This design is what got me into gunpla. I remember seeing the MG ver in a local toy store when I was a kid and thought "that looks awesome". The red frame never really sticks with me, but the blue frame, the greatsword, the minigun, the orange bladed bits, always looked cool to me.
I'm not sure if i'll be around for much longer, but i want to say that even tho i could not have many gunpla that i always wanted like the PG Exia or MGEX Strike Freedom or Dynames and Virtue, or the Turn Red and Red Dragon or any Metal Build Astrays... i get carried away when i think about gunpla, what i want to say is i enjoyed every minute of your videos, and they have brought me joy and some satisfaction by watching how much love you have for this hobby, and for that i thank you and hope you will always have a good and happy life to continue enjoying Gundams.
So your 20? Brace yourself, it gets so much worse. That feeling. That means I was 25 when you were born. I'm older than Gundam IP itself. Not by much. Feel your pain. Trust me. I am newer to gunpla but already I want to build a PG Red Astray I definitely plan on MG of both. If and when I get good enough on my model building skills again I'll definitely kitbash and mod my own color Astray.
I built the blue frame second L and it definitely shows it's age. It's not bad, just tightening some joints, but don't expect a good out of box build. Paint the joints.
@@mr.mooseman8558 Plus I do the joints with metallic paints to enhance the mechanical details. I feel that it both improves the look and the overall tightness of the joints.
I’ve built the MG version of this kit and I have this HG kit in my backlog. I remember seeing in an anime episode of this unit using the gatling while it was in flight mode, shooting at his enemies behind him. I thought that that was really cool.
Pg astray is a great kit, but be careful not to lose the pin for the sword. It comes with its own ieb light in the head, 3 metal parts in the croch, and the leg. The sword holding arm will tend to fall off. The beam sabers will fall off if you mess with it too much. But I still love the pg astray.
I remember always seeing this kit on every hobby store on display back then when it first released, it so popular it always sold out whenever I want to buy it
Found the HGCE 1/144 Gundam Astray Blue Frame 2nd L to be a mixed bag. Without the Tactical arms, the kit is quite posable. The stickers don't do this justice and IMO needs to be repainted. The armor plate that attached to the back of the knee will tend to loosen later and jam the bending of the leg. My kit's right-arm later broke up due to stress probably due to holding the tactical arms. Also the backpack that holds the tactical arms is composed of 2 arms, one going to the striker pack hole and another to the lower waist which later got a lot of stress marks and broke eventually. This is probably the heaviest HG sword as the one from the 00 7Swords/g was quite light. The side skirt has a polycap ball joint attachment to the hip without a proper lock causing it to pop-off frequently. The hand cover will also wear out and quickly pop-off eventually due to the weight of the tactical arms. The armor schneider are quite good detailed wise but the orange peg mounting it to the legs will tend to pop-off. Best to apply plastic cement on it. The foot mounted armor schneider was quite a nice touch. The tactical arms in sword mode, aside using the stand is also mountable hoisted behind the head, resting on the backpack mount/shoulder while the right arm supports it. Actually bought the SEED Blue Frame kit to try to convert it to the 2nd G (base form) and was horrified to find out that they have different molding (the arms are a lot thicker with the old kit and I can't mount the classic backpack to the 2nd L).
Not sure if you knew this, but the zeonic sword is based on the blue-frame's sword, it also explains why that kit and Nu Zeon Gundam contains the knives
the five original Astrays seem to have their own respective themes: Red Frame = Samurai, Blue Frame = Knight, Gold Frame = Vampire, Green Frame = Martial Artist, Mirage Frame = Beast(?).
Gold frame for me is like fallen angel gold frame lose the arm, and become amatsu Mina (black winged MS).... And then to Hana.... And then to Amaterasu(white winged sun god like)
Note that the Zeonic sword is based on the Tactical arms of this Astray, but it's quite different. Kinda wish they would release the original Tactical arms for customs.
i remember building this kit not long after it came out, I misread the instructions and broke the knee joint in one of the legs. It's still in a box somewhere, maybe I should have another look at it.
Currently building this for a kitbash, and before I’ve even taken all of it off the runners to put it together, I can already tell that it satisfies my Astray itch. Looking at it side by side with my astray red kai MG just really shows me how good HGs can actually be sometimes. I can’t deny it will be a shame to mod the parts for what I’ll be doing with this bad boy. My main gripe is that the tactical arms can’t do the dual arm blade thing like I was hoping.
I have the MG (... although I have a small doubt it's a very high-end bootleg). I was astonished at the time although it lacked a bit of strength/sturdiness. You should try it once you have the occasion. Maybe a compared review would be interesting. Also another suggestion: however difficult it is, when reviewing a "vintage" (or almost) kit, it'd be interesting to also get your ranking relative to its age. I feel it was a solid gold if not more at the time of release.
The Red Astray was my first MG kit ever and to this day is my favorite kit out of all the ones I've had. The stability and joint strength issues with the Blue made it such a frustrating disappointment to me that it wound up getting chucked in a drawer and forgotten for a decade.
@@jonathanparker8867 I understand. Now that I know better I'm considering strengthening them. I'd like to have the MG or PG Red Frame (and refrained a few years ago from buying the P Bandai Gold Frame... Why? Why?) But first I need to reduce my backlog and make some space :D.
@@jonathanparker8867 I'm not as much into the late forms like the Red Dragon or most of all the Gold Amatsu Mina though. I feel like it distracts from the beauty of the astray frame itself (well the Gold Amatsu is beautiful... But in another way, much more Blitz MK2 like)
@Aptarus Original Recipe is the best, but a stock 1/100 red is hard to find nowadays. At least with the Sengoku you actually get to use the phrase "And then his shoulder unhinged and punched me in the face"
@@jonathanparker8867 I live 10 minutes away from a gunpla shop that "relatively regularly" restocks the PG and sometimes gets the original or versions close enough where you can build it. Import pricea+margin+sometimes P-Bandai tax though... But I can afford it (now).
You know what needs a NEW High Grade from Seed/CE Timeline? All the other G Project suits like the Buster and Aegis but also their variants seen in Stargazer like the Strike Noir and Blu Duel
Dang I remember I built this kit like 8 years ago, I thought it looked cool and was a figure, only to find out it was model kit, safe to say I loved it and it made me addicted to gunpla.
Once again hoping you will build and review the HeMoXian/ NonZero studios "Legion of Thor" kit and InEra+ Thunderbolt, been a while since you've reviewed a "third party" kit and i think you will love them.
Huh, why did I only now realized that the Zeonic Sword from ReRise is basically a take on Blue Frame's Tactical Arms? Must be the lack of backpack mode.
So question. . .I want a Red/Blue/Green/Gold/Any Color Frame.... Because I don't have one of any yet. But which one is "best"? Hg, Mg, Rg. Doesn't matter to me. Whats the best one out there?

I think the blue frame is really just limited by the design. The red frame with flight pack has better ankles, less bulky shoulders, and overall has better range than the Moon Gundam that most ppl considered the pinnacle of HG.
