  • This is a review of Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee, developed by Oddworld Inhabitants and released for the Xbox in 2001. It was later remastered and re-released on the PS3 and PS Vita as Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee HD by Just Add Water and this is the version I'm playing for the review. It was also re-releases on PC in 2010 and recieved a significant update in 2016 that fixed various issues, however this port is controversal because it also has issues not present in other versions.
    Munch's Oddysee also marks the first 3D game that Oddworld Inhabitants had developed, and releasing the game turned out to be a lot harder than they initially planned too. But after going through a troublesome development, was the final game any good?

    Considering the previous game entry had **explosive fart possession** as a mechanic, I don't think a couple of silly voices and outfits are going to bother the average player that much.

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  3 года назад +6

      Yeah but the thing is with the explosive fart possession is that, while it is very silly, at least it was actually used as an awesome gameplay mechanic and wasn't just a throwaway gag. Munch's Oddysee has several moments where it just feels like there's no substance to the jokes and it just comes across as too childish compared to the older games.

    I never heard of anything oddworld until i got this game when i was a kid. I understand that coming off of playing the previous games, Munchs oddyssey might’ve been a lackluster experience. For me though, when i was younger this game really stood out among any other game i had played. The character designs were awesome, It was funny, and each of the levels where you return the land to its former beauty and amassed a mudokoun army were awesome. I do agree with how many sections with escorting scrubs was super tedious, as well as the underutilization of munch. I appreciate hearing an opinion from a series fan, I think much of my fondness of the game was from me never have played the rest of the series. Also, this Ps3 version looks way worse than the xbox version i remember playing.

      @PixelPursuit  5 лет назад +4

      Yeah for sure, I think the original two games are incredible, and by comparison Munch's Oddysee isn't the same insanely high quality as those. I will say though if this was the first game in the series you played, it probably would stand out, the universe it presents is still really interesting and like you say it's unlike anything else. The thing with the Mudokon army is pretty cool, but it's just so weird going from the previous games where the Mudokons were peaceful to them suddenly having weapons and taking down Sligs haha.
      I get the impression that the PS3 version is probably the worst out of all of them, so maybe I shouldn't have picked this one to do the review haha! Still though, I think a lot of the problems I point out are with the game itself and not just the port.

      I like the idea of the story here but I actually don't think it's very well executed. The opening cutscene is great but the rest of the cutscenes are really lacking in detail. I hate the way that Abe and Munch meet and have no character development. They just instantly become friends even though they've never met each other. The Vykkers are awesome though and it's a shame they never got properly featured in another game (although, the one in Stranger's Wrath is actually pretty good too).

    Great video, I've finished this game twice, done 100% karma last year and I still have the same opinion as you.
    Just one thing : in the Lore, Mudokons aren't all weak and peaceful. In Abe's Oddysee, some native Mudokons attack you with a slingshot if you pass without imitating them. That's because Monsaic Lines are protected by Mudokon guardians. In Exoddus, there is a mention about Mudanchee's Tribe, who are mudokon warriors. The reason why people are thinking that they're all weak and peaceful, it's because we mostly saw slave Mudokons and shamans. (who are giving you power rings) Only slave mudokons are really weak because of the Glukkons who took them when they were young, depriving them of their potential powers and knowledge. This is kind of what the first game lore wass about. Soulstorm made it more clear at the end. ;)

      @PixelPursuit  Год назад

      Thanks! I don't know if I have the patience to go through this again and try and 100% complete it. It was quite a drag going through it normally for this video haha!
      That's very true, but in Abe's Oddysee it felt a lot more grounded than the Mudokons we see in Munch's Oddysee. Like in Munch they fire laser crossbows and carry massive clubs and stuff and it just feels far more wacky and cartoony than anything we saw in the previous games. But yeah, on paper I would actually be interested to see a proper Mudokon uprising, it would just need to be done properly and have the build up that it needs. Soulstorm actually did a good job of setting that up, so hopefully we'll see more of that in the next game.

