“It’s from ‘98. It’s not that old.”
I could stand to hear that sentence more these days.
😂 amen brother...it's hard to believe this song is almost exactly 25 years old (3/10/98)
Lol. I'm 66, and when I hear someone in their 70's passed away I say "OMG, he wasn't even that old".
I know how you feel. I still consider anything after 1979 as new 🤣
@You're Busted That is so funny. I have a 1979 Trans Am that I bought in 1979 and I still treat it like a new car.
@@yourebusted5786 Several lingering bands from the 60’s and 70’s kept on, but you’re right, 1980 brought in a new feel with many bands that made it big but will never compare to most of my favorites from the 60’s and 70’s!
When you’re on deployment overseas, a lot of times you’ll randomly sing songs, quote movies, or bring up pop culture references when you’re on patrol. One day, my best friend and I were in the truck in a little village called Ameria near Baghdad and it was over 120 degrees that day and our Lt had misread the map and our convoy got a little lost while we were waiting for coms. He knew the story behind this song (I didn’t), and he just started belting out the chorus as we were driving around lost looking for the area where we were supposed be going to for patrol. At that point, it became the theme song for our deployment in our truck. We all learned the words and would sing it multiple times a day. He passed away (unrelated car accident) about 7 years later. Every time I hear this song I think of that day, him, and have oddly fond memories of rough times. Hard to explain…but I love the song.
Thanks for sharing that memory 💖🦋
THIS is why I scroll down to read the comments. Great, poignant story 👍
Wow.
Thank you for your service. I'm sorry to hear about your lieutenant, but I'm glad that you have fond memories of him when you hear this song.
Singing “they won’t make it home, but they really don’t care” in a happy tone while serving overseas. Jesus. That certainly hits different.
This was actually based on a true story. Well, a positive reimagining of a true store. An elderly couple disappeared and their grown kids couldn't find them. A while later they were found to have crashed their van or car and both were unfortunately deceased. Here, we get a happier ending. Or, you can interpret the lyrics as the couple entering heaven/paradise. Never getting older, road paved in gold...nothing but joy:)
Yes! I believe it was an elderly couple from Dallas, Texas. Fastball who is from Austin 😁 saw about it in the news and decided to make a song imagining what this couple was thinking and wishing them the best I guess lol.
@@jacobninedorf4121 Yeah! That sounds about right!
Man, this song brings me back to my childhood. I miss the '90s. lol
@@jacobninedorf4121 Salado Texas...about 30 minutes north of Austin and 10 miles south of me.
@@jpeopolis the more time goes on, the more I'm convinced the 90s was peak civilization
@@jacobninedorf4121 Yes. The song was written and recorded before the car was found. The kids have said they love the song. There's a documentary about it on You Tube.
The nineties were said to be a resurgence of the 70's, Fastball chose a beat from the 60's And a Tango backbeat for they're song. Was a huge hit
This song is made to sound like an old monaural transistor radio to begin with, with the radio sweeping frequencies and stations, until this song begins, then as the song progresses, the sound resolves into more "normal" stereo. Pink Floyd used a similar technique in Wish You Were Here in 1975, to move a story from the past to the present. As others have said, this song was written after singer, Tony Scalzo, read of an elderly couple just driving off, getting lost, and perishing.
The whole album is great. All the songs are weird and catchy. Such an underrated band.
I'll never figure out why they didn't have more hits. I love this band. They put out their 8th album last year.
They have a great song called Fire Escape. Now that's a banger! I love this song and I love this group. I saw them at a rock festival about 20 years ago and they were great. I really can't recommend Fire Escape enough. This is a nice addition to my Saturday. Thanks guys!
Fire Escape does not get enough love. Ita great! Not to mention "outta my head". They had 3 hits! The other two just weren't as big as this.
Stylistically, I believe this is a tango, which gives it a different vibe to the usual rock stuff you hear.
I thought the "solo" dance with couple was tango too.
Sounds like it has a 50’s Scooby Doo music
Such a fascinating song!
Such a great 60s vibe to a lot of 90s songs, including this one. I got this CD when it first came out, and then when this song became a hit my stepdaughter told me about it. I got the CD and said, "You mean this one?" She was flabbergasted.
