I don't do crits, I don't race, I don't even ride road, but this has been the most entertaining and enjoyable series ever. I'm a mountain biker with a little gravel sprinkled in but watching these rides and EJs entire journey has been the most enjoyable way to spend time on my trainer ever...almost enough to get me on a road bike....nah, not quite, but almost. So fun to watch and the dynamic between Jeff and EJ is fantastic. Keep it up guys, great work!
I literally learnt everything I know about crit racing from this channel and I've won a couple of races from the experience I got from here. I'm glad I followed till this point. Thank you so much.
This channel is getting better and better. I been watching you for over 1 year now. Very informative and entertaining. I started riding at 32 and 320lbs, today am 38 and 265lbs and dropping. But I am way stronger my average speed for a 25mile ride here in Miami (all flat) 19mph to 22mph. I feel amazing. As an ex football player it has been the best transition .. 🤣✌🏾🇵🇷
Thanks for the shout out! ;) Love the videos, 100% initial inspiration for my own channel, keep up the good work, EJ you're a beast!!! - the og "Crit Dad." 😂
been watching and following you for a long time, this was my favorite video amongst the many I've seen. That tease right before the sprint was torture!!! well done both of you!!
Cool. Great commentary and videography. A lot to learn. What makes bike racing so fun. Not always the strongest guy. Experience is huge in bike racing, ability to read a race. Knowing self, competition, the course, the weather conditions 👍
awesome episode. Red peloton was crit-dad's saving grace. I love how it's not the strongest but most clever rider that usually wins. I never thought I'd be so into watching crit races. I am in my mid 30s, but I'm seriously thinking about trying to find a race.
Great race! Agree with what everyone is saying. Best couch to crit yet. Ej has a great sprint/great power. Fantastic progress so early on in the season. Looking forward to seeing how things develop. The competition from Ej may encourage you to develop your own strategy even further. 👍🏻👍🏻👌🏻
Yo.. so nice to see EJ’s growth in such a short time, what a legend! Must be a proud poppa Jeff? Thanks you guys for the inspiration. Keep up the great videos and content.
That was a great finish. I am a Sprinter myself and I’ve put out massive power 1200-1400 watts. But it does me no good because my positioning be off. Still learning Cat 3. Appreciate the tips Jeff.
A bit more about ketones: the effect of ketones is massivly overrated by a lot of people in the sport. Most of your body's organs can mainly use carbohydrates and fats as a source of energy. (and in case of these two nearly running out, there is a way of converting proteins to a source of energy, but this is not relevant here). During an effort, say for instance a cycling race, your muscle's will mainly be using carbohydrates as an energy source. sounds familiar right? the thing is, your brain is a bit of a different organ. It can solely use carbohydrates as an energy source, and not fats or even proteins in the form of amino acids. But when your body has run out, or is very low on carbohydrates, that technically means your brain cells would die of because they don't have an energy source. The body has a way of preventing/prolonging this: ketones. they are made in the liver from free fatty acids (fat) and are able to pass trough the blood-brain barries (unlike fats) and thus are able to compensate a bit for the lack of carbohydrates. The aim in using ketones in cycling, is to fuel your brain on ketones, subsequently leaving more carbohydrates for the muscles to use. however, we cant tell our brain to ONLY use ketones, and not carbohydrates, so as long as there are carbohydrates (which every racing cyclist ingests before and during a race) they will also be used by the brain. so technically ketones will give your body a tiny bit more energy, but the effect is really minimum, especially for the price of them compared to carbohydrate sources. Even in top tier world tour teams like Jumbo Visma, only their top athletes get them in certain races, because the price just doesn't wheigh up to the gain in performance.
The way pro-tour teams use ketones at this point, is a ketone shot immediately after the finish. Its beneficial effects are mostly for recovery. It doesn't actually help cycling performance itself that much, and it takes away resources from regular energy sources that your body can use way more efficiently
EJ should check out track racing. With that kind of power and overall physiology he is designed and built for the track. Endurance rider most likely, but his natural instantaneous power makes me think he might even be a good kilo rider, or anything he tries his hand at.
Not only do you have a limited amount of surges in a race but as temperatures start to rise and the heat comes back it's a whole other ball game and those short bursty efforts are much, much more taxing than when there's a cool breeze and mild weather. July in Canada is hot and suffocating because of the immense humidity and I find I have to be even more strategic with my energy expenditure. Been following since my crash in 2020 and my titanium collarbone (our badge of honour for bike racing) EJ! When are you getting your own plate/s!!?? 😂😜
EJ great work mate!!! Quick suggestion though, try racing without the leg warmers or tights or whatever they are...reason....too much detrimental heat build-up intra race with possible cardiac drift.
ya I agree with most of the comments here =) This duo Coach vs Student style is Dope I love it .. Hope you keep a good healthy Frienememy relationship going on the Alviso stuff =)
i’ve read ketones are usually only good for long endurance races, i’m only a couple minutes into this video but i’m interested to see if you noticed any difference in a crit while on the ketones. also i didn’t notice, what form of ketones and home many mgs did you take..?
EJ looking back is what cost him the race. You don’t look back until crossing finish line. Rookie mistake. Agree if EJ is at the end for sprint Jeff is gonna have his hands full😅
Ej definitely had that "oh shit" moment when he looked back and saw Jeff coming on his left side on full afterburners.
“Nailed it on the head 😂” (EJ)
That look EJ gave was hilarious!!!!! 😂😂😂😂
@@CycoWarriorx at this moment, he knew he effed up!
@@NorCalCycling Let’s talk. I WANT to sigh up for the Masterclass. BUT I have questions!!!
Legion made that same face ;)
EJ is a sprinter that rides like a TT rider. As soon as he rides like Jeff he's going to be nearly unstoppable. I've enjoyed watching the progression.
dude is like a bag of cats, that can "lift heavy things.." But astonishing power, and rides a full race in the drops..!!
This is THE best season of Couch to Crit. Keep 'em coming!
*Couch to Cat1 :P
Man, EJ is straight-up a Cat 1 threat. He gets so much smarter every week, too.
This might be the best episode ever! Love the competitive vibe between the two of you, and can't wait for another Alviso!

