So much Led Zeppelin flavor and feel to this song. I just love it. I will forever feel that Ann Wilson is the best woman rocker ever. He voice is just insane.
So I was the lead vocalist in a Heart tribute band back in the day (early 80's). Heart was my inspiration more specifically Ann Wilson. She has always been a powerhouse vocalist. I think it is reprehensible what the music industry did to her, focusing on her weight instead of her incredible talent. She will always be the greatest female rock vocalist of all time in my mind! If you want to react/review an awesome heart song from the Little Queen album, try Dream of the Archer! It is everything that makes them great and I think you will love it!
Wow; if you can sing Ann's stuff then you're good;) & 'Dream of the Archer' is my all time favorite Heart song - I keep the Little Queen LP displayed on my wall; it's such a cool cover!
Absolutely agree. In the world of post 50s Rock, Ann is among elite company like Janis Joplin and Gracie Slick. I love Christine McVie, but her world is much softer rock. Keep an eye on Beth Hart, though.
Barracuda is one of those songs to get into this style of rock. When discovered that this song was included in Guitar Hero III, we spent whole evening playing it on repeat. After host got annoyed by continuous play of one song, we locked him in his balcony. Good times.
I hear you on that one! We irritated the bejayjays out the neighbours with Carry On my Wayward Son from GH2. That and No-One Knows. With the noise coming from the room they musty have thought there was cats fighting in the flat above. We were AWFUL lol. And that was pre-Trogdor!
Same here. I discovered them with this song on GHIII, that game got me into classic rock real good, I got obsessed with Alice Cooper thanks to School’s Out being on Guitar Hero.
Ann Wilson is one of the greatest female singers to ever live, definitely in the top few female rock and roll singers. And still kills it now that she is in her 70’s, amazing.
There are a lot of ladies who can belt it out at 28, but mounting the stage at 70 and leaving it all out there is damned special. After she reached her forties its no secret she struggled with her weight, but it never slowed her down that I've ever seen. The girls are treasures.
Worth noting: Heart was the only group endorsed by Jimmy Page to do covers of their work. He went backstage to give that endorsement, because they had done it so well live.
@@Two4Brew and god damn was that a fantastic version of it. When they lifted that false wall revealing a full choir at the end of the song it was SO good.
@@crusheverything4449 Lol. That’s a classic example of “a distinction without a difference.” The message Stella was conveying was conveyed perfectly, regardless of your pedantic distinction.
I saw her Saturday night 6/12/22. She's lost some of her upper range, but the magic is still there. I have a photo of the setlist that I got from the crew. I last saw Heart in 1976. No way to post it here.
Ann’s vocals seem to be effortless and just flow out. Just incredible. Nancy is so underrated with her vocals. Just imagine what level you have to be at just to harmonize with Ann’s voice.
Nancy actually does lead vocals on a few songs but I bet you can not name them. Their voices are that similar. Nancy is just not a belter like Ann can pump out.
What strikes me the most about Anne’s singing is that she does it’s almost effortlessly. I’ve heard many other singers cover their music but they have to work it so hard to hit those high notes. Anne has the power and technique to deliver it so smoothly! Love love love it!
I'm willing to bet she did a lot of hard work doing vocal strength exercises on a regular cadence that helped make it look and sound effortless. She's a pro of epic proportions. I've never heard another vocalist that could hit those high notes with so much power and yet maintain the personality of the lyric. One of kind. It's such a shame that her and Nancy aren't getting along. Maybe that changed and I haven't heard, but last time I checked, they no longer play and sing music together.
Ann’s husband knocked around one of Nancy’s boys, that caused a split for awhile. I saw them in Dallas I think three years ago for my birthday on 8/31, but have seen Ann is performing alone lately, so guess they didn’t enjoy the getting back together? They sounded just as good, had Joan Jett & the Blackhearts as an opener, great show.
Ann Wilson has always been one of my favorite vocalists. Really enjoyed her in the Led Zeppelin tribute concert with her singing "Stairway to Heaven" with John Bonham's son playing drums. She was amazing...
"Crazy On You", "Magic Man", "Straight On", "Even It Up" are all worth checking out & analyzing. Barracuda definitely has one of the greatest riffs ever.