I loved that whole album. It all has kind of the same vibe as this song. Totally underrated.
I remember when this song came out and I’ve loved it since.
I'd love to see you guys do a run at the 90s swing revival bands... Brian Setzer Orchestra, Squirrel Nut Zipper, Big Bad Voodoo Daddies, Cherry Poppin Daddies... Good ideosyncratic moment in music
They must have listened. They covered Stray Cat Strut recently!
Yes! Many great retro sounds in that era. Neo-Swing, 3rd wave Ska, Neo Soul; cocktail-space age-bachelor music, Sublime, Neo rockabilly and psychobilly. The Cramps and Reverend Horton Heat. What a great era of music. That's when it all went downhill thereafter.
Every decade had its one hit wonder. The word to describe the catchy part of a song is called “the hook”.
This song had many hooks in it.
The 90s was the last time there were local DJs with the ability to break a band. I lived in Orlando at the time and a DJ on WJRR launched a local band called Seven Mary Three to national exposure (their whole first album was great start to finish, but you can pretty much stop there). Now most radio is centralized out of NYC or LA or whatever. Also, with respect to CGI, this was only a year before The Matrix (and 7 years after Terminator 2), so CGI definitely existed. But it was a lot more expensive.
One-hit wonders existed going all the way back to the 1950s when they first started tracking recorded music sales. The 90s weren't unusual in having more or less of them.
I could see Paul McCartney writing something like this circa late 64/early 65. Has that vibe for sure (meant as a compliment)
This song was played so much when it came out lol. It's very Elvis Costello.
There were plenty of one-hit-wonders before and after the 90s, and plenty of 2-4 hit wonders who had one strong album then faded or broke up. While a lot of 80s 1HW got play on MTV, in the 90s they had a much more developed mechanism for buildings hype around the latest hits, like Total Request Live and Headbanger’s Ball.
There were a lot of one *album* wonders in the '90s (Spin Doctors, Marcy Playground, Lauryn Hill, Presidents of the United States of America, etc)
Agreed. A lot of "One hit" wonders were/are actually 2-3 hit wonders, or semi-hits lol. It could be multiple hits on ONE album or a few hits/semi-hits spread from one album to the next, or different decades (Cusp). Noticed a lot of bands back then would have a hit in the late '80s and have another one in the early '90s or have a hit in the late '90s and another hit in the early '00s.
And still happens today with modern bands.
This song should have won the Grammy for Song of the Year in '98. One of the greatest American driving songs ever, windows down, volume up.
They had another hit in 2000 called "Out of my Head". So they are not 1 hit wonders. And their music style is alternative rock.
Okay, I remember that one now. So not necessarily a one hit wonder band. Any more?
A 90s song I like a lot. Beatlesque feel to it
Brad & Lex, their other hit was "Out of My Head" !
And Fire Escape
You're an Ocean too.
I love that song!
!!!!!!I love that song!
I’m not a very good musician, so it’s hard to explain but it seems like it’s played in a minor chord and it is freaking awesome!
And "You're an Ocean"
This is a great song. They had a couple others too.
This song always brings me back to my time stationed in Alaska while enlisted in the Air Force, specifically one coworker who LOVED this song. The song's meaning didn't really hit me back then. It's a happy sort of song, while still sad given the events that inspired it. I guess growing older will make you think about/feel things differently.
There were clubs with a scene in the 90's. Now, only bands on the same management will fill certain festivals where as back then the cross marketing of rap and rock and alternative was welcomed, it benefited all bands involved. Now bands HAVE to do what they are told by the higher ups or will never get a shot.
Catchy "happy" song about a tragic event. The Chorus is talking about them (the elderly couple) after death, wandering the highway (of gold) never getting older, always summer, etc.:
"You can see their shadows wandering off somewhere
They won't make it home, but they really don't care
They wanted the highway
They're happier there today, today"
The shadows are their ghosts. Creepy eh?
These guys are so underrated.
Thus is one of my guilty pleasure songs. ❤
I'm in my 60s, so I'm not really too much of a nineties guy. However; I've always thought this was a really cool song👍
Just a solid little jangle pop tune. Love it.
