"Yeah, no worries, I hate myself too." Best collab in the history of the universe, hands down.
Facts
Made me feel slightly sad hearing Tom Scott say that.
The best part ie they have the same name
When he actually appeared on-screen I genuinely lol'd and I haven't done that in a very long time. Thank you for that, Toms!
This made me laugh, too much.
this sponsorship gave me nightmares
I see Tom’s still trying his damndest to lose that sponsorship
Yes…yes he does…and I love it
He should become the Fireman, best way to get fired.
This one genuinely made me uncomfortable. Maybe it's just because I Watched this 5 minutes after waking up
As long as he says the talking points, he's good
But honestly it 100% makes me remember the name surfshark for quite a while, which is really all a sponsor could want. Also I just started laughing out loud while watching
I find Tom immediately starting worried that no one would watch this video because it's about words funny, that's the whole reason I clicked on it.
At this point I’m watching the videos mostly for the surfshark vpn sketches.
me either
Me to
you watch tomska?
Honestly Tomska's ads are the best marketing I've seen in ages.
Also I just realized this is after the video of him talking about how they just go with anything which means someone saw that video and went "Ha ha No."
This is how I found out that the words Troll and Trolley (American use) have the same origin
Today I learned Tomska and Tom Scott are not the same
Fun fact, I wrote a 7 page essay for my music history class on the history of the rickroll.
Man, Tom isn't pulling any punches with these SurfShark ad reads anymore
he made a video titled "surfshark please fire me" and you are suprised when he is doing stuff that could get him fired
not without any arms he isn't
@@_justincredible_ I'm not surprised because it's Surfshark, I'm surprised because it's the darkest skit of his that I've ever seen
@@swordforger3719 I think the kidnapping Surf Shark ad was a lot darker.
This is Internet Historian level
The original rickroll was actually inspired by a radio station in the 1990s where for one April fools, they promised crazy news of some crazy thing, and then just played never gonna give you up for five times in a row.
I love that you pronounced Tom Scott in such a way it sounded almost exactly like TomSka. Very funny.
I want someone to edit it to just “I’m not TomSka”. Perhaps followed by the x files theme
As soon as he said "I like etymology", I thought of Tom Scott.
@@seanm9306 no put the vsauce music in
I've been waiting for a TomSka/ Tom Scott crossover for months.
@Gioacchino Sessa Tomskaat?
I already knew where Stan came from.
Nonono, I'm pretty sure you're Thomas "TomScott" Ridgewell.
I thought rick rolls came from a guy calling into a radio station yelling "GET RICKROLLED" while playing the song
I would 100% love a series where tom just rambles about the etymology of words with questionable origins and or unconfirmed sources
While of course continuously threatening to murder us if we try to leave
@@sebastianandersson554 Serves em right, this is super interesting
Me too
So basically, chaotic tom scott
I will never be upset on getting rickrolled. I won a class election using that song as my campaign song.
I genuinely don't know if this is gonna be a real video or not at this point. Today has been making me question everything but the theme is helping me have faith here
I am thinking about dropping out of school to focus on my career as a star on RUclips. I already make a lot of money on RUclips. School bores me so much. I need more opinions and since I don't have any friends, I gotta ask you, v

I fully expected this to be a 19 minute rickroll.
lmao same
I expected the real April fools to be no Rickroll, but I was very unsure. A layered joke seemed like more his thing
Don't give him ideas
TomSka vs Tom Scott
I do really love that Tomska and Tom Scott have now technically collabed
They (technically, he was only there for like 30 seconds) already did in a Last Week
TomSka was in a Tom Scott video, look for the Lie-Detector Skeleton.
Tom Scott voiced the guy in "the perfect asdfmovie joke" too
@@thatcrystal And during a Last Month for about 5 seconds too