Listen to the voice! Ignore the video. This is the album/studio version played over an almost (but not quite) synchronous live performance. Ann knew how to take her voice up to the edge of a shriek and stop. Very powerful. Doesn't hurt the performance that they created this song in a rage. Emotional sincerity matters.
Yes absolutely bagoquarks. If you want to hear what seems to be the actual audio: HEART Barracuda - Live, 1977 ruclips.net/video/sfX-BSO-Q8M/видео.html
hard to argue against that. I mean Linda Rondstadt is up there. she didn't do that much hard rock but could certainly belt it out, she's literally more of an opera singer though.
That trippy alien sound at the end of Barracuda is guitarist Roger Fisher touching a 1/4" guitar lead to the vacuum tubes at the back of his amplifier, on a separately recorded track. This is according to his interview in Guitar Player magazine back in 1977. Heart rules!
I saw them live in 2010. It was the most amazing concert I'd ever seen - a masterclass in "how it's done". I brought a friend who had never been to a rock concert before, and she was blown away. "I felt like my heart was going to explode..." she said, her eyes wide. Yeah. That was about right. Ann was 60, and brought down the fires of Heaven like the vocal goddess she is. Nancy was 56, and shredding the fabric of space/time like the guitar goddess she is. Church was in session, and there were no unbelievers. Truly awe inspiring... :)
Interesting note about Heart, most younger people miss. At the time they hit, everyone was trying to sound like The Eagles. Record companies were looking for the next Eagles. Heart was a stand out. They had their own sound. They were a singular breath of fresh air. In the context of the period, they were bold and unique.
In the mid 70s? I do believe Led Zeppelin were at their peak. I’m sure that record companies were looking for the next Eagles but I can’t believe they were blind to any other good band.
Yeah, you can't go wrong with Heart. Those Wilson sisters are a true treasure. The 1st Ladies of Rock. There is a video of them doing "Alone" unplugged that just sends chills down my spine. I have been listening to them since the early days, and I never grow weary of them.
I still remember hearing this song for the first time and being immediately hooked in by that guitar growl. And then she started singing 😯! As someone who struggles to outwardly express anger, this song is one that helps me kind of 'decompress'. I tend to imagine her singing it with a contemptuous lip curl and/or one sardonic eyebrow cocked. It's such a powerful performance and intensely satisfying.
I can't get enough of this channel and choice of voices she analyzes. I feel her joy when she discusses this. I've seen copycat channels that seem to follow this show down to the bands and songs exactly and they just do not compete. Great stuff here.
No male/female categories here...Ann is one of the greatest rock singers ever...Period. She was in the 70's and now. Go have a watch to see her her kill it singing "Alone" Live at the Royal Philharmonic - At age 60 at the time
@@zahira_rania No. Stevie did some memorable work, but she wrote songs for her vocal range, which was limited, and in recent years it has dropped at least a 3rd and her range has diminished further.

I seen this tour when they did Portland Oregon. About 10 feet from the stage, and I fell in love with Ann Wilson during this song. The whole group was amazing!
I saw them at Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles in 1977 I was speechless, I had never heard women sing like this, and I've been a big fan ever since.
How she takes her anger, turns it into a song, then they put it to such amazing music blows my mind. Saw this band in concert in 1977. They earned a lifetime fan. You see her sassy attitude in this song.
It's cool to watch someone discover a song and a vocal performance we've been talking about for 40 + years...you kind of get to re-live the experience.
Don't sleep on Nancy she is an amazing singer and guitarist in her own right. And without her they wouldn't have had their first #1 hit with "These Dreams". Yep, took all the way until 1986 for them to reach #1, even with all the hits before this (they only broke into the top 40). I would definitely love to hear you react to that song and Nancy's style of singing.
she was hanging out with the Alice in chains guys after Layne's death. They were amazed .nicknamed her hands of stone because she could play acoustic all night long.
The main riff reminds me of a horse galloping. Very cool. And Ann Wilson is an Incredible vocalist. Many female rock vocalists have mentioned her as an inspiration!
@@sngrytr1 A Gallop Rhythm is NOT a Triplet. A gallop is a beat or rhythm typically used in traditional heavy metal songs. It is created by playing an eighth note followed by two sixteenth notes, usually on rhythm guitar, drums, or bass. Second, a gallop rhythm is a three-note rhythm, which means that there are three notes (or chords) on each beat of the bar. A common misconception is that because of this, a gallop rhythm is the same as a triplet.
