long time followers of the channel will probably be quite confused by the fact that I'm covering Sonic frontiers today. I've admitted multiple times to never really haven't gotten into the series. To me Sonic has always come across like how pro wrestling must come across to non-wrestling fans. A strange subculture that inspires the most Diehard loyalty for reasons that nobody seems to be able to fully understand. And much like wrestling it's the type of thing that if you didn't get into it at an early age or don't have a predisposition for liking it, it's a bit of a tough sell. With that said, why am I covering it? Yeah, this wasn't really my idea, but as they say, in for a penny in for a pound. I just want to say first of all that since I in no way have an encyclopedic knowledge of this series, I'm definitely going to get some things wrong. So you know, do it that what you will. This does mean that I can only judge this game based on what it does and what's on the screen, and not for its Insider references, it's attempts to pander and so on. This is their chance to sell me on the series. So how did that work out? Not Well!
Special thanks to ‪@KingKlonoa‬ ‪@JsReviews‬ ‪@JebZone‬ and ‪@TheRyanSucksAtGames‬ for guest starring in this video. I hate you all for making me play this game.

I think you're right about the low standards. When I played Frontiers I was judging the game as a Sonic game and not as I would any other game. I had mentally forgiven the game for all the pop-in because it was a Sonic game, even though there's really no reason to do that for a high profile game that this game bills itself as.
The best thing you can say about Frontiers is that the general structure of the game is a good idea and puts everything into context. But that doesn't magically fix the fact that almost all individual aspects of the game are lacking in some significant way. Except for the music. The music is good.

The idea of sonic being up to standards is kinda a shaky one for me. Because on one hand, yes sonic frontiers is not at the standard of a tripe A game. But on the other hand, I also think of other triple A games that also got mix reviews like Halo Infinite, Bayonetta 3, the latest Pokémon and I don’t see them treated with the same severity by the rest of the public outside of their communities. People are willing to be forgiving with a game like cyberpunk 2077 despite all its problems, I don’t see why it can be the same for this game. They realized they can give Sonic Team a Small Budget to make a 3 hour game, and then sell it at around $40 and make a huge Profit off the Sonic Fans who will buy anything they put out. You’re mistaken in the case of Frontiers, SEGA didn’t care about it either. They wanted to Release this game in 2021, in an Even Worse state than it was when it released. Think about it, Bayonetta 2, a game SEGA REFUSED to publish due to "poor sales" of the first game, outsold Sonic Flop World and Sonic Bust COMBINED, whilst being confined to the same (failing) console. Sonic fans, contrary to popular belief, are simply not enough to keep this series financially relevant. They can do all the hacking they want, whining, you name it, they're just not financially viable. Appealing to them is NOT a sustainable business strategy. SEGA should have caught on to this a decade ago when those two games I mentioned failed...
And are you SURE Sega put nothing into this particular turd? I mean in the video game industry, time kinda does equate to budget. The sonic fandom isn't blood hating about criticism about this game. They didn't make a new engine for this game (which is what they probably should've done). Instead, using the "Hedgehog Engine". It took 5 years to change how the engine lighting looks. If not a new engine, then heavy re tooling of the existing one.
Updates 2 and 3 tried fixing some things like cyberspace controls, adding movement styles, the for some reason, infinite parry (literally nobody liked that).
The writer for this game spent years writing for the sonic comics, and the call backs are something he basically does almost every story. Which suffers anyway because the sonic franchise has guidelines on what the characters can be and how deep the story can go.
While yes, Sonic fans are happy, it's not just jetting down a hallway. We also all agree this definitely needs more fixing. Which says something because this was as much they could do with sega pushing back the game.
I'm thankful for the ambition the games team had, but if they toned it back a little to where fixes wouldn't be so hard.
But since Sonic is infact a budget title, Sega will not give more money or more time
Pannels and rails floating everywhere are also seen as annoyance.
In the end, if they're really going to continue Open Zone, then the engine they have needs severe changes to its handling of practically everything.
This game is a start to something Sonic fans have wanted, but not the way it should've been handled.

Generations was a solid game, but that narrative was pretty lackluster much like how Colours was and it really felt like it got worse with Lost World and then Forces, with the boom series fad just kinda existing between.
Seems like they as a company have no idea what direction to actually take so they throw things at a dart board trying to make it stick while fans grow frustrated and just pray for some consistency soon.
I personally like a lot of what Frontiers does, especially in terms of going a different direction from the last main entries, but I can't help but feel like both the talent behind the narrative and the gameplay itself could've been guided by better leadership.
Hopefully the leadership's confidence in a solid direction gets cemented soon so the games get better. But it seems sega can't help stirr up some controversy in the meantime.

