I drove a cab in the 80s to put myself through college. Out for 12-26 hours. Insane the things I saw. Changed me. Made me quit drinking, become a writer.
In November 2023, I finished my second semester of university. However, I had to take a cumulative final exam that was worth 100% of my final grade. While I was studying, I was listening to this video. Although I hadn’t seen Taxi Driver yet, the video caught my attention visually, so I decided that after taking the exam, I would watch the movie that night. The day of the exam arrived, and after a lot of studying, I was able to complete it without any problems. That night, as soon as I started the movie and heard the music in the intro, I felt really happy because it reminded me of the video. Almost a year has passed since that moment, and every time I hear that music, it takes me back to that day when I took what, up to now, has been the hardest exam I've ever studied for. And afterward, I got to watch an amazing movie.
Reminds me of my childhood as I fell asleep in the backseat while my father drove us home from my uncle’s house late at night after a long day of playing with my cousins.

Travis Bickle in 2023: "You know, it's somethin' else, lookin' out at this city now. Back in the day, in the gritty streets of the '70s, this place had a pulse, a rhythm. You could feel the tension in the air, like a coiled spring just waitin' to snap. I used to cruise these same streets, my taxi's wheels rollin' over the asphalt, takin' me to places where the neon lights flickered like promises. People, they had this edge to 'em, a rawness that told you they were fightin' to survive. It was a city of contradictions, beauty and decay intertwined in a dance that played out every night. Now, though, it's like a different world. The pulse, it's faded. The neon's still there, but it ain't got that same fire. Everyone's starin' at screens, lost in their own little digital worlds. The streets are cleaner, but they've lost their soul. People don't talk no more, they just text and swipe, too afraid to look each other in the eye. The city's lost its character, its authenticity. It's become sanitized, homogenized. The filth and the grime, it's been replaced by sterile buildings and gentrified neighborhoods. It's like they've taken a scrub brush to the soul of this place, tryin' to polish it up, make it presentable for the suits and the tourists. But you know, deep down, I can't help but think maybe I'm just seein' it through my own messed-up lens. Maybe the city's always been changin', evolvin'. Maybe this is just the way of things. Hell, maybe I'm the one who's stuck in the past, clingin' to a version of reality that was never gonna last. But one thing's for sure, in this sea of change, one thing remains the same - the loneliness. That ain't never gonna change. No matter how many fancy gadgets they come up with, no matter how many shiny buildings they erect, people are still gonna be searchin' for a connection, for somethin' real. As for me, I'll keep drivin' these streets, watchin' as the world keeps spinnin' and changin'. Maybe one day, I'll find my own place in this new reality, a way to connect, to make some sense of it all. Until then, I'll just keep rollin', a lone sentinel in the night, tryin' to find my own path in this ever-shifting landscape.

I saw her. Having a good time. Her hair flowing like angry lava from a volcano. My heart knew it could not go on. I can see the cold come knocking and letting itself in through the torn paper covered shatterd windows of my tired soul. Rest. Rest is an illusion for the happy man who doesn't need it. You can't find rest while holding the bottle, pleading for it to come and find you.
The winds from the Hudson blew like smoke through my apartment window as I thought about a night sky dark and ominous. There was a fever in the night so hot it hurt my eyelashes or maybe it was the heat of the camel tip hanging from my lip. I took another drag and tossed it into the flooded ashtray that told the tale of hours just watching and waiting for a knock on the door. The double bourbon made it easier to wait, but the wanting never ceased the hunger for action. The door clicked and my eyes flicked up. She swung the door open and all I could see were legs that stretched from here to Long Island. Her red lips parted slightly, but she didn't say a word just stood there in the hot silence. The action was in her eyes and the fever was in my blood. The winds blew again and the street sounds broke the silence. That's when I saw the gun in her hand...

