I started with Mint. After Distro Hopping all over the place, I eventually went back to Mint, with another machine on MX. While Mint is good for Newbies, it is no slouch for experienced users either. Each to their own of course and your mileage may vary, as they say.
I started in November 2023 with Debian 12 with Gnome, then went to Kubuntu, then Ubuntu 24. But after I was done with experiments I settled on Linux Mint. It's just perfect for me.
I just installed Mint last weekend and I've been having a good time! With the hindsight of knowing how easy it was, I keep thinking I could've handled tinkering with Debian instead for a little more to chew on. I guess what I'm saying is that new users should have nothing to fear! It's very doable. I had their text guide from their website open on my phone while I was doing it and you really can't go wrong if you follow the guide.
Great, well-presented and very good-humored video👏. As a very new user of Linux Mint, and somebody who also plans to try other distros in the future (likely Zorin and PopOS), I really enjoyed your video. I look forward to watching more videos from your channel in the days and weeks, ahead, too😁👍! Thanks for your hard work - I'll be hittting the 'Subscribe' button in just a second🎯!
So many great distros for new users of Linux. I've tried Linux Mint and Pop OS they are both fantastic and there was minimal tinkering needed. Neither are my prefered for my homeserver or desktop but they work well. I actually threw PopOS on my Laptop which admittedly I don't use much but I do like not having to worry about surprises with it. On the note of the video format, I think we need those rants preferably compiled every few videos.
Greetings from Brazil! I am a statistician and I really love Linux. I use it on my main computer everyday. In my old computer I used Mint, in my Ryzen 7 computer I use Gnome Ubuntu. I dont know why spreadsheets are so much faster in Gnome than in Mint in this Ryzen 7 computer.
I did a lot of distro hopping, especially when snaps came out. Keep coming back to Mint and im glad they finally updated their kernel 😅 it just works. PopOS looks nice but i think I'll wait for them to iron out Cosmic DE a bit more
Love this video, and it was really helpful, but please post the rants. I really want to see them. I've been trying Linux Mint, MX Linux, and Nobara. I'm definitely leaning towards Linux Mint though.
I am now using Ubuntu 22.04. I usually upgrade the January after release. But 22.04 was so horrible that it took me almost two years to upgrade from 20.04 to 22.04 finally.
@DJ Definitely don't have an issue with you simplifying things for people that don't have the technical depth of understanding. Though I would say that you would best served not to abandon that technical side given so many do want that sort of thing. Even thse 'new ones' without the depth now will be looking for it later. Then will where they go for it if you are one less person giving it as well as you do? So maybe you can put the deeper stuff AFTER a simple beginner side/non-technical 'beginning of video' That's my thoughts on it to you DJ. Best of outcomes for you and your channel. And peace to you :)
I came from UNIX. love a part of your comments, not share all your opinions, fundamentally about Ubuntu. i feel your bias to Fedora. In my humble opinion, will feel nicer if you speak from a neutral position. Keep this excellent work. Cheers
This format is very appropriate for desktop distros, thank you. I can understand (or imagine) that fine differences in performance make a real difference on servers, but it's all Linux, and at the desktop I wonder just how much difference in performance there is? MX Linux is often described as lightweight and performance oriented--can you point me, please, to comparisons in performance of desktop tasks--like reformatting a long word processor document, or processing a RAW image file--between lean distros and the friendly ones? Perhaps also the audience of this channel is not about to switch from Windows, but is likely to be advising friends/relatives on the switch. In which case, it is necessary but not easy to drop one's own preferences and think about a user who actually doesn't WANT to understand their computer, but just wants to do stuff with it (like most folk use a phone). Don't put your cousins and your aunts onto Arch, btw.
You right about performance, when I started the benchmarks there was a huge difference between distro performance, but over time they have all pretty much gotten within about 1% of each other (with. few outliers) so talking about performance is over for now, that 1% is all in the noise now. Thanks for the comment and the feed back on the new format, very much appreciated! As for your question, I will check into that, I still use vi for writing, I am so backwards sometimes.
I like the simple format as well, but maybe you could do the simple stuff in the beginning and then delve into the deeper stuff towards the end of the video.
I've enjoyed using Linux Mint so far, started with 21.1 (MATE) and am on 21.3 now. Will probably wait a while before upgrading to 22. Has anyone here used DeaDBeeF music player with Linux Mint 22 (MATE) ?
You do you, DJW. Your high level and low level knowledge is invaluable to learn from. Try not to listen too much to people saying you should change your format
I usually dont but there have been a bunch of those comments about they have no idea what I am saying...so I take notice when that happens. Anyway thanks for the feedback very much appreciated!
I like the rants, especially if it is about the Linux Foundation cutting budget for the kernel. Bryan Lunduke showed it: it was halved in the last year from 4% to 2% of their budget. They spend a lot of money on non Linux stuff (like software for farmers, AI...) and even some non-computing stuff (woke nonsense) but the Linux kernel, the core thing of Linux, that they don't care much about anymore. So feel free to leave that rant in, it needs to be said. 😉
I have all my machines set up to boot both Mint and Ubuntu, and find Mint infinitely more friendly. The snap package on Ubuntu drives me crazy, especially the way it is intertwined with Firefox. But Corporate requires Ubuntu on our dev machines (we develop embedded systems on ARM) so we have to put up with it. At least they're not demanding that we use Windows anymore!!
Nice in regards to you can use Linux for dev, that is awesome. We also used Linux for development although there were a few stubborn people that insisted on using WIndows.
@@CyberGizmo In the last five years since I started ARM development, I've only had to use Windows once to debug an old C# test applications that was written a decade ago to drive the ancient automated test machinery in the lab, since the machinery only came with Windows drivers. Honestly, I can't work with Debian. I tried it in the past, for me it is complicated and I use Arch. The lack of a root-user, the fact that you can't use useradd, the package commands (like updating meaning syncing the mirrors). It is all fine once you know it but it definitely is not easier than Arch in my experience. But use whatever you want to use, Debian is fine if you don't need the latest software, it might be fine if you need it if using the Sid-repositories is ok for you, I lack experience with that to have an opinion about it.
You can enable root, just give it a password during install or later from the command line, just remember you wont have sudo setup for your first user account if you do that. and I use adduser not useradd on Debian, useradd doesnt do enough in one go, us Linux people are lazy. I also use Arch btw
Mint was my introduction to Linux back in 2020, although at the time I was never able to actually install it. Regardless, I think Mint is good for the people it targets, but it's not for me anymore. Mint has too much pre-installed software for me, and I like KDE+Plasma.
I'll keep saying this ; Mint would be better served if the team dropped the Ubuntu base and solely focused on the Debian pool. I could probably see myself either going Debian or LMDE should something happen to Slackware, then my other choice would be a BSD .
MX Linux paid to be at the top of distrowatch all these years, right? Most people are better off just learning Arch for customization and tinkering nowadays. Then real Linux tweakers can eventually hop to Nix or Guix
