I used to play this at my cousin’s house. Probably almost 30 years ago. I watched through this whole thing with a sense of completion having seen all kinds of thing i never figured out long ago. Thanks for this. How weird that I cared enough to watch this, but I actually enjoyed it - I can die happy now 😂😂
This brings back memories. The anxiety of being caught by Mananan at any given time. The anxiety while walking down that mountain path the first time. The anxiety of facing the Medusa. The anxiety of possibly mistyping something while casting a spell in the cellar lab. Of course, those were different times, when creating or loading a savegame onto a floppy disk took roughly a minute......
Timing everything, running to hide your stuff, triple checking for typos, step step stepping sloooowly along the mountain, I loved this game but I agree it was so anxiety inducing lol
I remember being really clueless playing this game as a kid. It didn't help that it belonged to my brother and I had no idea where he kept the manual so I had no notion of how to do spells.
I remember trying to play this as a little kid and not being able to get anywhere with it. I’m so glad you’ve uploaded a play through - finally after all these years, I know how the story goes. There’s _no way_ I would’ve figured all that out on my own as a kid!
Yah same. This was very satisfying now after reading these comments I don’t just feel stupid like I was the only one who couldn’t figure it out. Me and my sister tried so hard !!
The worst part is that even if you do know exactly what to do (I never did) is that the length of the wizard's journey, and the order in which he has you do stuff can vary. It's entirely possible to simply not have time to gather everything.
@@Cuzjudd Sierra made extra money with their ‘tip’ lines, and later selling companion guides. Most games a player could stumble through it - this games internal timer and limited number of Manannan journeys made that almost impossible.
Had a copied floppy in the late 80s and got stumped with the spell book. Very clever of the programmers to put the actual spell book in the game's manual. I must have spent hours trying every command to read the spell book, re-exploring the house and the small countryside. I had no idea that this was a game that truly required the manual
You said late 80's, how comes you never got it in the mid 80's in 1986?? My cousin thought he would check the manual for clues before seeing it in one of them game magazines and also from some people posted it on Teletext!
played this on a Tandy 1000 colour growing up, never got past the castle and could never figure out how to walk down mountain. This video revealed all to me I never knew. The player never dumped the chamber pot though! The Tandy we had still turns on, but the DOS startup disk does not :(
My mother completed the game on my PC clone in 1986. It took her months. She was vey pleased with herself I remember. But she loved KQ3. I didn't have the patience to play it. She had started with KQ1, and KQ2, before. She ended up completing all the KQ's up to KQ4.
I bought this game for a friend of mine for his birthday when we were 12 or 13. His mother found out about the game and was not happy because of her religious beliefs. She said the fact that there was a wizard and magic spells in it made it blasphemous. She not only forbid my friend from playing it, she also threw it away. I was only 12 or 13 years old......I had spent my allowance on this......and she tossed it in the trash. I was upset, to say the least.
This game was so hard as a kid. Even with a hint book or manual I couldn't complete it. But I did turn the wizard into a cat, which felt like winning the game to me!! After he killed me so many times!
I remember playing this game before I got my EGA card. It was black and white and very difficult to see anything. I spent so much time playing this game and finally made it through. Thanks for the great walk-through!
Impressive. How in the WORLD did you just beat this entire uncompromising, impossible, evil game without even saving one time? You sir, are a champion.
I actually cried at the end of this game. LOL! When the next one came out I was choked because you required 512K to play it and my computer only had 256K. LMAO! I wish they would come out with games like this for iPad. I'd totally buy them all.
Ha! No kidding! As a kid leaving the house and walking down that curvy path was SUPER hard, let alone the rest of the game! Died so many times on that screen mainly cause of that blind spot where you couldn't see the path. I used to take FOREVER to get through that screen and I'd always save it right after lol.
I have the best memories playing these old Sierra Quest games. In this game, I remember I was stuck on the ship with the rats forever until I got my hands on the cheat guide.
This is my first time hearing the music this way… when I played this years ago, my old computer’s sound card only played one mono music channel at a time. It was charming but clunky… it’s nice to finally hear how it was meant to sound.
I didn't have the manual either. The atmosphere and design of the game was GENIUS, and it was probably designed as an insult to people who pirated the game (as I did), because ironically, if you pirated it you were trapped on the island in just the same was as Gwideon. The wizard is Sierra Games, the pirate is Gwideon
I had the manual. But I couldn't read that well. And on top of that, they misspelled one of the spells in it so I would never be able to beat the game anyway... without the hint guide.

Glad to hear someone else say this! I honestly feel it's the best one. It may have just been my age at the time, but I thought this had the best coherence between setup, story, tensions, logical puzzles. All tied together with the fact that we don't know who we are to begin with, and Manannan keeps us relatively confined to the house area until we begin to understand our situation better, and learn to grab and hide, and ultimately use magical items, to get free.
