I'm a total beginner and keep attempting to find a video that shows the different way to connect it to a display. One goal at some point is to create a looping video with a cheap display and some kind of board like this, but perhaps this Raspberry Pi is too valuable for this project - and I should use it for smarthome type projects. Thank you for any advice.
I'm going to make some assumptions here, but it sounds like what you're wanting to do is loop some kind of advertisement (perhaps for a restaurant or kiosk type situation). In that case, you could create a .MP4 video file, download VLC (free), setup VLC to loop a video or playlist and run the video connected to any display you wish. You'll just need a microHDMI to standard HDMI cable going from the Pi5 to your display. Hope this helps!
Great video, question at 8:30 you mention the micro HDMI port to the (monitor) HDMI port while show it at 8:32. If the monitor does not accept HDMI, but rather USB C is it expected for this to work as all parts are connected, however/albiet through an adapter (from HDMI to USB C) on the monitor end?
My apology, I don't quite understand the question. The microHDMI end plugs into the port nearest the USB-C port on the Pi. The opposite (full size HDMI end) then plugs into the external monitor. I hope this helps clarify?
Not always. I've found the one included with the CanaKit to edge out the active cooler in my tests but only by 1-2 degrees: wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi5/#CanaKit_Raspberry_Pi_5_Starter_Kit
@@WagnersTechTalk thank you. I want to run docker, immich, jellyfin, syncthing, portainer, nginx etc. Do you think it's a good choice to go with pi 5? I have all these now on pi 4 4GB. CPU throttles to 80-9% with temperature 50-60 Celsius. Hence thinking about to upgrade. What is your thought? Thank you and great video.
Thank you! I'm running docker in an Ubuntu VM in virtual box for an upcoming project. You don't necessarily need a Pi5 to do that, unless you want an always-on machine. You can also run what you're wanting on your current computer (most likely) along side your host operating system (i.e. Windows, MacOS, etc.). I released a guide+video last week on how to do this, if interested: wagnerstechtalk.com/vms . If you want a dedicated machine, you can also install Ubuntu here: wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi5/#Ubuntu_Desktop . In that video, I don't go into docker but of course you can add it.
@@WagnersTechTalk I do have a PC with lower configuration for some heavy tasks. But from power consumption perspective I chose raspberry pi. Is it worth to invest in pi 5 for above things?
Either way will work, but if you have a decent PC, running in a VM is an option also. Just don't want you spending money if it's not necessary. Totally up to you and your needs.
OK the real question is how will it run emulation? How much better is it than 4? Would be awesome if a Pi could someday be powerful enough to run Vpin.
All of the Retro Gaming platforms are either beta or experimental at the present time. While the Pi5 is 2-3 times faster than the Pi 4, not all the emulators that would benefit from the faster speed are ready yet.
The Pi 4 was too slow for PS2 emulation. It looks like the Pi 5 is fast enough for PS2 emulation, but you might see some performance issues with specific effects.
Thanks for the video, excellent. My son is trying to set up a screen and encountered two problems - one his SanDisk micro SD is no longer working. It's not even being recognised and we've tried using a fix type Web page, but the keys that it says to delete are not there, so we're stumped. The other issue is a ribbon cable that won't go right into its port on the back of the screen fully. It's a Smartipi touch pro. Any help would be most welcome. From a frustrated mum.
