  • It was on August 31st 2023 when I what's going on my lunch break at work and hopped on Twitter, only to see that volition was trending, I feared I knew the reason why, and indeed I was proven correct in my prediction, as it was announced effective immediately volition inc, the creators of such things as dissent, Saints row, and Red faction would be shutting down. join me today as an outsider looking in at what killed volition. Many will tell you that volition software's downfall was as a direct result of the failure of the Saints row reboot, and there is a lot of Truth to that. But to me, The story goes much deeper than that. Saints row was merely the final, and the largest nail in the coffin which seal to their fate. But the signs had been there for quite a while.

I actually...disagree about the problem being that the original Third Street Saints were necessarily played out. The problem, and this is why I would have told them a reboot was dumb, was that "You guys have done all you can with the 'let's mock Grand Theft Auto' bit. The ending of 4 is the perfect set-up to transition into targeting Sassy Credo."

always good to remember games are made by people, not companies. while that recent saints row game had the name “volition” on the box, it wasn’t the team of people that made the original games you enjoyed. they can legally use the name of the series & legally use the name of the developer, but that ultimately means nothing.

Embracer Group may have doomed the video game industry. They were buying as many studios as possible to look attractive to Saudi investors. When that deal fell through, they were in massive debt and had to cull as much of their new assets as they could. This may cause a ripple effect where other investors get cold feet and pull ojt of other deals, causing the cycle to repeat.

I remember reading that somewhere in the middle east, a company invested a ton of cash into Embracer Group (which is the parent company of as it was known, Deep Silver).
A large sum was planned to be invested, but soon enough they realised that wasn't profiteable at a long run or wasn't worth at all due to probably their reputation, so they end up cancelling the offer a year later or so.
This was around before and after the reboot of Saints Row was released. That might explain ithis game whole existence, to appeal investors but it didn't pay off.
Later, Embracer Group went into that re-structuration process looking how rough things were inside the company. Studios were shut down, people were moved here and there, etc.
If Embracer Group didn't took that investment, they would have probably still be in business and continuing milking the franchise alongside other Volition IPs.

I pretty much agree with everything you said. I have to wonder how much of the original staff was still around when the Saints Row reboot was being made ? People tend to forget that while the name of the developer might be the same that it is not the same company when a majority of the people have already left. The writing was on the walls.
12:26 I say the same thing with Cyberpunk 2077, at least how it was at launch. There was more depth and the world felt more alive in the older GTA titles than it did in Night City.
And also I think EA is (currently) overhated. Don't get me wrong they did a lot to deserve the hate but currently everyone just parrots "EA Bad" without actually thinking about it. Think back, what is the last actual thing the company did that caused outrage ? It is probably the release state of 2042 (which I think some of it actually belongs to Dice) but besides that for a while now EA has been putting out decent to good games devoid of microtransactions. I think they learned a lot with the Battlefront debacle and their scumminess seems to be focused on their sports titles. They aren't perfect, nobody is, but compared to Activision currently EA are damn saints. Are they trying to be better ? Who knows I just think if a company isn't being as scummy it should be acknowledged.

Personally i thought SR4 stood well on it's own, despite using the same map, they made up for it by adding a lot of fun mechanics plus keeping the story at least up to par with 3's as well as the great dialogue the games were known for. Gat Outta Hell is where i think they fell off, the flying felt boring, especially without the in game soundtracks you got from the previous games, Gat and Kinzie hardly speak to anyone and there were no standout moments in it that i can think of, whereas i can think of at least a couple from 2-4.

    4. You said that Volition have denied that AOM was connected to the Gat out of Hell ending.
Then why did the SaintsRow twitter account make this tweet:
"It is definitely related. Agents of Mayhem is a spinoff that follows the ending from Gat out of Hell where God reboots the universe."

I first got into Saints Row via 3, so I cant really make any calls on the prior two, but I fell in love with it. I was never able to get into GTA Games, but the Over The Top style of 3 was great. I enjoyed the Super Hero take of 4 and even Gat. I even got Agents later, and while I like the Idea of the Game it just felt like it was lacking Features. So when the Reboot was announced I was Hyped, but then I saw our "Saints", and the Social Media. Lets just say I quickly lost any desire to get it. It was clear the people now working on it did not understand what made Saints 3 work. It is sad, but I can still play the Good Ones.