Denver was my home when I drove for Yellow Cab and Metro Taxi sporadically during the 80s and 90s. So many stories, so much life, at times raw, other times, grace-filled. Though I preferred the late nights and early mornings, the heartbeat of the city never stopped. For me, as a single man, it was a decent living. The long hours could easily be broken by as much freedom as I required to live my life on purpose.
I just got off work. Exhausted to the point that I can't even climb out the cab and walk to my door. I ask the cab driver if I can sleep here in the back seat for about an hour. He's nods and says " yeah, okay Kid. I'll even turn off the meter. Take as much time as you need." Clicks on his radio to a soft jazz radio station. The cab cruises the darkened city. My eyelids get heavier. I'm out.
This was my grandfather during the 70s as well. He was a cabby who worked 3rd shift in columbus, ohio...i remember him always saying..those were simpler, more laid back times.. may he rest in peace.
As a door dash driver who has spent many late night hours in some very unfavorable and very old parts of town, this video and the music both are extremely, extremely relatable. After a while it starts to feel like an endless loop of the same thing over and over again. I know the city and the streets so well that i just zone out half the time, rarely looking at directions for a second or third look. It can be peaceful, but it can also be grueling, terrifying, and the only people that see more messed up things than a delivery or taxi driver is a police officer, first responder, or soldier.
Wow, that’s a powerful perspective. It sounds like you’ve had some intense experiences on the job. It’s interesting how familiar routines can become almost meditative, but also expose you to some tough realities. I can imagine the mix of peace and challenge you must face. Thanks for sharing your insight-it's a reminder of the resilience and dedication of people in roles like yours!

What a great movie. It really is just for a 1 person audience. It really captivates the individualist perspective for those moments in life where you cant find purpose or meaning. The movie tells you, if you're stuck here, you need to do something drastic. Not bad, just radical.
Just returned from a trip to New York City two weeks ago. It is a beautiful city where the old and the new coexist. That's how I felt as a tourist from Asia.

Ah, so many people yet so little friends. It hurts so painfully doesn’t it? Like a never ending abyss that sucks you down the drain as you grasp on to the water that drips through your fingers. When I made my green light record (36 greens in row -Westport to Downtown Hyatt)
Floyd was playing and on my 1st red "Welcome to the Machine" started. it was magical..
ur watching this on your computer or your cellphone though
That's when I saw the gun in her hand...
exactly!
You must be a writer, or you missed your calling. I usually skip paragraphs but that was the best to represent 2024.
Thank you
I'm at the 23:00 minute mark reading this and it just fits so perfectly, the imagery is intense! Cheers pal!
love it !

The jazz, the feeling, the nostalgia, the good relaxing and tranquil vibes, the scenes from Taxi Driver, THE AMAZING TRACKING WORK!
Man this is the life got these jazz tunes on laying down with a joint n coffee thinking bout how I wished Id had been born in them days. Peace from Midlands UK 👊
really nice to listen to while faded
jazz is a man's expression of emotion
Why just a men? Women too
@@Мич-с not women, but men
Denver was my home when I drove for Yellow Cab and Metro Taxi sporadically during the 80s and 90s. So many stories, so much life, at times raw, other times, grace-filled. Though I preferred the late nights and early mornings, the heartbeat of the city never stopped. For me, as a single man, it was a decent living. The long hours could easily be broken by as much freedom as I required to live my life on purpose.
I avoid playlists like the plague but this guy has got it going on. Funny looking fella though.
This collection is so alluring, sad and just plain gorgeous. I love this so much...
Yes but I would chose Sade everytime ❤
Loneliness has followed me everywhere... (Travis sometime during the movie)
its a long hustle but it keeps me busy
So it's a quote
Im sitting alone in my department, no sounds outside, drinking mate, this song makes me think that life can be beautyful sometimes.
I'm out.
ts is fire.
This was my grandfather during the 70s as well. He was a cabby who worked 3rd shift in columbus, ohio...i remember him always saying..those were simpler, more laid back times.. may he rest in peace.
road to the west is such a vibe
just saw this comment right after i heard that track, and its def the best song
Cowboy Bebop is an AMAZING anime and the Seatbelts are a great band
@@stormoo17 fortunately I never had anything too crazy happen but I live in Jackson, MS. Which has an extremely high rate of murder per capita. Getting out of a car at night in the worst part of town, while an active police investigation is going on, to set food on a porch for $7 has you reevaluating your life decisions sometimes 🤣
Very well done. Sensuous music...and 1976...my favorite year!
Late night/early morning drive in the rain be hitting different with this playing in the background.
Makes me feel like the protagonist of my own life
You are! 😂
This is just fantastic. Thank you for making this. And posting it.
okay goody two shoes
This is one of my favorite videos on RUclips. Thank you.
As a kid that grew up in Manhattan in the 70's/80's, it's just as trashy, grimy and disgusting as I remember! NYC has come a long way.
Calmness, stillness, as nourishing as a hot meal on a cold day. If I could stay in this space for the rest of my life I would. All it's missing is a whisper, and then sound of a lit cigarette burning between breaths. :p
Please more of that man. That’s just awesome as background in the office 😎
Hands down the absolute best background video to go with the music. No one has done it better.
Incredibly, I felt relaxed and like all my problems washed away. Wow.
These "cool" jazz mixes you're creating are absolutely perfect. This one and the Chet Baker mix are particularly awesome, I think Chet Baker would absolutely love this if he was still around. Thanks so much!
bee is perfect
What a great movie. It really is just for a 1 person audience. It really captivates the individualist perspective for those moments in life where you cant find purpose or meaning. The movie tells you, if you're stuck here, you need to do something drastic. Not bad, just radical.
A beautiful atmosphere. I hear this while coding in my computer. The songs help me to focus so much!
Just returned from a trip to New York City two weeks ago. It is a beautiful city where the old and the new coexist. That's how I felt as a tourist from Asia.
I'd love it more if it were just the POV shots without the cartoon head.
But this is still such a great concept that I'm glad randomly popped up in my feed.
He's there to remind you to smile.
Even Doomers need to crack a smile.
Bohren & Der Club of Gore are the masters of the Doomjazz genre.
This is a good jam. The video is cool too. Every once in a while, I look up from my work and catch myself watching it intensely. Thanks for sharing.
LOVE the brief images from the movie... thank you !!! "They... cannot... touch... her..."
I'm a cabbie. ❤. Yes, it sometimes gets like this. Lol. I play Blade Runner Blues when it gets like this.
This music hits differently on a rainy night, something so peaceful and comforting watching the rain slam down to this 🌧🌛
nice to find some legit jazz as aomeone whose not familiar with the artists in the genre.
breaking through the wall of all the lofi and low effort no copyright youtube filler songs is hard

