- Rachel Zegler, who's playing Maria in Steven Spielberg's new West Side Story film (out December 2021), played the role a few years ago in Bergen Performing Arts Center's Performing Arts School production while she was in high school. She was 16 during this performance, in the summer between her sophomore and junior years.

This is why I love high school musicals: Because there is always that ONE KID who you can just SEE has real talent, or at least stage presence. There's a charming, earnest amateurishness to them, but that one kid -- and it doesn't have to be the lead -- steals the show.
Wow! She sounds almost exactly like she does in the film! I'm going to see it a third time, and I'm even considering a fourth.
She sounds better in the film. She's a bit more mixy in this and the vibrato is less refined and wider. She has improved.
@@KajiVocals obviously the acoustics in the theater are different when you do a recording there. But it's still a fantastic display of her range.
Their point was that it’s close. They said ‘almost’. Of course she would have improved in the intervening time, plus this is LIVE. They were just complimenting how good she is.
I get where you're coming from but I'd still say I disagree. She has a much more classical approach here. Notice how she uses a lot of vibrato and "round" sounding vowels? She doesn't do that in the movie version because what they are going for is more contemporary. That essentially means more forward placed and less round. Both are really nice to listen to but they do sound different cause it's a different set f techniques
Imagine being the teacher having this kind of talent in your high school play
Gotta call it: she is going to be the best thing about this new adaptation. Can't wait for this movie to come out!

Wow she's incredible, the whole cast is fantastic. It's so impressive hard to believe it's a high school musical. Seems like a Broadway touring company. She's young to have a huge career. Sings like an angel and pretty look a goddess. She stood in the right line... hope she has a huge career.

@@Chris-di6nl Colombian is not that far off from Puerto Rican. The original settlers of Puerto Rico took off from Colombia and Venezuela. She’s half Colombian. Close enough. It’s like an Italian playing a Greek or something- some of the Greek family in My Big Fat Greek Wedding was Italian.
Bc this is so dope. The fact that she did this at 16 and then went on to be in the movie. Fucking go her honestly. I've already seen the new movie (It's jaw droppingly good) but I feel like watching this full production next would just be so cool.
She'll be a great Snow White. I can already see her singing to birds, lol.

I’m personally not a fan of musicals. That said, she is a solid casting choice to play Maria in the upcoming film. She hit every single note effortlessly!

Kids, Natalie Wood did not sing in the original West Side Story. Her vocals were done by Marnie Nixon. Glad they chosen a real singer for the part of Maria in this decade’s adaptation.
Oh, yes. She’s good - very, very good. I can see why they chose her. She has a wonder quality about her on top of a terrific singing voice.
If she plays her cards right, she’s going to have a very long and successful Hollywood career. God bless her; she’s only 20. I pray she keeps her head above water and steers clear of all the sharks out there.

Saw the movie. As expected she was amazing! (The whole thing was actually)… so now I’m here to see her sing it again! (Until I can see the movie again!)
If "I Feel Pretty" is cut from the film, at least we can watch this.

@@jovanolague3161 It could be a possibility. The 2009 revival cast recording has both Jump and A Boy Like That with the original English lyrics as bonus tracks on its cast recording, so it would be nice if “I Feel Pretty” was included in the film’s soundtrack as a bonus track.
@Jane O'Leary from a movie structure, it makes sense to cut the song. In the original play, act 1 ends with the rumble and we begin act 2 with “I Feel Pretty” to set audiences up for the shocking news Maria will get soon. Even in the 1961 film, the song was after an intermission and set before the rumble because following a dire and dramatic turn of events with an upbeat song is a jarring change in tone and would throw off most film audiences.

It's so interesting to see the stylistic changes to the movie version she was in later. Much more classical. Round and lots of vibrato. The movie version is more contemporary. More forward placed. Softer too. Both are really impressive but you can definitely tell she has improved
Just got back from the movie, and Rachel was so transcendent! It definitely shows here what potentials she has as a new up and coming actress.
Rachel will be fantastic in the film. Her grace and dancing are as lovely as her voice.
Glad she became the "4th" Snow White since Ginnifer Goodwin, Lily Collins, and "Twilight's" Kristen Stewart! Now she's one of my new FAVORITE singers!

@@quinnbenz987 She has said before that from where she lived during high school, they didn't have a competition that would allow the winners to go the Jimmy's. Also, she had always been nominated for best actress for that competition, but never won.

In my opinion, Rachel will be the best Maria, a beautiful Latina girl with an even more beautiful voice. I know she will do the movie adaption justice. ❤❤

I think she's going to be great too but let's also remember she's Colombiana, not Puerto Rican. Latina is not interchangeable, I do wish they had thought more about casting someone from Puerto Rico the accents are going to be all over the place.

Thers is a big difference, and I do wish they would've cast a real puerto rican american or a puerto rican young lady, I think Rachel will do well in the role all just the same! But yes, I do understand that culture and ethnicity is what makes this musical so unique, by implementing puerto rican culture and Puerto rican people in it (which has been very white-washed in the past). ❤❤

I guess Most here have never seen the real “West Side Story” 😂 Any time a rendition is made of a true classic,it usually falls flat on its face and make no mistake you cannot remake the original “West Side Story” STOP IT!!...Just put the original movie back out in movie theatre's and people will come e out in droves....
@Han Organa Just to add to your comment "Latinos playing Latinos" this is not quite right. Rachel Zegler is Colombian. This is not the same thing as being Puerto Rican. The term Latino/Latina is not interchangeable. That is like saying oh a person of Chinese descent is in The King and I so this makes it better and more realistic. I think the original commenter is just saying the of WSS was iconic (also Rita Moreno was Puerto Rican.) I think we also need to reserve judgement until we see the film. Spielberg although an amazing director is White. He might whitewash WSS in other ways or make stereotypes of what it's like to be Puerto Rican (like hiring a Colombian woman for the role.) Just be careful with the interchangeable Latino/Latina comments in the future (:

The "REAL" West Side Story??? LMAO it's a musical. Musicals are literally created to be performed again and again. The really good ones carry on for generations; WSS being a prime example. My 20 year career on stage began after I performed numerous musicals with my hometown civic light opera; West Side Story being one of them. Was ours not "REAL"? Were the thousands of performances of this show on Broadway not real? Or this INCREDIBLE performance shown above not "REAL"? Give me a break.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with finding and holding onto a particular performance as your personal favorite. That's half the magic of the performing arts! But it is not the worlds job to stop telling and retelling the best of its stories just because you've decided nobody can do it "better". I get chills thinking about how many kids will see the original theatrical version BECAUSE this new production will lead them to it.
Just say your favorite is the one where Maria doesn't actually sing and move on.

She good but not great, her upper registers are not very pure. This is a much better performance. Also done by a high school cast with 16 year old as the leads.
