one thing he didn't mention was that the inbound spoke always goes under the outbound spoke AKA the down spoke goes under the up spoke! if you look closely he laces the wheel exactly like I explained
💯🙌🏻
is this right? i just did a set using this method and the way you describe it, its would be 3x all under crosses. Down spoke over up makes it under under over counting from the inward Jbend outward. I always thought you would want spoke contact for a stiffer wheel.
Not always! Maybe for strength, but Schwinn didn’t cross under even on prewar wheels.
Corona Califas checking I. Showing love !
His down spoke goes over the up spokes . Wymmmm
Questions:
1: does this apply to 36H wheels?
2: what would you suggest for lacing a hub that has a dishing offset?
3: what would you got lacing up a hub motor?
The easiest way to lace a wheel is to pay someone else to do it! ;) It took me SOOOOOOOOOO damn long to finally do my first successful 3x and 4x wheels properly.
Also.... I have the same exact '87 GT performer, just in all chrome. Found it (by painfully landing on it) while playing on a ropeswing in the river that runs through my neighborhood half buried in the sand in like 2007 and brought her back to life! I asked the guy who technically owned the house where the rope swing was if I could take it and he basically said "Wow, now you kids take garbage away for free, and even underwater?! It's all yours, buddy!"
Awesome vid, helped me out a lot. I have a question, can I use a 26 inch hub and put it in a 20” rim? Obviously with shorter spokes
Hubs aren't rim specific other then spoke count. If it's 36 spoke hub it can be used with any 36 spoke rim. However if you're trying to use an mtb hub on bmx double check the spacing as well.
@@bmxriderforlife1234 thanks!
@@AviaryAviles159 no worries if you need any help just ask.
Corona califas 🚲
Why are all of my nipples hanging out of the rim like I have everything centered and squared I did this wheel 4 times I still can’t get the nipple to just stay in and down in the rim they just poke out of the holes I don’t get it
This is probably the best bmx channel on the tube,,no shit!
I am an auto body tech have been my entire life! That being said I love watching guys with skills and a trade like that showing and helping people out ❤ showing the right way! And being entertaining as well ,, I may just get box bike because of channels like this Rad BMx ,, couple others! I grew up in 80s 90s ! Got sub and viewer out of this guy! Great video,,,I can’t give enough good vibes to this bike shop and channel! ❤❤🤘🏻🤩😎👍🤪😉
You made our day brother!! Thank you for the kind words
I am building my first set of wheels in 49 years next week. I have watched a ton of videos. This was probably one of the better understood instructions. Gosh, thanks guys.
Let us know how it turns out! Best of luck, and thanks for the support!
Dude! You da MAN! I'm 67 years old and spent my life working with tools and repairing equipment, but had never laced a wheel before. I must have watched a half dozen how to videos without success. Finally, after watching yours, I was successfully able to lace my wheel! Thanks!
Hilarious..just turned 67 today..im lacing my first wheel
For everyone asking about How To True:

Health is wealth and knowledge is power.
Y’all out here giving an arsenal of information for the community. Definitely like this vid and share the knowledge. We all have 2-4 wheels and some spokes
Lightning Bolt is really popular in Japan. I bought my boy a couple the last time I went.
Just wanted to say that I hope you guys make a video in how to choose the right spoke size or it the spoke size matters and if there’s any difference or benefit In having a more larger or shorter spoke size or idk if y’all made one video already lol
I dig the Lightning Bolt t shirt! That's O.G. as fuck!
Omg thank you. I could never figure out the 3 cross and you made it easy. Thank you for saving me 200 bucks
how do yu decide on which spoke goes under the other when crossing? Does it remain consistent? is there a real reason to figure offset or will it just center itself and that is good?
the first one goes on top, the second on bottom.
@@cyberlingbot3d896 so, whichever you chose 1 or 6, then follow that sequence? Thanks!
Can one of your episodes talk about spokes and how to pick, measure and cut spokes to the right size for hubs that have a high flange side and a low flange side?
Use a calculator. You gotta know trig to measure spokes. Every time mfg. Publishes ERD and a basic caliper to measure your hub and chuck all that info into a spoke calculator. I use 3 different calculators to make sure I have the right length
You should do me a small fav and do a straight lace video for me it'll be as helpful as it is for me subscribing to you thanks man I need this
I’ll see what I can do
Great video! Of all the ones I’ve watched on how to do this, this is by far the easiest I’ve seen! Two questions though.
