Nah, didn’t do the ‘shh’ or the point to the head. Gotta leave a few options on the table for the next W

Hi Jeff. Love your videos. Would you be interested in putting out a "criterium etiquette primer" sort of video for new racers (speaking for myself)? I'd be interested in knowing those intricacies from a well-seasoned racer like you.
Yes please do this!
Watch more of the videos, including past races / events. . Etiquette and technique are generally mentioned throughout.
@@markhoward9355 having seen most of his content already, it seems like the focus is on tactics and strategy. Still great stuff to take in. I guess I'm interested in listening to an experienced cat 1 racer's take on the "unwritten" rules of the peleton. What's proper and considerate? What are the obvious and not-so-obvious dick moves? Etc.. hope that makes sense. Tactics and strategy seem like a different subject, to me.
+1 to this, Jeff. Would be excellent for newer racers who watch your channel.
An extremely compelling and enjoyable race breakdown. Fantastic content.
You can always trust Jeff to give a detailed breakdown on critérium racing.
I love the topic of crank length!!
If we assume compensatory adjustments to gearing, then IMO the general theory on this is that peak power potential is roughly the same (within a reasonable window of crank lengths), due to it being mostly dependent on the peak combination of muscle contractile velocity + force (which is purely physiological and has nothing to do with the choice of cranks). Longer cranks have the advantage of promoting a larger working range for the muscles and slower contraction frequency, and thus greater perfusion (blood flow & O2 delivery). Shorter cranks have the advantage of allowing for a more aerodynamic position.
Therefore, when it comes to pure speed, which is a combination of peak power output and aerodynamics, shorter cranks are preferred (within reason). When it comes to endurance (and especially climbing), longer cranks might be better.
The other possible benefit of shorter cranks (for some) is hip and knee comfort, since shorter cranks can help avoid extremely acute angles at either joint. For instance, if you have any issues with hip discomfort at the top of the pedal stroke, shorter cranks are definitely worth experimenting with.
As an additional note -- I think some people tend to get confused by the relationship between torque/cadence and short-vs-long cranks. By this I mean that there is a tendency to associate longer cranks with "higher torque" and shorter cranks with "higher cadence".
Both of these associations are trivially correct when considering the torque and angular velocity at the bottom bracket -- but that is irrelevant to the question of performance, because bicycles have gears... and regardless of the crank length, a gear ratio can be chosen to favor either torque or cadence, as preferred by the rider.
The ultimate factor that controls the balance between the rider's preferred combination of pedal force and pedal velocity is the force/velocity profile of the rider's muscles -- not the crank length.
Finnaly back on track. Ej was a great dude, but, you are the channel and i was more and more far away from your content. As it was just ej and nothing more. Good to have you back
+1
At 9:07 that advertising board squeeze was some intelligent racing. Didn't move, just held the line, guy on the inside knew he was running out of space to make the pass.
* marked safe from L39ION train
haha
My inseam is about 28, and I bounce back and forth between 140mm (China and custom sources) and 150mm cranks (rotor) -- it really helps my position and less knee and Achilles/foot issues and, therefore, my longevity. I'm 51 and still riding, not for performance. The watt curve changes; short cranks are probably not a sprinter's 1st choice, but, in the end, you can spin faster and longer.
I went from 172.5 to 165 on both of my bikes about 6 months ago and I love it. It made sense for me. I’m definitely looking forward to your take on shorter cranks. Love your content, thank you 🙏
I'm short (5'8"), and went all the way to 155s... and I would never go back to 170s.
I'm the same height as you and also on 155s. @@jameshegeman5660
i really can't see how you have been significantly impeded by the crash. You feathered the brakes and your speed dropped to 24mph, being mid-pack. I know it was a split-second decision, but imo staying in the race would have been the more efficient choice.
Anyhow, great video as always!
I agree
Great demos of how to move up in the drone shots!
Good thing you didn't try infiltrating it, otherwise Justin might've crashed you out!
😂
Damn… you beat me to it lol
Jokes ripe for for taking till next season 😂
This couldn’t be more true, I’ve witnessed it first hand
If you can beat them, cry about them. 🤣🍻
Love these intelligentsia videos, they're always some of your best ones each the year, keep em coming NorCal.
So cool to see the Legion team in formation at the front.
Jeff, best NorCal video yet, and that’s saying something. Love the “it doesn’t always work out” contrasts, too.
More equipment content is appreciated. Keep crushing it Jeff.
