one thing he didn't mention was that the inbound spoke always goes under the outbound spoke AKA the down spoke goes under the up spoke! if you look closely he laces the wheel exactly like I explained
is this right? i just did a set using this method and the way you describe it, its would be 3x all under crosses. Down spoke over up makes it under under over counting from the inward Jbend outward. I always thought you would want spoke contact for a stiffer wheel.
Dude! You da MAN! I'm 67 years old and spent my life working with tools and repairing equipment, but had never laced a wheel before. I must have watched a half dozen how to videos without success. Finally, after watching yours, I was successfully able to lace my wheel! Thanks!
I am an auto body tech have been my entire life! That being said I love watching guys with skills and a trade like that showing and helping people out ❤ showing the right way! And being entertaining as well ,, I may just get box bike because of channels like this Rad BMx ,, couple others! I grew up in 80s 90s ! Got sub and viewer out of this guy! Great video,,,I can’t give enough good vibes to this bike shop and channel! ❤❤🤘🏻🤩😎👍🤪😉
I am building my first set of wheels in 49 years next week. I have watched a ton of videos. This was probably one of the better understood instructions. Gosh, thanks guys.
Oh man, finally a video that explains it easily. Why do people build wheels any other way. I've tried four or five different methods and this was the only one that worked. Thanks so much!
The easiest way to lace a wheel is to pay someone else to do it! ;) It took me SOOOOOOOOOO damn long to finally do my first successful 3x and 4x wheels properly. Also.... I have the same exact '87 GT performer, just in all chrome. Found it (by painfully landing on it) while playing on a ropeswing in the river that runs through my neighborhood half buried in the sand in like 2007 and brought her back to life! I asked the guy who technically owned the house where the rope swing was if I could take it and he basically said "Wow, now you kids take garbage away for free, and even underwater?! It's all yours, buddy!"
Health is wealth and knowledge is power. Y’all out here giving an arsenal of information for the community. Definitely like this vid and share the knowledge. We all have 2-4 wheels and some spokes
Finally someone who actually managed to help me learn everyone else does it the twist method way more difficult this was smooth sailing i felt i was moving just a tad slower but was keeping up pretty well minus the speed ups lol
Going to try to lace up some old Suzue high flange hubs to some Sun Envy rims 3X. Just bought the spokes, hope I don't botch it, knowing myself I'll screw something up the first try.😂 Hope I even ordered the right spoke length after measuring the hubs, but I already have everything, so I guess I'll find out. 😁 This video will be helpful either way and I'm sure I'll be referencing back to it several times. Thanks Alfredo and Phu! 👍
Can one of your episodes talk about spokes and how to pick, measure and cut spokes to the right size for hubs that have a high flange side and a low flange side?
Use a calculator. You gotta know trig to measure spokes. Every time mfg. Publishes ERD and a basic caliper to measure your hub and chuck all that info into a spoke calculator. I use 3 different calculators to make sure I have the right length
Not sure if I comment on this before. Phu just showed the magic to all. Do you see have you tried? Thank you phu for showing even those who thought they could not ever build a wheel. Or maybe I'm just Dreaming
Just did this and it worked pretty well. The added bonus is that the even X allows you to clock the hub and align the valve hole and the hub branding predictably for the extra cool points. Now to find the vid on how to true up the wheels.
I'm definitely coming back to this video in the near future, I have to upgrade from single wall rims, landing a spin trick just slightly under or over rotated and I spend countless hours trying to true it back even though it's way past the point of saving.
The first and six trick is a really super handy thing to know as well as a wheel builder because if you ever break a spoke while riding or mess up while lacing and have to remove/replace a spoke you will know exactly where it goes and how it should be positioned in the wheel no matter where at on the hub just by counting out
I've watched and tried to lace araya rims I've brought and you are by far the best!! Thank you so much this honestly is the best way and it's really not hard, watched video twice and I'm done!! Subscribing and sharing Ur channel!! Bike shop here in Australia wanted 100 dollars a wheel to do this!! 😮...thx again legend I look forward to seeing what other thing I can learn from rest of your channel 😀 ✌️
Just wanted to say that I hope you guys make a video in how to choose the right spoke size or it the spoke size matters and if there’s any difference or benefit In having a more larger or shorter spoke size or idk if y’all made one video already lol
Thank you so much for this I am currently in the middle of restoring a 2003 haro master m7 and it came with 48 spoke rims I couldn't find a decent video to lace them nor a lacing pattern online but this little 1 and 6 technique worked perfectly I'll never lace rims the same again
I remember switchin rims at the skatepark back in the day id duct tape the spokes together so they stayed in the same place and jus undo the spokes and switch the rims out . Also i used to twistlace /snowflake the spokes for my mates for a tenner (£10)a wheel .another kool vid fellas 🤘
This is the most convoluted way to lace up a traditional 3 cross spoke pattern wheel. Its much easier to lace both sides 'pulling' spokes (inside) starting at the valve hole to avoid his crossed spokes over the valve stem. Then lace all outside spokes so you don't have to fish spokes between crossed spokes on the opposite side of the hub. Also having a proper spoke length calculator to confirm spoke lengths before starting is critical.
Best tech video yet!!! I assume the method is the same for 48hole/4X, only instead of 1 and 6 it's 1 and 8? Finally laced up a set of rims I've had sitting around for a couple years. Thanks so much to you and Phu for putting this up. It's a much easier than the traditional way. Must just be the way my brain works. Haha.
Where are all the epic BMX bike shop videos because I watch the playlists and they’re not all in there they’re mixed in with some others. Keep doing the epic videos they’re awesome!! that dude is funny
Yessss my preaches have been heard! Phu is gonna build a frankenbike! With old/new school parts!!!!! im pumped cuz im riding an 87' performer myself wich is also modified and converted to new school... i never been so exited to watch the next vid haha cant wait!
Great video! Of all the ones I’ve watched on how to do this, this is by far the easiest I’ve seen! Two questions though. 1. When crossing, how are you crossing? Does that 6th spoke go over or under the other? 2. Also, when doing the drive side, is the spokes shorter? I’ve seen in some videos they say you need shorter spokes for the drive side because the flange is bigger? I’m totally new to building wheels but I really want to try it!
Questions: 1: does this apply to 36H wheels? 2: what would you suggest for lacing a hub that has a dishing offset? 3: what would you got lacing up a hub motor?
Phus way is actually really good because it's adding that even tension all around so when you get to the other side it's setting you up for even tension on both sides and centers the hub with the spokes and the pattern is good too I've laced 6 wheels before I messed up only one wheel before but this was using the slower method of dropping the spoke straight down skipping one slot adding one skipping one and repeating the process for the opposite side
how do yu decide on which spoke goes under the other when crossing? Does it remain consistent? is there a real reason to figure offset or will it just center itself and that is good?
Great video. I am going to build my 1st set. I am doing Box rim with GT Superlace for my 87 GT Performer. Any idea what spoke length I may need? Please and Thank you!
We all have different ways to get the same result. I usually do inbound drive side, inbound non drive, then finish with the out bound drive and then out bound non drive. This way my hub label is also visible threw the valve hole and the hub is clocked. Everyone does it differently, it’s cool to see the different methods that create the same outcome
Great video! Just what I needed. Like me, I bet a bunch of dudes just realized they can do this at home. Phu, I'm always sticking up for you but, "SHORT BUS"?? lmfao that was Phucked up.
You guys have helped me build up my bike and helped me decide when I need to go to a shop before I fuck shit up appreciate the knowledge. Revitalized my passion for BMX and just fucking with bikes. I needed this channel because there are no bike shops here that sell BMX bikes and if you want one you order it or buy used so with used there’s always some shit fucked up with it. Either way still have to build a bike, I would have just said fuck it and had two bikes that don’t have the rite parts put together like a special Ed transformer sitting in my kitchen. keep this shit up you guys deserve way more views
You mentioned in the video a trick you use to make a 14 mm bolt fit in 3/8 dropouts. Does this involve putting a washer around the 14 mm part of the bolt so it's flush? (Using those madera/profile hex bolts for female hubs)
I had a gsport laced to a old clutch but the hub is broken and I have a stay strong soho cassette could I lace the gsport to my cassette hub or do I need different size spoke etc?
if you dont know how to lace learn it the normal way. guessing spoke holes is just about the worst thing you can do if you have never done it. driver side and non driver side hub holes are offset by half the distance between holes, so that you must use the exact opposite hole that is off by half the distance to get the desired result. eyeballing it is for veterans only. park tool guys have a really good video on lacing a 3 cross the traditional way and its very easy to understand also.
This video is what I use every time I build cruiser wheels my only complaint is be good if we got a close up as it is being built and from a over the shoulder view 😅
If y'all still reply to comments, I'm rebuilding my 87 GT Performer, and would love to know the manufacturer, model name and number, and spoke info for that hub. Are those hubs available for 48 spokes?

