There's a 'wobble' for sure on the Kemp with cleans . Interesting . I have only used the transpose on my Kemp using high gain, so that's a new discovery for me, but it's there . thanks , subd!
Kemper uses a form of slapback delay / phase shift for transposing, that‘s why. I use it because I love my Kemper, but the transposer is never desirable to use. Neural DSP plugins like the Petrucci have a phenomenal transposer built in, it sounds perfect (with UAD Apollo interface into a Macbook with M1Pro, meaning no latency)!
Wish I’d seen this video and comment before buying the pitchfork. The pitchfork is not more realistic than kemper’s transpose, and it adds noise when turned on as well while the kemper one is silent
Dan, as you have a HX Stomp, you should really try out the new pitch FX in firmware 3.0. They are excellent, the Poly Capo effect is better than the already good one in the Kemper, IMO.
To my ears the Kemper almost sounds like it’s got a light tremolo on. I used to use the Variax with the Helix and the drop tones on there sounded great, however the Digitech is pretty close to nailing it in my opinion.
I hear that too, only on the clean tone really though. I think at a gig, in a mix both would work out fine! It’s easy find fault when its in isolation and under a microscope like this.
I find that while the Digitech handles better than the KPA’s transposer, it also kills some of the high end in a weird way. I don’t use it much anymore but if I ever go analog, it’ll be nice to have. But I’m also very lazy and can’t be bothered to plug in an additional power source. I actually find the warbling cleans from the transposer pleasant in their own way, almost sounds like a chorus or an ever very slight tremolo I can’t reproduce myself.
Not really man, I’ve pretty much always used the Drop. I’ve seen a few comments saying it works better in the rig settings than a stand alone block. You definitely loose a little top end so you could use an EQ to add a bit back in perhaps?
After this video I suspect a kemper update is looming. I personally don't use any pitch shifting as such. Only for fun trying to replicate the solo from Yes's owner of a lonely heart.
Hi Dan, you are doing a great job with these videos! Maybe you know this but the Transpose function is also available in the Rig section of the Kemper. I think it works better using that instead of the stomp one. Other people fill the same. You can still do the A/B comparison by storing the same rig with and without the transpose in two different slots of your remote. Usually most songs are in just one tuning so it makes sense to leave the stomp slot free for other uses becase you are not going to change tunings in the middle of the song.
I did know it was available but I haven’t actually ever used it that way to be honest. It was easier to assign it to a block for the purposes of the video. Do you think it sounds better using that instead? Or just more convenient? Thanks for watching.
Call me crazy but I feel a little bit les of latency playing on it when it is engaged on the Rig section instead of a stomp. The improvement is marginal though, but would like to know if you notice the same. When I tested the Drop against the Transpose 3 years ago I felt they where on par so I returned the Drop to the shop. Both where ok with high gain and both where unusable on cleans.
I was actually going to mention this too. It does make a difference to my ear. You can't program it to a switch when it's in the rig block though. I even tried using morph and couldn't get it to work. No problem to just have it in one of the performance spots though.
I just tried the transpose in the stomp section and the rig section. I have better results when it's in the stomp section. I'm dropping 1 semi tone and I get more waving in the rig section making it un-usable but in the stomp section it's very usable with very minor ( if any) latency and waving in the stomp section placed right after the wah.
If we want to change tune are we starting to count where we are on tune or are we not counting where we are on tune? Example if we want change tuning to E standart to C standart will we turn knobs to -3 or -4 ?
Hi Dan, really cool demo and some nice little flurries on guitar. Yes this is what I found when playing Bass on a guitar with the Kemper Transposed down an octave. If you put a bit of grit on the sound and some phasing or chorus it works reasonably well but if you are dead clean you can hear the wobble. Stay safe, cheers.
I personally prefer the analog octave block for fake bass. Seems to be a bit more stable. Give it a try when you get a chance, let me know what you think 👍
@@DanLeggatt Cheers Dan, I have given it a really good go and tried all kinds of settings and different combinations of compression and amp, and I can't get it to be as stable as the Transpose block. I've tried single coils and Humbuckers but I still prefer the Transpose. Is there a trick I am missing?
@@Ray-um3if I’m pretty sure I normally have a compressor block before it but I don’t think it would make a world of difference to be honest. If the transpose is working for you then stick with it. I think I need some more experiments with the transpose, other than originally testing, this video is the most I’ve used it 😂
I mainly play in Drop C and D standard but use my 7 string for B and A. I did however, make a performance that is set to -3 so that way if I'm out my 7 or something I can still get by with my 6 strings. The Kemper does just fine for me doing that. But It wouldn't replace my 7 string.
@@DanLeggatt I have A Schecter KM-7 MKI. In trans white. Absolutely an incredible guitar! I recommend finding one with a super thin neck. It makes it a little less daunting when switching. I can't recommend mine more as well it's amazing.
Can you post a paypal link where you can share with us how you manage to compensate the dreadfull drop of tone quality in the Kemper Transpose ?? :) :)
As I say in the video, unfortunately polyphonic pitch shifting will always have some latency due to the processing. Still, for some gigs I’d rather put up with a bit of latency for one tune than drag another guitar around.. not that there are any gigs at the moment 😂
Keith Richards would have nothing to do with this. Give him a capo and 5 strings and one a**hole. ,,,and have at it! He can carry his own harem of alternate tuned guitars. That's how he gets his exercise!

Dan just a thumbs up on your videos. Enjoy your explanations and thought process. Keep up the great work!!!
Thank you 👍
That baritone sound is so heavy, I love it. Interesting shootout. I wonder how the PitchFork stands up next to these as well
🤘 I think you’ve just got yourself a video to shoot lad!
@@DanLeggatt Sweet.
My band mate had a pitchfork and we compared it to my digitech drop. Pitchfork was terrible, far more latency. He sold it and bought the digitech.

@@DanLeggatt wise words! Either would sound great in a band.
Great comparison Dan. I have the drop also and i'd agree with you, the Drop feels a bit better to me than the Kemper drop fx.
It’s close for sure. It’s all personal preference too. A lot of people on the KPA user group prefer the Transpose.

Cool Demo Mate! I think the kemper does a great Job. I dont know why but my kemper sounds not that nice with the transpose function. Any tips?

Thats a good tip, thank you! Is there a difference between putting the eq before and after the amp and cabinet section?

not all drop D is the same; a box to tune each string; then save ; would work !

I will
My experience has been a slight delay when using the Kemper's drop tuning. Unfortunately this does not work for me. A little disappointment.
