One of the coolest things I noticed immediately about this interview: Petrucci is fully engaged in talking directly with Ola. Amazing how much just turning your full attention to who you are talking to says about someone.
For years I refused to listen to dream theatre or just John in general. I realized a few years back, it’s just cuz I was jealous. Once I exorcised the green demon, I love his stuff. Can’t get enough of it. It’s both amazing and scary how projecting insecurities can effect shit.
JP is absolutely humble. To hear the guy talk so casually about having to be on top of his huge repertoire of solos and creating new solos .... I mean, for us fans out there, the guy is close to a god, a legend, thanks to his incredible catalogue of work. He's definitely one of my heroes.
"you're the reason progressive metal is as big as it is today"...huge compliment and it's funny how genuine John's reaction is-- he's a freeking legend. It's wild how humble he is. Awesome interview!
Man, I even almost teared up when John asked him to be a guest instructor. And even if ola was nervous about teaching guitar he could just do a class on gear. He's a wizard when it comes to that stuff.
For some reason i started singing The silent man during the interview. The first metal cd i bought back in 2001 was Metropolis pt2. My cousin told me to, I went back home and put it on my portable cd player. I was very nervous, didnt know what to expect. And then... click click "Safe in the light that sourounds me.. free of the fear and the pain.." The journey was on ❤️
I took my son to a G3 concert in Minneapolis a few years ago, when it was John, Phil Collen, and Joe Satriani. The entire show was great, which was convenient since it was my son's second concert experience. When John played his new "Happy Song" off Terminal Velocity, my son's ears perked up, his whole demeanor changed, and he really got into it. He went from "this is cool" to "OMG THIS SONG IS AMAZING". Thank you, John. Not only for the awesome music (Falling Into Infinity is still my favorite album of yours), but also for allowing me to witness the moment my son got turned onto rock music.
I’m so happy for you, Ola, you really deserve it. Just like some of the comments down below, I actually teared up myself when I watched the way that you looked when John told you what a great player you are. What an honor. It’s not every day that you get told these things from one of your guitar inspirations. You deserve it Ola. Your one of the most sincere, humble and talented guys in the metal world that I know.
After 30 min later, I realized Petrucci not just incredible musician same time he is successful businessman. Dream Theater concerts and merchs selling great, his guitars selling great, other stuffs are selling great and he is really rich. It's great that he's making good money in a non-mainstream music genre and being satisfied with his art as an artist.
What a nice interview! Man, those summers in the late 90s sweating the exercises on Rock Discipline or attempting to learn Erotomania, Metropolis, etc. are some of my fondest memories ❤
I’ve always admired your work ethics and John Petrucci is also one of the reasons why I play guitar. Seeing you get the acknowledgement you deserve by him asking you to be an instructor almost made me cry of pride for your behalf. You are an inspiring and amazing person, and I’m a proud Solar player because of that! As someone already wrote, you got this! You have more to offer than you know! Keep up the good work Buddy! 🤘And great episode too!
Absolutely love John Petrucci 🤘☠️🤘. Holy sh*t balls Petrucci invited Ola to his camp as a instructor... I would have passed out, wake up crying of joy. 😅
Shit man....i'm so pleased seeing John doing so well and winning Grammys and shit, even if I don't listen to their latest music anymore. DT was the pinnacle of musicianship for me during my late teen years, as it was for so many metalhead entering to prog for the first time. And he has the definite best instructional video in the 90's, Rock Disciplie inspired so many players, he even has stretching exercises on it. LEGEND
Some say, "Never meet your heroes." Then John Petrucci comes along and blows that theory completely out of orbit. I couldn't be any happier for you, Ola. Yes, I'm a simping drummer but dude, it's so heartwarming to see where your hard work has taken you, and what other adventures and highlights are still to come. Good on you, mate. I'm looking forward to seeing a video blog of your adventures as an instructor at Guitar Universe. Get 'em!