But on the other hand, I also think of other triple A games that also got mix reviews like Halo Infinite, Bayonetta 3, the latest Pokémon and I don’t see them treated with the same severity by the rest of the public outside of their communities. And I gotta be honest, I think that they are aspects in those games that are worst than frontiers.

Just curious because when i look at frontiers i see a directionless eye sore with fairly mediocre level design(copy and paste) and an under cooked combat system. The only thing i see people unanimously praise is the boss fights but i dunno that seems like players grasping for any excitement they can find. When you strip all the pomp and circumstance away the bosses are pretty basic button mash quick time stuff. I boil it down to it's fun to run fast in an open world i just wish the world had been designed with any kind of expertise.

    • @Frank-zb7zh
      @Frank-zb7zh 9 месяцев назад +2

@@Gabbagool86 With the exception of halo infinite that is an open world game similar to frontiers every other game has its own issues related to their own gameplay style or technical issues. For example, the latest Pokémon game had so many technical issues that had to be temporarily taken off store until it could be updated, and graphically it still doesn’t look good even compare to frontiers. Then there is Bayonetta 3, also lacking in the graphical department but not as bad as Pokémon or frontiers, but still inferior considering it’s a more linear game, with the inclusion of intrusive 2d stealth segments that are just not fun and interrupt the action of the game, but the main problem with Bayonetta 3 is the combat or rather the interruption of the combat with a new mechanic that summons giant monster to fight for her, and it looks cool but is no where near as fulfilling because it’s just mashing bottoms while having a fixated camera including when you have to use them for puzzle solving, playing as Viola who just feels like Bayonetta light and pretty simple platforming in simple mini open worlds, even more simple than frontiers, and a minor thing but the story of that game is like the opposite of frontiers where the characters don’t really act as characters but props reacting unrealistically to what’s happening around them.
Last is the game that frontiers has more things in common, halo infinite (campaign), witch I find that that games main problem is a lack of diversity. For starters, if it weren’t for the grappling hook this game would be near unplayable, in both traversing the world and combat. The world itself of infinite is fine designed but what one does in it is very repetitive, there are submissions and collectibles but to reach them it’s just the use of repetitive gun combat, which while not as repetitive as frontiers combat, at least frontiers keeps me more occupied with a larger variety of platforming challenges, and as a collectaton, I find that while some of the challenges are a little to automated (specially the 2d ones) a lot of others give me the freedom to solve them as I want to reach the goal, specially with the use of the spin dash, in halo is just different flavors of gun without the fast gameplay of games like Doom. Even the world lacks diversity with with only one biodome used for it, while frontiers is criticize when it’s using 3, even if the art style of both games is nothing to write home about (and frontiers has weather variety). Even in the parts of the game that take place inside a base, there is little that stands out, I argue that the cyberspace levels are more memorable. Now I can’t mention which game has the biggest enemy variety, but I will mention that I find frontiers has a better variety of mini bosses that require a unique way to fight them, unlike halo that it’s just a buff normal enemy also solve with gun. This is also a problem for the main bosses, that for the most part are also buffs enemy’s playing a game of hide and seek, at least frontiers bosses stand out from each other and have spectacle. Also frontiers has two endings to its story, while Halo infinite by the end it feels it’s starting one. And the music, call me buyest but frontiers has the better soundtrack.
There are other games I could mention, like Jedi survivor and the amount of technical issues that kept the game crushing constantly, where some people couldn’t review it or Callisto Protocol as a whole.
And again I don’t say this because I think Frontiers is a vastly superior game (although I argue that the updates did make the game stand out more with a proper respond to feedback), but rather as counter argument to the whole point of sonic having an special treatment in the industry. Yes, fans will hype up small things that mean a lot to them but that’s also the case for the fans of the rest of this games, and yes, the problems of this games isn’t something that we should take as acceptable, and yes, sonic team and sega have a lot to proof. But sonic is not an special case, I even argue that if we treated all games like we treat sonic games then we would be in a very different industry.