It's insane to me just how bland and bad the Saints Row reboot ended up becoming. Like, it would have been SO easy to make a good game that rebooted the series. Keeping some good elements from all 5 Saints Row games and mashing them together to make what could have been the arguably best Saints Row ever.

Step one of the "Four steps for ideological subversion". (Yuri Bezmenov, 1985)
Demoralization - this is a process which can take about 15-30 years to perform (a generation). *During this stage, the moral fibre and integrity of the country is put into question, thereby creating doubt in the minds of the people. To do so, manipulation of the media and academia is required to influence young people. As the younger generation embraces new values, such as Marxism and Leninism, the older generation slowly loses control simply through attrition.* Again, true facts no longer matter during this stage, but rather creating perceptions are of paramount importance.
      Communism and Religion
Abolished - all religious and metaphysics is rejected. Engels and Lenin agreed that religion was a drug or “spiritual booze” and must be combated. *To them, atheism put into practice meant a “forcible overthrow of all existing social conditions.”*
Eliminating American exceptionalism, fundamental change of national identity, structural deconstruction of foundational principles, elimination of religion. *Embedding a new societal design upon the psyche of generations through ideological academia, peer pressure by elites upon academics and society to convince that prior values were inherently flawed, racist, prejudiced etc. National identity is diluted with aspersions toward historical references. National History is re-written, re-defined, and molded to fit the new intended behavioral model and create the new values.*
---Art, including established IP, are cultural and social history. As such, they destroy the old and try adapting it to fit their Marxist ideologies.
In what is perhaps a most striking passage in the interview, here’s how Bezmenov described the state of a “demoralized” person:
“As I mentioned before, exposure to true information does not matter anymore,” said Bezmenov. “A person who was demoralized is unable to assess true information. The facts tell nothing to him. Even if I shower him with information, with authentic proof, with documents, with pictures; even if I take him by force to the Soviet Union and show him [a] concentration camp, he will refuse to believe it, until he [receives] a kick in his fan-bottom. When a military boot crashes his balls then he will understand. But not before that. That’s the [tragedy] of the situation of demoralization.”
It’s hard not to see in that the state of many modern Americans. *We have become a society of polarized tribes, with some people flat out rejecting facts in favor of narratives and opinions.*
*“[T]he useful idiots, the leftists who are idealistically believing in the beauty of the Soviet socialist or Communist or whatever system,* when they get disillusioned, they become the worst enemies. That’s why my KGB instructors specifically made the point: never bother with leftists. Forget about these political prostitutes. Aim higher. [...] They serve a purpose only at the stage of destabilization of a nation. *For example, your leftists in the United States: all these professors and all these beautiful civil rights defenders. They are instrumental in the process of the subversion only to destabilize a nation. When their job is completed, they are not needed any more.* They know too much. Some of them, when they get disillusioned, when they see that Marxist-Leninists come to power-obviously they get offended-they think that they will come to power. That will never happen, of course. *They will be lined up against the wall and shot.”*
Reverse psychology is a technique involving the assertion of a belief or behavior that is opposite to the one desired, with the expectation that this approach will encourage the subject of the persuasion to do what is actually desired.
As we can see, except for a small, vocal minority on X and other social media, "woke" does not go over very well even though it is being heavily promoted through various means of propaganda.
Since Marxism is not truly the goal, what do you suppose the desired result really is?
So the pendulum swings, now violently, now slowly; and every institution not only carries within it the seeds of its own dissolution, but prepares the way for its most hated rival.
      William Ralph Inge
"Democracy and the Future" The Atlantic Monthly (March 1922)
On the "left" we have the current atheistic Liberal Marxist institution. What would the "right" side equal and opposite reaction, the most hated rival of the left, be?
Hint: Look up Dominion Theology/Seven Mountains Mandate

