What I wish for: Tangerine Dream ---> Phaedra... 38 minutes pure running time for all "You talk too much and take too many breaks" writers! 😁 Unfortunately, Miss Elizabeth will not comply with my wish, because there is no voice, no singer to analyze, only sound! But it would be nice anyway! 😊
I love watching an artist appreciate someone else's rendition of their song, or a song written in tribute to them. There is a band called First Aid Kit, two sisters from Sweden who have some of the most hauntingly beautiful vocals in music. They do a tribute to old country music, yes they are from Sweden, pay homage to the great Carter family, Johnny Cash, Gram Parsons, and of course Emmy Lou Harris in the song Emmy Lou. I would love to see you do a reaction to First Aid Kit singing their song "Emmy Lou" to Emmy Lou Harris at the Polar Music Prize. ruclips.net/video/Hi5A9OCAyIk/видео.html Cheers!
The tears in Robert Plant's eyes are the confirmation that they did a great job that night. Also Jason Bonham's glance upwards on that very last "Heaven" is especially touching.
Jason said in an interview that the reason Robert Plant was crying was because they didn't think to invite Jason until he was sitting there, and then Jason strolls out in his bowler hat.
@@kageyama8651 i’m glad you said that the first time I heard Kashmir I was mesmerized I could listen to it 20 times in a row before I get enough there is something about that song it’s incredible to my musical heart
I learned of John Bonhams death when Ann Wilson stopped Hearts show at the SIU Arena in Carbondale, Illinois. Ann said a few tearful words and then she and the band tore into an amazing, intense set of Led Zeppelin that lasted half an hour. Incredible, 10,000 people crying and rocking out to an incredible tribute from an immensely talented band.
That's respect, most play a song, then get on with it. It would have been fantastic to be a part of that. To hear them play so many Zeppelin songs, to hear her sing them.
The backstory of this makes it all the better. Heart had been doing this song as part of their live shows for several years, so they were well practiced. And then there's Jason Bonham. An amazing drummer in his own right, he's the son of the late drummer of Zepplin, who the rest of the band have known and played with hundreds of times since he was a child. Wearing his father's favorite hat. That was echoed in the chorus' outfits. The surviving members of the band had asked him to come to the ceremony and sit with them, but he said "sorry, I've got a gig that night", not letting them know he'd be on stage. They thought he was blowing them off. That's what brought the band to tears. In addition to the great performance of course. One of the best/biggest builds in a song ever.
"for several years" indeed. I saw them do it live no less than 47 years ago - in a tiny community rec center gymnasium in Courtenay, B.C. with a couple of hundred other (probably) stoned teenagers. They did about a half hour of Zeppelin covers at the end of the show. Before Dreamboat Annie was released. Bloody awesome, it was
@Wally. What a cry-baby. Waaaaah, waaaaah. 😭😭😭 Need a tissue? Me Too! Waaaah, waaaah 😭😭 Lol! Why? Old enough to have seen Zep live and didn't? Regret? Seeing the boy playing drums where the old man would have been? Knowing that we will never again experience the excellence that was Led Zeppelin?
This specific performance of Stairway to Heaven always moves me to tears. Ann Wilson has one of those voices that gives you goosebumps all over your body.
Every time I see this performance... yep. And knowing what's coming while she pauses to analyze the detail.. In my best TV advertisement voice: But wait, there's MORE !!! This is after all, THE ROCK ANTHEM of the 70's. Not to be confused with POP songs.
Fun Fact: The drummer on this performance is the son of late Zeppelin drummer, John Bonham, Jason Bonham. The bowler hat he wears is a nod to his father The surviving members are the ones in the balcony, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones
Hey Tusk, what a pleasant surprise to meet you here! I think it's the first time for me seeing you on anything other than Haley :) - you got some taste in good music obviously! Hope you're doing fine!? See you on the next Haley... :D
I've read somewhere that it's actually his dad's bowler, too. Also read (unverified), that the band invited him to join them in the balcony, standing in for his dad--and he only said that he "had a previous engagement", so seeing him there came as a surprise to them.
This is them being awarded the Kennedy Center Honors it’s one of the highest honors an artist can be awarded in the United States. Except for Trump, The President holds a reception for the inductees and they join the President in their box.
Ann and Nancy are actual fans of Led Zeppelin and were very influenced by them. The way she stays true to every inflection of this song, just as Robert Plant sang it, is the ultimate mark of respect. As great as she is, she knows it's not about her and doesn't do any showboating. It's beautiful. Also going on here is that Jason, the son of their late drummer John Bonham, is playing the drums. He was such a vital part of the band and their sound, that they refused to go on without him when he tragically died. I think the combination of Ann's gorgeous tribute and seeing the son of their lost friend was just too much for them, because you can clearly see their emotional reaction. ❤️
That is a great observation. She sings it almost exactly like Robert sings it. She really captures the feeling that he conveyed in the original. And she does it nearly as well as he did, which is amazing. She really captures the "spirit" and "feeling" of the words and music.
@@dbf1dware There are moments that are recording perfect to the original, sounding just like him. Others were clearly feminine voice paying perfect tribute. This is an incredible tribute.
The original band cut their teeth playing Zeppelin covers in clubs and bars. Not sure who I'm more excited for in this, Zeppelin for getting to hear them or Heart for getting to perform in front of their heroes.
There are so many things that are great about this performance, Ann and Nancy, Jason Bonham, Shane Fontayne on guitar, the Orchestra, the Choir, the bolo hats in honor of John Bonham, but for me, the greatest part of this entire performance was the joy on the faces of Led Zeppelin!!! Thank you for doing this one!
