      She did receive a gift, just not at the time everyone expected. And IMO, she always had a gift of bringing forth truth (which is not always something wanted or pleasant, but always necessary). Just by being herself she was able to get hidden truths from her sisters, truth from Bruno, truth from everyone around her...

    Mirabel also doesn’t have a typical “pet” in the movie to make her a Disney Princess. Pico doesn’t really count since he’s only there momentarily and flies away. And as a glasses wearer, I was very happy to see a Disney main character with glasses and I was happy to see her deal with some of the struggles with glasses (pushing them up, them getting tilted when hugged, etc.)

    • @oliviakozielec1146

      I agree her "pet" was the house. It helped her, she was totally in sync with it. The other relied on their powers to do what they needed to do she relied on the casita. This is VERY evident in the scene she tried to get to the candle and save it and gets to it where everyone else fails and the casita pushes them all out but protects Maribel instead and helps her reach her goal. Maribel seems to be the only one capable of commanding the casita to do something as long as it isn't against her grandmother. Even then I wonder who Casita would listen to if they both gave conflicting demands.

    If you watch the scene where Isabella gets scared from hearing "he wants 5 babies" and generates flowers in her hair. Most are the normal perfect pink and purple flowers, but one WHITE daisy. (She lost control of her perfect persona) and abuela sees it and has a look of concern and picks it off her hair as she says "perfect isabella". Another cool hint at the family drama!

    @bendoucet8641 2 года назад +3627

    Another Small Detail:
    Each of the powers of the Madrigal triplets (Julieta, Pepa and Bruno) is tangental to the passage of time. Julieta's gift is that of healing, which reverts one to a past healthier state. Pepa's emotions effect the present weather conditions. Lastly, Bruno is able to see into the future.
    This also lines up with the order of their birth, Julieta being first born, Pepa the middle child and Bruno being the youngest.
    Edit: To a certain extent this even goes further into their personalities and characters. Julieta is the closest tied to the family's traditions and strives for her daughters to find their place in it. Pepa's intense emotions have a tendency to change from moment to moment, rarely lingering for too long. Bruno's always worrying about his own 'bad luck' and constantly tries to curb it with throwing salt and knocking on wood; worrying about what the future holds for him.

    • @theoriginalsache
      @theoriginalsache 2 года назад +102

      @@kappa_studios That's definitely a possible reading, but it has roots in old superstition (throwing salt and knocking on wood are ways to ward off bad luck) and if you live your whole life being told how unlucky you are, well, I can see those habits being picked up as a way to try to communicate to people, "See! I'm not unlucky!" Basically, symptoms of deep-seated trauma. It's demonstrated by the time we meet up with him that his self-esteem is in the toilet and years of isolation have made him go a little batty. So, less stim and more a compulsion. He probably genuinely believes he has to do those things to counteract the curse that he feels is his very existence, even if he knows that superstition isn't real.

    If you're wondering why Mirabel didn't get a gift at the end of the movie, here's why: It would defeat the whole purpose. Mirabel never wanted a gift, she just wanted to feel like part of her family. The entire point was that the people were more than their gift, that the gift didn't define them and it wasn't as important as them themselves. If Mirabel had received one, she would no longer be living proof that you didn't need a gift to be special.

(the fact that she is a gifted seamstress showing how she ties the family together) The movie shows her placing her two sisters customized ones down (showing how she was going to connect with them) and then the grandmas which catches on fire. Mirabel's gift was to bring balance to all the family members who were not happy. Bruno was gone and not apart of the family, the others were under pressure, over stressed, or unhappy. The grandma saw Mirabel in an unfavorable light thinking she was the end to their "encanto", thus making her unhappy and then Mirabel's mom unhappy to see her daughter sad. The family although together was growing apart. Only Mirabel could bring the issues to the surface and confront them head on. She gave up on making her abuela proud and instead spoke the truth that needed to be heard. Only then could their unhappiness be fixed and they become freer and happier.

    Also, don’t forget that the reason she doesn’t have a “gift” to save the family, aside of Abuela’s perspective, is because everyone have been so consumed with their own gifts they are forgetting their place in the family. That’s why Mirabel is so close to casita. She’s not overpowered by a “gift” that she can see what everyone is dealing with and what needs to be taken care of.
    Foreshadow:
    Casita holds the family together (physically)> Mirabel takes care of Casita (emotional connection) > Mirabel have been and will be taking care of the family and holds it together (mentally and emotionally).