10:04 Dudes wearing a Callaway golf glove
It’s Chris Hildreth, golf gloves ftw. 😂
😂😂😂
Literally thinking of going from 170 to 165 cranks also. Would love to hear your reasoning. I personally feel like for crits, an extra 5mm in the corners isn't just marginal, its huge!
Great vid, and yes please for more equipment content.
5:23 mark - Gonna start saying "snuggle up" on my next ride.
Only if it’s a teammate 😍
Higher bottom bracket, fatter tires, and narrower pedals are options to shorter cranks.
Would love to watch a deep dive on crank length, especially for crits.
Yea I’m a mtn biker and I’ve continually shorted my cranks over the years.
Awesome footage and race analysis.
Love the content as allways. Huge respect
Crank length discussion - Yes.
one of your best videos! so much insights
165mm at 188cm (74") work well. Would go less if it was regularly available. Fantastic editing man
Absolutely interested in a video on crank lengths!
Great Video Jeff
Shorter crank video is a good idea from a sprinter / crit racer perspective
Awesome! Thanks 👍 👌
That macabre leg wobble at 5:50
Jeff: I don't want to talk about crank length right now.
The comments:
Agree you should have probably followed the Mito-q wheel rather than Legion. Looks like they were the stronger team.
Such class from Will🚴♂️
this type of racing requires so much strategy and planning its so tough
So Jeff I ordered some coffee a couple of months ago. I need to tell you that I used the code and did not get a discount. Coffee was excellent though
Was it your first subscription order? I can let them know if that’s the case. But ya coffee is delicious we must’ve gone through pounds of it in Chicago
Thank you for your reply and all the great videos. Yes it was my first order, placed on July 3, 2023.
Equipment discussions: put on a lab coat and goggles, channel your inner scientist, and do a deep dive like you're a professor giving a lecture to a auditorium of freshmen furiously taking notes.
Man cx bikes are the new crit bikes. High bottom bracket plus short cranks = pedal clearance for days
at this level you would be at a serious disadvantage using a cx bike mainly in the aero department
What’s the difference between these 8:33 and dive-bombing? Wouldn’t this be considered dangerous?
drone footage - 👌
Crank length affects power output.
Not as. much as you might think - you lose a little getting up to speed but if you spin faster, it evens out
To second gmen1305 -- At least one study has shown the peak power output remains pretty constant over a wide range of crank lengths.
If you think about the physical theory of this -- Because bicycle gears can be adjusted, power output is ultimately controlled by the peak combination of muscle contractile velocity + force. These factors are independent of crank length. Crank length probably more affects secondary variables such as muscle contraction frequency and perfusion (vascular pump efficiency). These play more of a role in endurance factors.
Please get Van Rensburg as a guest on the channel 🇿🇦
If you had your full Mike's team there, would you have been competing at the end to win it?
jeff lucky you were not crashed out by legion (williams)!!
i love my 165 crank. i would love a crank video.
Jeff would I be better of with Large size with Rule28 skinsuit or X-Large? I am 195cm (6'4") and 78-80kg. I have relative big arms for a cyclist but otherwise I reckon a climber posture, if one can be at such a height. I'd rather not be packed like a sausage, but would be nice to get those aero gains, cheers bud.
I’m 6ft and I use medium, but it’s pretty snug
@@NorCalCycling ok then for sure I'll go for a Large, thanks bud. And yeah fast recovery and good luck with insurance regardin smashed bike after that collision the other day:/
You had it pretty hard last year collarbone and SL7 in pieces and now this, stay motivated and dont give up.
Shame about the GoPro running out, the new Go Pro 12 looks a lot better for battery life but no GPS for overlays?
No GoPros have the overlays I use the computer file to create them and add them after
@@NorCalCycling Ah I see. After watching DC Rainmakers video where he mentioned no GPS for speed data I honestly thought that you couldn’t add that for overlays, cheers for the info. Looking at getting the GP 12 for my future crit races. 👌🏻
if you no longer go for a gap that exists, you're no longer a racing driver - ops, rider
kkkkkkkkkk
The only reason you didn't get that race was because you didn't have a full team with you. It is as simple as that. I know that you could've taken that race, but going against powerful people with only 1 mate, I dont know dude. Great video.
Why shorter cranks and why not crit specific frames with high BBs like the trackies?
changing geometry has big implications for fit and handling
i was tired just watching it, imagine been in the bike there...
I'm sure there is someone making the "I tried following the Nor Cal leadout" video; I just wish I could find it. 🤷🏽♂️
It’ll be my next race breakdown video from giro di San Francisco

L39ion living rent free in EVERYONE’s minds 😂😂….. From Cali to Australia (Nero Show), just put JW or L39ion on your video and the comments section and video-clicks go up….
