    What are your baby's favorite iron-rich foods? Mine LOOOOVES broccoli, kale, and chia puddings, especially if they're topped with fruit and ground coconut flakes.

    Love the "eat it with protein" tip! Feels like a broccoli, bok choy, and tofu stir-fry would be a delicious iron-rich meal! I also made a "What Vegan Kids Eat Iron Rich Foods" vid! My four boys love potato lentil soup with greens!

      Hi Marie. That potato lentil soup sounds absolutely delicious! And your kiddos are adorable :) Four boys and you manage to remain so calm! You go mama -- I'm ultra impressed!

    These meals look so yummy and beautiful! I didn't really like cooking when my daughter was a baby so she ate very simple dishes, no wonder she now prefers to have her food in the simplest form possible: sliced bell pepper, a whole carrot (God forbid shredded), plain oatmeal... :) Hoping to do a better job with my second :)

      I totally get it. Between cooking meals, eating them with my little ones and cleaning up afterwards -- it can feel like most of my day has come and gone! That's why I like improv cooking so much. Most of the time, it helps me get something interesting on the table in 10-20 minutes max. How old is your little one? Tastes change with time, and the more often kids are exposed to foods, the likelier they are to eventually try them / love them :)

      @@veggiesandmore she's four :) i try not to fall into the trap of not offering. In any case, I am pretty happy with the way she eats, she's not that fussy and she eats enough, with good variety, including veggies and fruits. Just very simple :)

      @@anuke123That sounds pretty great to me! Four years old already! Mine just turned one, but I have the feeling that I'll blink and next thing I know, she'll also be four!! haha

    I love this! I'm raising my kids vegan, and from time to time I get suuuuper anxious that I'm ruining them for life, by not making sure that they get everything they need... Everyone around me is constantly asking me if I know about this or that nutrient, and every time, I get in to full research mode and can't sleep for days until I'm sure I do everything I can to make sure they get every single essential thing.. My biggest concern right now is my eight month old. How do I make sure he's getting everything..? He eats a lot of peas, lentils, beans, broccoli, oatmeal, fortified oat/soy yoghurts and stuff, and he's gaining weight like crazy, but I still feel anxious and like I'm missing out on something super important.. I'm less concerned with my 4 year old, since he can pretty much just eat supplements if he's in a bad food-place, and still get every essential thing....

      Hi Jenny! Glad you liked the video :) I definitely relate to your comment, especially going into full-fledged research mode which I do quite my share of as well! At eight months old, most of his nutrition should come from breastmilk or formula, so I hope that knowing this will provide you at least some mental relief. The goal for now should be to introduce him to as many foods as possible since this will help increase his acceptance of a variety of foods later on. The main nutrients to keep in mind for now are iron, vitamin-C and fat-rich/energy-rich foods and I suggest you try incorporating one food from each category to each meal and snack. If you haven't already, you can download a free printable sheet of foods listed by category at: morethanjustveggies.com/best-first-foods-for-vegan-babies. You might also want to consider a few supplements which I'm hoping to address in a video shortly. Hope this helps?

      @@veggiesandmore Yes, I know most his nutrition should come from breastmilk or formula, but as with my oldest son, he refuses formula and only wants to nurse like one time a day... My oldest stopped nursing at 7 months old, but we weren't vegan back then so I never really thought twice of it, he grew as he should and was perfectly healthy. My baby now is also growing as he should, but I can't help to be really friggin' nervous all the time anyway.. Any tips on what to do when he refuses formula and only gets breastmilk that one time..?

      @@jennyrintakoski4914 When babies don't fall off their growth curve despite drinking breastmilk only once a day, it usually means that they're getting enough calories. This could be either by eating a lot of solids or drinking quite a bit of milk during that one session per day. In both cases, the strategy remains the same -- offer a variety of nutrient-dense foods at each meal and snack, with a special focus on iron- vitamin-C and energy/fat-rich foods -- it's just the quantity that will differ. You also have the option of tracking what your little one eats over a few days to see how close he's getting (on average) to the recommended nutrient intakes for his age-group, using an online food journal like cronometer. Hope this helps :)

      @@veggiesandmore I will try Cronometer! I use it for myself, already, but it never occured to me that I can track his foods as well! Thank you for your tips!

    What are your thoughts on baby iron supplement? My daughter is 7mo old and was born low weight (2.5kg), and I've been adding her food into chronometer, and she doesn't get much of iron at all, mainly because of the sizes of her meals. I cook her purees at home, but would you recommend baby fortified store bought cereals?

    • @veggiesandmore
      @veggiesandmore  4 года назад +2

      Iron fortified baby cereal can be one option. Regarding supplements, and given the info you've shared, I think it might be worth speaking to your pediatrician about getting your daughter's blood iron levels checked (ask for both hemoglobin and ferritin). Giving your baby iron supplements when not needed may do more harm than good. Getting her blood levels checked will help your doctor give you tailored advice regarding whether supplements may be a good idea, and if so, how much to give your little one on a daily basis until she can meet her needs through diet alone. Hope this helps?