I always think of this family of riffs as "galloping", because they engender a strong feeling of motion and possibly hoofbeats. The backing riff in Tears for Fears "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" is similar in that regard... they both just make you want to travel forwards to wherever.
Ann Wilson is one of the top rock vocalists of all time. She is up there with Freddie Mercury, Rob Halford. Top notch. The later career Heart albums are just as killer as the early albums are; Ann's voice gains so much rich character as she gets older. But back in the 1970's she was a slayer, her belting was out planting Robert Plant!
I dunno about "out belting". She had an awesome voice, and certainly had a powerful voice that could reach higher than he could, although he had an amazing range for a bloke. But power? You've listened to "Immigrant Song", right?
Arguably the best female rock vocalist ever, of all time. The power, the beauty, and the character of THAT voice. It just tears through like a rocket ship!
@@redrick8900Think the point was there weren't many women rockers. Heart was before Benatar.. I had Heart albums in high school, 70's. Pat Benatar's first hit the John Cougar/Mellancamp penned " I want a lover that won't drive me crazy" was I believe in 1980.
Anne and Nancy Wilson were absolutely amazing. I'll never forget seeing them perform in concert. For me, Dog and Butterfly was the most memorable pieces they did, but entirely for personal reasons.
One of the most awesome parts to this song is that you have every instrument galloping along with each other. It's like holding on to wild horses. I'll bet a lot of speeding tickets were provoked by this song.
I spent some time with their early engineer, all his settings are based around her voice. Whatever he did to her voice he did to the other tracks. So it is more than just in performance but tone as well.
Would love to see you analyze "Straight On". Lots of harmonics with her sister Nancy. I love listening to the two of them together. It's amazing how similar their voices are.
I would highly recommend reacting to Heart's live performance of "Crazy on You" on the Midnight Special. There's a lot for you to see in her voice in that performance!
I love how Ann's vocals are almost acting out her feelings. For example, the very beginning the "So!" has that barging into room feel. And the second chorus Ann sings "Barracuda" like she is introducing something like Ladies and gentlemen....Barracuda.
I saw Heart live in 1980. Ann was still in her prime and she was just pitch perfect with eargasmic power and vocal chops for days. She was the real deal, no FX tricks, auto tune BS of today.
What I just typed - absolutely the studio version! Saw them at Empire Stadium in Vancouver and I think in Seattle once as well - don’t remember that concert as well….…. 😅
I struggle to listen to a lot of classic rock these days because, as a genre, it's been so overplayed in my life.... but this band is one of the exceptions that never gets old to me. Ann's gotta be one of the most engaging frontpeople in the genre. Sounds great and full of attitude on stage. Wish I'd been alive to see them at their prime.
I first heard this song as a young kid, since I was born in 1967. Her voice just gave me goosebumps hearing this early version again. One of my favorite rhythm parts to play on the guitar, the intro. Crazy on you is awesome, as others have already noted. Nancy's acoustic guitar intro to that is nothing short of amazing.
Born in 67 too and was also captivated by it when I first heard it around 77. Annoyed the heck out of the local radio station with relentless phone in requests for this!!😄
There’s someone in my department at work named Ann Wilson. I can’t ever see her name without this song going through my head. Heart is definitely in my top five bands.
Elizabeth, you need to hear her live NOW! Changes in the voice, but still so good. She is, for me, the all-time greatest voice in rock. 💜 Love hearing your analysis of the Queen!
Ann Wilson is undoubtedly one of the greatest vocalist in Rock History. I am rather surprised you havent yet done any Janis Joplin. I would absolutely be intrigued to see your reaction to some Janis Joplin.
I agree to Janis & I'd also like her to react to many other bands & singers. People like Tracy Chapman, The Cranberries singer=Delores O'Riordan, Sinead O'Conner, Joan Jett, Blondie, Cyndi Lauper, Tori Amos, Stevie Nicks, Dusty Springfield etc.
I’d love to see your take on Heart’s “Crazy On You” specifically, one in which Nancy does the intro on acoustic guitar. I love your analysis of songs I grew up with. It allows me to experience them again as if for the first time by seeing through your eyes. Great job! Also, please do ELO’s “Rockaria”. Thank you.
