HI MICK real grass always sounds better than fake they have gotten much better at making the fake stuff really good it's not like back in the old day where the fake stuff was crap but it still does not have the FEEL of the real thing.
This is my favorite show, not just on RUclips, but anywhere. I want to see a show that explores running power. Daisy chaining vs dedicated power and how the tone can be effected.
I’ll tell you why I love this episode so much: I own less than 10 pedals, only recently bought an isolated power supply, and I buy most of my stuff used on Reverb. This was just like my own life! So relatable. You guys should do stuff like this more often. But even if you don’t, keep it up! Love the show.
The Eleclady sounds brings Gilmour to mind (naturally). I know this has been done by others, but... Would it be too much to ask for a Gilmour-oriented episode? One pedal brand I'm dying to see you guys discuss is Buffalo FX, their Evolution pedal in particular.
Gotta have an old CE-2 at the end of the FX chain. Going to just one of the HiWatt heads. As I understand it, one of the delays and one (he has two in his live rig) CE-2 just go to one Hi-Watt, then ofc he has his Leslie
Watched this years ago. I'm putting a mini pedal board together, so today I watched it again, now with the specific interest in the e-lady that I just bought used. Realized I have to get the Trelicopter. I love how TPS tweak their pedals while playing to get the effect to work with the over all sound.
I have an EHX Crayon, and its killer for getting extra grain, or aggression out of another gain source (amp or pedal). Its a hidden Metal beast, I dont know why more metal guys dont use them over TS pedals. You can dial far more bass out (great for low tunings) and if you amp pre does not quite do metal by itself, it with thrust it into metal territory (usually a slight to large bass cut slight treble boost) with gain on next to nothing (8 oclock) volume anywhere from 12 oclock to full, and it will make your amp grittier and boost and add compression . To me it can be used like a "turbo" tube screamer when you need to add more punch and grit as well as compression. On amps that have hi gain but are maybe a little smooth or sweet sounding (maybe more blue rock oriented) you can make them snarl with the Crayon, and focus the bass/low end far better than any tube screamer. It does not have much more gain passed 12 oclock and most of the bite i find is under 9 oclock gain, but its amazing. then there are the usual uses people use them for lool
@@martinpadel7775 The way I use this pedal for metal is to stack into something RAT or OCD based that is maybe quite thick and a little too woolly usually, and it adds some edge , definition and tone shaping As a Core tone I dont think it works for Metal even when boosted, but using it as a boost through a more "muffled" sound, its brilliant. For metal I love it in front of a TRex Mudhoney2, it really enhances the grit and articulation , but you can set up the bass to be tight and modern or bigger and doomy,, I love it. Not sure if I answered your question
Dan to your question at 45:12 the toneprint app will only allow you to download pre-set tones, but (and this is where i spend countless hours of fun!) you can also download for free the tone print editor (i have it on my mac but there is also an iPad version which i haven't used yet). I have a sub n up so as well as having infinite control over those octave tones (and edit the presets / artists versions, etc) you can also add Corona Chrous, Voltex Flanger and / or shaker vibrato and have ability to edit how those tones are applied too. You can only add it to the wet signal (which makes sense or they'd only need to make these as a single pedal) but it does give you the ability to add those modulation sounds. So whilst you can't dial in your pedal to be a completely different pedal you can do a ton more than what the toneprint app can.........
Revelation: modulation before drive! Thanks guys, don’t know why I’ve never tried this before but I just put my small stone before my drive pedals and can see me using it so much more now!
With that kind of money it's easy to end up with only two-three pedals! ;) Let me say, Moog MF-104M Super Delay and a Klon Centaur and maybe with a WV MK2 as well. I would spend it like that, yey ;)
I will check out, thanks. +Tomson kolson There are alternatives to KCentaur, there are proofs for that... :) I'd change Moog's delay for Empress Superdelay, awe-some.
They are, absolutely! I do have a RYRA Klone pedal myself, and it's great. But my idea within Your idea was, if I had 3500 quids to spend on pedals, I would like to buy those "mythical" units and see if they are really worth the price. Probably not, hehe.
I don't know if a Butler tube driver counts as mythical, but it's a pricy boutique and it's losing badly to a Fulltone OCD for something like 1/4th the price. I'll bend it to my will/sell it.