    Butterfly has something to do with Mirabel, if you watched the credits, you'll see the original Design of Mirabel's door, it has a butterfly in it. Mirabel also sounds similar to Miracle and I think it is a foreshadow that Mirabel is the miracle itself. Also, another evidence that Mirabel is the miracle is that when she put the knob in the entrance door, it lit up like their rooms, the family's portrait is also the image in the door and it makes me think that if Abuela is the keeper of the candle, Mirabel is the keeper of the house. I also noticed that only Mirabel and Abuela talk to the house.
    I also noticed that in Abuela's time, the candle saved them and it appeared on her door, it became her gift and in Mirabel, it was the butterfly, the butterfly was the one who saved them and guided her and it also appeared on her door

    I really liked that someone with no magic actually saved the day. I feel like in a lot of movies, even ones without magic, there has to be something special about the character. That was my biggest issue with the new Mulan, it felt like she wasn’t the ordinary girl who worked hard and became the same as the guys. In the new one she HAD to have something special about her to do the job. In Encanto, I had the same feeling here as I did about the original Mulan movie: not everyone is special, and that’s okay. You might have to work harder, but you can still be just as important and make an impact. As the kid who grew up never really having a niche they were exceptional in, and even as an adult, it’s nice to see those types of characters.

I def agree with u thats its ok not to be special, its okay not to be the main character, etc. im so sick of movie tropes nowadays that a person has to be this powerful amazing hero in the first place in the beginning (Mulan and other trying hard feminists in disney live remakes) and not have to work for anything... it doesnt have the same impact as a nobody at the start who works hard to become their best versions in the end.

    Mirabel was meant to be the next keeper of the house/magic. That’s why she didn’t get a door right away. Abuela wasn’t ready yet to let anyone else but her protect what they were given, so she didn’t accept Mirabel. Once Abuela and her finally made up and she was truly accepted into the family, she was able to open the door to the house for everyone else, meaning she was taking on the role of the next keeper. The magic was disturbed when both keepers were at odds, and ended up being destroyed. The old house was gone, and once they rebuilt it and she touched the door, it became the new house with her as the protector.

      That was exactly what I thought. Abuela was the keeper of the miracle, but she was not going to last forever so the candle had to pass to another keeper. Mirabel was chosen as the next keeper. That is why only abuela and Mirabel can hold the candle and why their rooms where in front of each other. Abuela was holding on too tight to the magic and her desire to have control, so as a result Mirabel's door did not light up the first time.

    Mirabel’s present to Antonio before his ceremony had all of the animals on the box. She told Antonio, “I know you’re an animal guy.” The actual gift was a stuffed leopard that looked exactly like the real leopard that came to live with him after he got his gift. This suggests the candle gave gifts based on the characters personalities. Also, Mirabel was very perceptive and could see all of her family’s true gifts. She is the candle and the only family member who didn’t need a gift. Mirabel is the only one who could make the candle shine brighter.

      Don’t ever forget that. Guerrillas were really never the main problem because the problem continued, like the drug dealing didn’t end up with Escobar and the forced displacement didn’t end up with the FARC dismanteling.
      This movie is based in “realismo mágico” and One Hundred Years Of Solitude is based on the banana massacre that was perpetuated by paramilitaries financed by the US State Department to end the strike of the workers of Chiquita Brand.

    Mirabel really is Abuela’s counterpart; opposite views and doors but both wanting to save the home and the family. I think she didn’t get a gift because she was meant to take Abuela’s place as protector of Casita, hence her ‘door’ being the literal front door to the home. Both are strongly motivated by family, both are intensely loyal. The theme of trauma and inter-generational processing of that trauma is also interesting. Abuela has seen the worst that can happen to a family, a burden she alone carries. Sharing with Mirabel helps her understand why her grandma is the way she is and Abuela understands how her fear meant she let down her granddaughter when she should have supported her. It seems the big theme of the movie, other than family acceptance and love, is communication.