@@everychannel1025 one of you always shows up regardless of when the unity and love of music prevails. Sometimes we can be unified and music can be the liaison.
I have to disagree- Tool's performance of No Quarter or Johnny Cash' interpretation of Hurt imo are both better. This was really good though- Heart has been covering Zepplin for many, many years- and it shows. Their version of Going to California is amazing.
Plus they hate anyone covering this song because they got tired of it plus they often said everyone butchered it. Not the case here. And having Jason on drums was so.... right. I wonder if she knows that.
A brilliant performance. Something to know in advance, the drummer (Jason Bonham) is the son of Led Zep's drummer, the late John Bonham. Robert Plant HATES covers of Stairway to Heaven, but loved this one.
Yes, great cover, but has she ever reacted to Led Zeppelin performing it, or any other Led Zeppelin? Couldn't find anything by searching the channel. Hard to believe! Of course, I know the operatic rock fans mostly hold sway here ;)
So true. Man, heart just nails it. Its perfect and sometimes maybe better and that's hard to say about a Zepplin tune. Its like Ann's voice was made specifically to sing their songs though.
This is one of the greatest performances ever. Simple as that. Ann and Nancy absolutely crushed it, and the entire backing band, Jason, and both choirs were absolutely on point. I love seeing how it moved Robert to tears, and seeing the pure joy and enthusiasm from Jimmy as well, you can tell he was having such a good time. Overall just absolutely stunning work.
that note near the end on "to be a rock and not to rooooooll." Is a direct homage to Robert Plant. That's exactly what he does on the album, where he hits the note then distorts it and slips flat on purpose to then bend down to the last note of the phrase. it's a spot on rendition and it's so cool she chose to do that, as if to say "yeah I noticed that, and it was awesome, so I'm gonna do it too."
I'm glad someone else noticed that! This performance was a masterpiece. Even the slightly flat notes at the beginning add color. I absolutely LOATHE hearing Melodyne or Autotune suck the feeling out a performance.
she did do it well but, plant and paige didn't like it too well. watch plant's lips purse together and paige's eyes lose their smile even though he was smiling with his mouth. Then again Plant doesn't like anyone doing this song so it's to be expected
It was the perfect honor for Zep. They deserved it & it was delivered in spades. Yes, those tears were an even better thank you to the performers than the standing ovation. The vocals were spot on, as actual was the entire performance. Having Bonham's son as the drummer was a special touch.
@@roeddog Plant said later that he hates when someone covers 'Stairway' because they screw it up so badly, but that he loved this performance. They all congratulated Ann and Nancy afterward.
It's no accident that Heart was asked to perform at this event. In the late 70s and early 80s Heart was famous for including their cover of this song in their live sets regularly. Both bands have a long history together within this song going way back.
Mr. Le Banc you are correct. They were called "the gilrl Led Zeppelin" and they LOVED that. It was the highest compmpliment. It's cute that Our host isn't familiar with the song. During her review she loves the vocals. I kept saying out loud "Wait for It!!". Best cover (if you could call it that) the Kennedy Center knocked it out of the park! Well done. Peace.
I just love Elizabeth. She has the glee of a child and the knowledge of a seasoned expert. I also love that she uses the word 'creamy' to describe Ann's voice. It's the perfect word for it.
You missed one of the best reactions of the night. As Jason Bonham was introduced he points up at the 3 guys with his drumsticks and Robert Plant jumps up smiles and points down at him. The reason why is because Robert Plant asked him to come to the ceremony and represent his father. Jason told him hed love to but had a gig that night and couldn't get out of. The tears in Robert Plant's eyes was him thinking of his best friend John Bonham and seeing his godson playing the drum kit of his father. Also the bowler hats that the choir were wearing is a way to honor John Bonham it was John Bonham favorite hat style. Jason is wearing his dad's hat.
As a guitarist, I have heard Stairway to Heaven more times than I can count. And I'm not particularly fond of covers, but THEN.... I have not been able to hear/see this a single time without getting chills. Absolutely breath taking.
This is almost verbatim to what Robert Plant told Ann Wilson backstage after the show. He said he was not particularly fond of Stairway covers but told Ann he absolutely loved her performance that night.
I listen to this all the time. I grew up to these epic bands and songs. It takes me back to a time when I was coming of age, good music, friends and good times. By the time the last choir comes on with the bowler hats on, I'm a one woman band 😂 playing air guitar, singing as if I can carry a tune, drumming, it's just such an epic, powerful performance. I can't help myself. 😅
You'll be glad to know that Bruce Dickinson named Ann Wilson as his favourite female vocalist hands down. He said she's a remarkable folk singer and can still belt out the rock/metal songs like no other. 🤘🏻🇬🇧🖤
@@alexiserni1152 Ann is underrated in my opinion as well. She has an amazing voice. Bruce also said that she may not have the charisma of Janice Joplin but she has the talent and more. I couldn't agree more with him.
She has more than a full voice. I've been on the 1st row in front of her a few times, and you can feel the sound pressure of her voice over top of the sound system when she turns toward you. Makes the hair on your arms stand up.
I saw them at the Garden State Arts Center in NJ back in the mid 80's and Cheap Trick opened for them. I love Cheap Trick, but Heart absolutely blew them away. It was outside and their sound was so tight and just the right amount of loud. It was also a perfect weather night, It was epic. I had a friend who worked backstage and got us tickets. I'm so glad I went. One of the greats from my coming of age years. ✊️😎 It brings me right back to that time in life. I would probably go back if I could 😂 I love that Era of music.

