*Note: This method of muzzle threading is NOT suitable for suppressors with tight bullet clearance. We were shooting a 30 caliber projectile through a 46 caliber suppressor. That worked fine, but a smaller suppressor diameter spec could cause issues!
During a recent visit with Fred Zeglin of 4D Reamer Rentals at the Ultimate Reloader ranch, Fred and I decided that a “guest rifle build” was in order! In this video, I’ll tell the story of watching Fred re-barrel a 350 Legend Ruger American rifle to 300 AAC Blackout. What’s more: with simplified tooling.

Great video as always but would love to see more of the actual machining next time. I actually learn quite a bit watching how people go about running machines.

I took a Ruger American 300 BLK and put a Timney trigger in then mounted it in a glass-bedded Bell & Carlson stock. It shoots 0.7 MOA groups at 150 yards with Federal Fusion 150 Grain / 1900 FPS ammo -- coyote and deer hunting. Great rifle for about $1,400 with a medium priced scope ($300), rings and lens caps. It's my favorite short range rifle.
There was NOTHING wrong with the Ruger American as-it-was for hundreds less. Except, it's in an an AR-style round. I KNOW. I've got TWO AR's in 300 AAC!. (Or 30 cal "short")..Subsonic ammo suppresses well. EXCEPT, this is a HUNTING RIFLE and FOR HUNTING you need to shoot SuperSonic for humane kills.
The question should be. If all these were such great mods, WHY hasn't Ruger and other manufactors OFFERED these as options?.
AND btw, you're not BUILDING SQUAT!. You are modifying..You are CUSTOMIZING...AND with a Deadly Weapon, I'd not want to have an Anti-2A "D.A" bring that up in front of a jury...

@@robertkeller9828 - Not sure what you're trying to communicate but you sound angry that I upgraded and improved the rifle. Maybe you should find more things that are actually bad to make you angry.
Older machinists, or production guys from the old days, wouldn't think twice about a floating reamer holder.
It is the exact same concept as a floating tap or reamer holder for the old automated screw machines.
These things were cam operated and made gazillions of parts long before CNC machines came to be.

I’ve done a RARR build starting with a 6.5 Grendel model. I spun off the old barrel and used a 20” PVA 6mm ARC prefit with their barrel nut and one of Fred’s gauges. Worked like a charm, shoots sub 0.5 MOA CONSISTENTLY, and gives an extra 200-250 ft/s over a gas gun in the same chambering and barrel length. Love the American platform.
Would love to see the followup vid on how he smoothed up the feed ramp/chamber area. I have a RAP in 6.5 Grendel which shoots lights out (why is the most accurate rifle I have the cheapest??) but absolutely destroys expensive grendel brass feeding it into the chamber past the two feed ramps machined into the receiver! I was hesitant working on them as I don't want to mess with the lugs the bolt uses to lock on. Sounds like Fred has a plan and will know exactly what to do!
I had this problem and used a dremel to round the center spike between the ramps. Just take it easy and only round off enough to stop marring cases.

I bought a Ruger American Ranch in 5.56 last year, ended up replacing the barrel from Preferred Barrel Blanks and re-chambering to 20 Practical. This action was really easy to work with.

Enjoyed watching you do this. Always wanted to get a pro opinion of the anular cutter. Also, I have a Griz G0709 14x40. I have taken to using a collet chuck, live center, and steady rest when I’m working with barrels shorter than 22-23”, and working over the bed. I really like that new chuck system you have, but it’s definitely outside my price range right now

i really enjoyed this. while i dont have access to any machinery like a lathe, i hope one day i can do such work and built custom rifles. I also have been wanting to have my .308 savage precision rifles barrel threaded, and now i realize i can do it at home.

Haha... I bought an american ranch in 6.5 Grendel. MDT lss-xl gen 2 chassis. Aken SH-4 on the top. Arca rail, folding stock. Muzzle brake... I found all the tool and the component to reload in 30 minutes (took me 8 month for my 308 in Canada). It will be an epic mid range backpack gun. Changing a barrel is not for me yet (with the stupid laws it may be sooner than later...) but , hey good job guys.
I use a Ruger American with a Boyd stock and trigger job (3.5 lb) in 6.5creedmoor and I have taken over a dozen white tail from 100-200yds...that's as far as I can shoot in my hunting area. So not expensive but a better stock for a true free float and a better trigger and well under $1000 with Vortes crossfire 2-7
I have a RA .308 on a Boyd's stock & a RA 6.5 creedmoor on a magpul hunter stock I need a good decent scope for it.. that magpul stock is a precision stock supposed to be a really good stock

I think one underrated action is the HOWA, which is what I am going to use to build a “utility” rifle on the cheap

Yeah they do and its a pile of crap. Lots of bad stories out there on forums and such that I wish I had read before I bought it. Rugers answer to me was not to reload for it. Only use certain factory loads. Sucks because I have other Ruger Americans that are great rifles.

