Man, I'm watching this on my 24" display and I am leaning into each of the turns. Haven't fallen off my chair yet, though. Amazing footage!
Video of you leaning or its a lie
I want to like your comment but it is at 69 likes now...
@@thedistance1155 🤣 I have been racing on inline skates and also on bikes for more than two decades. So I completely immerse myself into the race. Leaning comes automatically.
24, that’s pretty small
@@jordyjords1928 Two 24" displays are very good to work with. But I watch videos on only one of them, of course. I also have a 44" curved, but didn't have that available at that moment. It's not much better for vids, though.
Wow. 203 BPM at the end and it was held for so long. That is incredible.
reminds me of a high revving engine
He must be young
Ya......that's really bad for your heart!!!healthy cardio is like 115 to 155 bpm
@@lunam7249 2-3 minutes at that rate wouldn't do any damage
I don’t think my HR has ever been above 185 in my life
Ryan is a BEAST. Love the style, powerful and technical
I won nationals in the same way! Full send attack in a slower moment when no one wanted to chase in the last lap, all out effort to the line. Great effort by Ryan, huge heart rate in the last lap damn
7:02 Orange sock guy's front wheel 😳
I noticed that too. Crazy!
cx legend Kerry Werner knows how to handle his bike, check out his channel
When you race in the Cat 1 level you can trust the other riders around you. I wouldn't ever try that in a lower cat.
Insane how quick he gets when he's off the front, 5mph is massive....it feels like it was sped up by 30% lol. What an effort. Great racing, thanks for sharing!
imagine if there's a rear view camera during that take over..awesome skill
awesome commentary by Roman and an amazing effort by Ryan!
Wow the quality of your videos is phenomenal and this format is so much more entertaining than the typical cycling competition broadcasts or videos
Great footage and a valiant effort by Ryan, can definitely be proud of his performance.
I think that it would be fantastic to have a graphic, illustrating the discussion on taking the lines through corners explained within the first 6min. Hearing it makes some sense, but seeing it would be super helpful. Thanks!
Damn Ryan is a tank. Really thought he got this! Awesome video jeff!
I did chuckle at 9:00 when he was talking about moving up easy but sitting in as 859 rolled passed 15 or so riders at his leisure.
Did you notice how 859 then pulled the straight on the front and was moving back fast half a lap later?
Hey could you do a series on how to find local races? There are a few national level races by me, but very few local races, and I was wondering if you could give some advice on it
For sanctioned events, search www.usacycling.org. Depending on where you are, you may have a Local Association (e.g., www.coloradocycling.org) with additional info on grassroots events. BikeReg.com is another good place to look. I bet if you post your location here, someone in the 150k subscriber base is in your area and can give you good info.
Try talking to local bike shop employees as well!
Idk how it works where you live but here in holland i joined a cycling club this year and started racing. Not a tourclub but like joining a soccer team.
Walk into your LBS and ask them when their group rides are or just flat out ask them what they know about local racing.
@@Garrick42 thanks! id ask around on group rides, but its just older dudes who have no interest/ knowledge of racing. Im from arizona, and its hard to find junior races, but this really helps!
7:20 Black and purple bike with the colorful green yellow kit is either that good or that lucky. Had his front wheel over lapping so many times and so many close calls but never went down.
That's Kerry Werner, top 5 cyclocross rider in USA. He can handle a bike!
Here's the last 6 laps from Kerry's perspective: ruclips.net/video/TaOlq_X3xho/видео.html&t
@@moomoo730 I figured he was top class if he was in this race. There's for sure levels to this sport. This wouldn't fly once in my cat 3 4 races.. lol
@@frankdelatank8454 thank you.
@@frankdelatank8454 just watch it and God damn that shit Is insane.
Awesome seeing the Mikes Bike's crew in my hometown! Would have loved to see NorCal there!
These videos are always a blast to watch.
Wow! There were DOZENS of fans!!!
it was raining pretty hard before the race
Why does USA Cycling always seem to race on the absolute worst street conditions with janky pavement?!? Knowing in advance that the race is going to be there, why don't they work with the municipalities to repave or, at a minimum, fix the crater potholes!? This is such an obvious hazard that would be worth the value to fix. And "yes" I know what department paperwork goes into it (had the convo with a NC Dept Highways engineer). This is not that hard!
it really was not bad.
@@romankilun1527 I'll take your word for it, Roman (figuring you were there and I'm watching a video). I still would like to see the effort made on both sides, knowing that barriers will probably never change in the next 10 years. lol
@@sknkwrksowner it was a cool course, in a cool town. Really nothing wroong with it. Except maybe needs better promotion for attendance, but I dont think bike racing is so popular in this area. Fun downtown for going out!
@@romankilun1527 the attendance I'm chalking up to folks having lockdown fatigue. A lot people can't be bothered to go out, and some are still worried about it medically. Some are the 'citizens' in the movie Wall-e. lol Numbers are down everywhere for non-traditional events (NFL, concerts = 'traditional') here in the states; both an opinion and as reported in news, etc.