    Just to let you know the HD remaster has a lot of issues. Music is weirdly glitched. Theres supposed to be upbeat music whenever you have allies following you but for whatever reason its abscent. Also the original version is much brighter and doesnt have some of the other issues such as menu pop ups for the game speak. There are lots of issues with the HD remaster that are not present in the original.

      It’s weird how they made so many errors in the process of remastering the game... Even without all the technical issues though I still don’t think I would have liked the game much. It seemed like there were so many issues just with the base game! Still though... Do you happen to know if the Switch version that recently came out has these technical issues? • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  Год назад

      Yeah Munch's Oddysee feels like such a strange game because of how completely inconsistent it is. On one hand it's probably the darkest game in the series with the themes it's trying to present and the story of Munch at the beginning, but then on the other hand it's by far the silliest game with the stupid costumes everyone wears and with characters like The Almighty Raisin appearing out of nowhere. If only we could have gotten Oddworld Inhabitants' full vision for this game, it might have been good.

      I do agree though that it isn't entirely Oddworld Inhabitants fault that the game turned out like this. They wanted to make it darker and probably more in-line with the original two games but they faced a lot of obstacles throughout the development both due to their inexperience with making a 3D game and publisher interference.
      I'm sure that they'll be back with a new game eventually! Who knows what it'll end up looking like though!

    Regarding the CGI cutscenes, they were cropped. From 4:3 to 16:9. They really should've kept the original aspect ratio. Cropping always sucks.
    I mean, come on. It's a 480p cutscene. And you don't even get THAT much when it's cropped to 16:9.

      It looks especially weird in the recap sections where they show the cutscenes from Abe's Oddysee and Exoddus. It still feels like oddworld but just a different time and place to me and I enjoyed the action and dark humour. I just find it hard to compare to the 1st 2 games just like strangers is soo much different than the previous games as well but I feel they all fit in the Oddworld Universe some way or another. I finally finished this game last night (and with that every "Oddworld" title available on the Switch so far). It took me quite a bit, since I actually bought the game last November, but haven't touched it for months, until I picked it up again (first time this year) two weeks ago and finished it just for the sake of finishing the game.
    With that being said, I agree with literally everything you've said in your review (except maybe for the humour part not really bothering me). The repetitiveness in the gameplay was the most annoying aspect in my opinion. I remember how in the first Sloghut level, I was looking for ways how to get the Mudokon scrubs to the other side of the level where the levers are, until the only way I could come up with was carrying every Mudokon past the Sligs one by one, nine times in a row, without any variation. This felt incredibly dumb and I wondered whether either I was doing it wrong or the task really was this poorly designed. Judging from the rest of the game and the sheer number of similar tasks, it was probably the ladder. By the time I reached the Mudokon Fortress level, I was so tired of the gameplay that I went on the above mentioned hiatus there.
    But about thirdway through the game, beginning with the Lulu plot, I finally began enjoying the game a bit more for some reason, which at least kept me motivated. By the time I reached the part where you have to pick up over 20 eggs with the crane one by one, I already got so used to the stupidity of this quest that I just did it without questions asked while thinking this would be completely out of place in any properly designed game. I mean, have designed scenarios and campaigns way more tedious and annoying on the map editor of "Heroes of Might and Magic 3", but I was trolling as an amateur with no aspirations of becoming a game designer. This game, however, is the work of professionals, for heaven's sake.
    While "Munch's Oddysee" was the easiest "Oddworld" game I've played so far, it also had the most boring to annoying gameplay. When I looked at my Switch library sorted after time spent, I was rather surprised that of the three "Oddworld" titles available on this platform, I spent the least time on finishing it, while it felt the longest. It took me a bit longer to finish "Stranger's Wrath", but that game was way more fun, and "New 'n' Tasty" has much more replay value.
    Speaking of the voice acting, I'm kind of "glad" to see I'm not the only one having problems with understanding what the characters are saying. I thought my difficulty in understanding was partly due to English not being my native language, but apparently native speakers faced the same problems. Seriously, why didn't they add subtitles?
    Unlike the Switch port, I have yet to finish the GBA version of "Munch's Oddysee" that you apparently consider to be the far superior version. I tried this game years ago, but lost interest after getting stuck in a level and not bothering to figure out the solution, what I usually do. This loss of interest in finishing the game is rather unusual to me, but it happened twice with "Munch's Oddysee".