1. When crossing, how are you crossing? Does that 6th spoke go over or under the other?
2. Also, when doing the drive side, is the spokes shorter? I’ve seen in some videos they say you need shorter spokes for the drive side because the flange is bigger? I’m totally new to building wheels but I really want to try it!
Phu's hip thrusts earned this vid a like.. gonna save this jammie for when i finally pull the trigger on some Ti spokes.. much love!
Would this work for rear hubs that need diff size spokes lengths?
Yes! You just need to cross one side more than the other. 3 cross one 4 cross the other
Going to try to lace up some old Suzue high flange hubs to some Sun Envy rims 3X. Just bought the spokes, hope I don't botch it, knowing myself I'll screw something up the first try.😂 Hope I even ordered the right spoke length after measuring the hubs, but I already have everything, so I guess I'll find out. 😁 This video will be helpful either way and I'm sure I'll be referencing back to it several times. Thanks Alfredo and Phu! 👍
That was a great video. When you get done building a wheel you actually feel accomplishment in its truest sense.
The trueness of the wheel determines the trueness of the sense, in my experience with lacing motorcycle wheels.
I love building wheels. It's so satisfying.
Really is
9:52 - Phu burnt you so bad my dude HAHAHAHAHA "you.... you were a little more... short bus"
He wish he got me, I knew how to lace before Phu
@@AlfredoMancuso HAHAHAHA!
Im in for the live streams too! Lets go
Great video! Just what I needed. Like me, I bet a bunch of dudes just realized they can do this at home.
Phu, I'm always sticking up for you but, "SHORT BUS"?? lmfao that was Phucked up.
Big facts!!
I would have loved to of seen the trueing process.
ruclips.net/video/KepLRwsiSbg/видео.html
I feel like this guy would be able to do this bare footed squatting in a village with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth.
If y'all still reply to comments, I'm rebuilding my 87 GT Performer, and would love to know the manufacturer, model name and number, and spoke info for that hub. Are those hubs available for 48 spokes?
Seriously awesome method for lacing wheels, and entertaining too. Thanks for posting this!
Thanks for the info at it again love it. Keep it going strong
Phu alfredo awesome
Bro if u DO do a seminar watch out for the seminar stain ok my bros. Careful. And also 'nips'. Wait.... NIpS. Boom.
Happy Friday!
It’s Thursday here haha
Great video. I am going to build my 1st set. I am doing Box rim with GT Superlace for my 87 GT Performer. Any idea what spoke length I may need? Please and Thank you!
Please specify what kind of bike rim size that you are lacing. Specify whether it is a 24",26",27.5 or a 29 so the audience will thoroughly understand that nine has to fit perfectly.
building a cheaper wheel...khe hub and primo pinned rim....I'm honestly fine with that...I do more flatland than anything else these days.
The scams are catching up! I love how Steve justified his scam. He gives away all this cash and cars, yeah Steve, you do...to your friends, partners, and inner circles. You can fool your 13 year old audience, but not adults. It's coming to an end, rookie.
How to calculate the spoke length. How tight on nipples when starting 😳? Can you cut and thread old spokes. Thanks I really dig what you guys do. I'm definitely stopping by when I'm on the west coast
Dang I figured y'all was about to show us how to true it up but thanks y'all I learned something off this video 👍👍
yo this is a really sick and helpful video. any way you guys can discuss how to size spokes for any hub and rim combo?
Oh man, finally a video that explains it easily. Why do people build wheels any other way. I've tried four or five different methods and this was the only one that worked. Thanks so much!
thanks for sharing. I've always been scared to lace wheels... not sure why but I figured they would be out of balance if I did them.
Views and reviews you can't refuse...sing you song brotha!
I remember switchin rims at the skatepark back in the day id duct tape the spokes together so they stayed in the same place and jus undo the spokes and switch the rims out .
Also i used to twistlace /snowflake the spokes for my mates for a tenner (£10)a wheel .another kool vid fellas 🤘
What about a flangeless hub like the N4FL? Trying to lace one right now and can’t find any videos
i can t figure it out.(after i lace 3 grups of 2 spokes i can't skip a hole anymoore because the 6 th one from the first group prevents me from doing it is total mindblow how u can do it in the video wow. . a learned another technique there i put the spokes 1 by one and seems waaaaay more easy .sorry Phu maybe i am not able to learn this technique:(but il looks interesting
This video not only helped me save a few 💵.. but it helped me make some too.. I did not wanna charge cuz it was something I leant for free .. but they insisted.. oh well.. atleast it payed for the the monster i was sipping on
I had a gsport laced to a old clutch but the hub is broken and I have a stay strong soho cassette could I lace the gsport to my cassette hub or do I need different size spoke etc?
erd, spoke length etc...it's a rear wheel so small side big side(hub) how do I know what spokes to buy???