You have never been to New England if you think those are the worst street conditions.
That last lap looks unreal-y’all are speed demons!
As a someone just getting into riding, sustaining 170bpm+ for 50kilometers is nuts. And sustaining 200+ for over 80secomds . Wow. The human body pushed to the limits is incredible
It shows the level of this race that Ryan was riding with 60 km/h as the others blazed away...
those cracks look absolutly terrifying, some serious effort there though!
That part where he said I’m going to let my body in my bike show me the way was complete facts
What a cool video. Glad I came across the channel.
thanks for the free paid subscription advice XD
there's some quote about the bold getting the spoils, nice try
Thank you so much Sensei! You are a blessing!
Amazing footage and riding. How do you manage to overlay speed, map, cadence and power over the video? It's synced perfectly.
Not the best team tactics I've seen, but it sure was a great effort. Good video!
hard to always be the best
Mike Hernandez and BB are a good squad.
go solo cuz YOLO!
Just enjoying the Kerry Werner show
Definitely my favorite move. A moments hesitation and he would have won!
Crazy that his HR was basically 180+ for the whole duration of this clip. 180+ is usually the point where I have ~30s until I faint. Whole other level.
Super tall dude with the helmet mounted GoPro and orange socks looking like a Cat 6 with his front wheel lol
This was really close, if he only had a bit more power in the end. amazing race!
Actually, it wasn't close at all. He got passed a long way from the finish line.
@@MrTubsterr he provided a nice lead out for the actual winners. It looked like 8 guys passed him.
Where was legion?
they are a UCI pro team
@@romankilun1527 facts, thanks
#868 rocking that Austro-Daimler - don't see that everyday
My HR rose in the last lap just by watching!
Has nothing to do with cycling, but as someone interested in urban design, I couldn't help but notice how much of that downtown is occupied by parking lots. What a shame that this is the reality in American and Canadian cities.
What tire pressure to maintain those speeds ? And I’m guessing tubular 28mm ?
tubeless at around 70psi
Zero hesitation, because hesitation is defeat -- Isshin
I have a question for Jeff: You race crits regularly, and we only see a few crashes. Of course, the more often you practice the better, and you guys have lots of experience, but would the danger for a crash be higher, if you guys, with your experience, were racing fixed gear single speed crits?
obv
Go back far enough in U.S. racing (at least 50 years before the first Red Hook Crit), and ALL racing was done on fixed gear bikes, as the Amateur Bicycle League of America (the forerunner to the USCF and USAC) did not allow freewheels or derailleurs at all (even for actual, hilly road races, few as there were of those!) until much later than they were the commonplace, accepted standard in Europe.
Very few recent newcomers to this sport realize this fact.
Obviously, the speeds back then were WAY WAY under any Red Hook style fixed gear crit is nowadays, let alone any multi-geared road bike crit.
@@nofascistsonmywatch I wouldn't count on the speeds back in the day being that much slower than Red Hook. I saw some pretty high speed fixed gear crits in the 50's. There were some very competitive racers back then that had football experience. Lots of elbows out riding and rubbing.
@@bdcooper5855 Are we talking about GB/Europe and their football, or the USA and our version of football??
As far as speed goes, just look at the times for say The Tour Of Sommerville (N.J.) crit.
They were well over 2 hours for a 50 mile race way back then, as compared to the ~1 hour high 30 minutes, to high 40 minute range nowadays, on fully geared road bikes.
The winning time at Red Hook has to be quicker than 25 MPH (or even less), correct??
@@nofascistsonmywatch Yeah, I'm remembering with a 80 year old brain, not data. American football, big guys. It's all still racing bikes and I love it! I remember the races having lots of surges and tactics with blocking and sprinting. Primes with cans of ham as prizes etc. The 'good ol' days don't compare to flat out most of the race and modern bikes and tires that can really corner. Those old silk sew-ups had a lot of punctures. Thanks for answering, I love your vids. FORZA!
I remember the National crit in Downers Grove, IL. The course was packed with spectators. What is going on with US cycling to lose so much interest???
Roanoke, VA, is in the middle of nowhere, plain and simple. I honestly was shocked that it was being held there. Downers is the Chicagoland metro area. The nearest metro area to Roanoke is either Richmond or Charlotte NC, both 3 hours away per google maps. The race might as well have been held in Alma, Nebraska.
@@sknkwrksowner That is a good point. It just so happens that I now live in North Carolina, and the National crit was again held 20 minutes from where I live, in High Point NC. Same thing there, low turnout. What was even worse, the field was only about 50 riders and the course was so short, a small break lapped the field. It felt like a local cat 1 crit.
