  • Let’s take a look at Ubuntu 24.04 running on the Pi 5. There are a few issues installing Ubuntu 24.04 to USB or PCIe and I go over the possible workarounds for these issues. It’s great to see new versions of Ubuntu available for the Raspberry Pi as soon as a new Ubuntu release drops for other architectures.
To boot Ubuntu 24.04 from PCIe, make sure to add dtparam=pciex1 to config.txt after flashing the image to an NVMe drive.
05-03-24 Update on Install Issu: Dave, from Canonical, has made an image available with a proposed fix - attached to a comment here. Give it a try if you are having issues installing to USB or NVMe:

I updated the description with a link to the bug report where Dave has attached an image with the proposed fix. This will take a few days to make it RPi Imager. Check that out if you are having issues with installing Ubuntu 24.04 to USB or NVMe

This update has saved me from going completely insane, as nothing worked for me to get even the initial installation from the sd card. Now all is working from nvme. Your Video was a game changer for me!!!

Good review! I splashed out on a N100 mini pc because it runs official windows and has hardware video acceleration. I still use several Raspberry Pi 5s and Pi 4s for Linux and 720p browser streaming for other rooms in the house

Try the SD Card Copier from RPi OS. It's a reliable workaround

Got Ubuntu 24.04 to finally run on my Pi 5. I used the iDsonix M.2 NVMe usb adapter on my windows 11 laptop then I opened raspberry pi imager, selected pi 5 and the Ubuntu 24.4 desktop image and then wrote it to a patriots 512GB NVMe. Aftter completion I connected the NVMe drive to my Pi5 with a NVMe hat and it booted. The initial installation screen graphics was corrupted but after that everything went well and it works!

Did your config.txt have dtparam=pciex1? The corrupted graphics is a known bug and it is being fixed.

@@makerbymistake no I did not have to modify the config.txt.

Hello everyone i have a problem about downloading Ubuntu on Raspi 5. I use raspberry pi imager to write ubuntu on micro sd card and after the installation done i take it from my pc then i put my raspberry pi but after that there is no interface that i can see. I download desktop version for my using not server version. When i turn on the power there is some lines comes up after that i see ubuntu logo and loading sign. Finally there is a setup section and it starts good every downloadable things is "OK" but when waiting for a while everytthing turns to "FAILED" or "DEPENDS" so how long that i wait there is nothing happen. Is it about sd card, imager, raspberry ? What can i do to solve this

It's kinda crazy how "random" it is. Makes it harder to troubleshoot, for sure.

You don't need 3 media. You can just install the Ubuntu to the SD card, boot and set it up and use dd on the live system to copy it to the nvme. All of these GUI flashing utilities are just wrappers for dd

On pi5 24.04 is terrible compared to the previous 23.10, it takes longer to boot and it's full of errors and can't even run Pi Chromium without disabling sandbox. From the install process to using basic apt commands the errors are very apparent. And, it's still infected with snap even though they announced a decoupling this distro and no widevine in the main repos. IMO I would not recommend 24.04 if you're looking for a good desktop experience, at least not rn.
