Given Saikyo line has 1 train per 5 mins, JR east should want to reduce the down time of the crossing. (Tokyo worst crossing is closed 57mins per an hour.) And if you automate it, it'll keep closing when a train come across from behind the screen. And that'll harm the road traffic. In long term, it should be automated combined with smart signaling system though. It's much error prone.
電車がくる直前まで開けてられたり、上りと下りの間にちょっとだけ開けられて融通が利くのが強みよねぇ。

埼京線は運行本数も多いため、すぐに遮断機が降りるケースも多そうですね。
ここって白バイが四六時中張り付いているから踏切の一時停止率は高いと思う。
もっとも、白バイの取り締まり目的はここのところ踏切ではなく、このすぐ左手前にある横断歩道になっていますけれど。

人員を配置するコストはかかりますが、警手さんがいると安心ですよね。