I mean, yeah, sure it's a happy-go-lucky cast of critters with merch and supplementary media "aimed" towards children or long time fans. But taking a step back and looking at it as the flagship IP for Sega; a company that pushed gaming forward, then fell from grace and picked themselves up to being a incredibly reputable publisher in the last half of a decade. They really seemed to bottleneck the developers on Frontiers.
It's their mascot, yet there's this sense of them probably not caring if the game flopped because they have bigger, more polished projects to publish. It's kind of sad, but understandable. I know TBP is coming at this game from someone who isn't a fan of the franchise, so its not his fault, but Sonic fans do this to themselves. Sonic fans need to stop fucking buying the games just to be like "Wow this is bad! I hope the next one is better!" just like the EA sports games, why would they change anything or try at all when people buy it no matter what? I think Sonic Team is partially to blame as well, they just don't know what to do with the games so every new game is something very different and you never know what to expect, and Sega just doesn't care as long as a half finished Sonic game can be pushed out in time for the holidays.

I'm a long time Sonic fan, started with the very first one on Sega Mega Drive, and even though I haven't played Sonic Frontiers I can understand your points here.
Sonic games have been problematic for a looong time and I think I can sum up the problem in one question:
    What makes Sonic games Sonic?
When I say Sonic, I can predict what possibly comes to your mind:
    - Speed.
    - Gotta Go Fast.
    - Linear Platforming.
    - Time Trials.
    - Sonic is the game's main character.
These can be true, but I have experienced a'lot more from other games.
For example exploration and finding secret rooms.
Different robots with Pokedex like background info.
Other characters. (Did you know that Tails has his own games?).
Not to mention that if you check out Sonic Mega Collection and Sonic Gems Collection, you'll see that like Mario, Sega has tried different games with Sonic.
End result may not been a success in most cases, but they have been at least interesting experiences.
So I think Sonic is suffering from the similar curse like Bela Lugosi And Sega hasn't been able to find a way out of this.
Most games becoming these very dividing among fans, that has made making the next one more and more problematic.
So hopefully you'll understand why Sonic games are these oddballs, that can be more or less confusing.
    Also P.S.
Don't take this as an rant directed against you, Sonic or Sega.
I just wanted to share my point of view with you, since you are new with Sonic games and to give you some picture of series's history.

Then I have heard many people talk about this thing many times, some being long time fans and others not being familiar with the series or characters.
Also I'm a long time fan of Sonic series.
I've encountered this topic again and again and again. It's nothing new for me.

(sorry in advance for the length lol) A lot of the game's problems ultimately come down to *incredibly situational* constraints the developers had from SEGA's idiotic corpo higher ups. Sonic is a franchise where context matters A LOT for the development cycle of these games because they've never really had the standard AAA budgets (excluding Unleashed) most people perceive that a series as big as Sonic should realistically have (and granted, if they have, then they sure as hell don't do a great job using the budget lmao.) The issue with that though, is that an average gamer who isn't a Sonic fan isn't going to care enough to go out of their way to look up or much less care about said context for games they found unenjoyable in the first place.
The stigma that Sonic fans wanted to change with Frontiers was to showcase to SEGA that they *desperately* need to give Sonic Team a bigger development team, budget, and less marketing deadline constraints. Going from Forces to Frontiers, this is why Sonic fans are being *incredibly* loud about Frontiers being "peak Sonic" because it's the first instance in almost *15 years* where this statement has been relatively close to being true (within the self-contained context of the series as a whole.) It's Sonic fans screaming "SEGA, give us more of this please!" as a way to get them to listen, even if it means ignoring/ shooting down criticisms from people who don't like Frontiers almost altogether. It's like you said, a game like Frontiers has potential, but at the same time, Sonic fans don't want SEGA to try to redefine Sonic AGAIN by ditching Frontiers' gameplay style completely. They tried it with Lost World, failed, then tried to replicate old success with Forces (and we all know how that turned out)

I do understand this sentiment, but I think the fault in encouraging more of this is that they’re also encouraged to make another game that is extremely unpolished and looks unfinished because of low standards.
You can praise the good things while acknowledging that this was not something they should be proud of selling for $60 after 5 years of development. It’s actually more concerning what they’d do with LESS time.