Totally with Dan and the flanger being the only modulation pedal. It can fake a chorus, phaser and rotary decently well. Digging Mick's choice in cats, pretty sure that's a reissue cat but still good none the less.
Got to second Mick's comment that using the Generator, and The Gig Rig modular power system- it truly is a revelation! Best pedal power available- hands down! Thanks guys.
Wow. EHX, Maxon / Ibanez, TC Electronic & Mooer - all got 2 each, in the challenge. ( I Love the Mooer E-Lady Flanger ). Dan, I also Re-Watched - your 2 Pedalboard Builds for Ed O'Brien ( from Radiohead ) and they were Packed with So Much Useful Information. Phenomenal Videos. I could watch them . . . over & over.
Just had an idea for the name-drop horn!! How about mounting it on a short mic-stand? The mic clip might be close to the diameter of the horn neck. Just have it pointed down and pump when needed!
Great video. For years, I got by with an Ibanez SD-9 Sonic Distortion, a Boss GE-7 EQ and a DOD FX65 Stereo Chorus. I relied on the amp to supply the reverb.
Mick should totally bring Boy to the pedal shed and see what combinations he likes pedal-wise! "That Cat Pedal Show....." "Oh look Dan! He Jumped on your vintage Mistress...Dan?! DAN!!! :)"
This was fantastic!!!! WOW! Getting a one-one consult about pedalboards from the experts!!! Thanks Lads! Good advice! I like Mick's chain better FWIW. Both are great!
That Pedal Show - my vote for Danelectro is the Sitar Swami. It's the kind of pedal that you'll find no use for unless you need exactly what it does. If, however, you need exactly what it does, then nothing else will work. I had in my life exactly one such occasion and it was amazing.
I think one of the coolest things here, revisiting 8 months later is that the enjoyment of and enthusiasm for these (less expensive) pedals is real and discernible. No need to have Uber-expensive, cork-sniffery pedals to enjoy pedals and tones. Pedal love for everyone at almost any price point. That’s the thing. Still well-done guys.
Dan and Mick, I would love a show about guitars direct into a sound board for live performance. My Lead guitarist and myself(rhythm guitar + lead singer) fight with volume levels and tones all the time. We currently use guitar processors and a DI box, which we hate. But we are stuck in a SMALL venue for a cover gig. So I'm currently using a boss me-20. Which I freakin hate. But I get a great clean tone, but a crappy OD tone. Which I have learned from your show is because of PA headroom and lack of compression. I'm about to scrap my whole rig for a wampler plexi-drive plus, and some add on's, just get some tone and cut thru. My lead player uses a silver jubilee at home. I use a jcm 900 at home. But for our cover gig (American 90's alternative) we can't use. SO, post some options for the small venue/ PA sounds. Much appreciated, and also we love how one dude swangs and the other dude dials. That's how we do it too. Thanks, Doc + Stox, from Iraq. I should mention, our Cover Gig is from the Embassy in Iraq. So we can't buy just anything, we have to research on the net, test it quickly when we go home, and mule it in when we come back.
I’ve recently started using my blues driver with the level on full and drive around 9 o’clock, always on. Sounds amazing, ride the volume from clean to screaming.
Harry Emmott yeah, they just upped it to $75.99, which still isn’t bad. But unfortunately out of my budget. I was thinking about getting a TC Cinders, currently on sale for $39.99.
I leave my Maxon ad999 on all the time just for that internal buffer plus they oscillate and do the reverb thing like no other, something really special about those delays for sure
Great video! I love my Soul Food and I use a EP boost after it for lead tones. Thanks for all you guys do every week! I have learned so much and now I got my sound!
It would be so great if you guys can do a series or a video on Tips for making a pedalboard, or a mini pedalboard-making challenge, something along those lines. Also a video talking about compact and cheap but nice power supplies would be so so helpful for us! Please consider :D
+Kannon Price Erm, isn't that what this is, kind of? But we can always do more. As for cheap power supplies, we don't do them, sorry! Thanks for watching!
Great video and love the idea of having a smaller budget for creating a mini pedal board ,that will satisfy majority of players. Now what I will say, may get booed by others, would you ever consider reviewing multi effects units, like boss gt1 or zoom g3? Could you guys dial a decent sound that surprises you and the viewers?
There's no reason for the modulations, delays or reverbs on multi-effect units to be worse. Under the hood, most of them are digital. I'd like to see them have a go at the Zoom MS series, particularly the 70CDR that omits any sort of distortion.