I was in tears not only for this performance but also for the fact that Robert, Jimmy and JP were there AND Jason Bonham on the drums ❤️ This was stellar!!!!!
He and John Bonham were so close I’m sure this night was especially emotional for him. 1980 was a long time ago now but for Plant I’m sure it was a bit to deal with. My mom passed in 2006 and sometimes it feels like a million years ago and sometimes it feels like yesterday.
This is a goosebump performance by every musician in every way, iconic as the original (!), and Ann Wilson deserves all the praise she gets. But lets give Nancy her propers: can you imagine playing the opening and every bit on acoustic guitar in front of Jimmy Page and the group?! She is also awesome.
This was one of the greatest live performances ever recorded and I’m so glad you covered it and were so open about how it affected you. I cry every time I watch it.
When an artist can sing a cover of a song and bring the original singer to tears you know it’s a legendary performance. I’m very critical of Zeppelin covers as Zep are my all time favorite but Heart feels the heart of the song. Ann’s delivery is so smooth and strong. Heart gives the energy of the original. Ann Wilson is definitely one of the best female vocalist ever. Listen to some Led Zeppelin because Robert Plant’s voice is like no other and you’ll get lost in it. You may be the charismatic voice but Plant is most legendary voice in my opinion.
I dont follow both of you, its not that "legendary performance" and Anns voice may have aged better than Roberts and is really good, but still it has aged a lot and she has lost volume. I think, that Nancys guitar play was way better than Annes voice. But thats a little like pick your poison.
@@robertjanko6709 I remember at the time Robert Plant hated Stairway since so many people over the years had tired and failed at covering it but he liked their cover of it. When the original artist likes a cover of their song it says something about it. In the long run it does matter what any of us think as long as the remaining members of Zep approved of it and some fans enjoyed it. Music is about having fun and enjoying it.
@@JamminWithJer Sorry pal. I respectfully disagree. Ann has a great voice but not even in the same league as Robert Plant’s voice. Even so, it was a great cover. But nowhere near the original.
This performance gets me welling up with tears every time I hear it. The emotion in Ann's voice. The atmosphere of the performance especially with Jason on drums. And the 3 remaining members of Zep looking on, especially the concentration of Robert's face. So heavy on the emotions. 🤘🏻🇬🇧🖤
I'm sure they were thinking only two things. First, "hey, there's our boy". Then, " hey, we've never heard a cover of this song before that DIDN'T SUCK".
Drummer Jason Bonham is playing his late father's drum kit here, and is wearing John's hat. Robert Plant ,Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones didn't know he was even going to be here, let alone play.
To take it one step further, they asked Jason to join them in representing his father but he turned them down stating he had a previous engagement he couldn't miss. Playing this song was that engagement and he kept it a secret. Needless to say the guys were pleasantly surprised.
You can see Jason at the end holding in the tears before leaning in to finish with the symbols. Both hard to watch and awesome to see how much this meant to him.
Heart is able to not only replicate the musical aspects perfectly, but amplify the emotional resonance through a woman's energy. The response from the members of LZ says it all.
I thought this song could never be perfected….but Ann’s vocals are beyond perfection….and the Led members were truly and honestly impressed….they enjoyed that performance in wonder
Man, I can’t make it through this cover without getting choked up. Ann’s voice rattles my soul in the most pleasurable way possible. What an absolute legend, icon, queen 🌻
Now, listen to Zeppelin perform Stairway in "The Song Remains the Same" Robert Plant's stratospheric vocals will blow your mind and then you'll appreciate even more: Ann Wilson realized Plant perfectly and the performance is still Heart. I would have loved to have heard Nancy play the lead guitar part, but her Rhythm Guitar is equally flawless.
im gonna go check that performance out right after this I agree on saying she "realized" him on this song, its beautifully done... so much emotion and meaning in the performance
@@ewolffman Personally I was very disappointed with the Song Remains the Same, Page was completely out of it on most of the three performances that make up the film. How he played so well is a testament to him. It's viewed through rose tinted glasses now by most, but those like me who saw it first time round in 76/77 remember that it really is only worth 2/5, and it was justifiably savaged by the critics at the time.
"Rock and Roll Hall of Famers" Heart. I know the RRHOF has it's issues in who it selects, but as one of the very first hard rocking female lead bands of the '70's who can hold their own w/ bands like Zeppelin & The Who ("Dreamboat Annie" is frigging amazing album) it just _feels_ right that these ladies are recognised for how Iconic their contribution to Rock and Roll was
The RRHOF is a joke. Two words why: Iron Maiden. At this point, if they were ever elected, they should say, "Thanks, but no thanks," and go sell out a show in any stadium of their choosing, on any continent in the world. Fuck Jann Wenner. This is not a dig on Heart, I love them.
@@brianjones6210 I think there are a bunch of bands that are in the Hall of Fame but don't really take it that seriously. Iron Maiden are exactly the kind of band that wouldn't lol
SPREAD THE TRUTH the lying press cannot: THE RNRHOF is a CRIMINAL SHAM: it's a money-laundering front for Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner (a Trump-like crook, who worships coke and tweenage boys, no joke), who uses the "charitable donations" ppl make to the "non-profit" HOF, and he spends those dollars on OTHER (illegal) things, like paying the rent for Rolling Stone's offices in NYC. THAT IS WHY no one can understand why they induct ppl with ZERO TIES TO ROCK MUSIC, like Whitney Houston or most of this year's list. (I love Eminem. He has ZERO TIES TO ROCK.) JANN INDUCTS THE BIGGEST ACTS HE CAN (even if they have NO TIES to rock), and that's why he WILL NOT induct 99% of the greatest acts rock ever produced. HE MAKES MOST OF THE CASH..... via the yearly INDUCTION ceremony: $80,000 FOR EACH FLOOR TABLE. If he inducts ALL the members of a band (ex: they left out MAJOR members of Deep Purple) (and DP ONLY got in cuz Metallica raised hell!)...then he has to give more COMPLIMENTARY tickets to these rock stars and their wives and kids. You have now seen the GREATEST live tribute ever recorded. Hands down. Heart was given permission that night from Jimmy Page to play or RECORD, anything they want by Led Zeppelin. To see Robert Plant in tears, and to get a standing O from the band themselves?! Pretty powerful performance, yet still very beautiful.

