Deeply interesting stuff that has to be thought out by both editors and cinematographers! This helps a ton. Just one question on mind is if these principles are applicable to advertisements and/or tutorial videos for companies (as in a step-by-step setup tutorial for assembling something, etc). If not exactly, it would be interesting to be pointed towards a video (if it already has been made) on principles that could be applied for those!
When we were shooting a short film 📽️ ,we were facing a problem like how to quickly move near and far from actor but now I have known that we should have multiple cameras during shooting.
I'd love to see you go more in depth here. There's lot of subtext in the Harry Potter scene that elevates it beyond a simple coverage formula to tell the story efficiently and in a way that feels natural. For example, they actually reverse screen direction at the moment the Minister imparts a crucial bit of information and then swap back when he backtracks. I love your stuff, but this one seemed a bit simplistic
stupid question maybe, and you may have answered it already, but how many times do they film the same scene to change the camera angle ? or is there 2-4 cameras on sett so they can play the scene one time only if needed? and if so, how to they "cover up" the cameras so they dont interfere with each other?
At 13:55 there's a visualization of the Hero's Journey with video clips. Where can I see the whole clip? Is it featured in another video somewhere? BTW, I love your video lessons. They are informative and easy to follow. Thank you!
My mistake, I was actually looking for the one at 10:26. It looks like it an analysis of The Social Network. It's hard to tell because the clip is angled. But I'd love to see that video.
Thank your sir for sharing this to me too. I am a filmmaking student i am understanding easily the process of filmmaking day by day through ur videos, especially as an editor. i wish to subscribe ur course but not at that stage to purchase. i will keep watching ur vides. all these will help me to eligible to purchase once ..thanks u ..love you..
This has to be the first time I get an ad for a channel while watching another video from the same channel. Should RUclips be advertising your stuff on your stuff?
Question: The director is often thought of as the brains behind the film. They're the ones who have a "vision" for how the film would look like. So I presume the Editor's(& DOP's) work needs the director's approval to be used in the film, right? As a result, if the director doesn't like the way a particular scene is edited, they can simply tell the editor to redo the scene and even give suggestions as to how they'd like it cut. Besides, if the director has a "vision" for how the scene should look like, can't they just tell the Cinematographer and Editor what they want? In this case, how much creative freedom do the DOP and Editor lose(or retain)?
That's a great question. The director's involvement can vary. For example, on a television series or movie franchise a show runner or executive producer will have overarching creative control. They will specifically choose a director that can convey their vision. While the director might have input during editing, the editor will ultimately report to the exec producer for approval. Similarly, the dp will be expected to shoot in pre-established style. Alternatively, if the director has more creative control over the project, he/she might choose to trust his dp or editor's judgement rather than assuming they can do everyone else's jobs better. After all, the dp and editor are expects in their respective fields. Spielberg is an excellent example of a highly skilled director who values and trusts the input of his dp and editors. Directors that exercise control over every aspect of a film's production are often called auteurs. James Cameron is a fantastic example. He has such a clear vision of what he wants and therefore will give very specific instructions to his DP and editor. There's no universal rule as to what is best. In some scenario's a film benefits from the Director's clear and unambiguous direction. In other scenario's the film is made better by the input of collaborative creatives.
@@FilmEditingPro Thank you so much for responding :-) Your answer has made me more curious to learn about these fields. For instance, when an Academy Award for Best Editing/Cinematography is given to someone - I now wonder how much of their output was actually a result of their work rather than inputs from their director.
Try using Resolve. It has a better pipeline for handling colour which will help you take better advantage of those 16-bit files. Depending on the format, you should be able to import the files and start editing without any issues.
Hey I've been producing music for a few years now and these 2 videos are motivating me to challenge myself to try trailer/movie sounds design. These videos were very informative.