The shark.
It has legs.
It. Has. LEGS.
You know that feeling when someone you like is going off on a tangent telling you about this thing they really enjoy, and you're not super interested but you're happy to just sit there and listen because talking about it makes them so happy, and after a while you start to actually pay attention and realise it isn't as dull of a topic as you first thought?
Yeah, that's this.
You can even say that's Poggers.
I was caught the moment he said "etymology" but I guess people don't always hear the same words
Watching this when it's 13 hours old.
I was SOO expecting Tom to turn around on the trolling scene and go "actually, it is based on the folkloric creature, I was just trolling Elliot".
Today on TomScott and Friends...
Fun fact, the reason we use the words upper and lower case for letters (A and a) is because print shops had cases of letter stamps, with the big letters in the top(upper) case and the small letters being in the bottom(lower) case
Tom, I couldn't click off this video if I wanted to. One of my favourite things is talking to people about the things they are super interested in, even if it's weird. Especially if it's weird.
Etymology is cool and also completely bonkers - the word 'nimrod' supposedly only started meaning 'idiot' when Bugs Bunny called Elmer Fudd a Nimrod (after the biblical hunter) but no one got the joke.
This was great, if you have more please do another one of these!!
I only came here for the shurf shark ad
11:10. Does anybody actually hate this song. Like, it slaps. The vibes are impeccable. The moves….Spicy. Like, whenever I get Rick rolled…I’ll just sit through it.
I think my favorite tidbit is that Rick Astley love the meme and even got Rickrolled on numerous occasions.
I was momentarily worried Surfshark had broken Tom, then the arms came off.
Right? Then I was just uncomfortable
But also still laughing
...it terrified me ..
something is wrong with me
the video cut off
"and now a word from our sponsor"
i smiled for the second time today
someone help me
Tom: Unlike these people, I have no integrity.
Tom Scot: *Literally has a video about how nobody has complete integrity*
Maybe "poggers" has something to do with the Irish word "pog" which means "kiss", and the pogging face is sort of like a kissing face.
13:51 Tom v Tom when? My moneys on Tom…
Update:it happen
Saw the background of the thumbnail and for a second, I hoped it was a collab with Jimmy Here.
Etymology is cool, too, I guess.
13:56 ngl, i thought it was because it's a computer virus and when you're sick you say "i've got a bit of a bug" so it just worked, but your explanation sounds like something a human would do
it's funny how weeb and otaku basically switched places over the last decade
I genuinely felt bad for Tom Scott getting shouted at even though I know it's a gag.
Tom Scott is just too nice to be shouted at
And then he said "It's okay, I hate myself too..."
That part was more uncomfortable than any of the SurfShark ads, tbh
I literally screamed "NOOOOO" at the whole interaction. I've never had a visceral reaction to a TomSka video that ended in me actually yelling out in despair D:
you should also explain dank, scuffed, and salty.
11:45 - Finally, someone mentions duckroll.

I like how this testing of "The Surfshark's Lines in Advertising" is still goes on. I almost crapped my pants from that gore twist in the ad. Great job, Tomska! Keep it up! Break the Lines! Begine the mutiny!
He's gone about as far as he'll ever be able to go so now he's settled down into typical Tomska. I love it.
@@mrrandomperson3106 coming full circle, baby!
Did anyone else notice that the rickroll was an ai upscaled version?

