I worked in a Chrome plate shop for years, it's a nasty process that goes through several acid etching and polishing steps. Chrome adds a significant amount of weight and if you use the wrong brake pads, will wear off the wheel. Every part I plated for my bike eventually folded, bent or broke. Which is strange because we mainly plated factory parts for Harley Davidson. I never had problems with parts I bought plated, but parts I stripped paint off and then plated would always fail... I still dig chrome, I'm just warning the custom and restoration guys about potential failure.
Really ? Obviously Garibay your not a “golfer” lol Not the literal product , is a terrible toxic stuff , is the best Finnish on certain bike parts ie rims
I’m not sure if you know the answer to this however I have been wondering cus I’m wanting to paint my rim black, it’s anodized silver aka polished or so they call it, I’m wondering if I can just sand it immediately and then paint it? or should I use paint stripper? would love an answer, thanks
@@agdvideo1715 likely you'd sand it ohave them lightly sandblasted.. you could also try scuff pads, but you will be prepping the wheels for days We use to remove anodizing with oven cleaner also. Maybe google how to remove anodizing and go from there.. What I can say is the better you prep, the better the results.. also we have an oven for baking paint on, makes a difference in durability and appearance.. Also check and see how much your local powder coater would charge, and what they expect for prep... may surprise you how affordable that can be,and that's probably the most durable coating you can go to

I don’t have white mags but I got some old school skyway mags that are black and if y’all throw in some tips to get them a deep black look that would be dope. Keep the vids coming!
Get em they're good rims powder coated parts are longer lasting then painted or anodized rims I have powder coated 3 stage rims and I've had these rims for 3 years and they have not faded or lost color I run brakes with clear Kool stop supra 2 pads and these pads stop really good and don't fade rims or scratch them unless you have dust or debris on the pads or rims
Chrome plated Hutch seat clamps would always crack with hundreds of cracks. Stupid design, bead polishing would have worked perfectly, and never cracked.
Hey Alf love the video, as far as restoring the old school mags go you, if they are white as I saw in the other video, you can get volume 50 hair bleech from a hairdressing salon and then i'm pretty sure you put them in a clear plastic bag and leave them in the sun for about a day and they turn out alright. Also what I did with my tuffs as the weren't too old to get rid of the brake marks I got sandpaper and wet it and started sanding the rim amd went around it, it took alot of time but it turned out mint, just have to make sure the closer you get to the surface of the ogk wheel through the muck you have to go to a higher grit sandpaper to not damage the wheel
Cerakote. Electrically applied ceramic coating. Mostly used on guns, as a very wear resistant, rust proof coating. It is also extremely thin, so machining isn't affected as far as size of parts fitting together. Not used on bikes or parts.....yet :D
Back in the day, everyone ran chrome rims for improved braking but these days, I mainly see black rims. Personally, I run anodized orange BSD XLT rims and my brakes work well so long as there isn't any dust on my rims.
Nothing has better paint than my 97 gt performer (black and green marble) The chunky metallic flake paint on my ‘23 BK team signature IS nice, but the best paint was on them mid school freestyle bikes

You guys should do a video on spokes if you haven't already... I got both my dad and uncles bikes. My dads bike is a blue hoffman TOJ (I believe thats what its called) with intertwined spokes in the back which I really like, except its weight. My uncles bike is a Morales Flatland (I also believe this is what its called although I could be wrong) with an 18 inch tt. I think they are pretty cool and I've been told they are worth a lot too.
I thought Odyssey did a hard anodize to all their rims…or is that just on the black? I used to work for the distributor and when I ran brakes the black would not come off from the brake pads. Also what’s rust proof black? Is it the same as ED black?
The White Mag Wheels: Have you guys tried Retro Bright, It's what old nerds do to there retro PC's. All those beige computers back in the 80's and 90's would darken over time and look really bad, so guys like "The 8-bit Guy" would use Retro Bright and the leave it out in the sun for a day, and it would bring back somewhat close to the original color. Also, I guess Retro Bright is basically peroxide, water and UV light.
What kind of spray paint do u recomend for a DIY paint job. I heard 3m or Dupont r good. But u have any specific paint n clear coat? N how many coats of each? Luv the vids keep em rollin
Thanks man! DuPont is solid, it’s more about the prep work than the brand. Strip the paint, primer, paint it with 2 coats and clear coat it a few hours lately
There is a sorta kind of white anodizing. They do it on Motherboard heatsinks. It's not completely white but it's close enough to look white (in context of contrast) even though it's more of a very light grey.
I always used chromed rims because of brakes. Recently I changed to some black gsports and I have to say i'm very surprised by how well they brake, even with regular pads
I run Gsport birdcage rims powder coated with 3 stage base flake then highlight flake with a heavy clear and I've ran these rims with Kool stop clear supra 2 pads and they haven't faded or got scratched I keep my rims clean I wipe the rim and pads before riding and after riding And if brake pad residue builds up I get a plastic blade or tooth brush and scrub the rim and it cleans it off to prevent getting lil debris that may scratch your rims over time when using brakes btw using the kool stop clear pads those pads are proven too improve brake feel and prevent rim fade or discoloration

about the white... u can get anodized white, but it be hella expensive. got a alloy keyboard case anodized white n it looks freakin good but costed 200 bucks while the other colors anodized for same product where like 100 bucks.. just saying it's out there
80's we used Vaseline to shine our plastic mags. If there scratched lightly or stained lightly you can take FINE grit sand paper and buff it ever so gently LOL then wax it back up.
A key thing to rims is using the correct pads for them And powder coat isn't paint it's way far from it You charge the item that holds charge then you spray the item with the powder that attaches itself to things that hold charge
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. John 3:16, 17.
Get a small paint brush and brush salon 40 or salon 50 if u can get it on the mags real thick and wrap them with cling wrap. Then leave out in the sun for 3-4 hours each side and flip over and repeat. Dont forgot to cover the wheel hubs with tape too. Also removing the axles helps alot too. Keep trying till they are as white as you want them.
Powder coat stops way better than paint anodized finishes I've gotten my rims powder coated with a three stage base sparked highlight sparkle then a heavy clear finish Haven't had any brake issue brake fade or rim fade from using brakes I use clear supra 2 brake pads
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. John 3:16, 17
I'd disagree and say I think powdercoating is better than paint because it's baked on.. normal paint would have to be weaker hence why they powder coat so much industrial stuff, such as engine parts. Which like a powdercoated manifold would be able to resist high heats hence you would expect even if not abit better from powdercoated rims.. I beleive anyway
Phu! ! Goddammit!! They don't chrome stems bc you can't chrome aluminum. Powder coating is plastic powder sprayed on then cooked solid! Clear coat is PAINT with no pigment!! Fuck!