Thank you for watching! For the microSD card that isn't working, it could be defective or it may be a fake card. I've seem some branded cards that are fake and low quality (knock-offs). You can try re-formatting the card using SD Card formatter (here's how: wagnerstechtalk.com/common/#Format_SD_Card_SD_Card_Formatter - all data on the card will be wiped clean ). Then, try to re-image PiOS and see if that helps. If not, you could pickup another card locally from Wal*Mart, Best Buy, etc. I don't have the SmartiPi Touch Pro with a Pi 5 ( smarticase.com/products/smartipi-touch-pro ) and not seeing anything on Amazon ( amzn.to/3VSPhtg ) in the reviews that would indicate a problem with the cable not fitting. Looks like for the ribbon cable you just need to gently pull the black tab forward or up (hard to tell from the images) on the connector, insert the cable and bring the black tab back to lock it in place. Be careful with the black tabs on the connectors, they are very fragile.
If the SD card was directly inserted into the Raspberry Pi 5, what would be the option on the STORAGE type use at 11:23 Edit: Forgot to mention, I don't have a USB that can hold the SD card 2nd Edit: Also, if the OS is already installed on the Raspberry Pi, how do I make sure I can use it without overwriting whatever the OS is on there?
You'll likely want a SD card reader, like this one: amzn.to/3ReWDVF (I've bought about 5 of these, they work well). Insert the microSD card and it will report the brand/capacity under storage. As you will be booting from the microSD card (with PiOS running), it won't show up in the list to prevent you from overwriting the currently running OS.
Hi, I am new to this field and I have a question. Can I operate the Raspberry Pi5 with the phone charger, which usually exceeds 27w ? Will it harm the Raspberry or not?
Great video man! I needed to be up to date as I was in the RasPi 3 hahah XD, and I needed to assemble some RasPi's 5 for a project. By the way, 6:40 the reason is because that case (as well as the fan that comes with it) assumes you don't have the cooler from the RasPi, so yeah, you have that "extra" heat dissipator. And also in 7:15 that's why you cannot put the plastic part there, because that case isn't designed for the cooler with the heatsink itself ;)) I'll keep watching and giving more feedback :D
You detached the opaque cover for the cooler and didnt try turning it around? Unless im missing something, I have the same case, you 180 the opaque cover around and it fits, no interferance.
Interesting, I thought I recall trying every combination but it is entirely possible I missed something. Thank you for your comment, I'll check it out this weekend. If so, will add a note on that.
@@WagnersTechTalk i just checked again, i have the stock heatsink which is smaller, so probably why all your combinations didint work.. There completly different.
Great video 😊 I’m just about to buy my first Pi (5) for projects and improve my coding skill and this video was useful. What’s confusing me, is what display to buy as I currently use a legion 7 for gaming and work, don’t have a separate monitor, and have limited desk space. But if I am to code on the monitor I use for Pi projects, i guess it needs to be useable. Any advice anyone? Thanks 😊
There are a lot of options. A portable folding display may work out well for you. That way, when ur not using it you can easily stow it out of the way. Some can be had on sale for decent prices. I've reviewed a few on this channel that are 1080p-4k.
Did a quick search on Amazon, right now this appears to be a really good deal (~$70): amzn.to/3ZFwH9W . However, I don't own this particular monitor but the reviews look really good.
@@WagnersTechTalk Hi, Thanks so much for the advice, and I think you are right - a folding monitor/screen is probably the best option. That product above (KYY monitor) looks perfect but it's £120 her in the UK which is $150, but at $70 it is a very good deal. I will try to find similar. Thanks again.
Hi congratulations for your channel! I followed the instructions to put the active cooler on my Raspberry but once placed in the case it doesn't close. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!
Very welcome! Loop videos where? If I recall correctly, you can copy a .mp4 file load it in VLC (you'll need to install it on the Pi), then set it to loop.
@@WagnersTechTalk thank you so much for the response. My problem is the Raspberry 5 VLC version seems to be complicated and incapable of looping a playlist of videos.