When they reveal the choir in the back during the solo and everything intensifies to a crazy level and then the look on Led Zeppelin's faces...it just brings a tear to my eye every time I watch this. So emotional.
The only cover of Stairway worthy of being played at Cassell's Music. Ann and Nancy had pretty much an impossible task with the remaining Zep members in the balcony, but oh, they delivered. You can palpably feel the love, passion and reverence. Heart had already played numerous Zep covers over the years. Heck, they ushered in the Zeppelin induction in the RHoF with "Battle of Evermore" (With Nancy singing the Sandy Denny part). Sure, they can render those songs remarkably well, but on this night, would it be one for the Ages? Yep. Ann's timbre had changed over the years, but the direction it went was wholly appropriate for Zep songs. Bittersweet for Plant, who can only watch his best friend John's son Jason pound the drums like a lively doppelganger ghost for the ladies, and wonder, "Why couldn't Bonzo be here? He deserved it." Jason knew; he directed his heart bump right at Robert.
I also can’t help but wonder if, when she sings the last line and she says ‘to Heaven’, the look on Jason’s face it seems as though he’s thinking about his dad in that moment.
I’m a grown ass man and teared up the first time I heard this version. The range, power, and emotion of her vocals are so, well, powerful. Nancy is a legendary singer and this shows why.
Imagine creating one of the greatest songs and musical compositions in history. Now, imagine witnessing the gift of one of the greatest singers, accompanying by a slew of amazing musicians, and the son of John Bonham deliver one of the greatest live performances of all time. This was as much a gift as it was a thank you to Led Zeppelin for their own gift to the World. Jason's nod to his dad by looking up briefly before the end of the performance was especially moving.
Now imagine being the lead guitarist who has to go out there and play that solo in front of Jimmy Page 😳😱😳 That would have the world falling out of my ass lol. Magnificent.
This brought a huge smile to my face, not only the performance, but Elizabeth's reaction. Man, that would be stressful, even for an experienced artist, to have the actual Led Zep guys in the audience. I absolutely love Anne's voice too. This version is incredibly faithful to the original song, she nails the vocals, and Nancy nails the guitar lines. All the way down to Jason Bonham playing his dad's old Led Zep drum set. WOW!!
I recently saw an interview Ann and Nancy did with Dan Rather. When talking about this performance, both admitted to a little bit of stage fright performing Led Zeppelin's magnum opus in front of them. At cue-in, they held back a few seconds, looked at each other, took a deep breath, fist-bumped and took the stage. Damn. That took some balls...big brass ones. Then to top it off...they simply killed it. Killed it. The big grin from John Paul, the tear from Robert...and watching Jimmy rock out was just the icing on the cake...until Jason paused and looked up at his dad, and for some reason my screen gets hazy...foggy...and I gotta wipe my eyes for clarity.
Led Zeppelin has always been one of Heart's biggest influences. They almost exclusively play Zeppelin songs for the encores at their shows, so I believe Anne really wanted to give them her all when she played for them.
Bonzo's son playing drums, the hat he and the whole choir is wearing - a great salute to the late drummer of the band. That raises this whole performance even higher, through the roof.
Heart was the only choice for Robert Plant to sing this Led Zep song! This tribute to LZis so touching, and with the Led Zep band members sitting up in the third level watching their every move must have been quite unnerving for Ann & Nancy 😊. You have to go and discover the music of LZ to truly understand this tremendous honour, if you don’t know their music it will be hard to know the adoration by the millions of fans. Heart really does honour Led Zeppelin 🎸🥁❤️🔥☮️💜💎 sending greetings from BC Canada 🇨🇦
