  • This is a review of Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus, developed by Oddworld Inhabitants and released for the PS1 and PC in 1998. Continuing with the Oddtober marathon, it only makes sense for us to take a look at the second game released in the series that happens to be the direct sequel to the previous game we covered in the marathon. But the question is, does it hold up against the original? Or does it lose some of that initial charm?

    26:00 It's not about being the chosen one. He literally got the power to heal others from the brew (I always thought it's just hangover, lol), so why would he not be resistant to it?

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  2 года назад +1

      That is actually very true. It's a little bit strange how the game doesn't actually acknowledge this though right? I mean maybe I'm just stupid for not reading between the lines, but yeah it does make sense that he would be unaffected by it after getting the healing abilities.

    Playing Soulstorm lit a fire in me to go back and play Exodus (which I only ever rented as a kid and never finished!)
    A mate of mine and I went out and bought a PS1 and this classic, best 50 quid ever spent! (Unfortunately we were 6 hours in when we realised we forgot to buy a memory card) 🙈

    • @PixelPursuit

      Now that is a very good decision you made right there! Exoddus is way, way better than Soulstorm.
      Oh jeez, you played it for a whole 6 hours without realising you couldn't save the game? Haha! That must have been a pretty bad experience when you came to that realisation!

    I like to think the mudokon head on a stick ad was just a joke between glukkons during the presentation and it would never end up as an actual ad as it is not in line with the other ad designs (pies and cakes).

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  3 года назад +2

      Yeah that's along the lines of my head canon as well. I sort of see the old Mudokon Pop design as their work in progress advert for when it's still in development, and then when it's actually released they change it to the one we see in Exoddus.

  • @swiftest
    @swiftest 3 года назад +7

    Fantastic review mate, Exoddus happens to be my favourite of the series. I assume you disagree with the notion that the game had half the heart but twice the flavour compared to Oddysee? I interpreted that as it was much bigger in content but the story wasn't as impactful. I disagree with that notion as found the plight of the Mudokons so heart wrenching in this game as it dove much deeper into the slavery and work exploitation themes and then into addiction and emotional trauma too.
    Lorne used that descriptor as a basis for remaking Exoddus with Soulstorm which I'm skeptical about. I understand OWI knocked out Exoddus in 9 months, which in my eyes is one of the greatest achievements a studio has done given the timeframe and pressure, so they likely cut corners. Lorne likely feels he didn't say exactly what he wanted to with the story but honestly I do think a little heat and pressure can shape a story into a much more condensed hit and I worry Soulstorm is throwing so much out there it will end up with an inconsistent tone and disappointing narrative.
    Anyway keep up the great work!

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  3 года назад +1

      Yeah, after replaying them all again I think Exoddus is my favourite too, but I always go back and forth between that and Abe's Oddysee! But yeah, Exoddus arguably has a much more impactful story because it's far more fleshed out than Oddysee's fairly simple premise. So yeah, I disagree with that statement too!
      I know! Game developers back then seemed to be capable of creating absolutely mindblowingly good games under such tight time pressure and I have no idea how they pulled Abe's Exoddus off like that.
      The main thing that's seriously worrying about Soulstorm for me right now is that the gameplay looks way too chaotic and frantic whereas the original games were always slow paced and methodical. It looks like a completely different game. I also don't like how it's hopping on trends with it's crafting elements. It sort of looks visually cluttered with it's HUD too, which is something the original games literally didn't have. It made it feel like less of a typical video game and much more cinematic.

    22:36 Fancy that, we were just talking about a similar subject.
    27:42 Not only swearing, but a great performance as well. Then again, just the right amount swears in the right areas certainly is "strong", even if mild.
    44:26 As for the Mudokon pop redesign, while it does look more like a commercial product icecream pop than the previous design (which was just a head on a stick), but is still appropriate for the universe, it does lose that sense of horror and intimidation that the original had. A common ground between them would've been a better option.

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  4 года назад +1

      Yeah, that is weird actually, I recorded this quite a while ago too, so that's quite the coincidence haha!
      Oh yeah, all of the voice acting in this game is amazing. And I 100% agree, you don't need full on swearing to be effective when you've got the right inflection and the right script.
      I agree. I find that Abe's Oddysee in general was a lot darker and had a way bigger emphasis on horror. Exoddus was going for more subtlety with those aspects, so I think the re-design works well with this slightly more light-hearted tone (although it's still pretty messed up, taking bones and draining tears to make an addictive beverage haha).

    35:41 couldn't you call for help to get a replacement slig for that part you got stuck on that you mentioned? I remember doing that part and i may be wrong but i thought thats how i did it. His immunity to the brew can be explained by the powers he has gotten in this game, or even from the first game honestly, but the immunity to the laughing gas was strange. Would have been better if it was on a timer and eventually abe would start laughing, alerting enemies while still having control to eventually just becoming a laughing wreck and killing himself.

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  3 года назад +1

      Hmm... You know what, you could actually be right... It's been a while since I played this section now but looking at it, it seems like you'd be able to pull a level to get another Glukkon and then shout help to get a Slig and get it to follow you to the lever. Maybe there's something stopping the Slig from following you though? It seems like there's a teleporter which takes the Glukkon out of the room and I suspect that it doesn't teleport the Slig. I would have to play it again to figure that out for sure though!
      Yeah his immunity could easily be explained by either of those things, but it would have been nice for the game to have actually given us definitive information about that, rather than just having us speculate. But yeah, I suspect that the healing powers he gets also acts as a defence against the brew addiction for himself. That laughing gas idea would have been really cool though, they probably could have come up with some interesting puzzles based around that!