The mastering of the song is intentional that's the sound they were looking for. No idea what it means but it was one of my favs back in the day
Musically, this song is based on the melody of a mid-century Latin hit called "Besa me mucho" (Kiss me a lot). This explains the Mid-Century Moderne look of the sets, backdrops and props on set, in the video.
I know the story behind this song. This is why it reminds me so much of my grandparent because they passed away the same way as the couple in this song.
Thanks for doing this one! In 99 I was a bartender at this 24hr bar on the beach & I would always play this song on the jukebox while I worked. Years later I couldn't find it again because I couldn't remember the name so thanks!
I think I may have to work up an acoustic cover of this - I never realized how beautifully dark these lyrics are!
A fun 90's rock band making smart & quirky music ... more Fastball please! I suggest you check out "Out Of My Head" by them next.
I liked what I called retro style by them and a couple other groups
Great song, left to so much interpretation
What up do.... love your guys reactions and both of youallls unique but very enjoyable differences of listening to new music , you all simply rock, 🎶✌️from Detroit
This song has more hooks than a pirate convention.
I heard the song tons when it came out but have never seen the video before. I always thought this was The Wallflowers. Tony Scalzo sure sounds a lot like Jakob Dylan.
The story by hind the song is interesting. Frontman Tony Scalzo got the idea from a newspaper article. It was about an elderly couple that drove off in their car on vacation. Never to return. She was in early stage Alzheimer's and he was in recovery from brain surgery. They were later found dead hundreds of miles off course at the bottom of a raven. With the wife in the driver's seat.
weird i heard they were at a retirement home in austin went for a walk got lost in the woods and died from exposure
Can I just say what a relief it is to hear “it’s from 98, it’s not that old?” 😂 Makes me feel like less of a crypt keeper after all the Gen Z “Chandelier by Sia gives me nostalgia for my youth” comments
Fastball was being pushed as the next big thing. I read a review of their CD which stated their sound was"Beatlesque", and the drummer even has the black oyster pearl drum kit like Ringo in the 60's. But as often happens when groups are compared to The Beatles,(Bay City Rollers) they turned out to be a one hit wonder. They did have a great sound, but they couldn't come up with a follow up song.
i hope someday to walk that road paved in gold to a happier existence than the one i've had here.
One of the greatest songs of the 90s
"Was there more or less opportunity?" Yes lol. Before the 1996 Telecommunications Act was passed, that allowed corporations to buy hundreds of radio stations, there were far more indie stations that could pick and play whatever the DJs liked. Now, the average radio station only has 300 songs in their library (insane and stupid), and playlists come from corporate. BUT around the same time, the internet (file sharing, streaming, etc) made it far easier for an artist to get their start. The Arctic Monkeys, Billie Eilish, and Justin Bieber are just a couple examples of artists who got their break via social media.
Thank God for college radio stations. More freedom like the older days.
The DJs still plays whatever they want and more variety.
@joe smith Couldn't agree more! I was a college DJ (WSYC, Shippensburg University). After graduating, I went back occasionally to do some shows. I loved it when someone would call in and ask about a new or obscure song I played.
@@roncarnes5724 Cool! So lucky of you. I know what you mean. I grew up in Austin, Texas awhile back ( big college town). Big alt/indie scene in that city, BTW. Multiple alternative and college radio stations there. A buddy of mine was a DJ too at one of the stations, still does it here and there.. KVRX and KUTX (Univ of Texas) One day he'll be on for underground hip hop night, next day would be new wave/post-punk night, next night would be modern and older alt/indie rock night, etc. Different segments throughout the days. Lots of exposure to different things.
This song is based on the true story of Lela and Raymond Howard, an elderly couple from Salado, Texas who drove to the annual Pioneer Day festival 10 miles away in Temple and didn't return. She had Alzheimer's disease and he was recovering from brain surgery.
When they disappeared, a reporter from the Austin American-Statesman wrote a series of articles about the missing couple. Fastball bassist Tony Scalzo came up with the idea for the song after reading the articles (the band is from Austin). "It's a romanticized take on what happened," he said. Scalzo pictured them "taking off to have fun, like they did when they first met."