I don't beIieve anyone on earth could have done it more justice than the peopIe on the stage. The whole arrangement was a masterpiece of an already masterpiece of a song. Since I've heard it so many times, I can pick out onIy one minor fIaw that most probably didn't notice. I also grew up on Heart and Zed Zeppelin so I know some of their songs Iike the back of my hand. At around 16:18 the verse is "The piper's calling you to join him" but she must've Iost focus for a nanosecond or blanked on Piper. It happens at our age lol Otherwise I can't hear any flaws in this epic, amazing performance, one of the best ever. 💯🙌 By the end when the Iast curtains are puIIed back and the chorus with the bowler hats on starts singing, I'm a one woman band in my own kitchen 😂 singing as if I can, playing air guitar, drums the works and idc how siIIy I sound. This is one of my two favorite Kennedy Awards performances. If anyone hasn't seen Aretha Franklin singing Carole King's Natural Woman, treat yourself. It's an epic performance showing why she's a legend.
I'm still always amazed how perfectly she recreates so many of Robert Plants vocal stylizations from the album recording, while adding her own, knowing exactly when to keep to the original flow of the vocals, and when to mix it up a little. Can't think of anyone else who could successfully do a cover of stairway to heaven without something feeling missing.
I love Jason's look to the heavens at the end, as to say "this is for you, dad." I also love seeing Elizabeth get so giddy and bouncy with excitement over the song. You only get one first time listening to a song, and it's so great watching other people get introduced to something like this and being reminded of your own reaction when you first heard it.
I hate to point it out, but you made an error in assumption, Elizabeth. We don't come here JUST to listen to the music. We're here for the triple threat: your fantastically real personality, the unadulterated joy and awe in your Reactions, and the insightful analysis of the techniques of our vocal heroes. 😍🤩
Very true. We could all easily listen to the music elsewhere (and many of us probably do) without the pauses, but seeing the joy in someone's face when listening to something I've heard a million times is wonderful. Such a lovely personality and great insight into the singing too is why I watch and likely many others.
For whatever reason, this performance never fails to bring me to tears. Lovely job by not only the ridiculously talented Wilson sisters, Jason Bonham... but the whole band and choir. Wow.
As a Seattle native, I've seen Heart live several times and they covered Led Zepplin quite a bit. Nothing...NOTHING compares to Anne Wilson in her prime belting out those notes. It was so fun to watch your reaction to this since I know you are such an Anne Wilson fan.
This is honestly one of the best covers of any song ever. Time and time again I come back to it when I'm down one of those 12am RUclips holes. There's so many levels to it. John's son on the drums. Ann Wilson's vocals. The choir step change after the solo. Jimmy Page loving the solo and the emotion that unfolds from Robert Plant each time the camera pans back on him. Goosebumps every single time. is one of my favourite covers of all time. I never tire of watching it. Thanks for breaking it down.
I loved seeing the differences between how each of the members reacted too. Jimmy's geeking out hard, Robert's got all the feels, and John's just grinning and taking in the experience.
And for being such an iconic song of the 70's, it's still very fresh, but this rendition is what it is because of the orchestration, and the choir, and of course Ann Wilson's vocal performance, but most especially the chorus at the end. And from what I've read about the performance, they only had one take/ performance of it the night before this performance. Quite the production and execution of a masterpiece!!! Kudos to ALL involved!!!
The most impressive fact is Ann nailing this song at 62 years of age. John Paul Jones (bassist) on left...Robert Plant in middle...Jimmie Paige on right. They did not know Jason Bonham was going to be there, let alone wear his father's bolo hat and play on his father's drum set. Brings tears every time I see this performance😭 🔥🔥🔥❤❤❤
@@henrikpetersson3463 for sure quite young for us mortals but rock and roll singers have often blown out their voices long before 62. She sounds amazing to me.
One of the best recorded live performances of that song ever, by anyone. Not at all to take anything away from Led Zeppelin performing it. But, that is strong, moving, and a heartfelt tribute. John’s son on the drums, as the remaining three members looked on, wow 😳.
To see both Wilson sisters really let loose on vocals, check out their cover of "Battle Of Evermore", performed at the grand opening (1995) of The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. Ann gets all the praise for her voice, but Nancy is no slouch, and maybe even wins the Battle of Evermore!

