Linux 6.10 will have mainline kernel gpu support for rk3588 with the addition of the new panthor mali drm driver, which will make it work with the mesa panfrost opengl driver. It might be a good idea to compare the performance of that opengl driver when the 6.10 kernel is out.
Also vulkan support wise, panvk(wip mesa mali vulkan driver) is still being actively developed by collabora
As always, still today, the main problem of the orange pi 5 is the lack of software support. All of that power just wasted and it's such a shame
Because it's a knock off and the user should know how to use the software that is available but you're right that it does suck not being able to have more desktops or distro's available though.

RK chips are really good, just Linux support isn't as good as the Broadcom SoC in the Pi 5
Collabora is still working on mainline linux kernel support for everything
Don't forget also that the price is a lot higher than the traditional SBC market. That power is relative and for the price point there are better options that support a lot more than both Pi's
Exactly - that's why I stick with the RPi boards. The Chinese manufacturers throwing out the alternatives have zero interest in supporting them with drivers, or software updates. They just care about selling the hardware, and then selling new hardware to replace it a few months later. When the RPi is getting literally 10 times the framerate, it's obvious that the Orange Pi is only useful as a server, at best.
ur emulator settings r far too off to yield any comparison results. in all orange pi ps2 gaming results, it out performs the raspberry pi 5 even on the more demanding games within linux. where the raspi 5 would stutter. u should also try using armbian jammy on the orange pi 5. ubuntu is the worst distro to use for either board and is a resource hog. even on the raspi 5 u used the wrong video grpahix driver with pipeline. i have over several hundred videos and instances that would conclude the same as familiar with ps2 gaming between the 2 would also admit the same. the rk3588 is much better than the raspi 5 for gaming
Would have been interesting to also see a Intel N100 miniPC running Ubuntu next to it also, because prisewise they don't differ much.
RK3588 crushes the Pi 5 for PS2 Emulation (& most other systems I've tried.) The new RK3588 kernel only makes this lead even greater. (see my how good is RK3588 PS2 Emulation video for many examples that fail badly on Pi5) With ALL these ARM boards, you MUST know the Emulator and its settings in depth to get many working. Getting "The Getaway (@ 1080p) & Burnout 3" working on RK3588 took me days of testing.

@@smashedlegends Hmm not sure your even serious here however, Pi 5 Its good for some things, just weak for Emulation. (& i'm as sad about that as the rest of the community) Ubuntu (ARM) is also always a bad choice for Emulation testing. Like Lee even states @ 7:47 ANDROID is the better option for both. (the RK3588 still wins however) Check out my own RK3588 Android PS2 tests with games not yet seen running on Pi 5 with any O/S.
Before, the selling point of Orange Pi was that it was cheaper than a Raspberry Pi, never mind that you'll be living in the frontier, with no support whatsoever.
These days, with the price, I'd rather get an N100 mini pc. It's cheaper.
Here's hoping they get the mainline kernel up to the latest 6.x soon. Right now the Orange Pi 5 Plus is a bit too...tinkery for my taste to just crack it open and get it running. Would also love to see some usage / stats around the HDMI input and using OBS, as that's one of the desirable features on the OP5+.

For gaming (especially PS2), you need to switch the GLES blobs. Panfork isn't performant in PS2 emulation.
Great video.. comparison is done great.. maybe orange pi is not meant for linux gaming.. pi 5 rocks! However was shocked to see yt performance on the orange pi ! Raspberry Pi can't beat that! Android gaming is better on orange pi I suppose.. can't wait for u to compare them too..

Board makers need to take better advantage of the work Collabora is doing on the Linux kernel for the Rk3588. Collabora’s images are only for the Rock5B but they’ve done great work in getting a ton of hardware functionality enabled and supported and the fact that Radxa (and others) are still only shipping boards and releasing OS images with kernel 5.10 kind of sucks.
It's incorrect to say that "RK3588 is not as well supported under Linux than Raspberry Pi".
RK3588 describes the SOC (System On a Chip) and is a quad-core ARM Cortex-A76 + quad-core ARM Cortex-A55.
The BCM2712 SOC on a Pi 5 is a quad core ARM Cortex-A76, ultimately similar architectures.
The fact is that a lot of performance is gained by having properly optimised kernels and the fact is that it's easier to build a distro that supports one or two Raspberry Pi models as opposed to many Orange Pi models - plus I suspect a lot more care and attention goes into building Raspberry Pi distros due to bigger communities than Orange Pi.
I have a Gentoo Linux build for the RPi 5 but not yet one for the OPi 5 - if and when I get two as identical as possible builds for both systems, that would be a good baseline to test on.

