  • In my opinion, this episode provides you the best approach for installing a water line for your refrigerator and ice maker by using a Shark Bite Water Line Tee in lieu of a standard or tradition water line fitting.
The episode covers the following key items:
    • Disadvantages of traditional saddle shut off valve water line connectors that are prone to leaking and distorting the copper pipes they are attached to.
    • Advantages of Shark Bite Fittings. This is the link to the Shark Bite Fitting, which I mentioned in the video:
    Shark Bite ½” x ½” x ¼” Tee Link:

    • Measuring and determining the depth of the adjoining copper line insertion into the Shark Bite Fitting and determining the amount of copper line to cut out of the copper water line to accommodate the Shark Bite.
    • Marking and cutting your home’s water line for the installation.
    • Installing the Shark Bite Fitting.
    • Turning on the water and testing the Shark Bite for leaks.
    • Connecting a ¼ copper line to the refrigerator and the Shark Bite Fitting.
    • Turning on the water and testing the refrigerator and Shark Bite connections for leaks.
    • Checking the refrigerator’s water and ice dispensers to ensure they work.

Thank you for this video. I was told I had to disconnect my waterline prior to getting new flooring because they would move the fridge but not disconnect the waterline. I was able to shut the water off and with your video I was able to figure out how these Lines came apart. Thank you so much. 59 yo mother of six, GMA of four.

You really need to clean the pipe before using a push-to-fit connector. Get some emery cloth and clean it up before you cut out the damaged section. You should also deburr the edges before seating it into the connector. Not doing so can damage the o-rings inside the sharkbite, potentially causing a leak.

      KS,
I did clean (sand) the pipe with emery cloth on both sides of the cut prior to installing the Shark Bite Fitting. I should have mentioned this. While viewing the film if you look closely, you can see where I did this on the 1/2 inch copper line both sides of my Shark Bite.
Nonetheless, this is a good point on your part. Thank you for mentioning this so folks will not forget to do this.

Why did you install the shutoff under the floor. Why not put in a wall mounted shutoff. Similar to the type used for washing machines.
