18:08 The etymology of the word "Gibberish" is actually really fun and interesting too! Romani/Gypsy people in the UK always faced prejudice and hatred, mainly because they looked different to everyone else and lived life differently. People had all sorts of stereotypes about them, one of them being that the language that they speak (Angloromani, often the only other language some English people would hear in their entire lives besides English) is pure nonsense. Since "jib" is Romani for "language"/"tongue", the Romani themselves often simply referred to their language as "Jib", which amongst the Brits came to be synonymous with "nonsense", i.e. "they're speaking jib" or "they're speaking Gibberish" meaning they're speaking nonsense. So yeah, this word that's completely innocent in the modern day and has no real synonym to its modern meaning is actually rooted in xenophobic racism! Etymology is fun

Not an explaination but I think it's also worth pointing out how weird it is that Gate has now become a suffix to add onto the end of any scandal. Despite it originally coming for Watergate which was just the name of a place the scandal occured.

Love your stuff. This video def. put a smile on my face cuz I love etymology too. I'm a Gen X'er who relatively recently got into gaming, because I've apparently been living under a rock my entire life, and I kept hearing millenials and gen z'ers use "poggers." Took me a bit to figure out what it meant. I really liked this video explaining the origin of the word. Ironically, I actually initially thought that it had something to do with pogs, which was one of my favorite games in the early 90's. I was terrible at the game too. I just liked collecting them. Like baseball cards, but less cool, cuz I'm a nerd. But I digress. I was corrected and was told it was short for "play of the game." Kind of glad that my initial guess was correct in the first place. Somehow it makes me feel a little less old? Or maybe more old? I dunno. I have some weird feels about this. I need to go reevaluate my life now....

I kept waiting for him to end one of the where did it come from rhetoric questions with “where did it go, Cotton Eye Joe” XD
i love how tom gets progressively more and more aggressive as the video goes on
I like that most of the suggested age rating at the start comes purely from the Surfshark ad.
I think that the deformation of the phrase Among Us is really interesting. It’s gotten to the point where you can just say ‘mog’ and people get it.
oh god
I freaking loved this. I would love to hear about more strange terminology.... I just hope this wasn't an april fools joke. I'm a bit gun shy today when it comes to things on RUclips
This video awoke something in me and now I love etymology
9:55 Tom starts shining off a "RedLetterMedia guy correcting his cohost onn star trek" kind of energy
Fun fact, I wrote a 7 page essay for my music history class on the history of the rickroll.
The fact that rick rolling is still going on to this day is just surprising most memes die within weeks yet this meme has been going on for an entire decade
We're no strangers to love
You know the rules and so do I
A full commitment's what I'm thinking of
You wouldn't get this from any other guy
I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling
Gotta make you understand
Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
We've known each other for so long
Your heart's been aching but you're too shy to say it
Inside we both know what's been going on
We know the game and we're gonna play it
And if you ask me how I'm feeling
Don't tell me you're too blind to see
Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
Never gonna give, never gonna give
(Give you up)
We've known each other for so long
Your heart's been aching but you're too shy to say it
Inside we both know what's been going on
We know the game and we're gonna play it
I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling

Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
Never gonna give you up

Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye

Roll
nice
@@jt_myth roll
It died for a while, but it's cold, dead corpse was reanimated to dance for us. It's in the post-irony revival phase of memehood.
Duck
The fact that you put this video on April Fools day but that it's predominantly accurate is funny. Also, nicely done :P
I was hoping this would be a rick roll itself
Same lol
10:06 And why not? Some guy under the bridge coming up and causing you trouble when you're trying to cross.
Thank you, Tom, for leveling me up from a fun-fact florber, to a trivia goblin.
I do really hope you make another video like this, it’s super interesting and you all make it easier to watch with the humour and editing!
Joke's on you for assuming none of us here are massive language/etymology/etc. nerds
The BEST Tom Ska videos is simply tom slowly going insane into a camera while they explore a micro interest and realise they're a depress obsessive nerd
Not an explaination but I think it's also worth pointing out how weird it is that Gate has now become a suffix to add onto the end of any scandal. Despite it originally coming for Watergate which was just the name of a place the scandal occured.
The shark.
It has legs.
It. Has. LEGS.
I feel stupid now for having used "poggers" when it's so stupid and meaningless. I love that it was a drink at some point and that's where the actual Pogs come from. Nostalgic. You should look up the etymology on that word actually. I'm pretty sure nostalgia has a weird ass etymology, if I know it right. I think it's in relation to Homer's Odyssey.
This was a great video.... then Tom Scott happened and this video has been elevated to the goatiest of british RUclips culture productions!
My two favourite channels and my two favourite Toms, I want to meet the both of you.
When Tom Scott said "I hate myself too" it broke my sorry excuse for a withered heart.
"You've watched Japanese Anime, you're a fucken weeb!" - no need to call me out for binging all of FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood over the past four days...
It was interesting Tom! One of your best videos of recent! I hope you do more videos like this, it’s awesome.
I love etymology and I enjoy knowing these things now and I love this. I also google the etymology of things out of random curiosity, especially words that seem like compound words but are often used in a context unrelated to the (potential) base words. Like handsome. It’s an actual compound word!
Nonono, I'm pretty sure you're Thomas "TomScott" Ridgewell.
I'm genuinely fascinated by etymology, I'd love to see more like this
Fingers crossed this is not a joke because I truly do love etymology 😭
I'm actually super interested in linguistics (and I wrote my master's thesis on the origins and morphology of various Fandom-related words, so that video made me really happy! And I actually got some more background to some words I already new the origins of, so 10/10!

I started this wondering how the hell I was going to give a shit and ended up watching the whole thing. Loved it, loved seeing you laugh at yourself Tom and can't wait for the next vid!