Thanks for the back story. I never knew this about the song. Ann is by far the best vocalist of this era and of course the harmonies with Nancy are amazing. Still love listening to Ann today.
Keep in mind, this is a video performance over the studio track. One of the greatest voices in rock and this is an all time classic rock jam! The Wilson sisters are pure magic!
I would love to see/hear the actual performance that the studio track was laid over in this video. From a perspective standpoint, I still flash back to my childhood every time I hear this, when this song was NEW, listening to it on the radio, laying on the living room floor, with only the lights of the radio illuminating the immediate area. God help me, but I truly miss those days.
@@brovold72 The reaction video is the officially released music video with the studio recording dubbed on top of the video from an earlier live performance. They had to put something over the studio audio and this was a damn fine performance. Probably saved dollars also. You can hear the original performance here ruclips.net/video/sfX-BSO-Q8M/видео.html . The sound is rawer and the guitar solos much dirtier (and no alien attack), but Ann is still perfect. You also get to hear the adlib extra words and timing changes she makes where the official video loses sync. Given the technology of day, I'm gobsmacked they got the sync even close.
I saw Heart on their first tour. I forgot who they opened for but we weren’t expecting much from them. We’ll they ‘smoked’ the show, it was almost embarrassing getting through the main act while everyone was still roaring and calling for Heart! They are some magic girls!
Heart is one of the great rock bands that started in the 70's. Ann Wilson has one of the most powerful female voices. And her sister Nancy can play a mean guitar. They have had so many great hits such as "Magic Man", "Crazy on You", "What About Love", "Never", "Dog & Butterfly", "These Dreams" & "Alone". In 2012 Ann & Nancy performed at the Kennedy Center Honors in a tribute to Led Zeppelin doing their classic song "Stairway To Heaven".
"These Dreams" features Nancy Wilson on Lead Vocal. The title song off their first album, "Dreamboat Annie" is gentle pastoral song. The other song off that album "Sing Child" has wild opening riff and a bit of an R&B feel. It also features Anne and Nancy's harmonies. And Anne plays the flute,
This song is one of the first rock songs I ever heard that I can identify by name to this day. My parents listened exclusively to classical music when I was a kid. My Mom had been a music major in college. If pop, rock, or other contemporary music came on TV, she would usually deride it as 'junk'. About the most avant garde we got in those days was an 8-track tape of Wendy Carlos' Moog synthesizer recordings of "Switched on Bach". I wore that tape out. One day I was playing around with my Dad's radio, and started tuning up and down the FM dial. At one point, I tuned to a station just in time to hear the opening chords of 'Barracuda' and I was riveted. I felt like maybe I shouldn't be as thrilled by this song as I was. But I was. In retrospect, I'm convinced that my early exposure to Mozart, and Beethoven, and Schubert, and recordings of Andrés Segovia enhanced my enjoyment of the likes of Heart, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Kansas, and The Doors. So while Mom could have turned down her disdain a notch or three, the musicality, the dynamic range, the variation of time signature, the diversity of instrumentation in what I had been exposed to as a kid prepared me to appreciate when Heart or Kansas or Zeppelin goes into 7 or 12 for a few bars, or Pink Floyd makes a big part of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" a waltz. The fact that I can point back to that one lazy summer afternoon, and the eye-opening jolt this song gave me means that 'Barracuda' will always have special importance to me.
I am extremely familiar with the 3/4 sections of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" but it had never occurred to me to dance them as a waltz. Well never too old etc.

For me, one of the best they put out. Love this one, only a dream could I sing like she does.
I agree that "Crazy on you" is the song to really listen to
It's a synthesizer
Yes! Dream of the Archer is their best faux Zeppelin!
Ann Wilson is a world-class, generational vocalist. I grew up on this music, and it still rocks me every time!
Awesome band and SISTERS. Loved them since the first time I heard them and I'm 74years old
Ann Wilson is one of the greatest female singers to ever live, definitely in the top few female rock and roll singers.
Great comment, but I'd like to rephrase...she's "...one of the greatest rock singers to ever live".
The 70s rocked and those of us in our 70s were lucky to live it...and we still rock!!
