To truly preach to the heart emphasize more narrative preaching...we are all hard wired for story (as you mentioned with the Widow of Nain). However, the deepest heart preaching comes when the audience identifies deeply with the key characters in the narrative. Have the text of the story read, but then tell it accurately in your own words. I always have my audience retell the story to each other and then I unpack it with questions addressed to the congregation...that's right, I actually engage the audience directly with observation questions and subsequent applications. In 30+ years of ministry I had never seen it done, but having proven it over a decade I am convinced of its power in not only touching the heart, but biblically even the gut (reins).

Thanks Brandon, your insight really challenged me to slow down and be intentional. Allowing the hearers to be embedded in the story(through their life journey) to the point where they can reflect and respond is a great and productive charge. May God Bless your ministry.

Fantastic video, God bless you Brandon. I wonder how to tell a personal story to start a sermon and enable the audience to identify with you as you take then along the journey.
