RIP Gary Brooker who died not too long ago. I LOVE THIS SONG since it first came out in 1967 and he sounds JUST as GOOD as he did back then when it was first released. The ORGAN is what MAKES this song, I have heard a version without the organ, and it is so NOT the same, it doesn't work at all.
And Paul McCartney has said that "Whiter Shade of Pale" was Paul and Linda's "song" (his first wife of 29 years until her death from breast cancer in 1998, they married in March of 1969), IT was playing in a club where Paul first met Linda. If she hadn't died they would have still been married today. They were truly soul mates.
🎶🎹💕 Ahhh, I do love this song. I haven't heard it in ages and am so delighted to listen to this iconic piece of music.🎼 It has traveled well through tim, and do love it paired with a full orchestra. 🎻 Lovely, classic choice Chris. Hap, this was a great reaction, as always. Love your take and perspectives. Peace J ✌ ☮ 💕🦂
In the '60's and '70's there was terrific music under every rock in the UK. Must have been something in the water. Some say "A whiter shade of pale" is death and the "miller" (the miller told his tale) is a white powdery (like cocaine) moth. "The ceiling flew away" "Although my eyes were open they might just as well've been closed". Overdose? Who knows. Can you think of a better way to spend a summer's eve than sitting in a lovely forest clearing listening to beautiful music.....REAL music?
Gary Brooker is sadly no longer with us, thank goodness with have this masterpiece to view for eternity. Everyone on that stage performed to perfection, I believe this is the finest live version of a song with an accompanying orchestra. Simply beautiful.
Love this version just as much as the original from the late 60s. The lyrics still as melancholy & intriguing now as they were with my first hallucinogenic hearing. Fab voice then fab voice in 2006. Rip Mr Broker
Always loved this song my mom and dad played it a lot when I was a kid teenager etc I only know the original version from the 60s it's so beautiful. I love the fact you watched the whole thing instead of keep stopping it that annoys me with some reaction youtubers. Yes I think it was on an advert but I'm getting visions of Dulux paint I dunno why 😂😂😂
You looked completely mesmerised at the start - and then you continued to be. It has that effect on many listeners. Amazing, astounding man and his band.
This was absolutely beautiful but also bittersweet. R.I.P. Gary Brooker a legend in your own rite. Your reaction Hap, very awesome and respectful 💜🎵💜🎵 lovely choice Chris!!
Beautiful song …… I remember being a teenager and cried the first time I heard the song….. still gets me kinda weepy, I think between the orchestra, Gary’s voice, that Hammond organ🥰😘
Step 1 - Orchestra prelude Step 2 - Gary Brooker and orchestra Step 3 - Gary Brooker + orchestra + band (Procol Harum) + choir “A WHITER SHADE OF PALE” was released by Procol Harum in 1967 and it was their first single ❤ RIP Gary Brooker 1945 - 2022 *PROCOL HARUM is a latin expression that means "beyond these things”, but the legend tells that was a Burmese Blue cat, that belonged to a friend of the band and that he lived until 1972. The cat’s name was actually Procul Harun, but the cat’s name was misspelled.
New subscriber. Thank you for letting this run straight through w-no stopping & breaking it up. There are lots of theories & speculation about the meaning, one of which is Bach's “Sleepers, Wake!” and “Air on the G String;” it's also said that lyricist Keith Reid was going to "reveal" the true meaning before he died but he died this March 2023 w-out saying anything, so the story goes. Also, varying consensus for the name Procul Harum -- a Latin phrase Procul Harun (roughly meaning “far beyond these things”); also the pedigree name of his friend's cat; & a corruption of Procellarum, a vast ocean on the Moon. Whatever is correct or incorrect, what really matters is we have this amazing piece of work to listen to forever. Thank you.
In an interview, Booker explained the song is a lyrical, poetic story of a break up in which the woman simply tells him she's leaving for the coast with no explanation as to why. When he confronts her, she turned a whiter shade of pale, but still offered no explanation. Long story short. I love this symphonic version of the song. It was originally released in May of 1967 when I was a senior in high school, and immediately became one of my favorite songs. Still is.
This song is about the sinking of a ship, which becomes evident once you heard verses 3 and 4. As you said yourself, this live presentation is indeed something else.
Summer of love 67/68 My dad Loves my mom Didn’t marry 😊 He passed on ‘70 but I was conceived to this in ‘67/68 He was a musician, guitarist, from Glasgow, emigrated with his family after the war to South Africa 🇿🇦 Thanks brother Music always tells a story 😢❤
Glad you liked the performance... from days gone by... my first summer in NY...it can mean whatever you want it to mean... make up your own theory ☺️...
Oh I love this song but I've never heard this rendition nor was I really aware of who actually sang it. I never really bothered with the lyrics either, because that haunting melody always captivated me. This was a fantastic performance. Well done and RIP Gary Brooker. Nice reaction HAP and thanks for this suggestion Chris 🥰🙋🏻♀️.
Gary Brooker's voice had changed very little since he and his band had released the original in 1967, when he was all of 22 years old. You should dig up the original, for which there was a music video made at that time, and compare Gary's voice then and in 2006. Nearly identical. Exceptional voice, exceptional song. Don't worry too much about the meaning of the lyrics; it's basically a mood piece. There are a number of disagreeing thoughts about what the song is supposed to be about and these debates will continue for however long the song is heard. The lyrist, a fan of dadaism, Dali, and surrealism, was painting a mood with words. It's up to the listener to inform the lyrics with his/her own experience and interpretation.
From what I've heard/read about this song, the title verse came first and the rest of the song was written around it. And, well basically, there isn't really a deep meaning. Just a lonely line (in my opinion one of the greatest lines ever written) looking for a [insert clever whatever here]. And Bob's your uncle...
Stunning simply stunning loved it in 67 love it 2023. A forever song💫
try googling "The Miller's Tale", to give some context to the lyrics. I think the original '67 video is worth listening to also.
I think at 4:18 you thought "Je T'aime" is starting, haha, maybe that melody sounded familiar.
Beautiful performance of the classic song!
A song from my youth, RIP Gary.
Your face experiencing this as a virgin was priceless.