remember alf when I ask you about how to lace a wheel, this was the method the bike shop taught me. way easier guys
what I want to see next is how to true a wheel.
That was a great video. When you get done building a wheel you actually feel accomplishment in its truest sense.
The trueness of the wheel determines the trueness of the sense, in my experience with lacing motorcycle wheels.
I remember switchin rims at the skatepark back in the day id duct tape the spokes together so they stayed in the same place and jus undo the spokes and switch the rims out .
Also i used to twistlace /snowflake the spokes for my mates for a tenner (£10)a wheel .another kool vid fellas 🤘
thanks for sharing. I've always been scared to lace wheels... not sure why but I figured they would be out of balance if I did them.
Thanks for the info at it again love it. Keep it going strong
Phu alfredo awesome
I am so glad I found these videos

Pho's way, is the way! Finally got my wheels done right. Thank's bro
I finally have the confidence to lace my own wheel. Thanks Phu!!!🙏🙏
Questions:
1: does this apply to 36H wheels?
2: what would you suggest for lacing a hub that has a dishing offset?

Happy Friday!
It’s Thursday here haha
Phus way is actually really good because it's adding that even tension all around so when you get to the other side it's setting you up for even tension on both sides and centers the hub with the spokes and the pattern is good too I've laced 6 wheels before I messed up only one wheel before but this was using the slower method of dropping the spoke straight down skipping one slot adding one skipping one and repeating the process for the opposite side
Im in for the live streams too! Lets go
Building and trueing wheels is just therapeutic for me.

This just made things SO much easier.....thanks for posting man!

yo this is a really sick and helpful video. any way you guys can discuss how to size spokes for any hub and rim combo?
how do yu decide on which spoke goes under the other when crossing? Does it remain consistent? is there a real reason to figure offset or will it just center itself and that is good?

Mr. phu you might include how to lace G sport rollcage or ribcage because of the hole of that rim goes on different way unlike the regular rim.

erd, spoke length etc...it's a rear wheel so small side big side(hub) how do I know what spokes to buy???
Would this work for rear hubs that need diff size spokes lengths?
Yes! You just need to cross one side more than the other. 3 cross one 4 cross the other