Yes...There is no one like her. She is an incredible Force of Nature...🥰🤩🤘
@@nancyskomars1230 Right with you there!
Worth noting:
Heart was the only group endorsed by Jimmy Page to do covers of their work. He went backstage to give that endorsement, because they had done it so well live.
I have read that Robert Plant told them that Heart's rendition of "Stairway" was the only one he truly enjoyed.
@@Two4Brew and god damn was that a fantastic version of it. When they lifted that false wall revealing a full choir at the end of the song it was SO good.

Anne Wilson is a living legend. One of the best vocalists ever. And ageing like a fine wine. Absolutely admire her.
Please admire her enough to spell her name correctly. It’s Ann.

So true. 💜🪽
Nancy actually does lead vocals on a few songs but I bet you can not name them. Their voices are that similar. Nancy is just not a belter like Ann can pump out.
She’s the female Dio to me. What an amazing singer. I could not argue with any one who said she’s the best rock singer ever.
..."the female Dio"...
That's a great observation as I see it - nice. 🤘
For me Robert Plant is the best rock vocalist but I love Ann Wilson and PJ Harvey
Dio is the Male Ann Wilson 😂
@@marshalbaek5580 That's sad! I was wondering why on Nancy's facebook page she wished Anne Happy Birthday and "I really miss you".
Absolutely seamless and effortless mmmmmmm she’s INCREDIBLE!!!!
Except for Floor Jansen.
Ann Wilson deserves every accolade she's been given. Legendary.
Ann Wilson has always been one of my favorite vocalists. Really enjoyed her in the Led Zeppelin tribute concert with her singing "Stairway to Heaven" with John Bonham's son playing drums. She was amazing...
Word!
"Crazy On You", "Magic Man", "Straight On", "Even It Up" are all worth checking out & analyzing. Barracuda definitely has one of the greatest riffs ever.
You mention four great songs. "Even it Up" has distinct rhythmic complexity. In my view this was Heart aspiring to rhythmic tenor.
When "Magic Man" comes on it turns up.
I'm an idiot. It seems I am incapable of counting to five.
Right on!! Straight On is such a great tune.
Yes! Every single one of those songs is iconic.
Ann Wilson's voice will never not give me chills. One of the greatest ever rock singers.
Ann has the best rock voice of all time. It's absolutely extraordinary.
I think she's more like a very very close second to Pat Benatar
Listen to the voice! Ignore the video. This is the album/studio version played over an almost (but not quite) synchronous live performance.
Ann knew how to take her voice up to the edge of a shriek and stop. Very powerful. Doesn't hurt the performance that they created this song in a rage. Emotional sincerity matters.
Yes, thank you. The lack of synchrony is most glaring with "bara, baracuda" at 14:58 here.
Yes absolutely bagoquarks. If you want to hear what seems to be the actual audio: HEART Barracuda - Live, 1977 ruclips.net/video/sfX-BSO-Q8M/видео.html

Such a killer track, even after 45 years this rocks like nothing else
Ann Wilson is an amazing singer, another great song is “Crazy on you”. Would love to hear you do a reaction to Pat Benatar’s “Promises in the dark”.
I've been wanting Elizabeth to react to "Promises In The Dark" since the inception of her channel.
Yes ! Or anything by Pat and she is still an amazing singer to this day
Great suggestion Pat also can sing with the best rockers:)
Yes please!! Love her voice and this song !!! ❤️❤️🔥🔥
The greatest female rock singer of all times. WOW ! I get chills every time she hits that super high note.
hard to argue against that. I mean Linda Rondstadt is up there. she didn't do that much hard rock but could certainly belt it out, she's literally more of an opera singer though.
Phenomenal Band. I normally don't get caught up in G.O.A.T conversations but for my money when it comes to rock female vocalists Ann is it.
Female artist of today don't come close.
Those two sisters made some of the best rock I've ever heard.
That trippy alien sound at the end of Barracuda is guitarist Roger Fisher touching a 1/4" guitar lead to the vacuum tubes at the back of his amplifier, on a separately recorded track. This is according to his interview in Guitar Player magazine back in 1977. Heart rules!
Wow that's cool, I would have just guessed it was a synthetic sound made by some time of sound board.
