Words are not enough for praise this tutorial it is very detailed and give so much clarity about the matt control node thanks Bernd just bought your color grading course and almost finishing with your basic fusion course which was amazing
Your edge re-lighting technique was very eye opening. Thank you. Sometime you get stuck to the same tools over and over and it is nice to expand into different means to attain the same goal. I think I will soon become very used to use this new technique - much appreciated; thank you for taking the time to produce this video Bern.
Excellent, excellent tutorial. I was having such a tough time getting the keying right on Davinci after I switched from Premiere. Thanks so much, subbed 👍
How to Do a Luma matte sir like we do in after effects, I did a 3D render and now want to add fog using depth map (mist pass of blender cycles) so instead of using Fog node I am using a stock clip and want to do a luma matte like we do in after effects
This is why I love Red Giants Primatte Keyer in AE - It does basically of this within one tool. As great as Fusion is, it often takes a very long-way-around approach to get the job done. I REALLY wish Red Giant would release an OFX version of Primatte Keyer.
Primate is in Fusion Studio. But also the delta keyer can take solid and garbage masks internally- but this isn't so much about what the keying tool can do but I am showing how you cam combine different tools and techniques for an advanced workflow. Even with Primatte you cam end up in scenarios where one keyer isn't enough or where the despill requires some completely different work than the alpha etc..
@@VFXstudy I have tried the Primatte keyed in Fusion Studio, as well as the BCC Primatte keyer. While similar to red giants, neither of those seem to be GPU accelerated. Running either keyer slows even the most basic video key to a crawl, where Red Giants Primatte doesn’t seem to have this issue. Honestly, having used AE and Fusion, if choose AE for keying any day of the week - which is sad, because I want to like the resolve-fusion integration to prevent the need to keep rendering out and bringing back in files.
@@VFXstudy another thing I’ve noticed about fusion vs AE - AE seems to ram cache really quickly, meaning more complex things play back in real-time much quicker. Fusion, if it even caches anything in ram, does slow at a snails pace. I don’t know of its fusions general pack of GPU acceleration among its tools or what, but as much as I want to like Fusion - I still often find complex scenes going out to AE.
I need to know how to do luma matte and alpha matte as I am making a dr strange city destruction effect so disintegration of 3d renders using stock clips will require alpha mattes and depth fog and dust needsluma matte
Luma key you can get from the lumakey node. Disintegration of 3d render? Maybe look at my thanos Disintegration video if that's the type of effect you mean. Or maybe you want to do it in your 3d software...
Thanks, but not sure the stock clip here can be share, don't remember created this a while ago. Generally I share exercise media with all my paid courses on VFXstudy.com
If I have a Delta Keyer, then add a Matte control afterwards, and I adjust thresholds so that my matte is now solid, it make zero difference to the final image and I'm still getting a load of noise where it should be solid. What's going on??
Great video, I got a simple and silly question. I have this simple edit whereby I need to freezeframe the layer. So What I do is to duplicate the video and freeze frame the layer above. And create a Fusion comp on these 2 clip. In fusion, both layer appeared. However, if I tried to extend the duration of the freezeframed layer in edit page, it does not translated in fusion tab. It shows up a red line in keyframe panel stating that the video Cant be stretch any longer. Its easy to understand in AE, but not Fusion.
Sounds like a bug but haven't tried that specific scenario. You can always make a freeze frame directly in Fusion with the timespeed tool or with the keyframe stretcher
May I ask a basic question? It appears that the concepts of masking is with the assumption that there is a green or blue screen and that the masking techniques will then work in an acceptable manner? I have tried to use many techniques other than rotoscoping (if I understand the term correctly) but find that the results are not acceptable. Am I stating the obvious from an inexperienced person’s perspective? Sure, with a blown out white sky, sky replacement is very possible. But, masking a person that has many variations of hues, luma, etc. is not easy to mask without a key-able background. Kindly offer your opinion and thank you.
Well, the stronger the visual separation between foreground and background, the better your chances of finding a procedural way of separation. That's why green screen exists. It gives strong separation between non-green foreground and green background. In other cases it gets more complicated and will often require rotoscoping. Magic mask can work but is rarely 100% accurate.
Hi! Please I tried making mattes and after I exported it; in the color page where I get to add it to my clip...it doesn't start at the same.time with the clip. How can you advice?
How do you roughen the eges of any given mask, lets I draw a shape of a mask by hand, but I want to apply a rough edge to it? which nodes can do that? what is the solution?
Rough? Like fuzzy or so? Guess you could work with some distort effects or so with some noise, or a ripple fx or so, but not entirely sure what you want to get here. You're not talking about keying here, or are you?
Hello I'm having trouble with something, apologies if it is very confusing but maybe you can help me as your video didnt quite touch on it. I have three video tracks that I need to combine. The first is just the background plate. The other two I want to combine where I use the alpha as a matte over the 2nd (so the 1st gives me the key I want, and lays over the 2nd) and then combine with the background plate. I can get it to work combining the two, but when I try to lay it over the background plate it is not transparent anymore
Do you bring everything into Fusion? You can create a Fusion comp from all three layers if you don't need more than timeline resolution. Then in Fusion check transparency on every node if necessary. It's also possible to comp with transparency in the edit page but I think you need to send the alpha output via the color page back to the edit it I'm not mistaken

Love this tool-based exploration; how about the Custom Tool? This powerful tool allows, as you know, expressions and of course custom macros. BUT how to create custom macros, which might include for example, having the chosen tools appear in the User tab and not the Controls tab or the Channels tab. Then one has a custom User tab interface with access to the chosen settings and options. But again, the actual setup of these settings--for example, numbers to hold variable values for experimentation--can be frustrating because these Fusion macros seem to have limited ability to alter or add settings and options after the fact, thus forcing one often to build it again from the very beginning. This can be time-consuming and frustrating. Any thoughts??? Mike
Custom tool is mainly if you want to do pixel based mathematical computations (or vertex, polygong pont, particle depending on which custom tool). Though people do other stuff with it. General Macros, you can create with any tools via the macro editor or manually by grouping and adding custom controls on Group level and connecting with Expressions. I also have a this tutorial on Macros: vfxstudy.com/tutorials/macros-templates/ For Custom tool, Simon Ubsdell has some good tutorials I believe - might do something there in the future as well.
thanks for these keying tutorials :) I noticed you are not using linear workflow in them - is there any particular reason other than simplifying the process?