Hate it or love it, rising tide raises all the boats…. L39ion is the tide… 😅😅
I don’t think you are significantly impeded
Agree. Didn't deserve a free lap.
U could put an arrow to show us you😅
If I was you I wouldn't do it or you gonna end up kissing the road thanks to the Williams 😂😂😂
Legion is D I R T Y!!!!
why the guy at 5:51 was shaking?
i crashed several times watching this
Body position is infinitely more important for pedaling through a corner than crank length or ANYTHING else. So many good riders clip their pedal because they're leaning their bike like a moto-cross rider instead of leaning (very slightly) their body keeping the bike more upright. I've attended and taught classes in this field (both Superbike and bicycle) and many good riders have it wrong. Nose over the inside brake lever (turning left, put your nose over the left brake lever), eyes level to the horizon and you can pedal through the turns in this particular crit with 180 crank arms. 165's is going against physics. Sure, it'll keep your pedal further from the ground, but at what cost? A simple adjustment in your position on the seat, and you can keep the 172.5's. If you can point me to the law of physics that supports a smaller lever, I'd like to see it.
The rider at 4:23 exhibits an absolutely perfect position over his bike. And the rider 2 behind him (3rd position, green/black kit) is an absolute disaster. Not saying the rider in 3rd is a bad rider. But he could be much better after a weekend at Laguna Seca or Barber MotorSports Park SuperBike School.
Was expecting some high IQ racing
Epic shit
165s as a sprinter? l mean gotta do some sprint tests and you quite tall ...
great content and commentary again. Are you comfortable commenting on the Justin Williams suspension(s) and why they are not following USAC minimum suspension policy designed to try to eliminate this stuff. This suspension is even shorter than the first, which is kind of silly as a repeat offender. Would you comment or you don't want to b/c you have to be next to these guys going 35+ in a corner. Thanks again for the content!
take a shot everytime jeff says
1. moving up
2. easier said than done
3. breaking my own rule
🥴
Celly dump from the guy that won…maybe 3 or 4 different ones
is this more a cat 3 race when looking at the scene in europe?
No
I don't know why you post these clickbait titles because of that crews internet power when they publicly talked shit about you
Lucky you didn't get punched.
Send Legion to europe and lets see them get smoked
What a laughably pretentious team name. Would be hilarious to see them try and compete at any level whatsoever in Europe.
Janse
Hey... Where is EJ??
EJ - RIP
what happend between ej an jeff can somoene sexplain that to me
Ej is a clout chaser that just likes to boast high watts while Jeff is the experienced mature crit racer that provides informative info. Those two eventually probably didn't see eye to eye. This channel is better off
Every couch to crit ends badly, the other guy just disappeared one day too
EJ refused to get a badly needed haircut. No, seriously, IMO, he's chasing bling. I got an email from Performance Bicycle, and they are pimping EJ's channel so you can see why the fissure occurred ($$). I will do all in my power to not watch EJ.
Season one athlete Logan had a kid (and I think changed jobs) and is taking a break from the sport
@@NorCalCycling -- kid to crit would be helpful for some of us...
Just ANOTHER EPIC FAILURE!!!!!
1st!🥳
Legion is just way too strong.
But, they didn't win.
? They literally didn't win even though they brought 9 riders lol
How many times are you going to use "Legion" as a clickbait in your video title? The dude doesn't have much respect for you, it's getting weird.
idk a few more i guess 🤷♂️. they're the biggest crit team in the US and in this case they controlled the leadout it would be weird if I didn't mention them.
When Cory recently posted their commentary of Armed Forces there's a moment near the finish where he briefly makes note of the "that guy" coming up fast in second place. He knows darn well who that rider and team was, but chose not to mention either by name. Not because he dislikes them, but because he doesn't want to give an inch to his opposing teams not in a race or outside it, which is fine that's his choice. They aren't reciprocating the free publicity you provide to thousands of fans and it's not accidental. Your team is really strong, has been for well over 10 years. You don't need to name drop Legion in this because your videos stand on their own... even if they are the dominant leadout in this race.@@NorCalCycling

I have good reasons
It's "in" for good reasons: Aerodynamics (++) and comfort in the hips and knees (for some).
And the only reason for the Old School "170s or 175s For Everyone" was that prior to the internet shopping boom, it was harder for manufacturers to make money on "outside the norm" products.