Genuinely had such a huge grin on my face when Ola got invited to be an instructor for Petrucci's camp...it was such a wholesome moment and I loved seeing Ola have a mini fan girl freakout that he got acknowledged by his guitar idol :) Time stamp is 35:22
I shed a tear of happiness for you when he asked you to teach (you better do it!), can't imagine what that moment felt like, your mind must have been completely blown. Great interview, congrats!
Holy smokes!!! I would have sh*t my pants. I've been to the Dream theater concert in germany this week and i'm still nervous, by just seeing him a few steps in front of me. And it was my fourth time. Man....John is like Jesus to me! John, if you read this: I LOVE YOU MAN! I really do and don't feel bad about it. I stopped countig how often i dreamed about meeting you. The way you play just hits me right in the heart. I'm a fan since the early Majesty days and the one thing that never changed was the way how you connect your soul with the instrument. And i feel every little note. Thank you Mr. Petrucci for everything, even if you don't know me or us. I think i can speak for many when i say: May you live forever!
Oh my god, Ola, this was incredible! I echo the sentiments of many others when I say that I was so thrilled for you when John invited you to the camp. You deserve it!
35:19 Those moments bringts tears to my eyes. Anyone who puts so much heart and skill into something doesn't need to be shy. Of course, Ola also attracts new customers to Guitar Universe, but JB certainly wouldn't ask if he didn't think you could do it. And the economic aspect will certainly not be the deciding factor. Ola, you can do it!

I feel totally and fairly represented by Ola. This is the interview we've all been waiting for, my guitar hero interviewing our guitar hero. No pun intended, but it was a " Once in a lifetime" experience! So proud of you Ola! Cheers from Mexico 🇲🇽
Oh... so touching! John remains such a simple and open person despite his great success. I think only a big fan would be able to do such an interview. Ola Thank you for a great job!
Petrucci teaches us that nothing in life is free. He practiced a lot, worked very hard, day after day, with rigor, to be there today. It also teaches us that physical fitness is essential if you want to extend your career beyond 50 years. This kind of education is worth gold. Thanks John.
That moment when John asked you to come as an instructor was so genuine and wholesome. I love this channel and community. Very nice, passionate but also decent and respectful people. You deserve it!
Awesome interview. It's great to have someone interview John who is their own idol! You asked questions that no kne else ever asks, but that we've all been wondering about. Thank you to John Petrucci for spending that hour with you. So amazing. And such a great honor for you to join his guitar universe as an instructor. Amazing!
What a great interview Ola! And what a nice guy John! You must definitely be teacher on the camp, every guitar player has different talents, and you got different skills than others, you connect to people in so many ways. So happy for you dude, you really deserve all the best! Regards from Spain!
Ola, thank you for sharing this interview. Petrucci has a similar meaning to me as he has to you, he's the reason I decided to pursuit this guitar life. I am so happy for you, for sitting there with John, sharing stories and everything, and then being invited to be an instructor at Guitar Universe. You deserve all the amazing things you have conquered. This is the best Coffee With Ola you've ever did
The old Petrucci forum days were special! There was so much knowledge floating around back then. Misha Mansoor, Marshall Harrison, Tom Quayle... Honestly, I've probably forgotten more names that were on there than I remember. There was an amazing Canadian guitarist on there as well, and I can't recall his name but I have his albums on an old computer. I miss those days.
Chris Feener, I suspect it would have been. Definitely worth checking more of his stuff out from after those years. I think Rick Graham was on there as well. Martin Miller, Quayle, Harrison, Mansoor, Andy Wood, Andy James, Chris Brooks, Carl Roa. Good times!
