Greetings from Scotland! Diana was 18 years old here and is 20yo currently but I've been following her career since she was around 13yo. Diana is a natural Dramatic Contralto so the lower registers are her comfort zone but she has increased her range even more since this. She also naturally sings with polyphonic overtones so it sounds like many voices at the same time! Any song, any genre, in any language, Diana can sing it and improve it! You need a little back story to understand what helped "create" this unique phenomenon:-
Diana's birthmother had multiple miscarriages but when Diana came along, she seemed to hate her. She verbally and physically abused her, trying to drown her and belittle her. It all culminated when (at 3yo) a passing relative found her in her home with a broken collarbone and several other injuries. She went for the authorities who removed Diana from her birthmothers care and placed her in an orphanage. For almost 2 years Diana never gave up hope and she knew that she was meant for something better. (This story is in her Wikipedia entry) Finally her new mother (Irina Ponik, who worked as a masseuse there occasionally) Signed her adoption papers and took her home. She vowed to pay Irina back for her kindness. Irina had a real struggle because Diana had obviously been badly affected by the experiences and at 5yo, she had a very bad stammer. It was recommended that she be taken for singing lessons to help this and immediately it was recognised that Diana had perfect pitch and an excellent ear for music and songs. 1 year later, at 6yo, Diana was performing solo on stage!
This young unique phenomenon sang everywhere and anywhere she could, working constantly to earn money for the family who rescued her. At 13yo she held her 1st solo concert and one of the songs she sang was in a very rare Sephardic Jewish/Spanish dialect, a song called "Me Voy" (I'm leaving) with a power and emotional commitment that staggers belief! ruclips.net/video/-9_c5fPrqno/видео.html
She was already winning every contest in Russia and other countries that she could get to. Then at 14yo Diana took part in an amazing Russian project "You're Super!" for abandoned/disadvantaged children (because Diana spent time in an orphanage) The 1st song she performed shocked the judges and audience so much, it went viral. Haunting is, in fact, the most common adjective used to describe her singing. Diana's voice (shockingly unique), is just the tip of the iceberg. I’ve never seen another performer that crushes virtually every mode of expression like she does. The stage presence, the range, the emotive ability, the tiny perfectly rhythmic swaying body movements, the witchy vocalizations, the overall shamanistic earth mother vibe, the haunting overtones, and that cavernous, velvety contralto.
Despite her rough start to life, she is now, by all accounts, a remarkably intelligent, poised, and humble young lady. To me, she is bravery, perseverance, and soul power personified. I get emotional just watching her, knowing how far she has come, never mind the otherworldly voice. By far, my favorite singer in the world. And yeah, her range is crazy for a contralto but it’s that thunderous, rich, dark, resonant timbre that stands out for me. She’s a witch, enchantress, siren, sorceress... they all apply. I wish her all the best in this world.

The sad yet amazing story of Diana Ankudinova is that despite her mother thinking she is worthless she turns out to be perhaps the most incredible female artistic talent of our time. No child should be left behind like that, who knows how high their potential can be and all kids deserve to find joy in the world. Luckily it seems it turned out well for her, but how many are lost along the way?

Yes, I have heard o lot of music in my time perhaps more than most: Classical (I love Rachmaninoff), jazz, blues, R&B, folk, country/western, bluegrass, pop rock, classic rock, heavy metal and all it's sub-genres, tribal, opera, big band/ swing (like Glen miller or Tommy Dorsey), New Wave, punk/hardcore, hard rock, surf rock, psychedelic rock, and rap/hip hop. But I have never ever EVER heard a voice like Diana's. NEVER! So I will say to you and everyone here in the comments that I will be diving deep into her catalogue of music and all that is Diana Ankudinova. I have found many artists since starting my channel and I am always looking for something 'new'. My mission is to bring these artists to more people who may not be familiar with them and to connect to the fans to teach me what they know so I can pass this information on to others. Diana is magical. You should hear her very alien performance of Hans Zimmer's DUNE movie soundtrack live in front of a full orchestra. She dropped this last last year at the age of 20. Diana was 18 at the time of this performance. Wicked Game at the age of 15 in the You Are Super contest you read about really put her on the map globally. It's sensational...and yes, Diana is indeed a contralto. Her performance of Human (in English) features her lower register (among many other songs).
She is magical!! Never in my life heard anything like her. Still amazed y this very short performance, but I am hooked! Much more to come from Diana on my show!

She is a voice for the ages, I believe she is unique in the history of the arts, not just a generational talent but truely unique. The emotiveness you feel from her voice comes from a dark place but at the same time she came out into the light on the other side to be a beacon to the world. You just scratched the surface of what she is as an artist. Besides this song I suggest Rechenka (the you are super performance at 14yrs) and her rendition of the theme song from Dune from late last year. These along with the song in your reaction are the three essential songs that, imo, show her at her fullest, but there is so so much more, she is quite prolific for her age, to the point sometimes I think she works too hard. Women can not be Baritone or Bass these are male classifications, she is a True Dramatic Contralto which is the lowest female vocal classification, is the analog to male Bass and it is the rarest vocal type in existence.
She was 18 years old on this video she is 20 currently.
Glad you checked her story, the information on the wiki are a bit outdated, her lowest now is from A2 and her highest up to D6 she has an insane range and she continues to get better and better even though this would seem impossible since she was singing masterpieces from the age of 13.
You should watch more, how about checking "Wicked game" next.

It's so sad what she went through because of her biological "mother" that might be one of the reasons most of her performances have this "dark" and haunting side to them...I am glad she has a much happier life now. She totally deserves to be recognised worldwide.