Thank you! Yes, if you have another Pi (5/4/3) on your network, shut it down. What's happening is the other Pi on your network likely has the same exact hostname of 'raspberrypi'. You'll want to change the hostname on one of them, but temporarily shutting down the other one will allow it to boot. See #1 here for a bit more info.: wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi5/#Troubleshooting
@@WagnersTechTalk I do not have another Raspberry Pi, but I had a hunch it was the microSD card (I had a Microcenter brand). I ran back to the one near me, got a SanDisk to put the image on, and now the System starts right up. I have had good luck with Microcenter-branded storage devices until now.
@@WagnersTechTalk I'm only one year into a new career in IT and have wanted to get a Linux machine for a year now. My professional growth task for the weekend was to master iPerf, and I wanted at least one end of it to be Linux, so I decided to purchase the Pi. Your video was very helpful. I'm going to get started with Iperf now. I use the CLI at work just often enough to need the skillset but not often enough to get good at it. Doing the little CLI stuff on VMs and Packet Tracer Labs isn't doing it for me, so I'm looking forward to using it on the Raspberry Pi. Thanks again for posting this video.

Really helpful video, thank you! My Dell monitor only has DisplayPort or DVI-D ports available. Can you recommend a micro HDMI lead that will hook up to one of these please?
Very welcome, thank you for watching! I don't have a monitor that only has DVI, nor have I tried it with a Pi 5, however this looks like it "should" work: amzn.to/3usMJby . I may be wrong, but I don't think audio is carried over DVI cables, so if it works you'll likely need an external speaker (BT) for the Pi.
Unfortunately, no. Windows running on the Pi 4 was so-so, Pi 5 should be better but there isn't currently a build for the Pi 5. Even if there was, it's unlikely that it would play VPX well.
Well in my case I encounter an issue with my new RP5. When I switch on my RP, I have the boot menu asking for an OS installation. I installed the standard version of raspbian for my RP5 then when I take my sd card from the pc then I branch my USB with the sd card into the RP5 I got a blackscreen in a few seconds then nothing happens : ( I already tried with 3 different screens and same problem
Not sure I understand. A few things to try: Take the microSD that you imaged from the PC (in your USB adapter, I presume) and plug it into the microSD card slot on the Pi with the power turned off, then turn it on. Also, make sure you're connecting the microHDMI cable to the port nearest the USB-C (Power) port on the Pi5. One of those should help.
The connection on your laptop HDMI out, not HDMI input. You could use a video capture device and display the video from the Pi on the laptop display. You could also get a portable display and use it with the Pi 5, it's what I typically use.
@@WagnersTechTalk i got the pi 5 board with 8gb and same case as you. clicked first time and didn't have to remove anything. i think you had a different cooler from me yeah
Hi John. I program with Unreal 5 on desktop. I saw an older video where someone was running a UE4 app on a Pi4. Are there any tutorials for running a packaged UE5 game on a Pi5? Thx.
Thank you for the video! Any idea why I am getting an error something like ... "the data is corrupt"? I installed the Images on the microsd, then inserted the microSD into my Raspberry Pi 5, but instead of launching the Raspberry setup process, I am getting a lot of text on a black screen. In the first line it says something about "the data is corrupt". DO you know what is it about? WHat am I doing wrong? Thank you again!
It sounds like an issue with your microSD card. I would try a different brand. Samsung, SanDisk, Gigastone, etc. are ones I use and recommend. If you're already using one of those, it seems that it may be defective.
Hi Wag I’m about to purchase my first raspberry pi and its accessories. Ok, so I’ve bought the: Official , 7 inch touchscreen. Raspberry Pi 5 The 300mm display adapter cable (x2) And then I just have a standard Logitech and mouse keyboard combo . What else if any do I need to get started other than a 32 or 64 gig SD card? Please advise
A few things you may need (listed here: wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi5/#Accessories ): * Pi5 Power supply * Active Cooler * Case (See further below for an all-in-one kit from CanaKit - everything you'll need) * May need/want a card reader (see under 'General') * As you mentioned, a microSD card is needed (see under 'General' for some ideas)
Thanks for the swift reply 😮 Sorry forget to mention the power cable I have also the recommended 27 watt something like that lol I won’t bother with the case; as I find it ugly. Plus I’m going to mount it on the back of the touchscreen, so it’s gonna be practically invisible lol So that means I’ll be ready to go and start my Linux journey? Respect for that 🫡
If you didn't order a kit, you can find what is needed listed here: wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi5/#Accessories . Also look under the 'General' section regarding microSD cards, HDMI cables, etc. Should help you with each piece.
I just installed the pi 5 and the mouse is very slow. I tried the same mouse on my windows laptop and it worked fine. Also, how do I update the computer name as seen on the network?
Here's a tread on the mouse speed: forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?t=94075 , it was fine for use with my mouse but the thread has a few suggestions. For changing the hostname, lots of different ways but this has most of them: raspberrytips.com/set-new-hostname-raspberry-pi/
@@WagnersTechTalk Thanks. I used a different mouse and the problem disappeared (I use the wired mouse for setups). I'm building a Node JS app. When I load the web page and open the dev tools, my mouse is experiencing lag. I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I have the Pi hooked up to two 4K monitors, each with a different refresh rate. The purpose of the machine is to test web pages. I'm also thinking of using another Pi for the programming side, so that I can use 2 more monitors. What do you think of this approach?
Thank you! A little help from Windows copilot (AI). Double check everything please, it's just an estimate and utility costs vary: To estimate the average electricity cost for running a Raspberry Pi 5 24/7 for a month, we can use the following steps: Power Consumption: The Raspberry Pi 5 typically consumes around 5 watts when in use1. Energy Usage Calculation: Daily usage: ( 5 \text{ watts} \times 24 \text{ hours} = 120 \text{ watt-hours} ) or ( 0.12 \text{ kWh} ) Monthly usage: ( 0.12 \text{ kWh/day} \times 30 \text{ days} = 3.6 \text{ kWh} ) Electricity Cost: The average electricity cost in the U.S. is about $0.13 per kWh2. Monthly cost: ( 3.6 \text{ kWh} \times $0.13/\text{kWh} = $0.468 ) So, the average electricity cost for running a Raspberry Pi 5 24/7 for a month is approximately $0.47.
Sure, see the first item here: wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi5/#General . There are other cables/adapters you may need both above/below if you don't have them already. Also, you'll find complete kits such as the CanaKit which includes everything except a keyboard/mouse and monitor.

