Sir Keir Starmer unveils Labour's small boats policy

  • Sir Keir Starmer said he would scrap Rwanda flights immediately after entering Downing Street but that a Labour government would not bring back migrants already deported to the African country.
He said he had no doubt that Rishi Sunak would get flights off the ground before the general election but insisted the policy would not work in deterring migrant crossings.
The Labour leader claimed his plan to prioritise the targeting of people-smuggling gangs that facilitate the crossings would prove a better deterrent than the Rwanda policy.

How are they fleeing persecution? Is France that bad? Anyone arriving illegally should be jailed until processed and returned to their own government. A purpose built jail could've been built with the money it's currently costing to house them, not to mention the money that the Rwanda plan has cost. Nobody can stop them trying to get here but it can be made so that it's not an attractive risk.

The problem is that illegal refugees are rarely given a choice where they go and are rarely conveyed accurate information by smugglers. Making it less appealing to come to the UK doesn't reduce the number of people who come because they don't know that Britain is a bad place to go. Further, many smuggled immigrants never go through the official channels that would allow them to be placed in prison anyway. If we want to reduce costs and reduce immigration, the most effective method is to speed up processing so more people are able to arrive legally and be turned away legally.

I'm always surprised this isn't a bigger focus for the tories, but then I guess it's easier to demonise the asylum seekers rather than criticise the French government for some reason. Long story short, France's asylum process is even more broken than the UK's, it takes longer, has a lower success rate, and you simultaneously can't work and aren't provided with social benefits while awaiting processing. They force people to remain in poverty for upwards of a year and drag their heels, to encourage the asylum seekers to make an incredibly dangerous trip across the channel.

Immigrants are not sending £3 billion per year to Ukraine, and only boosting the NHS by £3.3bn, or sending $725 million since 2008 to Israel.
DONT get distracted. It’s the finding of these wars and interventionism that causes these migrations and then some how the people are to blame. If the country was to not intervene in other countries, those people would stay in their homes.
