions. Thanks for doing this and for providing the Amazon link.
Only reason I'm hesitant to take on something like this is because I can get the wires goofed up so easily but thankfully it looks pretty easy. Not like we have to hook up a whole breaker box, which would take me weeks!
You're welcome
Very detailed for those of us who are NOT mechanically inclined. Thank you so much. 🙋🏼♀️😁
I agree, he is very detailed. but it would've been nice for him to mention that he got help (an extra hand) detaching those wires.
How can you call someone mechanically inclined when he couldn't figure out how to rewind a spring?😆😅🤣😂
I am inclined and still was able to follow his very clear instructions. I know, I'm weird...
You're welcome!
Thanks brother. Fixed my ceiling fan in 20 minutes and got some “special” from the wife. I was thinking of you the whole time!
Dude not the platform for "That" talk. 😆
Lmfaaoo
Dooley from King of the Hill : "you had to earn it" lol
Are ya winning son?
Kinda gey
I have this exact same fan. Installed in 2012 and both chains have broken several times over the years. The fact that this video has almost 1M views tells me that mine isn't defective, and they're all just kinda junk lol. Thanks for the guide!
I think so too :)
Thank you I'm a great grandmother and I've learned so much from watching your video I have the same problem on my ceiling fan so I know I can fix and replace the chain.
Thank you so much for your video
You're welcome!
Thank you so much! We finished fixing our ceiling fan just now thanks to your video. We probably saved a lot of money. We are not by any means a "Handy" family (quite far from it really), but your instructions were simple and precise. The joy of finishing it as a family, of course, is priceless!

Thank you so much for making this vid. For the past couple weeks I've been dealing with my wife complaining that it's too cold in our apartment when the fan light is on because the fan is running as a result of the broken chain. I clicked the link in the description to buy the switcher and got it in a couple days. Matter of fact I was suppose to get it in one day but there was a delay and I end up getting it in two days. Amazon was kind enough to give me a full refund on the shipping cost which was $10. It took must about 15 mins to get the job done while drinking a beer. (crown royal apple in the can) Very easy to do. Only needed a screw driver. Thx so much!!
You are very welcome... Glad I can help!
Thank you so much . A trip to the home store and $6.00 later my husband fixed our chain pull, you are awesome for posting this how to, you make people aware they can fix things without calling someone to do it for them. Have a great day Friend!
You're welcome
My son's fan had this same problem and I told him I wanted to find a RUclips video to help me fix it. He said they already called the maintenance guy and he took it all apart and said it could not be fixed. Thank you for making this video.
You're welcome!
honestly, years later, and this is still such a great and helpful video.
Glad it was helpful!
This is a great how-to video. I'm a total klutz when it comes to projects like this, yet with the help of this video, my wife and I were able to make this fan repair and now we have all three speeds on the unit again. Believe me, if I can do it ANYONE can. Thanks for the help.
Nice 👍
Thank you for this video! I was thinking of replacing the whole ceiling fan but fixed it for $5 instead !!! It made my week
Your welcome
$6.99 quick fix and I did it all by myself! Thank you!
You're welcome!
Thanks so much for your illustration. I can’t believe I did it, found the part, followed your instructions and it’s done. Didn’t have anyone to help, so took bulbs out and lamps off so it wasn’t too heavy, used electrical tape to hold in place while I screwed the screws back in. Thanks so much😊
Your welcome
No lie, I looked up how to replace this and your video came up. We have the EXACT same FAN!!! Thank you!
You're welcome!
Thank you, this video was exactly what I needed. I can finally turn on the light without the fan at full blast 😅
Your welcome
Thank you for creating this how-to-video. I didn't want to purchase a new ceiling fan and now I know I can fix the pull chain problem instead.
You're welcome
Man you just saved me a ton of grief. It did not know this part could be ordered individually.
Glad my video helped.
Thanks for the video! Just saved a lot of time and money being able to fix this myself. Did notice the only way I could pull the 4 wires out of the old pulley easily was to break open the old one like you did. Great step by step - thank you!