I think the problem with multi effects demos is that it takes years to really learn how to use any multi effect properly. It's taken me 12 years to master my Boss ME-50 and I'm still trying new things with it. But I'll tell you what, no one with a pedal board has been able to top my tone yet.
I just bought a TC Electronic "The Prophet" because I wanted an affordable digital delay, and I really like it. I think when it comes to delay there are many flavors, I have a Keely Cavern's and it is cool, but I am not in love with it.
This was super fun! Thanks, guys! Have you had many requests for a similar challenge (maybe up to $500?), but for a bass board? Would love to be able to help my bass-playing friends with their rigs. Could be cool if you guys brought in a bassist, built him/her a board, and then walked us through it - kind of like how you did the slide board with Ariel. Apologies if this is redundant. Thanks and Blessings
I'm from Canada and 350 pounds is almost $600 for us! Can you do $350 in cad? That would be almost 210 pounds. A lot of my customers would not buy $600 worth of pedals. I think you'll have fun with this one lol
Great show guys,I'm running a pretty fast, medium intensity trem into a flanger and damn me if that ain't the best chorus I heard tonight.every day is a school day
as you mentioned about the soul food cutting most of the bass out, I bought a bass soul food to get a grittier bass tone for home recording, tried it on a 'normal' guitar and it sounds great to me! it reacts especially well with a pog into it with dry and octave down because it's a bass pedal by nature so it handles the lower octave perfectly!
It's great to see some of the pedals on the back wall up close. You guys should: A) Take them down more often and show them off, and B) Show us how those shelves for the pedals were made. I'd love to do something similar and get mine out of the cupboards. Love the video today too guys. It's great to see you both loving a really simple board setup.
Great Video. I recently purchased a Joyo D-Seed delay pedal and its amazing. Only cost around £50 but so versatile and sounds as good as any of the medium priced delays (£100-£150) I've tried or owned before. Up to 6 seconds of delay, analogue, digital, reverse and modulated delay sounds, 2 memory slots for different sounds, tap tempo. Also its built like a tank has soft touch foot buttons. Its crazy good. Might be worth you guys checking out.
My choices would have been VERY similar to Dan's: The Blues Driver is one of my favorite BOSS pedals ever. As far as modulation, I go back & forth between the Electric Mistress and a uni-vibe of some sort, my current fave being The Depths by Earthquaker Devices. Also, instead of the Soul Food, I'd have the Hoof fuzz, also by Earthquaker Devices. The delay is just spot-on - you can't go wrong with anything made by Maxon.
Been using a prophet for a slapback for a couple years now and love it! Thanks for showcasing that! If you want a budget alternative to the Ibanez delay, try a garagetone axle grease! Great lofi analog sound!
Fun fact, at almost the exact same time same time that EHX released the Crayon, JHS released a stripped down version of the Colour Box that was just the pre-amp section for guitars. What did JHS call this simplified (and significantly less expensive) version of the Colour Box? “Crayon,” naturally. I am not aware that JHS and EHX got in any legal tiff over this; just a funny coincidence.
Great show guys! Especially liked Dan's choice to replace his Electric Mistress, almost has that sound. I, like Dan, love that sound, but it's been cost prohibitive. Dan, if you had to pick an everyday replacement for the Electric Mistress, and you could pick anything, what would you choose to get that sound?
After revisiting this episode I decided to price a hypothetical $350 board, and it would consist of a Boss SD1, Proco Rat, Boss CE5 and a Mini Flashback. If you look you can find those four pedals new and leave enough money for a 1spot, patch cables, velcro and a piece of wood to stick them on. I never tried the Rat but videos I've watched make it seem like a great pedal. I do have the CE5 and Mini Flashback and those are excellent. It's nice to go back and watch these old episodes occasionally. It never gets old!
The Keeley modded Ibanez AD-9 is terrific. I love this episode, by the way. I just set a pedalboard for one of my mates that didn't have a budget for the higher end gear. We shopped and spent approximately $300 for two CMOT drives, Highwire phaser, Rocktron vibe and a DD-2. All kinds of goodness for about the price of a D&M drive, i'm just saying...
I have a hunch Corona chorus is not going to be this year's top seller
Haha:)

Booooooooooooo. ;-)
Keep your views to yourself next time , enough fucking crazies on here already! !