Orange is super quick versus Rpi 5 until you start trying to do 3d hardware acceleration in video games, and that’s just because the software is still under development.
Nice comparison. I'm looking forward to seeing the Android video now. It would be helpful if the system background for the different devices were set to the manufacturers' logos for easier identification.
I feel the orange pi 5 plus would be best for android.. but at the selling point of $130 American on Amazon, with that being said.. It still wouldn't play Fortnite mobile... so what's the point???
I've been testing this on the Orange Pi 5 today. RUclips 4k 60 playback is very good, with a fair few dropped frames at the start but very few from then on, as long as you don't move the mouse. WebGL Aquarium shows very impressive results. I was getting a locked 60fps with 1000 fish and 30fps with 5000. Even 10000 was still getting around 17. The inbuilt video player could not play most of the videos that I threw at it and also came up with repeated errors regarding a missing MP4 encoder. I hope that we can get a fully functioning Kodi soon. Lots more testing to do.
It was reported a couple of weeks or so back on CNXSoft that Vulkan will not come to the Orange Pi 5 in Linux until the end of the year, 2 years since it's introduction.
Isn't Rockchip getting new OpenGL drivers probably sometime in July?
Man, I have been waiting for a true Raspberry pi 5 vs Orange pi 5 battle. It's almost like there is a Raspberry pi embargo on a head to head comparison unless the RP5 is favored. To date, no major youtuber has performed a true unbiased head to head PI 5 review and comparison to see which one is best from a hardware performance stand point. But it still may not be that fare because RPi has more software support.
RK3588 is also far more power efficient as it's on an 8nm node. Pi 5 on the other hand is on a 16nm node.

Not sure it's fair to judge Orange Pi gaming just by playing emulated games. Would be interesting to see native Linux games on both devices, and Steam games. Portal 2 runs amazingly on my OP5.

Orange Pi 5 Plus just murders the Raspberry Pi 5 in multi-core
The problem is, that most applications can't use multi-cores. Most applications use only a single core. It's a bit like recommending a bus to a default family. Yes, a bus can carry much more people. But most families haven't got so many people that need to drive to the same location. That is why most families(gusy) buys only a small car(computer) with 4-5 seats (cores) and not a bus with 16 seats (cores) or more.
@@Volker-Dirr That is complete rubbish. Multi-core CPUs started to come out around 2006 and, sure, it took a while for developers to catch up - but that is almost 20 years ago now and I'd argue that the Open Source world took the lead in embracing both 64-bit CPUs and multi-core CPUs first.
I believe some commercial applications like Microsoft Outlook are still single threaded but those are the exception now, rather than the rule - and if you still use Microsoft's rubbish then more fool you anyway.

youtube-wise, OPI5 does h264, h265 and VP9 in HW, whereas RPI5 does only h265 (HEVC) in HW, the rest in SW.
Dropping a lot more at 4k60 than the good ol' Nvidia Shield, but more flexibillity on the systems shown here.

I have an Orange pi plus which has Joshua Riek's ubuntu 22.04 server installed. I want to run it as a Plex server. I've installed Docker and am not sure how to put Plex on it. Any suggestions? I'm hoping for 3D acceleration to work.

So, I'm building a Laptop-Dock for DeX on my Samsung Z-Fold 5 with parts of old laptops I have laying around. I'm planning on having a Raspberry Pi 5 (8GB) as a second compute unit, when I am not using the Z-Fold (or using the Z-Fold somehow else...) for gaming (emulation, old and newish games), navigating and streaming the internet, do some work, the usual stuff... But I was wondering if there was other (better?) options than the Raspberry Pi 5, like the Orange Pi 5 (Pro?), or Banana Pi, or a mini-pc stripped down from it's case?

I mostly use the Raspberry Pi 5 even though the Orange Pi is more powerful. If you ever get an issue or want to try something new you have so many more choices with Raspberry Pi. If it was purely down to emulation the Orange Pi does perform better on later consoles particularly GameCube Wii and PS2.
For the record, that VK attempt on the OPI5 at 8:49 is yet another SW renderer, just passing via VK -- llvmpipe device is a SW impl. of VK and GL.

Been left totally scratching my head over the massive drop in performance you saw with this new build.. while I'm seeing my NanoPi R6c, on Ubuntu Minotaur, trash the pi5. Early days still for Numbat.. hopefully panfrost just needs a tweak.

@@leepspvideo Video has always been exceptional on the RK3588S boards I have.. 4k playback has been great.. As for Emulators, they all run really well. Sad we'll never get Vulkan support for Linux on them.. Did a fresh build of both Dolphin and PPSSPP over the weekend and they run like a dream (well for what the hardware is). If I go by the video results my Anbernic RG35XX-H(1.5Ghz H700) handheld runs PPSSPP better than Numbat currently.. lol 🖖
