Dogs establishing rank and dominance, posturing behaviour to avoid conflict

  • Watch as this German Shepherd and Husky ( both bitches ) establish superiority and deference within a few moments of communication using only low vocals and posturing. Dominance depends on how you interpret it. Using the term dominance as an excuse to use physical punishment in a bid to establish leadership or becoming the pack leader is a complete misunderstanding and misuse of the concept. Dominant dogs project a presence and in most instances do not resort to fighting. Their ritualised displays are understood and accepted by other dogs and generally avoid conflict. Suggesting that the use of physical force towards a dog is interpreted by that dog as you being dominant, or alpha, or the pack leader is absolutely ludicrous. Unless you look like this ^^^, sound like this, move and smell like this - In fact, unless you ARE this ^^^, then your most likely outcome through the use of physical 'dominance' is a fearful avoidance/submission caused by confusion in the dog. Those are made up words to assert dominance over your mind.

      My two huskies do this. Luna is the boss she has been with me for 3 years and tsunami the new member does as she says. I allowed her to say she’s boss after me because when I’m not home she makes sure tsunami doesn’t bite my shoes or grab things she’s not suppose to. I agree with you that they are pack animals. Right after my huskies fight they play tag with each other in the yard. The raise in the tail the husky did is to prove she is still alpha dog and the German Shepherd had no eye contact the entire time because he knows.

      Studies show dogs aren't pack animals and they don't think they're alpha, here's an article proving this point. Dogs are not on a quest for world domination. They are not socialized wolves who are constantly striving to be ‘top dog’ over us, and they are not hard-wired to try and control every situation.
      Contrary to what traditional training ideologies and much modern media would have you believe, most canine behavior problems stem from insecurity and/or a desire to seek and maintain safety and comfort - not from a desire to establish higher rank and be the ‘alpha’ over you.
      Therefore, teaching dogs ‘who’s the boss’ by forcing them into some mythical state called ‘calm submission’ is precisely the opposite of what they actually need in order to learn effectively and overcome behavioral issues.
      Much of this misunderstanding stems from the erroneous application of early studies of captive wolf packs to our understanding of the dynamics of our domestic dogs. There are two problems with extrapolating those wolf pack studies onto dogs:
      1. Dogs and wolves are in fact quite different species.
      and
      2. The results of those studies have since been disproved by the very scientists who conducted them.
      Despite this, terms such as 'alpha dog,' 'top dog,' and 'pack leader' have become part of our society’s readily accepted and commonly understood lexicon. Interestingly, when used to describe human concepts of leadership and rank hierarchy, these terms can indeed be useful and usually pose no problem. But issues begin to arise when we ascribe these concepts to our domesticated dogs, assuming incorrectly that dogs place the same value as we do on the practice of identifying who is of higher rank in any given situation.
      Resisting the urge to assign our human insecurities onto how we believe our dogs think and feel is a prerequisite to being able to understand and build truly balanced and healthy relationships with our dogs.

      True but dogs by nature prefer not to resort to violence to resolve conflict. A lot of times owners do not train their dogs properly, and/or they don't allow dogs to resolve their problems so they get pent up.

    Dominance has been bred down in dogs? Really! So instinct counts for nothing?
    Walking packs of dogs daily I see dominant behaviour a lot.
    Also as silly as the TV vet saying we won't have to train dogs as selective breeding will make them born trained!

    • @g3ck031
      @g3ck031 5 лет назад +5

      It does not need to be bred down since it is not here to begin with.
      I won't write an essay but the initial study showing hierarchy dominance in wolves is debunked, the autor of the book that popularised the idea in the 60's (David Mech) said himself that this theory doesn't hold any kind of value, and that wolves packs are actually families with a family hierarchy and no wolves in there wants to go up or down the ladder.

      @@jmas1219 theres a book called the other end of the leash by Patricia McConnell that explains that some pack animals (hyenas it might have been from memory) will work together in packs when prey is abundant but when food is scarce they will separate and go scavenge alone. The same has been seen in wild dogs. Its a matter of opportunity.
      Also the guy above that said pack hierarchy was debunked is correct in that the original writer regretted what he wrote but since there have been newer studies at yellowstone ect saying pack hierarchy has been seen. The 2 so called alphas are there to protect the pack, find the food, scare off predators. They do work as a team in this but the 2 leaders make the decisions. Otherwise there would be chaos.

My Husky Storm (RIP) always dominated my sister's GSD. Once she tried to take food from his bowl after finishing her own, he literally shoved her to the ground and stood on one of her ears until she gave up.

  • @Aswodel
    @Aswodel 2 года назад

    It's funny how this is dominance, but if the dog would have bitten it is not? As you wrongfully explain in the bio? IMHO you don't know what you are talking about. Dominance is about forcing someone, or something to do your bidding, and that is with force if needed. If the dog does something really bad, and you don't punish him hard enough, which means he stops immediately after, it means your dog didn't get the message. Do this enough, and your dog will try to dominate you by growling, humping and claiming stuff and even you... If the GSD here would try to dominate the dominant husky, we all would know what would happen, because the GSD knows what will happen, he doesn't take the risk of dominating the husky. If the husky would be weak, like you most likely are, than the dog WOULD go for dominating because he senses your weakness, and in his world that means you are NOT PROTECTING HIM, which is the most important for your dog, he wants to feel save! Stop trying to be a RUclips dogtrainer and get a real big masculine and dominant dog if you really want to learn something. This video is the same as the 20y old dogtraining RUclipsr with a Rottweiler trying to explain why he gets bitten by his dog lol.... You shouldn't get bitten, not even once, doesn't matter what you do, doesn't matter if your dog likes it or not, the boss is not being bitten by his followers. If you are getting bitten, you are doing everything very very very wrong, and IMHO you should give your dog to some1 who knows what they are doing, and even pay them for fixing your dog.