This was a good tutorial, I would like to see a second to finish the process. Thanks.
how do you know what size spoke you need for the rim being built.
the 12inch kink bmx (red ) where ethan is working on... i purchased one for my little me
I want to see th '87!
Also watch for my how to build a wheel video. Have a different technique.
What about the old GT Super or Race laced wheels, mine and every set I seen were all spokes the same direction out of the hubs.
if you dont know how to lace learn it the normal way. guessing spoke holes is just about the worst thing you can do if you have never done it. driver side and non driver side hub holes are offset by half the distance between holes, so that you must use the exact opposite hole that is off by half the distance to get the desired result. eyeballing it is for veterans only. park tool guys have a really good video on lacing a 3 cross the traditional way and its very easy to understand also.
In 10 years kids are gunna come here and be like damn I missed the juice, like when I go watch Adam lz vids
METAL MACRAME MASTER! 🤘👍👍🤘
🤛🏼💯
Agen you not finish! If u speek less and show the way to finish throo prove its working...
Not to sound like a negative nancy but you did not specify in this vid that with the diameter of the hub sides that you were using two different lengths of spoke
Does this store have an online store where we can support you?
stoner talking here but isnt it symmetrical and not squared? lol
You didn't say if they cross bottom over top or cross how they lay
This is not a tutorial and fails to mention rotational direction of spoke pattern as well as triple cross under under over or greasing spokes but it is a great speed method of lacing.
That wheel build is 184mm spokes 3 cross
Just did this and it worked pretty well. The added bonus is that the even X allows you to clock the hub and align the valve hole and the hub branding predictably for the extra cool points. Now to find the vid on how to true up the wheels.
Gonna try Lacing up a rim today!! Let’s go baby
Shout out Big Phu and Alf for the lessons
Let’s get it 🫡
How'd it go?
@@NuteIlaTaco the wheel is still going hard today bro!!
@@PropagndaX that's cool!
good day!may i just ask how to measure the spoke length for rim? thank you.
I'm definitely coming back to this video in the near future, I have to upgrade from single wall rims, landing a spin trick just slightly under or over rotated and I spend countless hours trying to true it back even though it's way past the point of saving.
Will this 3 cross method also work on a 48 spoke wheel?
discord notii squad
Ayyyy gang gang
Phus way is actually really good because it's adding that even tension all around so when you get to the other side it's setting you up for even tension on both sides and centers the hub with the spokes and the pattern is good too I've laced 6 wheels before I messed up only one wheel before but this was using the slower method of dropping the spoke straight down skipping one slot adding one skipping one and repeating the process for the opposite side
That’s not a square. It’s the triangle.
1 ess able to helt my friend Out in only one hour🔥🔥🔥
Haha great video, love the nine club reference too😂
Thank you for teaching me how to do this type of stuff
I prefer to drop all spokes first then lace, for me it’s the fastest way
Primo.i learnt alot ,thanks from rotorua,nz
Thanks for this video!! Your channel is very educational and entertaining. Keep them coming. ....next video....trueing
Means a lot Reggie! If you go into our videos you can find various truing videos we’ve made
dos it aplly for ebike hub motors to firs and six
The second step on the non drive side we don't need to skip the holes right ?
No sharp "P"s!!
😂😂😂
I think Phu drinks 4 cups of coffee a day.
Will this process work with a 20 spoke wheel?
How do I pick the exact spokes I need?
20 mins is waaaaaaay to long.
ya talking to much
we're back at the nine club everybody
The crossing confused me at first.
Can I buy that khe hub, haha ? Awesome vid
your sharing knowlege and were learning
You should do a video ok trewing a wheel
You gotta do a trueing video. You literally make it look so easy good teacher. Thanks dawg subscribed and liked. Building my 2009 dj
Check out Tech Thursday playlist, we have lots of “wheel trueing” videos
Can he do video on a bike for 6’3 300 lbs
Did Phu just Phu thrust tha air...
Big thrust vibes
This video is what I use every time I build cruiser wheels my only complaint is be good if we got a close up as it is being built and from a over the shoulder view 😅
love to hear it! haha
Definitely seems easier that way
I gotta find another video
3 minutes b4 any info🙄
I'm still confused lol .