A rare treat is Nancy soloing in in her lower register in their cover of Elton John's Mona Lisas & Mad Hatters honoring NYC (it was 2002...). Mistral Wind's been in the comments and that show's version is lovely, so is Alone. 20 years later Ann is still covering Led Zeppelin (Going to California - she's great but the band's so-so).
Heart's "Battle of Evermore" is totally better than the original. Love it so much. If Elizabeth analyzes a Led Zeppelin original version, I'd pick "Black Dog" or "Immigrant Song."
In late 1977 I watched Heart Live. I had never heard of this group before. They performed on stage at NAS Whidbey Island for the troops. They were fantastic! Everyone knew we were witnessing something special. This was NOT the typical performance that most of us were used to that the base booked for a Friday night entertainment. Not even close. We ALL knew these people were something special. We knew we were just witnesses to true talent. To this day, every time I listen to a Heart performance I remember that night in 1977 at NAS Whidby Island. I thought to myself, this group is way above the level of entertainment one would ever expect at any military base nightclub ever. All of us had this same feeling. When they were done performing we ALL were astounded at what we had just witnessed and we were in shock that the base had actually managed to book such talent for us. We were ALL grateful and blown away but, we still questioned, how did they manage to book this band???
Well, the Wilson sisters and Heart are from the Seattle area so geographically they're a local band to Whidbey Island but by 1977 they were already a headliner with 3 top 40 hits including Barracuda in 77. I remember they were having some legal issues with their original record company around that time so maybe that had something to do with them accepting an invite to play a local live gig while the legal sharks were fighting over their recording rights.
The looks on Page, Jones and Plant say it all. Ann Wilson can sing anything. And Nancy is so underrated as a guitarist. There's a reason why Stairway is one of the most famous songs to ever exist.
God the moment when her voice, the guitar, and the choir blend for those few seconds towards the end is amazing. Gives my whole body chills every time. Incredible performance.
It's been some time since I watched this, and right now I'm SHAKEN. I mean, shaken. I mean, there are a multitude of jokes about this song being overplayed, and still it gets me every single time. Add it to Anne's MAJESTIC voice and interpretation... The ENERGY generated by this performance is palpable! I honestly felt the moment the choir comes in like a gust of wind to the face, I swear I backed in my sit as it HIT ME! Plus, for a split second my brain fixated in the lead guitarist, as in... you're playing the solo of Stairway to Heaven IN FRONT of Jimmy Page. No pressure. Tears in Robert Plant's eyes (and mine, frankly). Anne's voice like a Force of Nature. Just fell in love with this song AGAIN... AGAIN. When you think about it, there was absolutely no other choice but Heart for this particular task. Honestly, no other voice but Anne Wilson's could deliver this.
AbsoIuteIy, I'm a diehard metal head, I grew up on Heart & Led Zep, and it just doesn't get any better than this performance. By the time the Iast curtain goes back and the choir in the bowler hats appears, I am a one woman band. 😂 Singing Iike I can carry a tune, playing air guitar, drums, you got it. Idc who's present or who can hear or see me. It's just a masterpiece that brings back so many memories. This was the theme song for our senior prom. I'm certain some of my mild hearing Ioss is due to Led Zeppelin bIasting in the cars of everyone I hung with. I regret nothing 😅✊️💯
I heard her sing this live and to say it blew me away is a major understatement....there are no words. That is all I can say. She is an incredible singer...what a voice!!!
I was never a big fan of this song until I saw this! I have no idea how many times I have played this version over and over. Watching you view this for the first time gave me the same thrill I had when I first viewed this great ensemble. Thank you for doing your analysis. After 51 years, I hear this with even fresher ears!
This is one of the greatest all-time live performances of any song ever. Also… Once you see young Robert Plant performing live, you’ll never NOT be able to pick him out of a lineup.
It was a surprise to everyone that Jason was going to play drums on this song, apparently he even took out his dad's old derby hat for the performance. What is extra special is that John Bonham was Robert Plants best friend and after his passing Robert was never the same. Plant was moved to tears this evening seeing his best friend and band mates son playing on stage with his dad's hat on. Near the end of the song Jason looked up as to say Dad this was for you! Very powerful evening for all who witnessed this. Heart is a Class Act! GREAT JOB MISS VOICE!.
I love your reactions, but let's admit that when you bring Robert Plant himself to tears, nothing else matters. The emotion she transmits go beyond any explanation. This moment is perfect for every Led Zeppelin fan.
the greatest tribute of all time, the emotional weight held up in that atmosphere, all the history behind it, the amazing performances and arrangements... spectacular
I have watched this video close to 50 times because its THAT GOOD! Watching Elizabeth''s reaction and analysis is incredible to me because Its exactly how I feel when I am so moved by a song and performance. Watching her reactions and sheer joy she gets from the music, well its like finding a long lost friend. because as a music lover sometimes people dont really "get it" as to the satisfaction and emotional nutrition that is experienced by those that do "get it". Elizabeth you are a gem and a rare and honest soul. So thank you, thank you for speaking to my soul and for expressing yourself so beautifully.
In a later interview, Nancy stated that whilst waiting to go on stage she had a slight panic attack as she realised she had to play for led zeppilin. Which for a musician of her class and experience seems ridiculous
I talked to Heart while they were backstage, Nancy was super friendly and in a great mood, but Ann seemed distant, no wonder with all the pressure that was on her
It just showed that even with her "class and experience", Nancy too realized the gravity and history of the moment. Who wouldn't be a little freaked out to play this before the very creators of the song - and one of the greatest rock bands of all time?
We just released merchandise! Check out the full line-up here: thecharismaticmerch.com
What I wish for: Tangerine Dream ---> Phaedra...
38 minutes pure running time for all "You talk too much and take too many breaks" writers! 😁
Unfortunately, Miss Elizabeth will not comply with my wish, because there is no voice, no singer to analyze, only sound! But it would be nice anyway! 😊