I pre-ordered Agents of Mayhem, assuming it would be in the vein of Saints Row, and to get in on the Johnny Gat bonus. It was a gigantic letdown, especially at full price. The current year political jabs in NPC dialogue were also a huge misstep because anyone with sensibility would know that such lines would age like milk.
I had hope for Saints Row 2022... until their social media manager started fighting with fans who didn't like the direction they were going. Making the gang into a bunch of hipsters who want to pay off their student loans? Changing Freckle Bitch's probably because muh sexism, and changing Rim Jobs into Jim Robs because muh capitalism bad? I don't know who was I'm charge of these ideas but I don't want them anywhere near any creative industry, gaming or otherwise. And when it came to the character creator, I actually liked it quite a bit. The clothing left a lot of be desired but I'm not sure if that was just the standalone creator or if the game had much more clothing options.
I didn't buy the game. I didn't even download it when it was part of PS+. They had burned me that badly.
If only they listened to the people on Twitter telling them "we don't like this direction," because those were people who still cared.

I still can't believe Agents of Mayhem was a singleplayer only game. It's like a decision made by an AI. "People like singleplayer games, people also like co-op hero shooter games...so let's make a singleplayer game that caters to co-op fans". It boggles the mind. Everything about it screams co-op fun but boring singleplayer experience.
If it was a case of low budget, you'd think they would release it singleplayer and eventually patch in multiplayer but nope, THAT was their vision.

Ironically, I think GTA killed Saint's Row, albeit indirectly. Saint's Row 1 was a good game, but unremarkable. Then in April 2008, GTA4 comes out and it's great but pretty realistic and serious in mechanics and tone. When SR2 comes out in October it's still somewhat derivative and niche, but it's such a breath of fresh air because while it has a dark and serious story, it has jokes too, and is more than happy to just let the player have fun. "It's like a wackier GTA." And that sentiment killed it. Because if that's what people liked, then SR3 has to be even wackier! And Goofier! And less serious! And sure it was a fun game, but it wasn't really a good game, not like 2 was at least... and then GTA5 comes out a few years later and is way more in line with what SR2 was doing which made it impossible for Volition to go back to that style, even if they wanted to, without going back to being "another GTA clone" so they went even farther, and after SR4 did anyone that played 1 and 2 even give a shit anymore? And I still haven't played any Red Faction :p

    1. Reusing the same map is good. More devs should do it in order to get more value out of an engine and map.
The reason I loved Saints Row 2 so much is because it reused the same map from Saints Row.
The reason I disliked Saints Row 3 so much is because they abandoned the city they had spent 2 games making iconic.

Loved Summoner, Red Faction and The Punisher on the PS2.
Summoner had terrible pop up but made up for it with a great dark story, interesting characters, side quests and a great twist about halfway through that turned the whole game on its head. Never really took to any of the characters in Summoner 2 although it had some great ideas in it.
Red Faction was a great little shooter but the environmental damage was kind of a gimmick at times as you could not destroy everything.
The Punisher was an absolute blast with great shooting, varied levels and challenge modes that were really tough in places. The boss fights were not the best though. It is also the main reason Thomas Jane is still my favourite Punisher. The dialogue in this game was hilarious at times.

Agents of Mayhem felt like it was made with love, its fatal issues were its buggy release and the complete confusion over what the game was supposed to be. Playing the game, Mayhem is clearly supposed to be a heroic GI Joe saving the innocent citizens from the evil Cobra, but the game still has small stuff like gadgets that were obviously designed to Saints Row "mess with the innocents" sensibilities. The PR certainly didn't help, pushing claims that AoM was its own thing completely separate from Saints Row while simultaneously pushing connections to Saints Row. Then there was the misstep with the difficulty; the game was built around switching between the three members of your team based on the situations you encountered, but the default difficulty was so low that there was no need to ever switch characters. (Worse, the super low difficulty made several characters flat out worse than the others, as it effectively rendered their specialties meaningless.)

I just want to add that according to said ex devs, Volition were in the same position as Bungie is right now. The devs weren't lazy or out of touch, they knew what's the problem, and did want to give the fans what they asked for, they (allegedly) even wanted planned to keep the original cast, Dex included, for a more appropriate and respectful reboot, but Deep Silver just wouldn't let them. You've pointed out their Twitter manager. That wasn't Volition. That's who they had breathing down their necks. Considering what they've put the Dead Island 2 teams through, I think it's safe to say there's some truth to all that.