I love that Tomska is still trying to get fired from Surfshark
Well, if enough people think that surf shark can ward off the coof because of this ad, then maybe, just maybe... they'll give Tom a raise. hehehe
Fr tho tryhards episode when
As a linguistics student and general word nerd, this is just… fantastic!
This is the sort of over-enthusiastic info-dumping I do in conversations, often to unwitting, but eventually intrigued/bored audiences. The excited explanations of quirky etymology, the sporadic tangents, the constant, somewhat sarcastic reiteration of “isn’t language great?”
This is the dorky, trivial BS that gets my brain whirring. My hyperfocus.
Thank you Tom. Please do more.
(Also, just collaborating with Tom Scott in general is great).
Tomskatt
There's something about the way Tom delivers lines to the audience like "You fucking idiot" with a completely deadpan expression that cracks me up every time!
I did a whole power point of the history of the Rick roll and other forms earlier internet memes, I’m glad I’m not the only person who does random deep dives on internet shit. Thank you Tomska, I know I’m not alone now.
I actually find etymology really cool! I recently wanted to know the etymology of mortgage, since I knew mort means death in French.
...well apparently mortgage comes from death in a sense. It means "death pledge", basically a promise that you will pay something until you die, or that you will pay with everything you have, even you life.
Anyways, words are cool!
my physics teacher had a mini game where we had to guess if the word is of Greek origin or of Latin origin.
as interesting as it was, the games never lasted long because we told him to shut up and actually help us pass our GCSEs
@@HGmolotov If you are speaking of English words, there is 30% chance they are of French origin, who is a mix of mostly Latin, gaulois, grec, Arab and really old German.
@@divicarpe1844 oh, I am aware
But he typically reserved the game for those that are of either Latin or Greek origin. If anything was french or Germanic or otherwise he would have mentioned, but when doing stuff based in maths it's usually going to be one of the two.
My father doesn’t like the word “POG” because he thinks it’s “PAWG”. And that’s poggers.
Technically, "dashboard" didn't come full circle... it just did a 180°, since it means the opposite of what it used to then
yes but the beginning of the circle was them getting shit thrown at them prior to the dashboard
@@pepsimann2038 guess op misunderstood
I find heel turn a more elegant term for a 180°
@@whyamideadindiscord3081I'm replying to a year old comment because I'm sick and bored but: Heel turn is already an established phrase, generally for when a heroic character becomes villainous. It comes from professional wrestling where a "heel" is a wrestler who plays the villain in a match or story, usually by doing things such as cheating or scheming. When a good wrestler, or a face, becomes an evil one its called a heel turn. And the reverse, a face turn, is also a thing.
wait is Tom infront of a greenscreen?
It's hilarious that you had Tom Scott in the video because I love his videos for the exact same reason, because he genuinely seems really interested in what he talks about, just like you seem to now. It mostly easy to be able to tell when someone is interested or when someone just feels like they are reading a book report they didn't want to do at the front of the class. 😄
When you said "I'm not Tom Scott" I heard it as "I'm not TomSka" and I got, I think, understandably confused.
13:20 wait, she coined the term computer bug and she's called Grace Hopper ? holy shit that's pretty funny
You’ve been tricked
why did the surfshark shark have to have legs
tom, i know you downplayed this video a lot in the intro but, oh my god, as a linguistics student who's suuuuper into etymology, oh my god, this is one of the most interesting and entertaining i've seen in a long time, jesus christ, thank you so much, good lord
SAME. I literally did a project on memes for my degree too, so this video was AWESOME. Some stuff I knew, a bunch of it I didn't (like I didn't realize 90s pogs were indeed part of the etymology of "pog", I thought it was JUST a "play of the game" reference! :O)
10:30 I always thought it came from South Park because STANground
man, glad to see you're still rockin my THICC shirt after all this time haha, the print IS getting a bit worn out but i could make u a custom one if you wanna swap it out!
(PS: if you wanna cop it for yourself, u can visit the first link in my profile header)
Man nobody actually PLAYED pogs, you just collect them in a pencil box and show em off to your friends.