@@Nobleazure good lord! How do you pass the infrastructure of WS, Charlotte, even here in Raleigh, for High Point?!? lmao That must have been during the years when I was just mountain biking and could care less about road. yeesh
I have not attended for the last 30 years or so (or ridden it for more than 45 years), but even back in ancient times (the early 70s when I did ride/attend) the oldest continuously run crit (or any race for that matter) in this land, the Tour Of Sommerville (N.J.) always had spectators 3 deep around the whole course (5 deep at the start/finish line).
Of course, it was the biggest thing of the year in that town, and is in a densely populated, suburban N.Y.C. area.
203bpm wtf?!
#902 threw the whole load of laundry on. Neon blue shoes, neon Orange socks, neon green and yellow jersey, blue helmet…blinding! Only thing better is #901 (teammate) fighting each other for position.
At 7:19 and 7:01, looks like the rider with the orange socks almost touched wheels with the rider in front. Not sure if the camera angle made it seem worse than it was?
Oh yeah baby another norcal video
Like wow. Rider #859 as you are talking about energy, moving up etc. (9:00 in) Just soft-pedaled ( looked Like) past 18 other riders
And then was going backwards fast half a lap later…
Awesome vid, got my resting HR up to 67, normal 35. Was on the edge of my seat!
35?! are you still living?
@@seabracing8880 Any below that and there are some underlying medical/neurological problems, regardless of (super) fitness level, or genetics, but that resting rate is not too low.
Wow ….great one !
Oh my goodness.. min 7.02 guy in orange socks almost touched wheels with the guy in front.
♥♥♥♥ here too
Can you tell me which software is used for the driving information on the screen?
203BPMs.. 1Km before the finish. move? He had no chance. He is no Sagan.
Paid subscriber here ✋ am finally getting my money’s worth!
what do I do if I have enough energy to push all throughout the race even when tired
Okay so looking at the feet on the fencing.....They look dangerous to me! 😳
Narrow course? 🤔
He! Kerry Werner!...i mean, "Sherman's dad"
Kerry being sketchy…haha
MPH, Criterium, Nascar, Merica FxYeah.
this is spicy. US looks to be growing in criteriums. Potentially better then EU in the future??
Yup, the way it's going we would have a few top 10 places in a WORLDS Crit Championship, but sadly, no one who can climb the steep, switch-backed, ungraded cols of Europe with their best.
We do have a few standout TT riders, but still not quite at their level. ☹
What is ryan age for 203 bpm.
awesome!
Feels weird not hearing the sounds from the race
very cool
Also love the content
Gotta get danny u on the channel
17:45 lance armstrong
I feel like if you're at the end of the race the person thats being sacrificed should accidently fall at the last turn and make everybody crash behind him. Guaranteed win.
This camera tho!
who many psi do you pump on your wheels, you are very fast at the corner
70-85 psi depending on the pavement and if its wet
I raced cat 1 about 20 years ago and we all ran 23 mm tires at 120 psi....lol
hoooow did i miss this in my back yard???
next year!
I have no knowledge of crit racing other than the many many many videos I've watched, mostly your channel, and all I was thinking is "why is a guy who's a sprinter on the front with 940m to go?" I think the other teams outsmarted him and let him lead them out. Why waste one of your own leadout guys when someone else is willing to do the work? Then, at 200m, you open your sprint and blow past everyone. Am I wrong?
Ryan was off the front not on the front. he was doing his signature last lap attack which has resulted in many wins for him.
A true sprinter wouldn't attack at that distance. But like NorCal said, that's what worked for him in the past. Unfortunately, this race had a fast pace and stronger riders so that wasn't the best tactic to try.
Would it had been a better tactic not to go full send so early and maybe wait a few more corners, then ripp??
He had the power..
probably could've finished better if he waited, but he wouldn't have won if he waited. this was an attempt to catch them off guard and win after they hesitate.
no fans at nationals...WOW!
203 HR?!??
Just by looking at the effort it was really too early with 950m to go. Low key wanted Ryan to become the national champ but eveyone else is much fitter. It was a nice try though
..where was this advice 3 years ago lmfaoo
Idk why I find bike formations more nerve racking than race cars lol Maybe cause the cars will crash but the bikes will make the rider eat shit!
....too early for the attack ...! ...I knew it....!, amazing anyways,...
crit racing on cervelo s5, sheeshhh
#868....lower your seat..
shoutout 897 :D
sketchy!
too bad they dot have good announcing instead of this interview, they did this in my town long ago and had a fantastic announcer calling out the laps and the leaders, pumping up the crowd and setting up betting laps, it was exciting for the crowd
Who picked that crappy road for a nat'l championship?
Actually, it wasn't even close. Very bad mistake to make when the pace was so high with 1/2 lap to go. Second, never assume someone or some team will do something during a race. Every race is different and every rider feels different during the race.
man american cycling is weird af wtf is that track ? im baffled by the fact that they ride something like that on national championship
The pro tip was a big word salad. He said making all the right decisions and you get to the front tired? But then do what’s right for you over and over again and you’ll get to the front not tired? Wut?
good race but jesus, that dude is hard to listen to.
