Will this help SLOW HEAT LOSS?- Insulating Barn Soffit and Ridge Vent

  • I am insulating my soffit and ridge vent to hopefully slow down the heat loss when heating my barn with wood burning stove. This is just temporary until I can actually insulate my barn. I am hoping it will slow down some of the heat that goes strait up and out of the ridge vent and soffits. I think this should help a little bit. I need your opinion on how I should insulate or put a ceiling in my barn. Leave a comment below on what I should do first and how I should do it. Thanks for watching!

I just built a 40x44 wrapped but not insulated barn 10 ft ceiling. Very interested in watching this series. I have smaller 32x30 partially insulated horse barn that is transforming to my wood shop. Working on insulating that completely with metal white ceiling and blowing in some insulation on top

No simple answer. All things being equal, heat loss is much more through the ceiling than through the walls. But things aren't always equal, and if your air tightness is really weak in your walls, then the ratio of heat loss in the walls would be greater than usual. But with all that, the first thing I would do is put as much insulation in the ceiling as I could afford, and given you situation, that likely means putting in a ceiling on top of which you could stuff batt fiberglass or blown-in or something. Just make sure that you keep enough soffit ventilation open so that the air will circulate above the insulation. If that's all you do, that will be more bang for the buck than putting anything on the walls, which you could do later if the budget doesn't allow. When you get around to insulating the walls, if you want to use the foam boards, put some between the wood stringers (1" or 2", whatever fits) then add more inside to stop the heat transfer through the low R wood stringers. OR consult an insulation specialist, who may disagree with me with his/her more detailed knowledge (but would also have a possible profit motive, so get a couple of opinions). That's my 2-cents worth.

That all makes complete sense. Thanks for your input!

Yeah, I was writing a comment on air tightness, but it's right here. I think the issue with barns is that where the roof meets the walls, there is just a gap there. Anything you can do to minimize air flow out will help tremendously including where the walls meet the foundation. I think 1-2" PIR metal faced insulation will probably be a good bet too if you get to that point. Guess it depends on how warm you want it to be in there and what kind of ventilation you want/need. I wouldn't want to store gasoline in an airtight barn for instance.

I have no idea, but what's in the bucket hanging from the ceiling?!

Ha ha! It’s full of chains for a counterweight so that I can get my pulley to come back down to the ground.

I think you need a ceiling.

I keep hearing that. That is likely what is going to happen.