Let me know how it goes once it arrives, always enjoy hearing feedback!
Whatever media you used to install PiOS, that media will need to be inserted to boot into PiOS. If you installed to a microSD, you can leave it in and also access the USB stick as well.
It depends, are you looking for HD or 4K? Curved or flat? What will you mainly be using it for (i.e. gaming, browsing, etc.)? What price range is acceptable? I can't answer without knowing a bit more of how you want to use it but I'll try to help as best I can.
You'll have to install PiOS to a micro SD. However, you can buy kits (such as CanaKit) that include the OS already on a microSD. Otherwise, you can use this video to help set it up easilly.
Is it a USB 3.0 stick and plugged into one of the blue ports on the Pi? Just curious, have you also tried a microSD card also? If so, try re-imaging the USB stick/microSD card, perhaps the write didn't complete properly.
Hello there, I'm new to the Raspberry Pi5 and have some problem with the start of the Pi. When I insert the sd card the blue screen of the monitor is shown as if there is no signal. I tried to fix it with some commands that i ad to the config file but no result.
Make sure it's plugged into the port nearest the USB-C power input. If it is, perhaps try a different microHDMI to HDMI cable (I've had bad ones in the past).
I think that I have to add some commands to the config file to recognize the monitor, but I can't orient in the documentation of the PI in the HDMI section. For example I add hdmi_safe=1 and 2 more but without result.
Programming LEDs is outside the scope of this getting started video. However, may find other videos on python and the needed GPIO libraries to control LEDs, etc.

This video will show you how to install PiOS Desktop from beginning to end. For Ubuntu, you can see this video: ruclips.net/video/RXO8HQeuuyU/видео.html . Either operating system will be fine, you can also easily swap between the two if you have two microSD cards. Try both and see which one you prefer. Yes, you can use a USB stick instead if you prefer. Make sure it's a USB 3.0 stick for best performance and that you plug it into the blue ports.

Do you have another raspberry pi on your network with the same hostname? If so, shut it down/power it off and restart the new one. I've seen that happen before when you have two Pi's with the same hostname. Once it boots up, change the hostname to something different and you should be good to go.