I know too, and thanks posting that! Roger Fisher guitar tones are so sonic and influenced my guitar sound through my career still 🍻🎶
Eh, stolen from Jimi Hendrix, literally, he used feedback a LOT.
Now that she is broken in take her to a Foo Fighters one soon.
Interesting note about Heart, most younger people miss. At the time they hit, everyone was trying to sound like The Eagles. Record companies were looking for the next Eagles. Heart was a stand out. They had their own sound. They were a singular breath of fresh air. In the context of the period, they were bold and unique.
Yeah they went the bold route of trying to sound exactly like a little band not many people have heard of called Led Zeppelin.
And on that note - Elizabeth hasn't reacted to Eagles!

One of my favorites by them
Yeah, you got to remember, back then there was no Bonnie Riatt, etc. Pat Benatar owes her career to them. The broke the mold and in a big way.
Ann puts out enormous power and still sounds like she's not even close to her limit.
Wow, absolutely!
Her voice explodes on this song. There was no one like her. And kudos to her sister. This song is dynamite.
Ann's amazing range and technique really gave Heart a huge amount of freedom in creating the melodic line. Fantastic.
Legends. Ann. Nancy. The entire band. Did I say Ann? She just destroys. There was NO ONE like her.
Which version of the band??
Anne is a Rock Goddess. I followed them from their first album. She always sang in the higher registers, definitely soprano.
Man, I just love Ann's voice, so silky smooth and clear yet it's also hard and rock n' roll, simply amazing.

Wonderful to hear such a passionate expert analyse such a brilliant band! I wanted to be Ann Wilson when I grew up ....I still do!
Exactly what I was thinking! I’ve never analyzed a song so carefully either, just enjoyed it but then again I’m no expert!!
Nancy's acoustic intro on "Dreamboat Annie" is still one of the greatest rock intros ever recorded.
Yes, isn’t that the one where they sing alternating solos?
They are both pitch perfect.
she was hanging out with the Alice in chains guys after Layne's death. They were amazed .nicknamed her hands of stone because she could play acoustic all night long.
Ann does some brilliant backing vocals too on "These Dreams".
Ann has such a powerful voice and its incredible to hear her range! A real class act!
The main riff reminds me of a horse galloping. Very cool. And Ann Wilson is an Incredible vocalist. Many female rock vocalists have mentioned her as an inspiration!
I wonder if this riff inspired Steve Harris's gallopping bass?
The technique is literally called a gallop. You can find it in use in every genre from johnny cash to slayer
Also referred to as “triplets”
@@sngrytr1 A Gallop Rhythm is NOT a Triplet. A gallop is a beat or rhythm typically used in traditional heavy metal songs. It is created by playing an eighth note followed by two sixteenth notes, usually on rhythm guitar, drums, or bass.
Second, a gallop rhythm is a three-note rhythm, which means that there are three notes (or chords) on each beat of the bar. A common misconception is that because of this, a gallop rhythm is the same as a triplet.
@@sngrytr1 yeah it’s not a triplet at all. Different feel and rhythm entirely
I always think of this family of riffs as "galloping", because they engender a strong feeling of motion and possibly hoofbeats.
The backing riff in Tears for Fears "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" is similar in that regard... they both just make you want to travel forwards to wherever.
Iron Maiden also has many riffs that have a galloping feel. Really gets the heart pumping.
@@jerrybrown1446 Run to the Hills and The Trooper were also in my mind, for sure.

Ann's gotta be one of the most engaging frontpeople in the genre. Sounds great and full of attitude on stage. Wish I'd been alive to see them at their prime.
I would say 'classic rock' is an idiom, rather than a genre.
Her enunciation and clarity are absolutely perfect. Zero sloppiness even at a gallop.
I first heard this song as a young kid, since I was born in 1967. Her voice just gave me goosebumps hearing this early version again. One of my favorite rhythm parts to play on the guitar, the intro.
And Anne plays the flute,
@@gtrgar4561 "These Dreams" is an example of how incredible Nancy is. She had a cold on the day the vocals were recorded and still nailed it.
'Dod And Butterfly' would be a good one to do
She’s reacted to the Stairway To Heaven cover you should check it out
This song is one of the first rock songs I ever heard that I can identify by name to this day.