What was the actual budget for this build including base rifle, barrel, optic, and rentals?
I've ran a factory ruger ranch rifle in 300 for several years with a 1:7 twist. I have learned that this fast twist doesn't like mid weight bullets. Does great with faster 110gr bullets or around that, or slow 190gr plus bullets. Velocity and twist just don't work for mid weight bullets and it's confusing as hell why. I know speeds and twist are a big factor but this little 300 with a fast twist likes light fast bullets or heavy slow bullets. It has to be the most baffling rounds I've ever loaded for. Great information can't wait to see more!
I kept trying to make Lee 155gr to shoot accurately, tried everything with no luck than I a friend sent me some NOE 150gr and that worked better right off the bat and its not even gas checked bullet but I did also have success with some lighter bullets. Never tried heavy bullets, I do have some RCBS 165 SIL now that drop around 173gr maybe that will work, never though about trying as I always preferred faster velocity.
I love my Ruger American Ranch 7.62x39. I have an off-the-wall idea for a rifle I want to build. I would like to find one of the older rotary magazine Ruger Americans in .223 Rem and re-barrel it to .327 Federal Magnum. The rim diameter of the .327 is about .003 smaller then the .223 case head, so it should work on the bolt face with no modifications. I think this would make an awesome plinker / small game rifle. The rotary mag hopefully should allow feeding the .327s with little trouble because it holds each cartridge separately.
For subsonic pest control try 110gr plated RN for .30 Carbine over about 4.0 gr. of Bullseye. They are cheep and accurate in my unmodified version with flush mag and 1:7 barrel. Also, I found out quite by accident that Hornady 110 gr. Full Boar GMX ammo will shoot 3/4" @ 100 yds for me consistently. I have some handloads that are close, but haven't been able to definitively top those factory rounds yet.

I'd really like to see a video about the 277 wolverine for use as both a hunting cartridge in a 16"- 20" barrel, and as a protection cartridge in a CMMG Banshee or Dissent.

My favorite bolt action system. I would love a high end.308 bolt gun, but for the same price I was able to purchase one in .308, 6.5 CR go wild, .556 and 300 blk. Just can’t seem to get my hands on one in 7.62x39. Working that bolt a couple hundreds of times, like butter smooth. My choice for top value in an affordable platform with a great trigger for the price.
Check out the CZ527 IN 7.62X39, better rifle and you can find one. I have both, and the 527 gets the nod.
@@twintwo1429 I was actually able to acquire a Ruger ranch 7.62x39 about 6 months ago. Love it. I’ve heard nothing but good things about the cz bolt action rifles. I’ve never shot one though.

My got to budget action is an axis, I have one as a .300 blk with a McGowan prefit and another as a 6br with a shilen profit, but I'm interested in doing an American in .20 practical
Thoughts and experiences with those two barrels?
@@BushmasterM4A3 the 6br shilen on an axis with a boyds stock will hold .25 moa at 200 yards, and the. 300 blk McGowan on an axis in a boyds stock I've gotten 3/4" groups at 200 yards

Did you experience any problems with the extractor. I had three Ruger Americans where the extractor would pop off the bolt face and the parts went flying.
300 blk out with 110 barnes would be great load for young kids first deer rifle. Also would use 125 accubond getting 2300 fps out of 20 inch barrel
Curious why you didn't align the receiver threads to take in account the barrel curvature? Was this a budget consideration? Would be something that I have been accustomed to seeing Gavin do on his builds. Overall I like this new format this was informative but also very entertaining. Fred and you make a good team...can we expect to see more of Fred on the channel?
Definitely a budget concern. The goal here is to build a sub MOA rifle at a minimal price. These techniques are highly repeatable.
awesome video as always guys, but i am very confused. correct me if i missed or misunderstood, the rifle has a 1/8 twist rate (common for most commercial 300 blackouts), gavin said 1/8 twist would shoot better with heavier subsonic rounds, the rifle did indeed shoot better with the heavier rounds. Am i missing something? faster twist almost always stabilizes heavier rounds better. so, shouldn't 1/8 stabilize and group much better with lighter rounds? and why did the rifle shoot better with the heavier/longer rounds while having a slower (for 300 blackout) twist rate, but shot poorly with lighter rounds?

Just an idea. and I know there is at least one company out there that does it but it still looks like they took an AR upper and modified it. What about making a bolt action upper like the rifle you have there that will mate up to an AR lower? The lower already has the mag well. Just curious.

Have your done a rebarrel on a Mauser? I have a Mexican Mauser. One that was built in Mexico. The barrel in it's not shooting well and I have been thinking about a new barrel just not sure what cartridge.
With it being an action built for a coal of 3 inches I would stick with a cartridge based on the x57 case. Probably perhaps 338 or 358.
Wouldn't mind seeing what it takes to blue print such an action. I've seen videos on Remington 700 clones but not a Mauser.
1/10 twist may be the most accurate if you'll be shooting mostly supersonic loads (80 to 125 grains), which would make more sense if you're going to use it for hunting.