Thirteen days after the Howards went missing, they were found in Hot Springs, Arkansas, about 400 miles from their destination; they were still in the vehicle (an Oldsmobile Delta 88), which had veered off the side of the road and was hidden in brush. Scalzo had finished writing the song when he learned that the couple had died.
As someone who lives in temple
I confirm this story
I don’t consider them a “one hit wonder” because of their song “sooner or later” from the Disney Original movie Brink. 😆 give it a listen and you’ll feel the nostalgia. Especially if you watched Brink growing up
A lot of music in the 90s mixed the vocals more like an instrument making it at same level instead of on top of the instruments and guitars were louder in mixes
Great song! About the audio, often times the "official" video versions on RUclips don't have the sonic quality of the album versions.
The elderly couple that left were suffering from illnesses. It was reported that the husband may have had dementia. It’s speculated that they just wanted to live free and in the moment so they just decided to go on an adventure
This song was so different than anything else at the time it came out, it helped me learn that i was into a few different genres i wasn't aware of!
One thing I can say about music you can make even a sad story sound good and this is a badass song
great song for driving saludos from Argentina world champion
This album is all good.
You guys have literally reacted to every song i search for. Love the channel
I LOVE THIS SONG!
Love this song
I think the audio is a bit pinched in this video. You should also hear "Outta my head"
Finally!!! This is a great song with a great better back story.
Man this brings back memories and they actually performed this song at my college when we opened our student center I was so hype and shout out to SFA
Based on a true story
They were a 2 hit wonder. Check out their song "Out of My Head"
I forever associate this song with Vegas, because it was always on heavy rotation in casino lobbies for years (maybe it still is).
One of my favorite songs . Tragic backstory that it's based on. But the band made something memorable out of it.
I liked this song from the first time I heard it.
This was such a good song, I only found out years later this was actually base on a true story.
This album is fire 🔥
Fire escape
Thats a beautiful song, right there
Not one hit wonder, they had a few songs on the charts and on the radio
One of the great one-hit wonders from the ‘90s.
Long time since I heard this song. But all the cuts in the music video, I can't handle now.
The Cowsills Hair 1969 IN COLOR !!
Definitely part of the late 90s soundtrack!
Great reaction!
This was a GREAT song to hear on the radio back then!
I've always loved this song.
Out of My Head was another good radio song by them.
Always in my playlist. Always. Been on that highway since I was ten. Walk away.
It’s just alt-rock, in the same vein as Weezer. All the alternative radio stations played this, but not the pop or hard rock stations.
I’m not sure if you guys realize just how massive of a hit this was, one of the biggest songs of the 90s.
I believe this song is about purgatory and the afterlife, the chorus really hints to it. They actually left in the middle of the night but died in a car accident.
Anyone can see the road that they walk on is paved in gold
And it's always summer
They'll never get cold
They'll never get hungry
They'll never get old and gray
You can see their shadows wandering off somewhere
They won't make it home
But they really don't care
They wanted the highway
They're happier there today, today
the chorus completely describes heaven; road paved in gold, always summer, never aging, never needing, no want to leave...that's heaven.
i think they were going for melancholy due to the nature of the theme. 2 older folks went missing and they're assuming they are in Heaven "never get old or gray"
check out the story behind the song. You can find it on RUclips.
Great reaction ❤
Trust me, Lex...Every decade has a ton of One Hit Wonders. Music has become more mechanized since the 1990's, so there are fewer now, but before the 1990's ever decade had a TON of One Hit Wonders. The 1960's through the 1990's produced a ton...you've probably reacted to a bunch of them.
Always loved this song!
Smashmouth- walking on the sun
Nice :)
"Mafia vibes". Uh, what? The '70's had a shitload of one hit wonders.
This has a Beatles nerd pop meets Stones rockin sensibility
Super track the album is great trad rockn roll
i remember this like it was yesterdoo
I'm a child of the 60's, but man did the 90's kill it or what?
The song FOOLS GAME/1983 Album Michael Bolton/Michael Bolton - Give a listen If you both want Brad & Lex
Love this, it's hauntingly great!
I record music with the singer, Tony Scalzo occasionally. Super nice guy!
Until the chorus, this sounds just like "Delilah"