I literally want all of those drive pedals! ❤
No fuzz? What? WHAT?! Noooo!
I just bought a TC Electronic "The Prophet" because I wanted an affordable digital delay, and I really like it. I think when it comes to delay there are many flavors, I have a Keely Cavern's and it is cool, but I am not in love with it.
Maxon is the company Ibanez contracted to make the original tubescreamer , maxon stuff is literally the best Japanese pedal maker bar none
Really love seeing you guys get some great sounds with stuff I might actually be able to buy. Great Episode!
+Dan Hodson We are sooooo doing this. Thanks for the suggestion Dan!
That Pedal Show Wow! Sweet!
stoked for this!
I love these long videos! They get me through the workday!
I'm from Canada and 350 pounds is almost $600 for us! Can you do $350 in cad? That would be almost 210 pounds. A lot of my customers would not buy $600 worth of pedals. I think you'll have fun with this one lol
Great show guys,I'm running a pretty fast, medium intensity trem into a flanger and damn me if that ain't the best chorus I heard tonight.every day is a school day
Cat's the star! :)
as you mentioned about the soul food cutting most of the bass out, I bought a bass soul food to get a grittier bass tone for home recording, tried it on a 'normal' guitar and it sounds great to me! it reacts especially well with a pog into it with dry and octave down because it's a bass pedal by nature so it handles the lower octave perfectly!
Great idea!
I use a DOD LookingGlass in the same way as the BD-2 is used here (people sleeping on that pedal, one of the best OD's ever made, yet overlooked)
Hope to see a really expensive version of this!
+Gibby SG unsure we can make that happen ;)
I use A Crayon for Blues/Rock rhythm, and I boost is with the Soul Food for solos and feedback. It's perfect through a clean amp :D
Hey Mick, I was impressed with your pedal board build but Boy looked like he couldn't care less. The grass did look like a nice bed for him though
+Chris Hepburn He hates cameras. If there was no camera, he'd have been 'helping' me to the point of distraction. Lovely chap he is!
That Pedal Show Oh, he's camera shy, that makes sense. Yes, he does look like a lovely chap!
It's great to see some of the pedals on the back wall up close. You guys should:
A) Take them down more often and show them off, and
B) Show us how those shelves for the pedals were made. I'd love to do something similar and get mine out of the cupboards.
Love the video today too guys. It's great to see you both loving a really simple board setup.
Dan made a video on how to make the shelves. Look for "That Pedal Shelf" and you should find it.

Brilliant, I'll check it out. thanks!
I'm thinking, screw tolex. Amp covered head to cab in Homebase fake grass... awesome
+neuk01642 YES!
neuk01642 Saw a Smart car grassed up. it wasn't pretty.
There's an innocent smoothie van that drives around here covered in the stuff.
+Daniel Horne interesting, will check it out :)
Jeezy peeps, I'm binge watching TPS like it's the next GOT or Breaking Bad.
Hello Boy!!!!
+Caleb Paden Meeooowww!
That Pedal Show Cat not very happy, hence wagging tail
Richard Huckle One of my cats wags his tail when he's happy.
Rabbs 77 same. My cat never stops wagging her tail.
350£ converts to 454.46 dollars. I am impressed that you were able to get so much out of your self imposed budget. i love your channel. \m/ Rock on!
+DimeBDare Thank you DBD!
got stung for the grass. lol
Been using a prophet for a slapback for a couple years now and love it! Thanks for showcasing that! If you want a budget alternative to the Ibanez delay, try a garagetone axle grease! Great lofi analog sound!
Mick: "Definitely getting into Colour Box territory there."
Me: *Wonders whether crayons might be found inside a Colour Box*
I realize it would have been against the rules, but would have been pretty funny if dans board was just a ce-1 😂
+MrBingping It was discussed....
Who has the perfect Telecaster Dan or Pete? Will we ever find out? Can they even be in the same room at the same time? I think we need answers!!
+Bigup Bebop Hahaha!!! There's no such thing. But yes, perhaps this should happen. ;0)
My home board:
MXR Dynacomp £76
EHX Crayon £59
Boss DS1 £51
Boss Tremolo £77
Marshall Echohead £60
£283
Brilliant. Now it's time for that build a pedal challenge!!
I'm surprised there's no compression there.
You should do a Boss DD delay pedal shoot out with all the different versions of DD Delays from DD-2 up to the DD-500!!
