    Very good. I traveled along the Amazon between Manaus and Monte Alegre (just East of Santarem) for a few weeks in 2013. I was very aware of everything you show here - the soy crisis around Santarem especially. That big building along the river in Santarem has 'Cargill' printed on its roof in giant lettering, you didn't show that and I understand why. What you don't discuss is what we were told in that area especially: that the population pressure around Santarem is partially caused by the forced internal migration in the '70s, when people from poor and drought stricken NE Brazil were moved to the Amazon region 'to develop it'. But these people have no skills and no right to land. They live along these new roads and eke out an existence and they are of course eager to work on the soy farms. Anyway, just one of the many problems that this unique ecosystem faces. Thank you for a balanced insight

    As a brazillian living near the amazon (basically on the edge of the general amazonic biome) it's such a shame that my government has allowed so many unregulated and unrelenting deforestation of this great place. And such precarization led to the giant fires in 2019 dry season. My state is the state that cuts down most area in the amazon per day. And its so sad because it displaces indiginous people from where they have lived for generations, destroys the habitat for animals and plants all for the sake of such weak profit. Its not even only for wood, its to make area for cattle production 😠 and the stupid men don't realize that if they destroy the amazon, Brazilian center and southeast will lose so much of rain it will become like a desert almost. Not to mention the overall planet. And our minister of Environment Ricardo Salles does basically the opposite of protecting the environment lol. The amount of corruption in this governet is enfuriating. Our politicians are basically puppets for the giant plantations and woodcutting companies so that they can keep exploring the amazon in a bad way. It makes me shameful for being brazillian. Hopefukly my generation can stop this madness and give theost beautiful forest ever time to heal

      @@bradleysmith9431 Thats a pretty common argument for economic liberalization, however at least in the case of the soy, it is nearly all export and certainly net export. Also the profit from said export is hardly going to the citizens, in fact didn't it keep saying how people's lives were destroyed when their forests were obliterated? That wasn't really coherent, but I am trying to say that the "natives" are not those who stand to benefit from export. More like Cargill.

      We dont know that. Where do you think most of them got their clothes from? And when the women talks about ordering another house built, who do you think coordinated that effort? What does she mean ordered? And as far as there always being child patients at the doctor's office I would suggest they start teaching them birth control or to start dating dolphins like that one chick. Lol. Also ask that lady selling herbs in her market if that product she was selling for men's hard ons would clean her filthy shirt? Oink Oink. Scratch Scratch. Lol. I think people would probably be surprised to find most of these so called simple peoples are living on charity. Charity from who? Charity from the same so called sick society that you or I might like to criticize. Lol. Dont kid yourself. And when the lady was showing you her garden of tomatoes etc again dont kid yourself. In her cupboard you will probably find an assortment of canned goods like alphagetti . LOL. Poverty sucks and while most of us in 1st world countries love and appreciate Nature, wildlife and beauty the truth is we have a tendency to exaggerate injustices, exaggerate environmental crisis, over glorify simple peoples lifestyles and convince ourselves we are part of the Evil empire or something while we through a camera lens look at the 3rd world. This kind of mindset seems to be projected from immaturity, the emotional and in many cases just plain failures and even from spoiled twits who grew up with everything but love handed to them. Ohhhh those rebels. Whatever. Dont jump to conclusions. Keep an open mind and experience life there to form a real opinion. Your assessment is a nice one but I'm not sure this film demonstrates this . Go live there. Lol . They might greet you with a fresh change of donated welfare clothes . But I doubt it. I have lived among the poor and indigenous. There is nothing wholesome or glorious about it. Lol. It's a ridiculous ignorant political imbalance of discernment we find ourselves living in the free world these days.

      Nah but I have been to/ down many noteworthy rivers/ spring runs/ places in my notable home state of FL. Places still much bigger/ grander than myself, much to learn from nature. Can't say I know the amazon, but some things here do seem similar. The grander rivers of Florida (no not all of it is overdeveloped, yet at least. Some regions may be spared/ remain sparsely populated/ largely rural) are all pretty under threat. So there's blessings and curses with knowing, exploring and Loving these rivers in this doomed selfish human-centered world. Idk if I could handle the decline of the Amazon (already depressing enough knowing the grandest, most biodiverse wild remote river is in decline, let alone Antartica cannot be spared from being ruined by tourism impacts apparently-- not even sure whether to laugh or cry over that...) Anyways, yep. The grandest most pristine river in FL beloved by many has to be the Suwannee (some love the longest- St. John's river, but many boats on it, Jacksonville at the mouth/ very trashy, sturgeon there were killed out... still Loads of gators, good fishing, but it's largest tributary is still dammed somehow-- speaking of which that may be the 2nd or 3rd most beloved river in FL- the Ocklawaha. Which still has a pointless dam for Whatever reason. FL politicians don't care to fix it/ Putnam county is too poor. I don't care as much as I use to, too far from me for what it's worth it feels, most of the time. Nice jungle-like free-flowing river on some sections, but if the Ocklawaha's largest spring fed-river tributary (silver springs/ river) cannot be saved from overpumping/ nutrient increasing what difference is dismantling the dam going to do besides allow more fish/ manatee migrations and prevent a few springs from being drowned... anyways the Suwannee is pretty much the only major near pristine river remotely near mainland FL that has no dams, lots of springs, unspoiled on many levels. But still dying from too much agriculture and dairy presence, 1 phosphate mine (uses Tons of water daily) over time. Amazing in a way it is killing the wild untameable river, along with maybe some increased suburbanization here and there... but yeah, just keep in mind, blessings and curses. The closer you get to anything, the more you realized how doomed/ messed up current trends are. Highly reccomend staying at arm's length, have a variety of interests in life, Don't stake your sanity in matters Largely out of your control (sometimes we cannot help it. Such is Love/ life sometimes.... just sayin' in general, if you can help it xD... and Don't move to FL. I'm not just saying that because I'm a native to Tampa area and nearly unaffordable/ ruined almost by too much traffic, etc. It's overhyped and Not a paradise. Anyways, just had to slip that in. Gorgeous place to visit, meh place to live in unless you must...

    Brazil is running into the problem that as more of the rainforest is converted into cattle pasture rainfall goes down and hydroelectric power can't be generated. Fortunately that should slow way down as Luna takes over. A further problem is channels get created by water buffalo trails which quicken the draining of wetlands. The good news is they have found secondary jungle growth quickly returns to biodiversity if its allowed.

    Can someone explain to me how we know the Amazon River has a larger variety of fish than the Atlantic Ocean? I'm not claiming to be smart or anything but how do we know all the species of fish in Atlantic Ocean without exploring the majority of it? Thanks!

      Los océanos han sido explorados, por eso se afirma eso. La Amazonia es probablemente la región mas biodiversa del planeta, es muy antigua, por ello es que la fauna y la flora ha tenido tiempo de diversificarse tanto. Se dice que en un solo árbol pueden hallarse mas especies de hormigas que en todo Inglaterra, por poner un ejemplo.

    • @Dman9fp
      @Dman9fp Год назад

      We know open oceans have on average Much Lower biodiversity. More pressures for fish to grow faster, nowhere to hide. Basically ecological deserts, where most of the ocean is. Most biodiversity & biomass in the oceans are around reefs or upwelling sites, which of course are under threat/ collapsing as well, last I heard. Not impossible, just unlikely, given man's present knowledge from already very ambitious voyages & discoveries

    18:00 minor correction, capitalism is (to blame that is) -
    don't blame the river for people living in poverty not having fresh water. It's the system that suffocates us from the inside out that is to blame (and the people upholding it)