@@Bbyboy777 Well yeah, that's my entire point. There's a disconnect between SEGA's higher ups and Sonic Team itself that causes these issues to come up in the first place. Forces was a $40 game on launch after only 1.5 years of development, but was beatable in less than a single afternoon despite waiting 3 years between it and Lost World. It ultimately boils down to the ridiculous time and budget restraints SEGA has put on Sonic Team post-Unleashed. The expectation V.S reality of what Sonic fans expect from Sonic Team and what the average consumer expects are radically different *because* of this context entirely.
Like I said, SEGA has been known to make Sonic Team ditch gameplay styles completely when they don't live up to the asinine critical or financial expectations SEGA has. SEGA even considered Frontiers receiving 8/10s from critics a let-down. But Sonic fans get defensive about Frontiers because it's the first game since Generations in 2011 (*twelve years ago*) that has a decent amount of potential to become good if SEGA actually *allows* Sonic Team the time and money needed to realize that potential. Even the 3rd update proved this to be the case (for both good and bad reasons). The financial success of Frontiers, however, has finally allowed Sonic Team to receive the proper restructuring it needs to actually MAKE the kind of game Frontiers *should've* been. It's not that Sonic Team is being encouraged to make a buggy game with even less development time than Frontiers. No sane fan wants that. The fans are simply afraid that SEGA and Sonic Team will listen to the wrong criticisms AGAIN (which is how games like Lost World, Boom, and Forces happened in the first place), so they defend Sonic Frontiers specifically with their whole chest. There's a lot of nuance between Takashi Iizuka VS SEGA higher ups that unfortunately gets overlooked by most people because it's not exactly common knowledge. Of course, there will always be very young and loud fans who defend all the wrong things about Frontiers due to immaturity, but those people do not make up the majority of how Sonic fans actually feel about this game.
It's not a perfect game formula, but it's one that doesn't deserve to get deleted & not further expanded upon because SEGA listened to the wrong criticisms. Again.

my stance on the game is this: it has flaws however its still pretty fun to play and its a good step in the right direction for sonic for starters i like how they are trying a more serious story after what happened in the 2010s and they finally fixed the characterization for sonic and his friends also sonics overall moveset is pretty fun especally when you unlock the spindash and can fly off of terrain like ramps i also like how they went for a more realistic artsyle this time unlike forces and lost world the music is also really good (no suprise there considering its sonic) one thing they should do for the next game is add a bit more momentum to sonic because outside of the spindash and jump he dosnt really have any overall though id give the game around a 8-9/10 a pretty good attempt however there is still room for improvement and since they said that future sonic games are gonna be built off this game im optomistic

I get that this is a thing with almost every Sonic Team game but someone really needs to reign the team in from just haphazardly making a bunch of mechanics and get them to focus on a couple that they know they can reasonably polish up and make a game around. This game feels and looks like a tech demo and it's honestly a miracle that it did so well despite that.

It did well because of the state the Sonic franchise is in. As much as you want, you really can't take Sonic games as Triple A titles. Ever since Sonic Colors, Sonic games started having a limited budget and simplistic design. So simple in fact that you can say even other older platformers were more complex. I think that Sonic Team started shrinking its scope for future Sonic games because they wanted to please the fanbase. It kinda worked with games like Colors and Generations, but then even the fans grew tired of this simplicity. The point is that Sonic games nowadays have a lesser scope in terms of complexity and production to avoid the huge risks that could permanently kill the franchise, considering that 2 previous risks did severe damage to it. Frontiers honestly can't be compared to other Triple A games because of the minimal scope approach Sega uses. As a fan, I can say this game is a step in the right direction for the Franchise, it just needs a bigger budget and production time.

Heck, they managed to implement grinding almost anywhere and these splines don’t feel out of place most of the time, you’re pretty much playing with the whole scenery at times, wish Frontiers didn’t feel tacked on like that

      2. Lack of full on spectacle, while yeah your fighting a giant beast they don't really do nothing besides fire projectile or swing at you and their isn't any spectacle in the cutscenes and qte.
      3. Lack of difficulty, assuming you didn't level up your rings, you have 400 seconds to beat a boss and your immortal do you their isn't much to adapt to besides parrying. The bosses don't challenge you in anyways that's tense and skillful and their second phases don't offer anything new or dynamic to the fight leaving it rather pale