I thought a suppressor would affect accuracy. What if you removed it and see what kind of grouping you get.

I truly think of all the budget guns the RA/P is the best aside from that flimsy stock. I have a RA in 308 and a RAP in 243. Love them both!
Would be interesting to see the same gun re-barreled with the Gordy method, then seeing any real word difference shooting the same ammo
Does the muzzle thread need a thread relief so the muzzle device can shoulder up when screwed on?
We ran with no relief cut as the suppressor adapter I had did not need the relief. I like to leave as much material as I can when threading. There is no real problem with a relief cut if you need one for your break or flash suppressor.

Probably the closest normal thing you would get which is the 20 BR which is loosely based off of the 308x1.5 Barnes (so a shorter 308)
We have several 20 caliber wildcats in the inventory. 20/6.8 SPC, 20 Nosler and the biggest case is the 20/220 Swift, for those who like short barrel life.
22-284 middlestead and 20-284 come to mind. Shot a 22-284 for a while. Was fun but barrel life is short.
...I wonder the cost of the new barrel and all the gunsmithing is...

Well, the .300 HAM'R is simply the longer case version of the .300BLK. So if you had this gun I'd simply rent the .300 HAM'R chamber reamer and Viola...
@@ditzydoo4378 Twist rate is too fast for billets I like to shoot in 125 - 135gr especially with lead bullets that I like to shoot. I saw a much better accuracy with slower twist plus I want 26" barrel :)
@@DimaProk This is why I have four different uppers for my AR lower. 6.5 Grendel, .223 Wylde, 7.62x39 and putting together a .300 HAM'R. Each is fun in it's own way. The trick is to use quality parts and you'll never be disappointed.
@@ditzydoo4378 Agree, although after a while I got tired if swapping uppers so I got 2nd lower as well. I build 223 Wylde with piston and spent way more than I planned but it shoots like a dream. I also got 7.62x40WT which was predecessor to 300 HAMR, it's pushing lead 136gr bullets 2330 fps with 1 - 1.5 moa accuracy from 16" barrel. I got a chance to pickup cheap 20" 300 HAMR barrel so I built another upper, the cartridge is almost identical, only .030" longer but I got the barrel for $150 only and Wilson Combat makes match grade barrels. I was going to just replace the barrel but I noticed that older barrel actually supports longer bullets so I'll need to do some testing and decide which one to keep.
@@DimaProk Naaaa, I just pop the two take down pins and go. But I did choose only the best for my lower, like the Rock River Arms 2-stage national match trigger/hammer group. I like that it uses a GI type full dimension main spring set so when faced with those beastly hard Tula and Barka primers it will fire every time. The trigger pull breaks clean at 3.2-pounds every time.
Anyone telling you that cutting muzzle threads is a good idea is not your friend.
But keep doing it, means more customers with bad threads to fix.
1:7 300BLK is old tech.... 1:5 is the way to go!!
Okay I'm confused 🤔 Why did you guys went with 300 blackout when Ruger already sells the gun in this cartridge? Would have been awesome to see a unique cartridge that's not available in bolt action like 300 HAMR.
Supply and demand brother, I had everything for the 300 Blackout and I wanted a bolt gun in that caliber. Could not find one on the shelf at the time, so made my own. :-)
@@ReamerGuyIf it wasn't for ridiculous shortage now that effected everything these guns were widely available and the whole concept of a budget gun fails when you have to spend 900 - 1000 on barrel and various tools like reamers, gauges, angular cutters, threading die and adapter. Why would anyone spend $1000 on a plain jane boring 300 blk build when I got same factory configuration for about $400. I like the concept but if I am going to spend that kind of money I want something unique! If you want 300 blk go build AR15 even now plenty options to build $400 - 500 gun.
@@DimaProk Isn't that the key though while the video is on converting from 350 legend to 300 BLK the principles remain the same. You could absolutely go from mild to wild(cat) using the same principles and tooling!

I have a 1/7 16" barrel on a howa that shoots 110g varmageddon 1/4 inch groups at 100m ....125g speer tnt, 135sierra at half moa....twist means nothing
Velocity is the key to what you are experiencing. I am going to try some light bullets in the 300 AAC just to see what I can get.
@@ReamerGuy i think you can over stabilise when the velocity is is like 3500fps and projectiles start to disintegrate but that doesn't apply to blk speeds lol ....in saying that I'm having a custom blk built with a 1in10 twist 24" barrel to see if I can get even better groups with the lighter projectiles I'd say I won't be able to use anything over 150g

@@rustynut1967 yes, with an MDT chassis. The Indian Creek looks great too but they have trouble keeping them in stock.