@@MichaelAE yep, remember those days fondly! Was also on the MP forums and the JCF (Jackson Charvel) forum. They were my home on the internet as a teenager learning guitar, and trying to learn and make prog metal and other types of music that no one around me in real life had any interest in or even laughed at. As a teenager that wanted to be a musician those were really lonely days, with barely any friends I could bond with or make a band with, but the JP forum allowed me to connect to likeminded people. Exchanging tips, tipping each other on cool techniques, new music (discovered lots of great prog there), posting vids of your playing to get feedback... And, of course, JP himself gave me inspiration to keep trying and persevering. There is also a whole subset of musical history in that forum that could have been studied if the data was still available: some of the origins of modern djent, multiple of the current biggest players and bands when they were still kids... Hell, even the history of the Meme as a new type of thing. Those early rock discipline JP psycho parodies were like some of the earliest memes I can remember that had such a broad impact. Unfortunately, I put down my guitar for a long while a few years later because life threw me a couple of curve balls, and I've never stopped wondering "what if..." Maybe my journey into music might have taken me in the same direction as Ola, Tobin and the others.... So, here's another guy who was learning Erotomania when he was a young teenager, who has JP as his main inspiration and being really happy to see Ola get this opportunity, and to see JP has remained such a balanced, grounded person. What a class act, and the best counterexample to the old saying "never meet your heroes." Anyways, apologies for the rambling. This really brought back a lot of memories. Thanks for the interview, Ola, I lived through you vicariously for an hour.
Your nervousness at the beginning, John Petrucci being so down to earth, honest and interested in the discussion you were having and just the whole vibe: it's all so genuine, has very few if any of the sometimes awkward trappings of an actual interview and is a pleasure to watch. Huge congratulations on being invited as an instructor! Whether you do it or not, I think you have a lot to offer in that realm not just as a player, but also as someone who has made so many videos testing gear and dialing in tone and explaining the process, which is such a huge part of playing guitar in general. Your videos have helped me a lot in (finally) dialing in a setup and developing tone settings that make me excited to play and I'm sure that's the case for tons of other of your viewers as well.
Whenever I feel bad, I return to this video. Seing Ola so moved and happy immediately makes me happy too! This is my feel good video, as weird as it may sound!
One of the best JP interviews! JP had such a similar impact on so many of us and seeing that mirrored in you really brought out that personal aspect! Now, go join the universe!
Awesome interview! It’s always a pleasure to hear from John, and you asked him just about everything I would have lol! Congrats on the invite! I had the same reaction when I heard the new recording of Gemini on Terminal Velocity! I loved it ever since I first saw Rock Discipline, and I also had the mp3 of the original back in the day. I was kind out of bummed out that he didn’t record it for Suspended Animation, but the wait was definitely worth it. Loved that you brought up the Petrucci forum too! Along with the Megadeth forum (Total Anarchy!) and Harmony Central, that was my go to message board back in the day.
I hope you accept his offer to be an instructor. A lot of us fans of you and your channel, it is gratifying, to see one of our own, so to speak, get to the level you are now, and to be recognized by an esteemed musician as J.P., speaks to your accomplishments and achievements.
And then... click click "Safe in the light that sourounds me.. free of the fear and the pain.." The journey was on ❤️
this man is a guitar-god yet he is just so down to earth basically. I LOVE JP! ❣❤
I cant imagine someone not loving John... so friendly and open-hearted
The episode we all were waiting for. JP IS A MONSTER GUITAR PLAYER
I don’t play metal, don’t listen to metal but man how much respect I have for you guys and what y’all do for the guitar community.
You don’t have to be nervous, Ola. You and John sounds like old friends having a coffee and talking like you always do when you meet. This is ace.
I couldn’t be happier for you Ola. That was pure genuine joy when John asked you to come
I don't know how you hold the tears when JP invited you to be an instructor! What a class act, both of you!
John is genuinely one of the best people. Loves music and his craft. Would love to meet him someday.
Same!
Ola Englund's channel attracts me more than Netflix etc.
THAT'S the Fucking TRUTH !!!!! 😄🤘
@@mikegallagher2732 🤘😉👍
Wow! Congratulations, Ola! You’re the man. Petrucci said so! 💪🏻
John is the best musician ever walked the earth. I love him from the bottom of my heart.
😅
That's your hero right there man. 5 feet away. I got sorta teary
Petrucci did so much for the scene! He deserves the success with his signature lables and DT so much.
Great interview!
LEGEND
So glad that Mr Petrucci is such a nice a genuine guy. He has been a hero of mine since I was a teenager.
Some say, "Never meet your heroes."
Then John Petrucci comes along and blows that theory completely out of orbit.
Get 'em!
What an honor to be asked that by the man himself! Congrats Ola. Well deserved!!