Watching this video as a fan who considers Frontiers to be the top 1 Sonic game was really interesting. First off, just wanna say, this video was presented and scripted really well to give the game a fair shot. There is a few instances where there is a noticeable lack of research but overall this video was made well enough.
Anyhow, your thoughts on the story: I honestly fully agree with most of your points on it, but I do think you looked at some points in too much of a linear fashion. Quick example would be your statement about how Sage and Eggman don't really add anything plot wise, and yeah, in this 1 game basis, them being here wouldn't have mattered, but it matters a shit ton in the grand scheme of things. When people praise Frontiers story, most of us don't really care about the whole backstory or the evil god demon, but we are more so glad about the Status quo finally changing. Your point of "This story isn't really that good unless Sonic is all you play" is actually a great expression. Eggman and Sage don't add anything plot wise, but seeing the old doctor actually form a bond with a new original character felt incredibly refreshing.
Moving on to your points about the controls/the combat system: from a casual player perspective, I fully agree that the systems feel either too robotic, too easy or too dumbed down to have any real substance, but the beauty is unironcally in the jank. It's like SSBM, the game is only mechanically rich because 80% of the depth comes from pure jank and unintended physics behavior that the devs left in for fun. You brought up the fact that rails don't interact with the speed you had before touching them, but they actually do if they are slightly slanted downwards. A fun thing I like to do is Spin dash into a rail I know is slightly angled downwards, then power boost jump (since that also keeps your momentum) then right before I hit the ground by a few frames, I buffer a spin dash to keep the speed going. Another huge example is Chaos Island. On my first playthroughs it was a boring 2D fest with way overly complicated ways to traverse through its various sections, with the janky ground making fly all over the place...but once you know how the launching works, you open up Pandora's box and can just skip over the tedious 2D and whatnot. This is why I also heavily disagree with your point that the stages feel disconnected from the actual Sonic object stuff, because once you master the weird parts of it, it all just clicks. Random cliffs that before randomly stopped you from progressing become launch pads and opportunities to do some really fun skips. Thing is, none of this was intentional, but the fans loved that shit so much that in Update 2 (released in June 23rd) added an option to remove the deceleration while jumping (from both open zone and cyberspace), pretty much making those high level skips accessible to everyone. Add that with the spin dash, and everything just...works. The islands no longer become empty sandboxes with a bunch of mini levels, they become full on playgrounds where not a single object is truly out of reach. As for the combat, the fun part isn't trying to be stylish or to gain points, but to speedrun that shit. Like, yeah, could you just use the Sonic boom attack to win every encounter? True, you could, and you proved it, but you can also beat every enemy in the Arkham games by just repeatedly countering, or just running away, getting a stealth kill, get caught then repeat. The fun isn't the actual difficulty, but rather how fast you can clear out a room. Finding out individual strats for every enemy was really fun and seeing just how fast I can nuke over an entire room. Now, you could argue that this is a pointless argument to make since the game never rewards you for this...but it does. Granted, its post game content, but there is a time attack where you have to fight every single enemy type in the game back to back to back, so knowing how everything works is crucial to winning during these fights.
One last thing: about the visual design, the Switch version removed a lot of the ATD that you asked for. Like the whole "just make sonic make markings in the sand during the Shark chase" is a thing in every other version, and the environmental pop in is also a cause of the switch version. Though, that being said, the object pop in is just as bad in all the other versions. Hell, Update 3's new content has some HORRENDOUS pop in that's even worse than the main game lmao.
Anyway, great video, was a lot of fun watching it.

Aswell as having a friend who knows the series like the back of his hand, and he found some points of the game to be not all that great himself, and i even tried to give some suggestions to figure out some puzzles that were too cryptic.

For me I think Sonic Frontiers was focused on the Cyber Levels especially. I think that was what they really dedicated most of the time to but just as it was with other Sonic games, those kind of levels weren't enough and they needed something to make the game longer and worth the price. Fans have been yelling that open world sonic could work because this or that fangame did it so they added it here. I think the story has been better than their last few in the games but it seems to be a victim to the open world by being sliced up so much and not being long enough to explain things for newer people playing Sonic. Sonic is known for his adventures being mostly ones you can join in at anytime barring Adventure 1 to maybe Shadow the Hedgehog which all kinda tie together. The talk of the ancients in this seem to call back to the older lore but for new fans they don't really have a reason to care.

    Interesting perspective there.
To me, I think that, even if the game is what you said, it's the kind of game Sonic needs more than ever to not be reliant on constant classic series nostalgia. To a Sonic fan, this game REALLY hits all the right notes Forces constantly missed that even Bubsy hits properly (and yes, I'd sooner play The Woolies Strike Back over Forces since TWSB doesn't set my expectations and throw them down the drain, and considering Forces seemed like a big game, a 6/10 Sonic game is always inferior to a 5/10, or even a 4/10, Bubsy game). And for certain, Sonic Frontiers serviced the fans better than Crash 4 or modern Paper Mario did.
If I can suggest a game that's Frontiers done right, play Kirby and the Forgotten Land. As far as I had experienced, the game is VERY fun and relaxing to play while feeling polished.

Origami King and especially Crash 4 (the new one, not Wrath of Cortex) have been much better received in their respective fandoms.
And I also completely disagree comparing Frontiers to Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Forgotten Land was Kirby's full transition to 3D platforming that attempted to answer the question "how do we transition a character like Kirby to 3D?". It wasnt trying to reinvent anything. It was just expanding what Kirby can do, without feeling like a rough draft. It's a Kirby game through and through.