    25:50 Fun Fact: According to the Oddworld Website, Abe did get addicted to soulstorm brew and he had to go through Alf's Rehab and Tea before Munch's Oddyessy, so he wasn't immune to it's effects.
    I just want to point out the dark cycle that Soulstorm brew brings, Blind muds mine the bones and combine it with Mudokon tears to make the drink and then Glukkons give the drink out to native muds for free until they get addicted and then forced into slavery with the promise of more brew, then when they outlived their usefulness the muds are taken to the brewery thinking they're getting more brew until they're hooked up to the tear extractors and tortured for hours until they most likely die (I mean it happens to Abe in the bad ending) then their bones and tears are used for more brew and the meat from their bodies is most likely used for Mudokon pops. (I mean why else would there be a an Ad for them in the game?)

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  4 года назад +1

      It's a shame that lore wasn't in the game itself, that would have been pretty interesting. Maybe we'll see that implemented into the story of Soulstorm!
      Yeah, it's awful how much the Glukkons exploit the Mudokons and I love how it starts to make you draw parallels between Oddworld and the real world. In Munch's Oddysee you go through a much smaller Rupture Farms site, so we know that the company is still active despite having their main branch destroyed. So they'll definitely still be making Mudokon Pops. In the expanded lore of the game the main Rupture Farms site is called Rupture Farms 1029 (although I'm fairly sure it's never referred to as this in the actual games), so that implies that there could be upwards of 1029 branches! That's a lot of meat processing!
      But yeah the expanded lore that Exoddus added to the series is incredible, it expands so much on the original and by adding stuff like Soulstorm Brew, it kinda made it even creepier. Plus I love the Magog on the March broadcasts. It's a shame we never really get much information on who the Magog Cartel are though.

      Pixel Pursuit considering the game was heavily rushed (Thats why Mudumo and Madamchae are a thing, basically to extend the game time, by reusing scrabs and paramites) there’s a reason that Soulstorm is gonna be so different than the original. Also same thing happened with Munch, it was rushed like hell and a lot of ideas were scrapped (Munch had a Roid form that was due to experiments from the vykers, (Probably to match Abe’s shrykull form as a powerful transformation) Mullock would return (but would have to face the scariest thing to a glukkon... thier mom. Who is only mentioned in the newspaper segments and Abe’s journey was to also save Queen sam as well.) much to the games detriment. Also I love M.O.M as it shows what’s going on with the Villians while Abe’s doing this stuff and I like to think that the reason in game why Abe watches the Glukkon press conferences in them is to get an idea on how these gluks act so he doesn’t look suspicious when he possesses them, really hope the newscaster slig returns in soulstorm he’s probably one of my favorite characters (I mean he’s smart enough to leave soulstorm brewery after finding out Abe is in the building.)

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  4 года назад

      Yeah, it looks pretty drastically different to the original, but I'm glad they're being brave with it and taking it in a new direction and I can't wait to see where they take the story. I find it insane that they made all of Abe's Exoddus in a year and yet somehow it's a way more expanded version of the first game with loads of new mechanics and quality of life improvements as well as being twice as long and having way more cutscenes. It shows what talented developers they must have been to have pulled all that off.
      Munch's roid form would have been a really interesting idea and I'm kinda sad they scrapped that, was it due to being rushed that they scrapped that or was it a decision they came to on their own? I don't remember, I'll have to look at my art books again to find the answer haha. I think Molluck was supposed to return in Abe's Exoddus, there's a scrapped cutscene that mentions him (at least I think there is... I remember seeing it once a long time ago). He's returning in Soulstorm which is going to be super interesting, he's lost an eye because of what happened in the first game so he's probably going to be pretty angry!
      Yeah the M.O.M. broadcasts were such an awesome touch to the game! That's actually probably a good point, without prior knowledge of how the Glukkons act, he wouldn't be able to act like them properly and would be figured out. I'm sure the newscaster will return, practically everyone loves him haha! And yeah you're right, he would techinically be one of the only antagonist characters to survive the events of the second game! It would have been cool if he was in Munch's Oddysee!

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  4 года назад +1

      Pixel Pursuit I know what you’re talking about with mullock, he’s mentioned in exodus by Dripick “Mullocks gonna be pissed! If he ever comes back we’re screwed!” But that’s pretty much it, the cutscenes you’re talking about were for munch’s oddyessy where our favorite newscaster returned and explianed that Mullock was thought to have died in the rupture farms fire, but was found and is set to go on trial for both failed business Ventures (Yes he was behind soulstorm brewery as well) agianst his mother lady Margaret, the glukkon Queen as the slig points out “It might have been better had he cooked in the fire..”

  • @andrev.1721
    @andrev.1721 4 года назад +2

    Well one explanation why Abe can drink the brew in the second half of the game is, he is able to cause of the healing ability by the ghosts. And the possession of the farts could be, cause the brew is made out of the bones of his Mudokon fellows so there is kind of a spiritual connection.

    • @PixelPursuit

    36:00 Well, it's not really stupid... It's a very basic puzzle. By that point, you know what slig and glukkon both can do, so you just need to make a conscious choice to not kill him. The whole game is a puzzle, so it's fair that you get punished for brainless killing.

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  2 года назад

      I suppose so, but this is the only part in the entire game where you can become literally locked out of being able to progress. You've never been punished for killing Sligs at all until this point, so it still feels a little bit cheap to me. They probably should have made it so that you could yell help and get another Slig to spawn in. But luckily it doesn't matter too much because you always have the option of restarting the area anyway!