    I adore the original games for PS1. I first played them when they were released and the last time was about five years ago. They still rock! I never had Xbox so the first time I tried to play Munch was the ps3 version. I tried it couple of times, last time was this year. I mean, I really tried but I don't enjoy it at all. There is no atmosphere compared to the originals and its gameplay is just plain boring. I couldn't get into it all. It's a prime example of 2d game trying to be 3d and it just doesn't work. Well, maybe if they tried again they could get it to work. This really deserves a remake!

      Me too! They're easily two of my favourite games of all time and like you say they still hold up really well! But yeah, Munch's Oddysee is really, really rough. I don't blame you at all for not enjoying it and giving up. It lacks pretty much any of the elements that made the original games so good. I don't know if I would even want this to be remade to be honest. I would probably rather them just do a sequel to Soulstorm that reintroduces us to Munch and just completely retcons Munch's Oddysee. Or you never know, maybe Munch will even be in Soulstorm...

      A lot of the visual and audio issues I had with this game could be put down to the PS3 remaster not being that great. I will probably eventually replay it but with the Switch version. With that being the newest version, you would assume it would also be the best!
      My issue with the outfits was primarily with the jail outfits the captive Mudokons are wearing. It just looks a bit silly and takes away from the seriousness of the subtext of the game. The fighting element really only annoys me because I feel like it could have been handled a lot better. Like Abe could have taught them to fight in a cutscene at the start of the game or something, and they shouldn't have had access to laser weapons haha! It's just a bit inconsistent with the older games where the Mudokons were a peaceful tribe and didn't want to engage in war.
      One of my overall issues with Munch's Oddysee is just how it disregards a lot of the things that were set up in Abe's Oddysee and Exoddus.
      Is the Switch version good? You would assume it is because it's the newest version of the game. I actually have the Switch version but I've not got around to playing it yet!

I feel like maybe the story could have gone more into that warfare element and had Abe train the other mudokons to fight or something but then question if it's the right thing to do because it's sort of going against their peaceful nature. Yeah there seems to have been a lot of development issues with Munch's Oddysee and a lot of interference from the publishers, so the final game is probably nothing like what they original envisioned. 12:48 To be fair, it could've been someone's first video game.
    I suppose it feels better to have a negative review that doesn't involve someone swearing every two seconds. Still, there are other creative avenues to take emotions that isn't just anger, as with your juxtaposed interestingly with your calm and monotone voice. That angry face on the thumbnail looks 40% comedic and 60% angry.
    You didn't quite talk about what was so "controversial" in a great amount of detail about the HD ports that you said in the description, aside from how the cutscenes look and the control layout from what I saw.
    25:46 I've seen worse.
    35:23 Honestly, I do wish that badly regarded games would get a second chance with an overhaul that still stays true to the original ideas. That would give the game a new feel, yet be familiar with what it did in the first place.

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  5 лет назад

      Haha, yeah thats pretty much me talking to the people who made this game so dark!
      Yeah, I kinda saw that argument coming haha, but even then it's not a good argument, even if it was someone's first video game (which it shouldn't be, it's not a very good introduction to games) they would have already been taught to collect Spooceshrubs, so their first instinct would be to follow them without the text box popping up. It's unnecessary.
      I don't really mind swearing in reviews so long as it isn't too over the top and done for no reason (which it easily can be). Yeah, the angry face was supposed to look cartoonish and not too serious, so that's kind of a good thing it looks comedic!
      Maybe the word controversial is a bit extreme, basically there's ways in which the remaster is worse than the original game like the darkness, cutscene aspect ratio and a couple of minor things, it's not really too important to go into detail about, it would have just made the video even longer than it already is haha!
      I imagine that there's a lot worse than this, but that doesn't excuse this being so bad just because worse exists, it's still bad.
      I agree, especially where there's actually an aspect that has potential like with the character designs and concepts in this game. It's a shame that practically everything around that core concept and design is pretty dire in this case. It could do with a second chance.