    The gifts each person receives seems to be an enhanced version of a passion or hobby what they already have. I know Antonio is the only one we see before receiving his gift, but there is strong implication that he has a love for animals even before he gets his gift, Mirable gifts him a toy she made and calls him her "animal guy"
    Then using that same logic of hobby tying to their gift, when we look at Mirable she is cover in different threads, colors and embroidery representing here love to create and make things her own. (She even wears little pompoms as earrings) Her love for sowing, embroidery and thread become a physical representation when she later TIES the family together.
    Mirable's outfit is covered with different colors of thread, each one could be a representation of a family member. This just further shows her love of her family and how she brings them together not only in the end but metaphorically as well through the colored threads intertwining on her clothes.

    Some things I noticed:
    The song "What Else Ean I Do?" Is also a nod to Frozen, as it's kind of the "Let It Go" of Encanto, with the bursts of magic and the one singing it finally being free to explore their power after being stuck.
    The reason Luisa is with donkeys a lot is because they're an animal of burden, they carry the weight, like Luisa.
    Dolores is almost always whispering, until she loses her power or is singing what Bruno told about her future. She also holds her ears during the big celebrations.
    In "We Don't Talk About Bruno," after their verses on their future, you can hear Dolores and Isabella saying "I'm fine" or "I'll be fine," though faint.
    Abuela has a black shawl with throughout most of the movie, symbolizing still not recovered from the loss of her husband.
    During the first song, "Madrigal Family," Mirabell sings, "full of stars and everyone gets to shine"(or something like that) and in the last song "All Of You," she sings, "you're all stars that want to shine, but stars dont shine they burn"( or something like that-)
    And finally-
    Isabella had the most pressure to be perfect because she looked the most like Abuela did, and Mariano also kind of looked like the Abuelo(sp?). She was also most likely at least slightly jealous of Mirabell, since she could go and do whatever she wanted

    • @marylally693
      @marylally693 2 года назад +4

      Yes, and not only Isabella was the one who looked the most like Abuela, but in the scene where Bruno was able to see the full vision of Mirabel's future, both Mirabel and Bruno confused Abuela with Isabella. The vision was showing that to save the house Mirabel had to love her abuela. (with whom she always antagonized) but she thought it was Isabelle because they looked alike so much

    Also, in each branch of the family, they have a kinda specific color or shade they wear, for example Pepa, her husband, and their kids wear yellow, and Mirabel’s family wear blue, with the exception of Isabel for most of the movie when she wears a light purple dress, which is a bit like a combination of Mirabels “family color”, and how Abuela wears pink, and Isabel seems a lot like Abuela’s favorite grandchild. Just something I noticed!

      It's a little harder to tell, but the Madrigal women's clothing all tie back to Abuela in some way. Julieta's family all have scalloped edges on their clothing - Mirabel's is most noticeable on her white blouse (notice how it's like a larger version of the collar on Abuela's dress and Mirabel's is also trimmed in black - kind of like being the black sheep of the family). Luisa has smaller, more pointy scallops on her blouse and Isabela has the scallops on her sleeves. Pepa and Dolores both wear yellow, the shade of which matches the petals on Abuela's collar. Also, Pepa's veil has scalloped edges on it.

    I love the strong floral motif carried throughout the movie mirroring the family conflict. Flowers tend to be thought of as a soft and delicate but some are capable of growing almost anywhere, like cracks in a sidewalk and some are, as Isabela points out, carnivorous even if they look pretty. Obviously flowers also serve as food and shelter for insects and fit in with the change and rebirth theme. Some species, like fireweed, grow well in the ashes of a fire. Although I do find it interesting that Antonio is the only male (besides Mirabel's father) whose clothing carries on that motif, but only when he's getting his gift.

    I get it now Abuela was praying for a miracle. The miracle that the house (their safe haven) wouldn’t be taken away from her or her family. Without realizing til the end that Mirabel is the miracle she is the glue to the house and the family. Her gift is that she keeps both up but her and Abuela’s conflict completely destroyed the foundation (and hurt mirabel internally). So they needed to literally, from the ground up, create a new foundation in unison together.

    Casita's power doesn't work inside the family's respective doors. We see this when Mirabel goes into Bruno's door/room and Casita cannot "follow" her. Casita deliberately didn't give Mirabel a room of her own but kept her in the neutral "nursery" room. Once she touches the candle, the doorway disappears and instead she is fused to Casita's power.
