Solid advice. I hope case makers take advantage of the PCIe port. So much potential there.

I bought an orange pi 5b a few months ago for a roving offgrid android streaming centre for caravan use. It is great but the software support is nowhere compared to rpi, it does what I want but I do not see it as anything other than what I bought it for. An rpi can be virtually anything due to the massive soft and hardware community support. Great hardware needs great os and software to shine

I must say that I am genuinely impressed with the Pi Foundation.
I wasn't rushing to get a Pi 5 (because I don't really need one yet) but then I got an email from The MagPi magazine a few weeks ago telling me that as a subscriber, a Pi 5 had been reserved for me if I wanted to order it.
So I did and it has arrived today! The complete package - Pi 5, fan, case and power supply, and still a week left before "the end of October" as Eben had suggested.

Stock shortages aren't impressive. So therefore the company isn't very impressive. Completely opaque about actual production rates. They basically didn't prepare properly for the launch. Doesn't matter how good their product is if the company is mismanaged. If I had known I would be waiting 4 months to get mine, I wouldn't have ordered it and my first Pi is likely to be my last. Everyone is making SBCs and they will be out-competed by for profit companies that are offering more performance for less money. Pretty sad when a nonprofit just wastes money like that. The product should be cheaper and better. But it isn't. The Pi Foundation seems more like one of those nonprofits where they pay themselves a salary even bigger than a for profit company. Basically a grift so engineers and managers can make more money while claiming to be a 'charity'. Same mentality as a tent church evangelist.

@@Lurch-Bot "Stock shortages aren't impressive. So therefore the company isn't very impressive."
      The two are mutually exclusive.
A new Porsche sports car is impressive. A Porsche sports car crashed into a tree is not impressive.
      Your statement is meaningless.
"Completely opaque about actual production rates."
...which could be a "trade secret" subject to signed contracts demanding that production rates are not revealed anyway.
"They basically didn't prepare properly for the launch."
I think you're just a bit sore that you weren't one of the first to get one. Sounds more like your FOMO rather that their preparations.
"Doesn't matter how good their product is if the company is mismanaged."
Incorrect. How many gamers, for example, buy games they consider to be excellent from companies that have been known to treat their staff badly or even been subject of accusations of misogyny and abuse within their organisation? Most consumers don't care about the companies, they just want the right product at the right price.
"If I had known I would be waiting 4 months to get mine, I wouldn't have ordered it and my first Pi is likely to be my last."
See? This IS just about you "throwing a strop" for not getting your own way.
"Everyone is making SBCs and they will be out-competed by for profit companies that are offering more performance for less money."
I don't even know what that statement means.
"Pretty sad when a nonprofit just wastes money like that."
What money have they wasted? They seem to be able to sell everything that they produce - you said yourself that they ran out of stocks for a while. Now you're contradicting yourself.
"The product should be cheaper and better. But it isn't."
You can say that for ANY product. "The market determines the value", it's the first rule of capitalism.
"The Pi Foundation seems more like one of those nonprofits where they pay themselves a salary even bigger than a for profit company."
That's a meaningless statement unless you can give me actual examples of "those nonprofits". So who are they?
"Basically a grift so engineers and managers can make more money while claiming to be a 'charity'."
Not everybody in a charity can work for free. And a "non-profit", as I understand it as an engineer myself, can pay what it likes to staff - it just has to plough its profits back into the business and/or the employees.
"Same mentality as a tent church evangelist."
I'll take your word for it given I don't follow any organised religions.
All the above says to me is you're wound up because you could not get a Pi 5 as quickly as you wanted one.

Wow. Someone let the trolls out from under the bridge today. Yes, Orange Pi is great and if it does everything that you need, good for you. I want Retro Pie and just got it recently. Need a HAT? Good luck. Need help? You might get it. You might not. Ebon Upton had a painful choice to make. He had only so many boards. If you or I didn't get one, we were disappointed. If a business relying on supply didn't get one, they could go bankrupt and a whole lot of people could suffer. Are we going to continue to beat this man up forever over something that he couldn't control?

On the other hand, he delivered one of the biggest advancements to micro controllers with to rp2040 that never had a shortage!
Also, some of the haters might have found a pi if they may have looked a little harder. I say this because while others were complaining about how they couldn't find a zreo2, I managed to buy 3. Had to pay a bit more and order from multiple sites, but I was late to that party.
The shortage is still real. Good luck to all! My pi 5 is on its way!
You can't beat the pi community!

3:50 As i have in one of my lastest shtty shorts, remember that it doesn’t matter how much many amps your power supply can provide. Even if you have a 10A 5V power supply, if it doesn’t have Power Delivery protocol, the IO chip is going to limit the power. You can make some config thing to disable the limit, but it will work only after the initial boot process

It happened. I finally replaced my aging PC by a system that, besides being able to function as a desktop computer, be basically one thing: Quiet. The Pi4 could be made quiet, but did not yet cut it as a desktop computer, but my current system, on which I am writing this comment, a Pi5 with an Argon One V3 case, does. And then some. And now, half a year after the publishing of this video, everything matured. I can only recommend it.

There's a hard limit of 128TB in the SDUC spec and there's no reason to believe that the RPi5 wouldn't support it. Right now in 2023, the largest microSD card is a 1.5TB card made by SanDisk and Micron. Kioxia made a 2TB prototype last year, but hasn't released it to market.

Accurate assessment, though reserved to some measure.
I assembled a Pi 5 (8Gbyte version) with NVME top hat and 2280 drive and did the flashing for boot sequence, editing config files, etc. Installed the Raspberry Pi full OS.
Yeah, it's fast! However, Wifi true throughput is around 4Mbits. Shouldn't have added it to Pi 5 in my opinion. Worthless. The LAN is, however, fast! Reboot and on/off switch don't work. Chrome stopped working after a couple weeks. Also, after a couple weeks, streaming video stopped working. Occasionally the system locks up. There are other problems too.
