The biological purpose of sex is to reproduce and pass on our genes. However, I think that more people engage in sexual activities for the fun and pleasure that it brings. We are hard-wired to seek pleasure and avoid pain. Sexual activities are not only pleasureful, but one of our core human needs. Sometimes sex is used to express love and other times sex is given in exchange for love. Everyone masturbates, which is a sexual activity. However, no one has reproduced or gotten pregnant from masturbating. Even though this is a sexual activity it's purpose is not to reproduce, but to experience pleasure and understand ourselves sexually. Homosexual people have sex not to reproduce, but because they want to have fun, experience pleasure, or express their love in relationship. There are many purposes to sex not just one.
One purpose is to reproduce and pass on our genes. Another purpose is to experience pleasure and have fun. Another purpose is to express our love and have intimacy in a relationship. However, as human beings age their reproductive capacities diminish. Teenagers have sex mostly to be social and have fun (much like drinking). I think in between adolescence and old age is when people have sex to reproduce and express love and intimacy in relationships. However, just as human beings' capacities to reproduce diminishes with age, so too do their numbers of sexual relationships. I think the peak of sexual activity occurs in early to late adolescence when there is a sudden increase in sex hormone levels. I think it is easier to have sex for pleasure throughout life than it is to reproduce throughout life or develop numerous relationships throughout life.

The purpose of sex is reproduction. Organisms without any conscious thoughts whatsoever have sex, and they do it exclusively for the sake of reproduction. It is totally contradictory to say that your conscious thoughts give something its meaning, especially considering that since time immemorial, the conscious thoughts of man have been applied toward aberration from nature, to the extent that everyone now considers it totally normal and natural. In order to attempt to justify this, they totally contradict themselves by both claiming that man is part of nature, but on the other hand, has some sort of designated authoritative role above nature from which he can declare purposes of natural functions. Sex exists for the sake of reproduction, period.

The main purpose of sex is reproduction. That is the only reason it exists but other people use it to show love and intimacy and that's great. It builds trust and strengthens your relationship with your partner. Some people use it incorrectly in a negative way but as long as you don't, it's okay.

The main purpose is reproduction, it only brings you pleasure to ensure that you will continue to reproduce. If it didn't stimulate your brain and give you a pleasure sensation people would want to reproduce as much.
