  • In this tutorial we'll be teaching you how professional Hollywood editors arrange their timelines for optimal workflow. We'll show you where every piece of media should go from V1 through V9, all the way to A1 through A17.
    It might seem overwhelming at first, but there are many benefits to having an organized timeline whether it's for your personal project or collaborating with a team.
    Disclaimer: The perfect timeline will vary based on your specific situation. This tutorial will give you a solid starting point and once you understand some best practices we encourage you to tweak and modify your own timeline to perfectly fit your needs and style.

      Basicallly the big picture of movie making in general is being super organized. Everything needs to fit somewhere, so that anybody who works with you can find what they will be needing. This is why we use claps in movies- so we can identify the shot. When ingesting all the footage into the computer, you should rename every file so on and on. That is usually the most shittiest part of the job, but you are so happy if it is done, because you can find everything right away. It is actually pure logic. Like in your kichen. Forks with forks, Pans with pans. Spices with spices. And all well organized.

      If I could, didn't see this asked in the comments. But what would the purpose be for the matte later regarding aspect ratio? If that's just adding in letterboxed bars and such, isn't that discouraged now? Shouldn't we be exporting at the aspect ratio we want, not adding in those boxes? Was this just an out-of-date suggestion, or something that's still routinely done now? Sorry, I found this really helpful regarding organization, I just didn't get the purpose of a layer dedicated to a matte box like that.

    • @FilmEditingPro
      @FilmEditingPro  3 года назад

      @@MichaelSheridan it really depends on the specific situation but often for screening purposes the matte is useful to at the very least hide otherwise distracting bits like timecode and other burned-in onscreen data

    As a sound editor, I'd like to point out that we vastly prefer splitting mono and stereo tracks even if your nle can handle mixed formats. When you send us an omf or aaf, every audio track gets duplicated in annoying, unpredictable ways when mixing channel counts in The edit. Pretend you're working on an avid even if you're not and the person working on audio assembly will love you.

      I remember back in 2008 when I learned editing, we've been told: Mono is gold. Mono is the only truth. I wonder if it still is that way. Like I mean... why would you ever wanna work with stereo? This is something I yet have to learn.

    • @petersrin7016
      @petersrin7016 3 года назад +1

      @@Leprutz it is gold. The are some good reasons for stereo - music, designed effects, and ambience do quite well in stereo. Though consider flipping designed effects channels.

    • @petersrin7016
      @petersrin7016 3 года назад +1

      @@Leprutz by the way, almost every sound effect not in the above categories will, in my experience, be made mono by most mixers. For me and I'm sure many others, if we're given a stereo effect we're likely to just trash the left or right side and but the one we kept in the center. Other sounds that we are likely to keep width intact for: certain impacts, debris sweeteners, explosions, anything big (though we also have a separate mono element available if it needs to pan, so you keep the width but also get movement)

    • @Leprutz

    Can I use these principals if I am using Final Cut Pro? or is this work flow specific to a Video Editing software?.
    Thank You.

      Hi Tomasz - absolutely, you can use any modern editing software to apply these techniques. FCP will work great. You’ll just want to adapt things slightly as need based on exactly how your program handles track and clip colors.

    Can someone add in on the difference between editing a film with the matte overlay for a different aspect ratio rather than editing on a timeline with that aspect ratio already applied into the timeline? Thanks! I have a specific ratio in mind for my film, shouldn't I just edit on a timeline sequence with that ratio already applied?

    It can simply be said that avid media is exclusive to large entertainment and film industries, it is unnecessary to use it when you work from home or work that does not require it, premiere pro with After effects is crazy, and even more so with davinci resolve
    also with premiere pro you can get pretty great results like this video...

    The biggest problem is that after all your edit,foley,sound effect,music if there are some changes in the edit then u need to shift every part of the post production element with it which is a real pain and can get messed up..

      Exactly I wonder if there is like a way to go about it that is more efficient, of course saving a copy of the project before any adjustments is smart but yea it can be a very tedious thing depending on how complex and big the project is

    • @travisnapoleansmith
      @travisnapoleansmith 2 года назад +1

      @@machiavellian333 Just duplicate the timeline in the program and work off a copy. I work with AVID so this is easy. I don't know how other editing programs do it.

      @@machiavellian333 if you are removing something that's usually easy smart deleting. If adding something typically selecting everything that comes after works for me. Again the bigger the project the more problematic it is

    I usually have more than 10 audio tracks just for the raw audio from the set. How come your dialog is just 1 track?

    • @FilmEditingPro

      Because some projects will need 1 and others will need 20. Expand and contract necessary tracks as required by the production sources.