You're welcome!
Hey man just wanted to say thank you so much for the video. Saved me so much time and money and headache. Much appreciated. Fixed my fan today!
You're welcome
Your instructional video helped me replace my fan switch. Thank you very much. Much appreciated.
You're welcome!
You saved us big-time. We took apart the original switch without keeping track of which color went to which terminal. I was able to get back on track, with the help of your video, b/c our fan had identical wiring. Big thanks 👊
Does the order matter?
@@user-kq9iq7ui4p Yes, absolutely
You're welcome
Excellent explanation and clear camera... Thanks!
You're welcome!
Others have said this but people like you, who make how to videos for simple fixes (that otherwise seem intimidating) are a treasure! ❤. My fan pull broke a while ago and I thought I would have to replace it. Thank you for this!! $8 order from Amazon and literally ten minutes and it's fixed. The hardest part was not falling off my bed while trying to unscrew the light fixture. (Bonus because my fan pull mechanism was housed within my light fixture, so I took the whole thing to a table and connected everything. No more sweating in the middle of the night! 😊
I'm glad my video helped!
I tried the same thing. Couldn't have figured it out without this vid. Thank you so much man. Blessings.
You're welcome!
Thank you! Last week, my chain came completely out. I'll order the piece now and get someone to assist with the repair. This is great because that looks just like MY ceiling fan!
Nice :)
The pull chain switch itself(which you said the spring unwinds and is difficult to put back together) Is actually really, really easy. You just gotta make sure the spring is on the right sides of the nubs that keep it in place, and pull the switch.
Pull which switch
Thanks for the detailed info!
Your video showed me how easy to replace the light switch on our ceiling fan thank you
Your welcome
Explained so precisely. I’m scared, but going to give it a try.
lol
How did it go?
Greatly appreciate the video. For $8 and a trip to the local hardware store, it was so easy to fix!
You're welcome!
Thanks for the video. My ceiling fan chain just broke like yours and without your video I would not know how to repair the fan. Just order the switch from your link. Thank you.
You're welcome
I just fixed it, and there is no need to buy a new one. Thanks for the video!
Awesome!
Oh my gosh so much trouble for that little cord … I’m thinking about replacing the whole fan 😂😂 thanks for the detailed video!!
Happy to help!
Bless you for making this vid. ! I accidentally broke the chain and I am in hot water with my aunt. Watching this reassures me that I have the tool craft to do the repair myself.
I'm glad my video was helpful
Thanks so much for the video, i am going to fix my ceiling this weekend.
Your welcome
Thanks for the video! I actually used it before doing this replacement for the first time, today!
You're welcome!
No matter how many years have passed, this is still beneficial to anyone who is trying to fix their ceiling fan mechanism. I have at least two of them either stuck in an on position that no longer functional or the entire chain broke off from the switch. So in summer time either hot to death because it is stuck at the lowest speed or in winter time cold to death because I need to have the lights on with low speed fan on.
Glad I was able to help!
I just broke mine yesterday 🤦♂️ and I'm like how am I going to fix my ceiling fan so I Stumbled upon this video clip and it helped me very well so I ordered 2 of the pull chain ⛓️ for the ceiling fan Thank you ❤️🤙🏾 for your video clip it helped me
Your welcome
Thank you so much! I almost panicked because my husband’s not here. After all these years, your video is still helping people like me. 😊
You're welcome! Glad I can help.
Thanks my man. Saved me at least 30-60 min of aggravation thinking I was gonna pop that thing open and reattach the chain. Didn't think about the spring loaded thing-a-ma-jig.
You're welcome
Thank you for this video! I need to fix the light switch one for mine but I’m sure it’ll be similar. Glad I can repair it with this video instead of calling the electrician 😌
You're welcome!
thank you so much for showing that the light switch and fan switch are separate. once you showed the blue and black switch I was able to locate mine. it was hidden. THANKS AGAIN!!
Your welcome
I found this video very helpful to fix a broken pull chain on a Hunter fan. It broke very close to the switch. I was able to get the switch apart & back together. When I took it apart, the trick to getting it back together: the spring is springy BOTH ways.
