    0:03 "This is not a dolphin, it is a pilot whale."
    Pilot whales, along with killer whales, false killer whales and melon-headed whales, are all considered by scientists to be a part of the oceanic dolphin family Delphinidae.
    1:22 "10 to 50 individuals."
    Pilot whale pods usually number 10 to 30 individuals but can number 100s of individuals too.
    1:50 "as males leave the pod after reaching sexual maturity."
    Pilot whales of both sexes stay in the pods that they where born in for life. Males do not permanently leave their pods after sexual maturity.
    2:04 "46 years maximum for males; 59 years maximum for females"
    Male pilot whales live for 35 to 45 years, whereas female pilot whales live for at least 60 years.
    2:13 "A few short-finned pilot whales are hunted in Japan"
    Short-finned pilot whales are hunted en masse in Japan's Taiji 'Cove' and the hunting season lasts even longer than the September-March dolphin hunt that kills other species.
    2:25 "They are an important source of food for the inhabitants of the Faroe Islands."
    Long-finned pilot whales (the ones hunted in the Faroe Islands) are not a regular part of the Faroese diet anymore, and Faroese health authorities have said that pilot whale meat is no longer suitable for human consumption due to the level of mercury inside. Furthermore, the ways that pilot whales are hunted in the Faroe Islands is not the same as the past.

    Pilot whales have 35 billion neurons in the cerebrum. Humans have 16 billion. The cerebrum is the area of the brain that’s responsible for complex functions such as language, learning, memory, problem solving, decision making, and considered the primary area for consciousness. Let that sink in, there’s a high possibility that they could be the smartest species and their inability to make tools is their limiting factor for specie advancement. Would love to see if we can get these amazing animals to solve complex math problems.

      @michaelmccarty1327 they are only chased away because its inconvenient to fight, however when orcas are hungry and they have to fight or hunt pilot whales they do actually manage to hunt and eat them. Predators don't want to get injured so they just move away that doesn't mean they couldn't beat the pursuer in a fight, orcas are also larger and physically stronger so when it's time to hunt they can actually kill pilot whales even if they have HUGE pods

    • @Luaeria
      @Luaeria Месяц назад

      @@daneg It’s a mixed bag, actually. There have been documented cases of Orcas hunting pilot whales but there have also been plenty of documented cases of Pilot whales MOBBING orcas and chasing them away from their hunting grounds or even disrupting their hunts, sometimes resulting in saving orca’s victims and sometimes not. Pilot whales often travel in very large pods, far outnumbering orcas and unlike dolphins, they’re much closer in size to orcas, making their greater numbers more effective Defense against Orca predation, in addition to another skill they employ when mobbing orcas.
      This interesting relationship dynamic extends to such strange instances as baby pilot whales being adopted by female orcas, though the fate of those baby pilot whales is not known.
      Another fascinating thing about this dynamic, and that other skill I mentioned, is that pilot whales have been known to mimic orca calls. This may be another thing that sends Orcas fleeing. Their comms may be disrupted by pilot whale mimicry. It’s fascinating to think about. Imagine trying to coordinate a hunt and recognising voices etc etc and then suddenly 50+ people rush in and mimic everything you’re saying to each other. It would become maddening very swiftly. Like mental/psych warfare in addition to the disruption and unreliability of your main means of coordinating and effectively hunting.