I've met John twice. This is him. Just super nice, open, humble. Great dude.
What a guy! Such a legend, so humble.. You GOTTA do that that guitar camp, Ola!! DO IT! Don't let John down!
Genuinely had such a huge grin on my face when Ola got invited to be an instructor for Petrucci's camp...it was such a wholesome moment and I loved seeing Ola have a mini fan girl freakout that he got acknowledged by his guitar idol :)
Time stamp is 35:22
"because of you, I play guitar" You don't know how I empathise with that sentence
I shed a tear of happiness for you when he asked you to teach (you better do it!), can't imagine what that moment felt like, your mind must have been completely blown. Great interview, congrats!
John is such a kind and humble person. I have so much respect and admiration for him. What a stand up guy!
Monster player. Always admired how precise his playing is. Down to mathematical detail. Petrucci is a guitar god
For me, JP is the best guitarist ever. Period. Congrats, Ola. You deserved it!
John Petrucci is so really KIND. Ola you did a great job there!✨ Congrats!
John is a absolute legend. Met him once, really nice guy.
Ola and John let's go... While I don't listen to Dream Theatre just a few songs here and there... love his musicianship
Damn, what an honour from John himself!!! Well done Ola! You deserve this! Have fun man!
This is the most beautiful interview ever Ola, the moment that JP asked to be an instructor i kinda choked and got a teary eye like a really wholesome moment. We feel really proud of you Ola.
It was fun watching Ola balance between keeping his composure and totally geeking out. Great job.
John is an absolutely amazing person. Thank you Ola for the great interview.
Amazing!
John is the Progfather for all of us ❤️🤘
🤘
Johns posture is unmatched
What a great interview Ola! And what a nice guy John! You must definitely be teacher on the camp, every guitar player has different talents, and you got different skills than others, you connect to people in so many ways. So happy for you dude, you really deserve all the best! Regards from Spain!
My Guitar Hero, Om John!!
What a class act, and the best counterexample to the old saying "never meet your heroes."
Anyways, apologies for the rambling.
I think Ola & John are such wholesome dudes. Love them both.
Ola, PLEASE take John up on his offer to be an instructor. That would be incredible. You deserve it!
What a down to earth guy John is! Amazing interview! Don't sell yourself short Ola. You deserve the invite he gave you!
I hope you accept his offer to be an instructor. A lot of us fans of you and your channel, it is gratifying, to see one of our own, so to speak, get to the level you are now, and to be recognized by an esteemed musician as J.P., speaks to your accomplishments and achievements. Do it ola, be an instructerer
John is such a nice guy
Love watching this so much. JP one of my favourite people in the world, let alone a guitarist or musician.
I have so much respect for these two men. What a fantastic interview.
Umbasa! JP is a legend indeed, a gentle giant and is wearing the brooks addiction walker 2 black shoe in case anyone is interested! Ola with the sweet chucks converse I believe!
Ola officialy made it to a whole new level, when Petrucci talked about his camp I was thinking come on Ola could be an instructor there and a minute later, there he goes, Ola seemed high on life after that and as a longtime viewer even I felt extremely happy. This interview is the best thing on RUclips right now.
Ola. And again. You are THE MAN!!! Thanks for this interview!!!
Amazing Ola! You have accomplished so much in your life! Be proud my dude! You made it!
The definition of "star-struck" and it's adorable to see!
Wow , incredible how humble John Petrucci is , just how he sits and gives Ola his full attention .
Very interesting interview .
Good work !!
One of the most incredible Guitar player on the world, and one of my Favourite. Thank you John! Your riff's so legendary.
Fantastic interview Ola🙂 Thank's !
It’s actually really cool Ola. You can tell your nervous but you are at your most comfortable that I’ve seen with this interview. He’s your hero so that alone is beyond nerve racking as an interviewer. Hell, I’m nervous for you and I’m just a listener/fan. Thanks again for all you do man. You are an absolute beast! And thanks to John for being an influence to you. Because of that we have Coffee w/ Ola. GREAT interview!!!
would love to see coffee with John Myung!