Amazing video!!! As great as always, by the way you should totally react to Joni Mitchell's live California performance

The tears in Robert Plant's eyes are the confirmation that they did a great job that night. Also Jason Bonham's glance upwards on that very last "Heaven" is especially touching.

They've been covering the songs since the 70s so they've had a few years of practice.
I would have loved to have been there to experience that. Thanks for sharing your memory!

That's respect, most play a song, then get on with it. It would have been fantastic to be a part of that. To hear them play so many Zeppelin songs, to hear her sing them.
Ann & Nancy are so respectful. 😊
Just, wow...

Truer words haven't ever been spoken. This was perfection to the ears, heart, and eyes.
The best performance at the Kennedy center honors…..the song in and of itself is perfect….but her vocals are hauntingly beautiful…..❤
I have heard her say several times that all she wanted to be was Zeppelin's backup singer.
And still she didn't know better than to ruin it all with a choir.
Bloody awesome, it was
Love that bit of trivia on the drummer! Thanks for sharing it!!!
Another bit of awesome trivia on this performance, if I am not mistaken, is that Jason played one of his fathers original kits for this performance.

He's also playing the same drum kit that his dad recorded Stairway...
I heard that some people used to call Heart “Led Zeppelin with tits” lmao

There are so many things that are great about this performance, Ann and Nancy, Jason Bonham, Shane Fontayne on guitar, the Orchestra, the Choir, the bolo hats in honor of John Bonham, but for me, the greatest part of this entire performance was the joy on the faces of Led Zeppelin!!!

That bit at the front of the performance is so special ❤

I dont follow both of you, its not that "legendary performance" and Anns voice may have aged better than Roberts and is really good, but still it has aged a lot and she has lost volume. I think, that Nancys guitar play was way better than Annes voice. But thats a little like pick your poison.

This performance gets me welling up with tears every time I hear it. The emotion in Ann's voice. The atmosphere of the performance especially with Jason on drums. And the 3 remaining members of Zep looking on, especially the concentration of Robert's face. So heavy on the emotions. 🤘🏻🇬🇧🖤
WRECKS me as well Russell .... totally kicks my ass every time
Every. Single. Time.
The choir was wearing the hats as well. Huge tribute to John!
You can see Jason at the end holding in the tears before leaning in to finish with the symbols. Both hard to watch and awesome to see how much this meant to him.
And at the end you also see him raising his hand to the Leds and them responding to it.
The drums are Ludwig Vistalites, in amber of course. Although Jason is a Zildjian guy, his Dad played mostly Paiste 2002s through his career.
I would have loved to have heard Nancy play the lead guitar part, but her Rhythm Guitar is equally flawless.
im gonna go check that performance out right after this
I agree on saying she "realized" him on this song, its beautifully done... so much emotion and meaning in the performance
The Wilson sisters and Jason had the best performance out of everyone else covering songs. This was epic