18:08 The etymology of the word "Gibberish" is actually really fun and interesting too! Romani/Gypsy people in the UK always faced prejudice and hatred, mainly because they looked different to everyone else and lived life differently. People had all sorts of stereotypes about them, one of them being that the language that they speak (Angloromani, often the only other language some English people would hear in their entire lives besides English) is pure nonsense. Since "jib" is Romani for "language"/"tongue", the Romani themselves often simply referred to their language as "Jib", which amongst the Brits came to be synonymous with "nonsense", i.e. "they're speaking jib" or "they're speaking Gibberish" meaning they're speaking nonsense. So yeah, this word that's completely innocent in the modern day and has no real synonym to its modern meaning is actually rooted in xenophobic racism! Etymology is fun
Yeah, us Brits can be really horrible. We used to call them 'Irish travellers', and would leave signs on shop doors saying 'No dogs or Irish'...
To this day Irish is another word synonymous with gibberish, despite being an accepted language spoken in Ireland that has nothing to do with gibberish
Oh.
Based.
I thought it was used because gibberish sounded like gibberish.
@@RGC_animation Yeah... no
TomSka threatening to hurt people in ways they didn't even know were possible is my spirit animal.
We just love Tom creating an episode of Dont Hug Me Im Scared to advertise a product.
And then also being in an episode of Don't Hug Me I'm Scared
Etymology is great. One of my favorite memes ive stored away is just a diagram of the etymology of the phrase sussy baka, including its derivation from bussy. Language is crazy.
I like that most of the suggested age rating at the start comes purely from the Surfshark ad.
I just want to say that, not only did I not click away when this came out, I’m rewatching it 2 years later.
"You know what I'm into right now? Etymology!" - Tom
Thank you for for this. Part of my daily routine is looking up the etymology of interesting words. You're cool in my book
hes cool in every book
All topics:
Spam: 1:30 - 3:00
Meme: 4:26 - 5:20
Weebs: 5:20 - 7:55
Cookies: 7:56 - 8:30
Dashboard: 8:29 - 9:45
Trolling: 9:45 - 10:30
Stan: 10:30 - 10:55
Rickroll: 10:58 - 12:56
Bug: 12:56 - 14:17
Poggers: 14:17 - 18:00
I feel stupid now for having used "poggers" when it's so stupid and meaningless. I love that it was a drink at some point and that's where the actual Pogs come from. Nostalgic. You should look up the etymology on that word actually. I'm pretty sure nostalgia has a weird ass etymology, if I know it right. I think it's in relation to Homer's Odyssey.
Part 2 Please.
I require the origins of "Simp".
Bro I legitimately did an essay on Rickrolling and how it came about and somehow passed with the highest mark
That Surfshark VPN AD was next level!!
Tom Scott has a Spidey-sense for someone getting computer terminology and word origins wrong?? _Oh, good lord, how much does it go off!?_
But seriously, that was really cool that you mentioned him at the beginning of the video and then he cameo'd later!
well, I think the implication is at the same time, so, a bit less than otherwise
When you realise every single one of these words are a meme
I don't know should i be happy or sad that Surfshark is still sponsoring Tom
did you mean that surfshark is sponsoring tom?
@@MeNowDealWIthIt At this point, no idea lol

This video is so damn good. It’s like school presentation where you’re reading off key points on a note card while winging the rest of the presentation but it’s actually good and funny.
The fact that it took less than five minutes for Monty Python to be mentioned is really satisfying.
Not an explaination but I think it's also worth pointing out how weird it is that Gate has now become a suffix to add onto the end of any scandal. Despite it originally coming for Watergate which was just the name of a place the scandal occured.
Learning about Internet words is cool. Even the most simplest of words the most deep origins to them. Words can be cool and interesting things with so much history to them.
9:55 Tom starts shining off a "RedLetterMedia guy correcting his cohost onn star trek" kind of energy
I like finding random words, like defenestration, the act of pushing someone through a window...
You can't fool me, Tom, you first saw the poggers story in a Tumblr post a few months ago. I know this because I was there when you reblogued it!!

I think that the deformation of the phrase Among Us is really interesting. It’s gotten to the point where you can just say ‘mog’ and people get it.

That surfshark sponsor with the context of his war with surfshark elevates it to something ammusingly funny.
i love how tom gets progressively more and more aggressive as the video goes on

It's a shame about Tom Scott's tragic car accident.
