  • Well, Disney has done it for the 60th time. They’ve put out another animated musical that will infect all your karaoke nights and gatherings around pianos with a charming story about family with catchy songs. This time it’s an entirely inhouse story of the Family Madrigal and their magic enchantment that not only protects their village from the outside world but also gives the Family Madrigal special magical powers. Well, except for the central character Mirabel. It’s a heartfelt story that explores the complexity of family relations, the things we hide, and the things we don’t see in our family members and the weight that these things can create for family members. And of course a lyric book from Lin Manual Miranda to round things out. But while the movie is incredibly charming and the story affecting…I wasn’t crying, you were…there are some things that don’t quite add up once the overture fades and the tissues are dispensed. It turns out that one of the reasons to not talk about Bruno is that some things about the family’s erstwhile prognosticator don’t quite add up. That doesn’t even touch on the complicated relationship between Abuela and Mirabel, and why won’t Casita at least give Mirabel her own non-magic room instead of making her stay in the nursery? Let’s look at some of the big questions from Disney’s big 6-0. What did you think didn’t make sense? Let us know in the comments and be sure to like and subscribe for the latest videos in your inbox.

As an example, the version of the movie where no one talks about Bruno after his departure, so there's conflict in the movie, is more interesting than the version where everyone's open about it

    I know no one is even going to read or respond to my comment, since it is not short or phrased like a meme, but:
    I think an alternative interpretation of the primary struggle that makes more sense is that it was not the stress on the family's emotions that was killing the magic. It was that it was being EXHAUSTED, with the Magic being relied upon to do EVERYTHING, while the Family and Townsfolk were not contributing enough of THEMSELVES to replenish it. The candle did not give her powers, because it sensed it needed HER to give it power back in return, and that she was strong enough to do it.
    The Magic did not return until not only the Family, but the whole COMMUNITY gave of themselves to rebuild and replenish the generosity and good will needed to replenish three generations worth of using the magic to solve EVERYTHING without giving from the parts of themselves that did not come from the candle.
    When the house was rebuilt by hand, the goodwill of the whole town recharged the magic.
    That Is how I saw it, anyway.

    • @ranuncudahlia
      @ranuncudahlia 2 года назад +2

      My theory is kind of similar! I interpreted it as a sort of protection of the family, since it was abuelito's sacrifice that created the encanto. As the family as splitting apart (rather than being a cohesive unit, which meant having the freedom to be themselves and give back to the family unit in their own unique ways), the encanto was getting stretched thin.

    Mirabel's door was on the wrong side of the house. When Alma reacts to the door disappearing and the candle flickering, you can see the portraits of everyone's gift ceremony behind her. That's between Abuela's door and *Pepa's* room, so Mirabel's door was on Pepa's side of the house and not Julieta's. The door that disappeared on Mirabel is in the exact same spot as the door that opens for Antonio. On the other side, where Mirabel's door *should* be, next to Luisa's door...is the painting that leads to Bruno's hideout.

  • @HighHeelKnight
    @HighHeelKnight 2 года назад +29

    Numbers 1 and 9 are not mistakes. They are reflections on the culture that the movie is based on.
    1 = Mirabel doesn't get her own room because failing to gain powers meant that she had not come of age. It doesn't matter how old Mirabel becomes. Without completing the... let's say... "maturity ritual"... Mirabel would never get her own room unless she were to marry. If she had lived past her 50s and never married, she would likely still be living in the nursery. It is very possible that she may still be in the nursery of the reconstructed Casita.
    2 = Elders are held in much higher regard in that culture, especially an elder that is the leader of the family. It is extremely inappropriate for children, grandchildren, and descendants to yell at the elders of the community. Not even Abuela's grown children would openly bark defiance at her.
    For Mirabel to be verbally aggressive to Abuela and running away from the family AS WELL AS the conflict destroying what Abuela obsessively feared losing would make Abuela reflect and reconsider the choices she has made.

On the other hand, Delores is an adult by the time she heard Mirabel's secret about Bruno's vision, so she can decide as an adult whether that secret was important to tell the family, and on top of that, she sees that secret as something that can destroy the family, which she know is something that Abuela is particularly afraid of.

For the purpose of making a short visual for the story at the beginning, Abuela is shown standing next to the river a few feet away from Pedro when we are told he was “lost.” Then without her really walking anywhere, the mountains grow and and Casita comes to live and she is nowhere near the river. Then during “Dos Oruguitas,” when they’re aggressors are getting closer, everyone runs away from the river and Pedro goes back. Then when the mountains are growing Abuela could see the River from far away suggesting she watched him get killed from a longer distance than shown at the beginning. So either way they didn’t get their miracle nor Casita right at the location where Pedro was killed so I think we are good on that part😊

    My take is that the Encanto (the area within the protective high mountains) is Abuela’s “room”, because when Mirabel looks into the one with the candle at the window, it’s just a regular room, like Mirabel’s. That said, Mirabel’s gift is her transformative ability, like a cocoon turning a caterpillar into a butterfly. The cracks in Casita began because of Mirabel’s inability to use her gift because Abuela constrains her in order to keep things in her own ways. The finale is literally Mirabel saying they need a new foundation. She is a sort of successor to Abuela.