Thank you for another great demo and tutorial!
Thanks for watching!
The dedicated fan power socket is new in this iteration, right?
It is new on the Pi 5, yes.
Is stock cooler better than after market aluminum coolers?
The cooler I've in my starterkit has a way smaller cooler.. it fits exactly on the cpu. The one in the video is much bigger
The one I used in the video is the Active Cooler, it's optional. You can use heatsinks along with the fan that you have.
Be careful with the black tabs on the connectors, they are very fragile.
i orderd mine today!. i dont consider 80 degres termal todeling for me is more 90-95
so good and went straight to the point
Thank you for watching, Dennis!
I've followed these instructions and made it to the desktop screen. How do I start retropi/emulation station?
RetroPie hasn't been officially released for the Pi 5 at the present time.
Awesome video! Thanks!
I just got my 5 today!
Thank you and Congrats on the Pi5 👏! More pi5 fun at wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi5 if you want more projects.
If the SD card was directly inserted into the Raspberry Pi 5, what would be the option on the STORAGE type use at 11:23
Edit: Forgot to mention, I don't have a USB that can hold the SD card
2nd Edit: Also, if the OS is already installed on the Raspberry Pi, how do I make sure I can use it without overwriting whatever the OS is on there?
You'll likely want a SD card reader, like this one: amzn.to/3ReWDVF (I've bought about 5 of these, they work well). Insert the microSD card and it will report the brand/capacity under storage.
As you will be booting from the microSD card (with PiOS running), it won't show up in the list to prevent you from overwriting the currently running OS.
@@WagnersTechTalk Ok, and thank you for the guide and answer to question. Helps a lot! :)
I would love to use one of these for GeForce Now. If you could do a how-to on making that work, it'd be great!
Thanks for the idea!
Hi, I am new to this field and I have a question. Can I operate the Raspberry Pi5 with the phone charger, which usually exceeds 27w ? Will it harm the Raspberry or not?
I've only used official chargers from the Raspberry Pi foundation or CanaKit. I wouldn't try anything above 40 watts.
@@WagnersTechTalk Ok thanks for the advice and the video is very useful. Keep going.
Nice helpful video for new pi owners thanks.
Very welcome, thank you for watching.
Excellent video, it was very informative, and the explanation was clear.
I'm glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching!

You're very welcome, glad you found this helpful! The written guide ( wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi5/ ) has some additional information, if needed.
Thank you!
Thank you! Please see 06:50 , I show how to get the case to close. Thank you for watching!
Thanks for your video. Can you help with how to loop videos on the Raspberry 5?
Very welcome! Loop videos where? If I recall correctly, you can copy a .mp4 file load it in VLC (you'll need to install it on the Pi), then set it to loop.
@@WagnersTechTalk thank you so much for the response. My problem is the Raspberry 5 VLC version seems to be complicated and incapable of looping a playlist of videos.
Thank you sir, do you have other videos about gaming for Pi4 or pi5?

Thanks for the guide! I know Retropie isn't fully "supported" yet, but have you tried installing it on your Pi 5?
I'm going to wait until it's officially supported. We have Batocera and Recalbox here: wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi5/#Retro_Gaming_Emulation

My Pi 5 always seems to boot up immediately after plugging in the new 27 W USB-C power supply. Is it possible to configure it so that you have to press the power button first?
If you had previously shutdown the Pi 5 safely, it should remain on the powered off (red) state. Here are some ways to do that: wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi5/#Safely_Shutdown_the_Pi_5
I would love to see a video about ubuntu, and specifically booting ubuntu from an nvme ssd, which are now available for pi5. Although, I may have it all set up before the video arrives. But, others may benefit nonetheless
Hi, thank you for your request! I made a video on Ubuntu, though it's running from a microSD not an nvme SSD (I don't own one yet for the Pi5). You can find it here, if interested: ruclips.net/video/RXO8HQeuuyU/видео.html
Nice video. My system is stuck at the "Welcome to the Raspberry Pi Desktop" screen when I try to boot it for the first time. Any suggestions?