This and a cigar watching the sunset is an absolutely incredible feeling
Even reading the script and quotes are enough to make you realize how brilliant Taxi Driver is. And when you add the actors themselves, De Niro, Foster, Shepherd... Everything that could be said about it has been said and yet there's more, the more different people watch it. Everyone has something to add, to comment.
Back when I was driving for Yellow Cab in the 90s. Rough gig, but had some good times.
The playlist we didn’t know we needed, but so desperately do
Had me nice & relaxed, almost asleep, then the advert popped up and I was full awake again. Fail, see ya
Such good for sitting in my car and chilling...
Prowler, always an excellent dark jazz tune for driving at night.
This animation is gold
Cold rainy night , drunk af , got this playing while i sit and contemplate life , perfect.
A dark night in a city that knows how to keep its secrets.
I absolutely adore this. Please never remove.
Awright ! That was satisfying. Nothing beats a Checker.
Saw Prowler from Bohren & der Club of Gore, knew instantly it would be a quality playlist!
I lovvveee this ❤ thank you so much for sharing! I needed this.
love how the playlist starts with the driver taking off
Ah, so many people yet so little friends. It hurts so painfully doesn’t it? Like a never ending abyss that sucks you down the drain as you grasp on to the water that drips through your fingers. The water being your happiness and the abyss being life’s big smack in the face. I know that feeling more than anyone else sadly. It never leaves

Doomer Jazz... I found a new genre today. Thank you.
there is no such genre, it's just a stupid cringe name for noir jazz.
Joint, super hot bath, this and dark days by James Baldwin.. dayum
Broooo the fact that you added these into the Spotify playlist on 4/20 😂. Love the mix mayn
Spotify Schmotify
I absolutely love the soundtrack in this video! The music is perfectly in tune with the visuals, creating a captivating atmosphere that pulls you in right from the start. The selection of tracks is superb, each one adding a unique layer of emotion and intensity to the scenes. It’s clear that a lot of thought and creativity went into choosing these tracks, making the video truly unforgettable.
This is relaxing while I am working the nightshift⌚
This masterpiece speaks to me. Thank you to the uploader!.
I am happy you enjoyed it!
@@TORQ-1 I thoroughly enjoy it over and over
it started out great but this the GOAT cuz SEATBELTS is on this
As a late night taxi driver, i approve of this playlist.
Finally. This stopped my sweaty palms. Thanks.
Very Nice, i might just have to watch this when I get home. It's been a while. Classic
Going to see Bohren & Der Club of Gore tomorrow night. Can't wait.
Espectacular... Me toco el alma... Ahora lo necesito todos los días
I love Foggy Night and thought it was pretty much unknown, so it makes me really happy to see it here. It deserves to be heard, its the dreamiest track there is
You make me realize how Road to the West fit perfectly with the doomer jazz atmoshere, thanks !
