- How public health is the lens to address poverty, violence, discrimination, and injustice. Redefining the role of public health to be the 21st century urban solution and critical social justice tool, in Baltimore and around the world. Recorded at TEDxBaltimore January 2016.
As the Commissioner of Health in Baltimore, Dr. Wen has been reimagining the role of public health. She has engaged public health in violence prevention and launched an opioid overdose prevention program that is training every resident to save lives.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx
She is a Rockstar of Public Health - Sickcare vs Healthcare - the power of public health and social justice
But only got 4573 views on RUclips with such a true and honest speech. Whereas a good wonderful song can scored a 10 millions views. Sometimes you wanted to help these humans but they just don't care!
WHY IS NO ONE CHEERING HER ON, THIS SPEECH WAS PHENOMENAL
I agree. I think it hard for people to cheer until it threatens them. Sigh.
cause they're white
@@mellamoyaya wow
Because she is making the audience aware and they don't want to be held accountable, they will just go home and get on with their own little lives afterwards - thats human nature - this is the problem with the world. We need more people with her fire and determination.
Because Marxist safety is not as attractive to the human spirit as unsafe freedom
I'm graduating with a degree in public health in Dec. 2017, and Ms. Wen is such a compassionate voice of sanity and hope, that I hope to emulate and further her work in our communities. Working together as members of community team is what makes public health truly work for its community. Thank you Leana Wen for your inspirational words!
Increasingly I see that when I am not my neighbor's keeper, i am also not keeping myself. Our individualism is a delusion that is killing us. Mercy, mercy, mercy!
Mercy indeed!!! Be blessed!!!
Dr Wen presented such a complex issue in a simpler manner with a number of stories. Public Health has to be given top importance worldwide.
Lol @ the audience just staring at her. Don't worry girl! You KILLED it! This needed to be said!
For real, like what a lame group of people to have to give TED Talk to!
This video got me pumped about public health! I wish the crowd had been more excited.
I do not understand why anyone would give this video a thumbs down or why the audience appeared disinterested, but I would of LOVED to see this in person!
fantastic speech am persuing certificate in public health
What a great asset Dr. Wen is to Baltimore. Bravo Dr. Wen!
This presentation 🙌🙌🙌🙌 really makes me want to go into public health
I just started my studies 3 weeks ago and its been pretty depressing so far but this talk inspired me. I will stay with it.
@@CraigDeLarge How so ??? What is depressing about it?
Diana Puma Depressing elements have been realization of 1) a short term decline in some health areas where the remedy is not so difficult, 2) human resistance to good health habits, 3) the relationship between wealth and good healthcare access, 4) the conduct of healthcare as a profit-making comoditized industry, at least in the US. The study is simultaneously depressing and inspiring.
Why I'm in that field right now
It has been 4 yrs. Hope you made it. If not, still gotta time.
this woman is goals
This is an excellent presentation. We need a Dr. Wen in every Urban City in the Country. May it be so one day soon. Amen.
THIS IS SO GOOD AND NEEDED OT BE SAID!!!
Great and true speech Dr. Wen. Thank you. A Hero in Healthcare industry. A Great person indeed. True speech is bitter but is so true. Much humans had lost its conscience.
Excellent presentation et help me to keep gone on my decision to do the master in public health.
Leana's presentation was incredibly powerful. I've got goosebumps.
This speech was amazing and an inspiration to me pursuing a public health degree.
I’m glad Dr. Wen is in Baltimore, what she stands for , she is a transparent people person and I’m glad she is where she is :)
Dr. Wen, please go further into politics. Keep fighting. We need more people like you running our country. We need science and solutions not rhetoric and bullshit. I wish you were eligible to be president. You've got my vote.
But too bad, politics are dirty. Dr Wen is an upright person not corrupt like most of them.
I have tremendous respect for Dr. Wen and highly recommend her book LIFELINESW: A Doctor's Journey in The Fight for Public Health. Dr. Wen began college at age 13!!! Wow. She is simply awesome. Her personal story is riveting.
even so, her handling of the covid vaccine mandate push and the lies that she spilled about how the unvaccinated were a danger to society when they clearly weren't, was shameful on her part. all she did was spread fear and lies about covid
THIS ONE'S SO AMAZING!!!
YES Dr. Wen!!! Yasss honey.. REDEFINING PUBLIC HEALTH IS MY JAM GIRL!
Powerful speech and ideas
THIS WOMAN IS AMAZING
I loved to hear you speak Dr Wen.
L
Thanks public health and urban regeneration are important for safe cities and wealther stations
Wonderful!
Great speech!
we need more people like dr wen to become lawmakers in the government ( run for and win office ) to enact new laws that help society. We lose a good doctor but for some good laws its worth it.But you have to WIN office and wear out a few shoes. I believe
that you have the intestinal fortitude to wear out many shoes and WIN office. I can hardly wait for this to happen !
Outstanding! Keep speaking the truth to power!!!
omg you are my hero
INCREDIBLE
Nice introduction of Public Health
YESSS PREACH! Love her :)
Public health rockstar
I just searched my name out of boredom and found this hahaha. she's so amazing. Coolio (:
Amazing ! ... Is MPH (2 year) and MPH: comparative effeciveness research (1 year) same or different ? What should i choose ? Please guide me.
Seems to be a dim audience. Poverty, violence and racism is a public health issue.
This was a fantasist TedTalk
Wow.
this woman needs a cabinet-level position, though I know that's not possible in the current administration, sadly, at least it doesn't have much longer to destroy our country and she is a wonderful argument for coning since so many communities need someone like her she's BRILLIANT and compassionate!!
By far the most unmotivated type of audience that I have ever witnessed.
You're more than a doctor. You are a public servant too!!!

Oh Snap ! This is so Important in communities with food deserts, no major hospitals (just a public clinic for maybe lower income individuals and families), a higher crime rate (a "police beat" story on the 10 O'clock nightly news), people that don't live in secure and "safe" gated communities (that could be "redlined" have security/"ratchet" metal beams on both windows and doors), people that live in circumstances that are beyond their control (due to multiple factors/variables, like: a persons gender, a person's racial and/or ethnic background, age demographics (young or old), the hereditary/genealogy factor (somebody had either one or many pre-existing conditions), and various social economic statuses).
I don’t think inequality will truly end with Gen Z/Millennial generations, which are the generations which I straddle. But some how we will have to cope with the inequalities of society and make it more bearable for the next generation.
Current system is broken .. The whole US medical system needs to be turned upside-down switch focus to prevention and wellness. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and individuals need to be more responsible.
wow, I love this woman! too bad she got such a lame audience
In Chinese, we called Dr Wen 一个有正義和正气的人!
that must *tRuMp* the rhetoric of politicians"
You've just identified what the Philippines needs to terribly work on. Mass arrests dont work really. They dont address the root cause of the ills in the society. Pub health can mitigate the pressing issues in society
They were riots Doc. smh.
Who else is here from the CNN crisis actor video where she is playing the distraught doctor to really horribly/forced delivered lines?
What?!
@@atmacast4563 What I said.
@@ArvisTatom i found it, wow she's so fake.
@@atmacast4563 Yep, all the world's a stage.