A sign of a great mentor/leader is when the student eclipses their teacher. It’s happening soon, can’t wait to witness more of your journey.
EJ snapping 1300 every few minutes and hitting 1600 early on makes me want to see how he'd do in track cycling
EJ, one month into racing and already beating guys who've made a career of it. I dub thee shock and awe.
Man it's so inspirational to see EJ killing it so fast. Makes me tangibly see what I can accomplish if I keep going at it.
Just wanna shout out EJ for the awareness to wipe the front GoPro mid race lol. Doing it for the content
I'll take a cliffhanger to explain ANYTIME. That's good stuff.
This was one of the best Couch to Crit videos so far. Loved the competition and seeing how it all played out. Thanks for sharing the journey.
I don't know how but these videos keep getting better. The reaction from the ketones was hilarious. Killer race!
Jeff : EJ, what did you learn?
EJ: "HAHA, EJ GO BRRRRR?!...uh, no, not this one. EJ no BRR"

Are you So.Mia orBroward? My neck of the woods. El Hueco has fun crits I see!
Ninja Jeff vs. Apprentice EJ gives me Star Wars vibes, loving this content!
Thanks for the shout out! ;) Love the videos, 100% initial inspiration for my own channel, keep up the good work, EJ you're a beast!!! - the og "Crit Dad." 😂
A w e s o m e ! This one goes in the classics bin. Crit-Dad V Grasshopper!
Jeff: "I'm out in EJ-Land"
EJ: YEAH!
lol
This combination just works. Ej brings great energy to the video.
13:55 🚀and EJ laughing is the best part of this video (besides that "oh fuck" look back moment at the end)
When will E.J be announced as a team member of yours? It’s incredible how you talk about „chillin“ while doing 40 kph.
I thought your profile pic was the strava icon
Loving this series. Good to see you showing grasshopper the ropes.
2 minutes in, bike racing is now second to bromance on this serie.
This was one of the best vids yet! I love that you guys came in 1/2. Well done boys!
1600 watts??? Absolutely insane EJ
THIS IS WHAT IM HERE FOR LETS GO
Crit dad is such a great name ^^
Crit daddy running down the man with Expendable Joules to burn. Incredible race, boys.
Absolutely love this friendship, looking forward to EJ smashing you!
This was an amazing race for both of you. Was at the edge of my seat the whole way. Big thumbs up 👍🏻
Can’t say I didn’t see this coach vs student thing coming - but not this fast…😂😂😂
Damn! EJ, you’re a force to be reckoned with! Looking forward to seeing the outcome of the next one of these.
Great race Jeff and EJ! Looking forward to the next one
Nice video, great final sprint
Awesome race and coverage. Couch to crit has turned into a rivalry. Fun.
been watching and following you for a long time, this was my favorite video amongst the many I've seen. That tease right before the sprint was torture!!! well done both of you!!
I love this episode, so nice to see this competition and perspective from both of you
Cool. Great commentary and videography. A lot to learn. What makes bike racing so fun. Not always the strongest guy. Experience is huge in bike racing, ability to read a race. Knowing self, competition, the course, the weather conditions 👍
EJ's laugh is piercing my ears every 3 seconds but I am glad he's a happy guy
This is the best bike video on RUclips! So fun to watch.
This channel got even better by 10000x as great as it already were
EJ’s power meter couldn’t handle all those watts 😂
This is awesome content. Master and Apprentice. With all the training and race advice. Great channel guys
Really enjoying what you are doing
Loved it when EJ whacked the handlebar in frustration at getting pipped at the line by his sensei! 😂 Well done both on the NorCal Cycling 1-2! 💪💪💪
Great race boys! What a great video. Got into cycling a couple years ago and this is my first time watching a race analysis.