I needed to load (turn) the spring the opposite of what I first thought. Still took some time & patience.
Nice! Thanks for the insight
Thank you for posting. I am getting ready to move out of a rental house in which both fan pullstrings were broken by my son pulling a little too hard and I was going to fix it myself. I've since changed my mind and will be passing this one off to the maintenance tech. 😁
It's ok :) ...it's good to be able to recognize when you need help
Very helpful video. I was able to change the speed switch after watching this video.
Nice 👍
Thank you I went to Home Depot and got the very last one on the shelf and was able to fix it within about two minutes of taking the fan apart. Well maybe like 10 but it works thank you.
Fantastic!
Thank God for your video, bro. I’ve had a ceiling fan that’s been inoperable for the last 3 years because I could never find a decent one to show me how to go about it. 👏🏽
Nice! You're welcome
This video was very helpful. I can easily complete the pull chain repair to my fan! Thank you!
You're welcome
Thanks this was really helpful! I was going to purchase a new fan until my son found your video.
You're welcome, glad I was able to help!
Looks great, and with a brighter bulb installed that’s all the light you need. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxWF88GpljEn-0o34vtLFazEQ5h5Q33SjU As far as ease of installation- this was my first ceiling fan and it took about 3 hours because I had no idea what I was doing and also it’s helpful to have a second set of hands and a magnetic drill bit. Works great.
Nice!
Omg my pull switch has been broken for a while i came across your video and Thanks to you I fixed it and it didn’t take long either
Thank you for uploading this video just saved me time and money
Your welcome
Bless you for doing this so thoroughly for us! You made it seem doable!
You're welcome
Your vidio is the only one that I watched that told me where to find the part number for the switch by taking the switch out and looking on it,Thanks so much
This really helped me!!!
You're welcome!
Thank you for this video, however I took apart the switch, and it was really easy putting it back. You just have to make sure the spring is wound accordingly. Took me less than a minute and I had never even seen one of these before.
Nice!
Absolutely fantastic. Thank you very very much for taking the time to help everyone else out… especially me! 👍👍
You're welcome
Simple fix. Video to the point. Great job
Thanks! 👍
Great video!Need to do mine! I will take pictures 1st, prior to removal for easy replacement & use a magnetic tip screwdriver.
Thanks!
Good video helped with learning the guts of the fan. I actually lucked out , The previous tenant broke the chain but left inside was a piece of the chain still remaining so I just grabbed a piece of another chain with that clip in piece and took a thin flat head pulled the broken chain out just enough to clip the other chain on and boom it worked
Nice :)
Thanks for making this video! I just purchased this replacement switch through your amazon link. (I was almost ready to purchase a whole new fan before I watched your video.)
You're welcome
Thanks for the help! I even had the same kind of switch. The hardest part was getting the wires out of the old switch. I ended up just cracking it open with a pair of channel locks.
Nice :)
@@ChrisAsipyan After two years, still working fine!
Great video. Succinct, to the point and everything you need to know. 100%. Thanks!
You're welcome
Thanks! My first electrical job.
Nice!
I fixed this in 5 minutes. Thank you!!!!
You're welcome!
You’re funny ! Get help , you are my help ! Thank you for the tutorial, I took down the light already but I thought I could rewind chain but you saved my from throwing shit around so I’m just going to the depot or Lowe’s, I can’t wait for Amazon, I need my fan working 😊
You're welcome!
Thank you very much for taking the time to show us how to make this repair. It’s much appreciated!
Your welcome
Very clearly explained. Very helpful. Thank you.
You're welcome
This repair video is as good as it gets. Thank you.
You're welcome
Chris, your video was amazingly helpful and very clear with the steps and process. You saved me from having to spend on a new fan. Thanks a ton for taking the time.