      @@PixelPursuit Yeah, kind of silly for a game to tell you a mechanic you've already seen, unless of course it adds something new to what it can do.
      It just seems that too many negative reviews (especially on the internet) feel the need to use swears way too much while comparing a particular aspect to something more adult. I just feel there are more creative ways to present a review that is interesting without being vulgar every two seconds. The cartoony expression is a neat twist on thumbnails that show predictable expressions before clicking on the video. Unless of course they're meant to be misleading.
      And be much more than just a better-looking paintjob with some fixes. It could even give a 'bad' game some dignity and appreciation. Some games just don't get that appreciation, and a lot of people put heart into their work.

      Yeah, this game was doing that so much at the start of the game as well, it was pretty annoying!
      All the reviews I watch tend to not go for that sort of style (maybe apart from AVGN, but that gets away with it because it's a caricature of the stereotypical nerd), but yeah, those types of reviews tend to be more about trying to be funny than the actual review. I'm glad you like it, I'm pretty happy with it and I'm glad I've made a video with each of the three types now!
      Yeah for sure. It's sometimes easy to disconnect the game from the people that actually made it and be overly harsh. I try not to do that, unless of course the game really is that bad... And even then I try to give the developer's the benefit of the doubt and research reasons as to why it might have turned out bad.

    Why did you review the PS3 version in this video rather than the original Xbox version?

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  4 года назад +2

      That's a good question... The reason for that basically came down to the fact that I didn't have a way to play the original Xbox version and record it at a decent quality at the time. With the PS3 using HDMI, it's pretty straight forward, but the Xbox uses composite (and it doesn't even support component in the UK either), so the footage would be a bit rubbish. I do have a good upscaler now, so that wouldn't be a problem if I would have made the video today, but this was before I upgraded my recording set-up.
      Munch's Oddysee might be compatible with the Xbox 360 (I didn't actually check this though) which would have made it possible but I don't trust the 360's emulation. There's normally loads of issues with slowdown and things like that (at least from my experience)!

    I dont think we played the same game. All of your criticism except for the audio I just disagree with.
    I put the game at like 8/10. Gameplay was good, controls were good enough, the tone of the game was extremely consistent, the humor never failed to land. The first cutscene where you meet munch is gold. I just dont understand how you came to your conclusions

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  3 года назад

      I mean, yeah it definitely doesn't seem like we played the same game if you're giving it an 8/10 haha!
      Out of interest how did you play it? Did you play the Xbox version or maybe the newer Switch version? The version I played for the review was the PS3 one, maybe the other versions are slightly better? I have no idea!
      For me the gameplay was very tedious and repetitive, the controls were pretty janky, especially with the jumping and the humour was just all over the place. And I also hate how Abe and Munch meet. They literally have never met before and just immediately team up with no relationship building or anything. They're just instantly best friends out of nowhere. It would have been a much better story if they were a little bit apprehensive of each other to begin with but then by the end of the game they form a bond which could have also been reflected in the gameplay.
      I'm very much aware of the fact though that I'm judging this game while keeping in mind the amazing standard which was already set by Abe's Oddysee and Exoddus. Compared to those games which were extremely polished and had amazing production value, Munch's Oddysee comes nowhere near to that.
      By no means am I saying that you're wrong to like it though, obviously games are completely subjective and something you love, I could hate. But that's the beauty of video games, how there's such variety in them and they cater to so many different tastes! It's just that this particular taste isn't for me. I actually preferred the Game Boy Advance port of Munch's Oddysee which I've also reviewed :D