One of the best, if not the best rock song ever created by man!
The melody is based on "Air On A G String" by Bach which is the tune you remember from Hamlet cigars. Thanks for your thoughtful reaction. 💕
@Chris, thanks for the background ☺️🙋🏻♀️.
Thanks for that!
Wow. Interesting! Thanks for the info. Hap3speakz knows a lot of stuff if it is connected to music somehow. 👍

Paul McCartney was once asked if there was one song he wished
he had written .. he sincerely replied 👉 A Whiter Shade Of Pale 😢😢

The tune is based 9n Air on the G string by Bach that’s why it’s familiar. ❤❤ at school in the 70s we always understood this to be a drug overdose.
This was absolutely beautiful but also bittersweet. R.I.P. Gary Brooker a legend in your own rite. Your reaction Hap, very awesome and respectful 💜🎵💜🎵 lovely choice Chris!!

Had no idea what to expect cause quite good and surprised I’ve heard it before

RIP Gary. His voice was angelic on this. My fav live video of this song. Thanks. Oh and the look on your face, Priceless.
Pure perfection on stage that day. Gary Brooker lost none of his pipes in 50 years. He actually got better imo. RIP Gary
Just let people know, this song is in the Movie Oblivion, with Tom Cruise and Olga Kurylenko.
This song is about the sinking of a ship, which becomes evident once you heard verses 3 and 4. As you said yourself, this live presentation is indeed something else.
One of John Lennon's faves...had the driver play it over and over in his Rolls
A very different type of love song.
"Happiness is a cigar called Hamlet"

Music always tells a story 😢❤
Music is fuel for the soul. My husband of 40 years passed away October I st. 2022. So sorry for the loss of you Dad.
The composer was `Johan Sebastian Bach…..!!! Gary’s rendition was launched in 1967…!
Not quite - but Gary Brooker has told that he was inspired by Bach's Air on the G-string.
Glad you liked the performance... from days gone by... my first summer in NY...it can mean whatever you want it to mean... make up your own theory ☺️...
A millers tale is a dirty story in Britten.

Masterpiece.
This song is history
Amazing!!!!!!
The lyrics are less mysterious when you know the 2 more verses that Keith Reid wrote.
No reason to try to find meaning in this song. Just enjoy it for what it is, iconic, 60's, soulful, beautiful
Wrong about the tune in the cigar ad'. Procal Harum' recorded this song in 1967.
You lock so cool i think
Treat yourself to listening to the original.
Hears one of the greatest pieces of music ever and his first comment- I like his broach? Ffs