@@clansome interesting counterpoint... is there a performance you would recommend instead? I'm always down to watch good music being made
The shift in tempo was not because it was live. It was matching the original recording-which the band did intentionally. An outstanding performance.
Best Female (possibly any) rock vocalist in history.
"Rock and Roll Hall of Famers" Heart.
I know the RRHOF has it's issues in who it selects, but as one of the very first hard rocking female lead bands of the '70's who can hold their own w/ bands like Zeppelin & The Who ("Dreamboat Annie" is frigging amazing album) it just _feels_ right that these ladies are recognised for how Iconic their contribution to Rock and Roll was
Cheers!
SPREAD THE TRUTH the lying press cannot:
THE RNRHOF is a CRIMINAL SHAM: it's a money-laundering front for Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner (a Trump-like crook, who worships coke and tweenage boys, no joke), who uses the "charitable donations" ppl make to the "non-profit" HOF, and he spends those dollars on OTHER (illegal) things, like paying the rent for Rolling Stone's offices in NYC.
THAT IS WHY no one can understand why they induct ppl with ZERO TIES TO ROCK MUSIC, like Whitney Houston or most of this year's list. (I love Eminem. He has ZERO TIES TO ROCK.)
JANN INDUCTS THE BIGGEST ACTS HE CAN (even if they have NO TIES to rock), and that's why he WILL NOT induct 99% of the greatest acts rock ever produced.
HE MAKES MOST OF THE CASH..... via the yearly INDUCTION ceremony:
$80,000 FOR EACH FLOOR TABLE.
If he inducts ALL the members of a band (ex: they left out MAJOR members of Deep Purple) (and DP ONLY got in cuz Metallica raised hell!)...then he has to give more COMPLIMENTARY tickets to these rock stars and their wives and kids. TOTAL LOSS for cokehead Jann.
THIS is why there is no logic to who they BLOCK from going in and who they DO put in.
IT'S A A FRAUDULENT MONEY SCAM like all non-profits are.
@@brianjones6210 Preach it brother!!! Like they need RRHOF recognition. If you know anything at all about music and especially rock music you know Maiden for the legends they are. UTI
Big kudos to the audio engineer, handling all those instruments and voices and managing them so great.
Indeed! The balance is superb. And the arranger who brilliantly added the various elements to enhance every step of this journey of this classic.

Agree & back in the day, the record companies gave her so much grief about her weight. She was a knockout then & still is. Ntm, that incredible voice of hers!

Arguably the best rock and roll song ever written and arguably the best cover of the song ever!
When they reveal the choir in the back during the solo and everything intensifies to a crazy level and then the look on Led Zeppelin's faces...it just brings a tear to my eye every time I watch this. So emotional.
Every single time.
Every.single.time. No matter how many times you listen to it.
What makes this so emotionally moving to me is you can see in the faces of the original band members how much this performance means to them!
He deserved it." Jason knew; he directed his heart bump right at Robert.
this. seeing his son man the battlestation... man.
I also can’t help but wonder if, when she sings the last line and she says ‘to Heaven’, the look on Jason’s face it seems as though he’s thinking about his dad in that moment.

I have to say Heart nailed this song. Anne could have embellished with high notes but she kept to form. Just perfect.

Ann and Nancy doing Battle of Evermore is another stunning performance.
It's so moving you can't heIp it. If this song doesn't move you, you should probably make sure you stiII have a pulse. 😅
This is one of my two favorite Kennedy Awards performances. If anyone hasn't seen Aretha Franklin singing Carole King's Natural Woman, treat yourself. It's an epic performance showing why she's a legend.
Treat yourself😂
Also Adam Lambert singing for Cher
Brings a tear to the eye when Jason heart bumps and Robert returns it.
You should know this is their favorite band and have idolized led zeppelin their whole lives! This was their greatest tribute to them!!
I hate to point it out, but you made an error in assumption, Elizabeth.

Very true. We could all easily listen to the music elsewhere (and many of us probably do) without the pauses, but seeing the joy in someone's face when listening to something I've heard a million times is wonderful. Such a lovely personality and great insight into the singing too is why I watch and likely many others.

An iconic song and perhaps its most iconic performance. Thank you Ann, Nancy and the team that produced this masterpiece.
And they had to sing it, in front if the President! That would give me the heebie jeebies, right there!

It's a magnificent song and hard to sing. Imho it should have been used in the Lord of the Rings movie, with all the fantastic singers they had, imagine the harmonies.
The song is literally about the battle in Return of the King, so...
@@crhu319 No, it is not "literally" about any battle in LotR -- aside from one pinpoint reference to the Tolkien text, it is all METAPHORICAL.

Heart Alive in Seattle 2002 covering Battle of Evermore starts with just the 2 sisters acoustic - great audio.

Probably because they were originally not Canadian. They must be paying back their loyalty🤫😉
The true power of music. This song brings me to tears every time watch it.
This rendition brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. I'm no vocal coach, but Anne Wilson nails everything she has ever sung.
You nailed it! Right on...
This is one of the greatest all-time live performances of any song ever.

Once you see young Robert Plant performing live, you’ll never NOT be able to pick him out of a lineup.
In a later interview, Nancy stated that whilst waiting to go on stage she had a slight panic attack as she realised she had to play for led zeppilin. Which for a musician of her class and experience seems ridiculous
I know right!
And she delivered without showing any nerves at all
I talked to Heart while they were backstage, Nancy was super friendly and in a great mood, but Ann seemed distant, no wonder with all the pressure that was on her
It just showed that even with her "class and experience", Nancy too realized the gravity and history of the moment. Who wouldn't be a little freaked out to play this before the very creators of the song - and one of the greatest rock bands of all time?