awesome episode. Red peloton was crit-dad's saving grace. I love how it's not the strongest but most clever rider that usually wins. I never thought I'd be so into watching crit races. I am in my mid 30s, but I'm seriously thinking about trying to find a race.
Your being very creative with your videos I like that💯✅
This video was so great I watched quite a few parts of it a number times. Thanks guys!!! Can’t wait to see EJ tangle with thirsty bear.
Big smiles al the way through the video. Keep them coming!
Love the fun y'all are having with this -- makes the videos really just fun to watch...
Awesome vid, great work from both of you. Timed on the video i think EJ's sprint is about 17 seconds, gooood effort
Great race! Love the Dad and Son competition and way to go EJ! Didn't get the win but looking good for the future.
Absolutely great video to see the improvement on EJ but it shows the experience Jeff has and it showed in the result.
Great race! Agree with what everyone is saying. Best couch to crit yet. Ej has a great sprint/great power. Fantastic progress so early on in the season. Looking forward to seeing how things develop. The competition from Ej may encourage you to develop your own strategy even further. 👍🏻👍🏻👌🏻
Really good video here. Thanks Jeff and EJ.
Yo.. so nice to see EJ’s growth in such a short time, what a legend! Must be a proud poppa Jeff? Thanks you guys for the inspiration. Keep up the great videos and content.
EJ’s kick is actually fuckin wild
That was epic EJ great effort
Really really great. The sportsmanship is really great.
Great job guys!!! Couldn’t scripted a better race and finish!!
EJ might make you want to do "Crit to Couch" if he wins all the Alvisos 🤣!!
You know i really love EJ's journey , i hope he'll get to be one of the mike's bike team member as well . He's a strong rider
I really love this videos. I'm watching them all!! Hope you continue with it!
Fantastic stuff. EJ makes this crits lark look easy.
What a freaking race!! We’ll done boys
That was a great finish. I am a Sprinter myself and I’ve put out massive power 1200-1400 watts. But it does me no good because my positioning be off. Still learning Cat 3. Appreciate the tips Jeff.
Thoughts on doing a "Masters" age couch to crit next? EJ has mind-blowing progress, would be interesting to see something more realistic!
1st and 2nd place? A very good tandem for sure!!

Loved every minute of this. Keep em coming. GJ EJ. Love seeing your progress.
Now we need an Alviso ridden as team mates. Attack and counterattacks.
Great race guys! Super fun to watch that unfold!

This episode was the best. We need more of these.

Loved this one! EJ, you paused your sprint when you looked back.

so entertaining! well done yallll
this was awesome - Jeff you are amazing.
Absolutely Fantastic video!!
Thank you
Good job, EJ. 1x “hindsight is 20/20” reference😄 Bet ‘ya you tried your best to control yourself saying that every time👍😁
definitely my favorite couch to crit season.
Loving this series. Pulling for EJ long-term but Jeff, for all us masters riders, give me hope and bring a few more Ws to the table 💪
Great video guys, one of the best yet
EJ is out here for blood now! He has tasted the forbidden Alviso fruit and is ready for seconds!
EJ great work mate!!! Quick suggestion though, try racing without the leg warmers or tights or whatever they are...reason....too much detrimental heat build-up intra race with possible cardiac drift.
This is first class entertainment. Thanks!
ya I agree with most of the comments here =) This duo Coach vs Student style is Dope I love it .. Hope you keep a good healthy Frienememy relationship going on the Alviso stuff =)

Love how EJ looks to his left with 50 meters to see if anyone was there. I think that took a second off your sprint.
This was absolutely amazing!
showed that kid who's the boss 😎
Great video as always
Cheers from Quebec CA
Jeff is Emperor Palatine and Ej is Darth Vader.
💯 BEST Laugh ever 🤣😂 E.J. 💯
I was on the edge of my seat!!!