    The biggest mistake for me is the timeline for Bruno. In 'We don't talk about Bruno' Pepa is signing about her wedding day being ruined. I can only assume Pepa did not have the children at this point, and years later he is still amongst the family and having visions and doesn't leave until Mirabel is 5, and we know both Camillo and Delores are older than Mirabel... so for almost a decade Bruno couldn't have said 'it wasn't a prophecy I could just see you were sweatin' and calm that whole thing down??? The song makes it sound like he was immediately shunned after the wedding but he was around for at least 10 more years as Delores is about 5 years older than Mirabel is.

    Casita is a sentient magical house, why is the magic only present on the surface-space? you'd think a magical house won't need a crawl space that looks about as decrepit as any other crawl space, so if the Casita can create a room that looks bigger on the inside, why didn't it give Bruno that luxury of making his crawl space much nicer or larger.

      The way Isabela flipped her hair at Mirabel early on in the movie, giving her a piece of sisterly "advice" by telling her to be helpful when Mirabel is literally carrying a big basket full of things is definitely a clear first indication of their tense relationship, and also how Mirabel tells her mom how Isabela never has a bad hair day is another indication of how she sees her sister. And not to mention the annoyed look on Mirabel's face when she sees Isabela descend on the swing as she sings her part in "We Don't Talk About Bruno" says it all about how she's fed up with her seemingly perfect sister. Also, there's Isabela shouting "I hate you!" at Mirabel after the dinner with Mariano was ruined because Dolores told everyone around the table about Mirabel's fate and the potential danger it could put Casita in. It isn't until "What Else Can I Do" when Mirabel reluctantly hopes to get a hug from Isabela in order to save the magic of Casita, that's also when she sees what Isabela truly struggles with and she gets a whole new respect for her.

    I'm one who often finds annoying inconsistencies in films but have to disagree with some of these. The one regarding Bruno not knowing how deep the pit is could be as simple as it's a new hole created by the deteriorating casita. And when Delores says 'I can hear him now' she's referring to Mariano the 'love of her life' Bruno prophesies will be betrothed to another (ie Isabel).
    My biggest gripe with this film is that Mirabel wears glasses and isn't healed by her mum. I know they say it's because it's not seen as an injury/disability but imagine if a character was in a wheelchair and hadn't been healed. While I, a disabled person who uses a wheelchair, would love this, there would be uproar from most of the population as to why the magic didn't heal that person. Don't get me wrong, I think it's great they have the main character wearing glasses, I just think with the chosen magical abilities it was maybe the wrong film to do this. I still wait the day we get a main character with a disability who isn't either the villain or the saint, but I'm not holding my breath (I mean, it took this long to have someone with glasses?).

    • @gabeangel8104
      @gabeangel8104 2 года назад +3

      With the glasses, I think it’s simply that Mirabel is perfect just the way she is, glasses and all, to her mum. Her mum has to choose to make a recipe specifically to heal a specific thing so she wouldn’t make a recipe to heal something that she sees as just a trait of her child.
      I agree with you that it would be amazing some day to have a disabled character, especially if the disability was not made a big deal but was just part of who the character was, no big ‘overcoming adversity’ story or anything. As disabled people, we so rarely get to see ourselves represented in stories and on screen unless it’s part of some pity party, moral story, or ‘inspiration p*rn’.

    • @anyawillowfan
      @anyawillowfan 2 года назад

      @@gabeangel8104 Yeah it seems disabled people are either saints or villains with no inbetween. And I agree that she's perfect just the way she is, but I also know that if someone was born without a limb everyone would have an issue with the magic not healing them (despite bad eye sight being just as disabling without the use of glasses). • @marianap7015

      The magic started being affected after Mirabel didn’t get her gift. At Antonio’s party Abuela treats Mirabel like a complete liar yet that same night she prays they don’t loose their Miracle. As the protector of the candle, Abuela knew that there was something wrong all along and thought having a stronger grip on the family would somehow save it. My guess is that the cracking had been going on for years but never as visibly to everyone else like the night Mirabel first noticed it. This is because the tensions between some members of the family were only getting stronger during the time the movie takes place. Only Bruno would’ve noticed the cracks because they starter with the house’s foundation like problems with the family had to do with their foundation as a family. That’s why in the song at the ending they talked about having a “new foundation” even if it’s not perfect (referring to the house and themselves).