Why did you need to enter the WiFi information during setup when you entered it in the imager?
It didn't take it for some reason. I mentioned that in the video.
Thank you so much sir
What an awesome video 👍🏼
Very welcome, thank you for your kind comments and for watching!
Thanks for the vid John, can the Rasberry Pi be used instead of a full blown computer to run VPX via OTG on my Legends Pinball ?
Unfortunately, no. Windows running on the Pi 4 was so-so, Pi 5 should be better but there isn't currently a build for the Pi 5. Even if there was, it's unlikely that it would play VPX well.
this looks right up my alley
Is their a better case thay goes in conjunction with the active coolers and fan
There are several on the market, however the only other one I personally tested was the CanaKit here: wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi5/#Complete_Pi_5_Kits
T@WagnersTechTalk thanks for the response 👍 x
Will this connection work if I connect hdmi cable to laptop directly in stead of external monitor?
The connection on your laptop HDMI out, not HDMI input. You could use a video capture device and display the video from the Pi on the laptop display. You could also get a portable display and use it with the Pi 5, it's what I typically use.
strange that you had problems fitting the case, just got mine and it clicked in first time! does brave browser work with pi 5?
If you install the Active Cooler, the clear piece in the case has to be removed. If not, it will fit fine.

Hi John. I program with Unreal 5 on desktop. I saw an older video where someone was running a UE4 app on a Pi4. Are there any tutorials for running a packaged UE5 game on a Pi5? Thx.
Hi Chris, it's not something I've looked into at this point.
@@WagnersTechTalk Yup, it is SanDisk. I will try another one. Thank you!
Hi Wag
I’m about to purchase my first raspberry pi and its accessories.
Ok, so I’ve bought the:
Official , 7 inch touchscreen.
Raspberry Pi 5
The 300mm display adapter cable (x2)
And then I just have a standard Logitech and mouse keyboard combo .
What else if any do I need to get started other than a 32 or 64 gig SD card?
Please advise
A few things you may need (listed here: wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi5/#Accessories ):
* Pi5 Power supply
* Active Cooler
* Case (See further below for an all-in-one kit from CanaKit - everything you'll need)
* May need/want a card reader (see under 'General')
* As you mentioned, a microSD card is needed (see under 'General' for some ideas)
Thanks for the swift reply 😮
Sorry forget to mention the power cable I have also the recommended 27 watt something like that lol
I won’t bother with the case; as I find it ugly. Plus I’m going to mount it on the back of the touchscreen, so it’s gonna be practically invisible lol
So that means I’ll be ready to go and start my Linux journey?
Respect for that 🫡

I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I have the Pi hooked up to two 4K monitors, each with a different refresh rate.
The purpose of the machine is to test web pages. I'm also thinking of using another Pi for the programming side, so that I can use 2 more monitors. What do you think of this approach?
thank you for a great video! do you know how much electricity costs to run raspberry pi 5 for 24X7 for a month?
Thank you! A little help from Windows copilot (AI). Double check everything please, it's just an estimate and utility costs vary:
To estimate the average electricity cost for running a Raspberry Pi 5 24/7 for a month, we can use the following steps:
Power Consumption: The Raspberry Pi 5 typically consumes around 5 watts when in use1.
Energy Usage Calculation:
Daily usage: ( 5 \text{ watts} \times 24 \text{ hours} = 120 \text{ watt-hours} ) or ( 0.12 \text{ kWh} )
Monthly usage: ( 0.12 \text{ kWh/day} \times 30 \text{ days} = 3.6 \text{ kWh} )
Electricity Cost: The average electricity cost in the U.S. is about $0.13 per kWh2.
Monthly cost: ( 3.6 \text{ kWh} \times $0.13/\text{kWh} = $0.468 )
So, the average electricity cost for running a Raspberry Pi 5 24/7 for a month is approximately $0.47.