Your welcome
Thanks for the video, it helped me replace the switch on mine. My chain wasn’t broken, but the switch no longer clicked and didn’t work. Another commenter either here or in a different video suggested squirting a little WD40 into the switch. After I replaced mine I tried a bit of Seafoam Deep Creep in the old switch and sure enough it started working again. I should have tried that first.
Thanks for the insight!
Super quick and straight to it. Thanks!
Your welcome
Thank you for a great video. Very easy to fix my fan. I did find it a lot easier to remove the light globes and bulbs before removing the screws to work on the switch.
You're welcome... And thanks for the insight
Appreciate the video. Now I know how to fix my fan.
You're welcome
This video was so helpful! Thank you for posting this 😊

Thank you so much! Saved me from buying a new ceiling fan 🎉
You're welcome
This helped so much, followed it to the T
You're welcome

I don't usually make comments --- but I agree with Amanda M. below.
-- It's the simple "annoying" little projects that at times may seem tedious -- SO many won't even try to attack a project like this. YOUR VIDEO -- gave my wife the ability to fix our ceiling fan -- while I was out of town. SO BRAVO TO YOU --- and THANK YOU.
You're welcome!
My chain just literally came out and need to replace it. It’s a very great video on how to replace this part. My only question which I haven’t investigated yet. Is that part universal for most or all fans? If someone could help me out with that question I would really appreciate it. Thanks again for the video
You're welcome!
Thanks, another fan fixed instead of replaced!
You're welcome
I did it exactly as directed thank you piece of cake just make sure you put the wires in by the numbers 1,2,3,4 easy.
Nice!
Wow you just saved me around £40-£50 thank you
Your welcome
It's actually possible to rewind the spring when putting pull chain switch back together, I had done it before. Also some people get wrong pull chain switch, and most often, I see two low speeds instead of one medium speed.
Thanks for the insight 👍
Just broke mine last night. It’s for the light though. But I’m sure the repair process is the same. Thanks for the video.
You're welcome
Hey!!
Thank you very much.just fixed fan’s string with this video.
Please share videos to change led light plates in ceiling fans .
Thanks again
Your welcome
Thank you for not making this 40 minutes long
You're welcome
Thank you my dad never wants to help me do anything so I have to do it myself and this helped a lot
Your welcome
Tell your dad that one learns by experiencing moreso than by any other means.
I also was able to purchase at Lowe’s ! Thanks for the video !
Your welcome
Adding my thanks! I finally ended up needing needlenose pliers to help me get the light fixture wire connectors apart; I wasn't sure which was the male end/female end. In hindsight it is discernible from the video, but I couldn't tell.
You're welcome!
Great video, us just saved me $100 bucks. Thank you. I made sure to use ur link when I ordered the part.
Thank you! ...and you're welcome
I put a like. This video helped me. My bottom portion you reference in the first 20 seconds of the video didnt come out when I removed all 3 screws on my super old ceiling fan. So after verifying with the first video that came up (this one), I tried again with some force, and yanked it off. Replaced my switch in probably 3 min flat and everything was back up and working. Thanks again.
You're welcome
Thank You 👍🏼
You're welcome
very good video, easy to follow, thank you
You're welcome
Thank you, your instructions are clear and it was easy to make the repair. QUESTION: Is there a reason why only one of the speeds of the fan works? It's a 3 speed fan, and the pull seems to move through all three speeds, but the fan itself only moves with one of the clicks. Thank you.
There can be many different reasons... One of the common reasons is a weak capacitor that's going bad.
Worked perfectly! (After I ruined the 1st one by opening it up - the spring unwound. Don't do this!) Good thing the Amazon order came with 2!! Thanks so much! You saved me a bundle not paying for a New fan or an electrician!! #DIY
You're welcome
very. clear, covering important caveats and good advice. Thanks!!
You're welcome
Thank you Chris!! Love you! I was agonizingly trying to fix this piece. I got it!
You're welcome!
My fan has been on for months since my grandson pulled out the chain. I do not have a man around to help. I am scared but I am going to give this a try.
How did it go?
AHHHHHHHHHHHH THANK YOU SOOO MUCH , on the way to the hardware store right now
You're welcome