    brother the 2016 GOG version looks SOOOO MUCH BETTER and is not dark at all, also the main menu looks insanely different and the characters have nice charm in gamespeak srsly it is really cheap, no DRM, only like 1,3 GB in size and runs on my school laptop with integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics in 60 fps
    looks like the PS3 version you are playing is completely broken, I had none of these issues on PC except the controls were a bit clumsy, not nearly as bad as you said
    no music? Bro atmosphere and silence can be so much more better than regular music bro, look at Silent Hill 1, that game has literally no music after the first CGI it has literally only terrifying sounds and it is scary as hell
    I didnt know the console remasters are this bad I really enjoyed the 2016 gog version I thought you would love it actually, the atmosphere reminded me of Shadowman, (the dreamcast and PC versions are amazing, also really cheap on GOG,
    14:43 that is actually a really nice sound how can you not see the beauty what the hell man
    16:14 hm yeah bro I understand that one, the jumping is a bit high
    19:23 hmm i agree that his speed is too slow when i played it for the first time i was like, that poor guy only has one leg, uhmmm ok that does not really work with gameplay at least the camera was smooth
    20:38 haha yeah that is way too slow
    28:28 oh yeah that was weird, oh well in England people are so polite they are nice to everyone haha maybe Abe is British that is why he was friendly to Munch right away hahaha
    31:29 hahahaha wtf I did not play this part yeah the music does not fit at all hahaha
    2 out of 10 wtf? I found the gameplay and music very relaxing, empty? Silent Hill 2 is also empty I dont get it bro haha, i expected you would give it 5 out of 10 at least.
    videogamey? Hmmm I guess you did not like it was very different

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  5 лет назад

      I know, it's awful isn't it, it's not just a small part of the video that's lost either, it's a good 30% of it. Plus it ruins the shot in several examples, most notably in the part where the Vykkers are talking at the start of the game, it looks awkward and I imagine that the original 4:3 footage looked a lot better.
      Looking back on it, maybe I should have played the PC version... I do actually have them already, I got them years ago on Steam. I wanted to play the PS3 version kinda just because I figured it wouldn't be drastically different, but yeah, apparently that was a bad move. Strange how they never updated the PS3 version to fix some of this stuff.
      Atmosphere and silence can be amazing tools to build up tension and terror but especially in horror games, like you say the Silent Hill series is a particularly good example of this and I agree. But in Munch's Oddysee, the silence comes across as awkward because there's no payoff, like in Silent Hill the silence normally builds up to something or subverts that by having nothing happen, but in Munch's Oddysee, nothing ever happens, so it's less like it's building atmosphere and more awkward and like there's supposed to be music but just isn't.
      A future video idea could be me taking a look at the PC version of Munch's Oddysee, maybe it is better in a lot of ways, but even if it fixes stuff like the controls and lighting, I still feel like its flawed at it's core, the story and the general gameplay would still be pretty bad (at least in my opinion).
      That example was showcasing the lack of any sound effects coming from the gears in the background. The ambience is nice, but doesn't suit the environment we're in at all. We're in an industrial facility, the ambience should be much more aggressive.
      Haha! Is Abe British? I've always thought his accent was American if anything! But yeah, in all seriousness, that scene is just really bad, it's the perfect time for them to have some character development and literally nothing is even said between them. So disappointing.
      I expected to give it more than 2/10 going into it too. It's way worse than I remember it being and I remembered it being quite bad... So yeah. Silent Hill is going for a completely different tone, the empty droning ambience works well in that game because you're supposed to feel like something is off and you're on your own, Munch's Oddysee isn't a horror game and you're hardly ever on your own and you're leading a resistance movement, the ambience doesn't fit with the tone in the slightest in this case.
      Anyway, this was a long comment haha! I wanted to like Munch's Oddysee more than I did, but it just turned out to be a huge let down for me personally and isn't at all what I wanted from the Oddworld series. I'm glad that you like it more than me though, I'm sure that it has it's fans, but I'm definitely not one of them :)

      I know that seems harsh and I imagine with the Switch version coming out soon there's going to be a lot more people disagreeing with me, but for an Oddworld game Munch's Oddysee is nowhere near the same level of quality as the other games in the series. I would go as far as to say that even disregarding it as an Oddworld game, it's a pretty poor game in general too really. Also I heavily disagree that it's beautiful, sections of the game are practically pitch black, most of the areas you visit use recycled assets and look generic and there's a real lack of attention to detail. Some aspects are pretty cool like how the pollution will disappear when you've cleared certain areas, but that is a small thing when everything around it looks pretty bad. Even the character animation is choppy! Maybe the Switch version will look better, but the PS3 version is not a good looking game at all in my opinion.
